And The Budget Will Balance Itself

Now is the time at SDA when we juxtapose!

CBC FACTCHECK, October 2019: The Conservatives’ misleading claims about a ‘secret’ Liberal housing tax

Blacklocks, July 2020; CMHC is spending $250,000 researching a first-ever federal home equity tax. Organizers of the research project earlier likened homeowners to lottery winners whose residences were tax shelters: “The objective is to identify solutions that could level the playing field between renters and owners.”

    1. Impoverish? You mean STEAL. You work hard, pay off your mortgage and pay extra to keep up on your home in repairs and improvements and now the government is going to penalize you because obviously you need to be punished for your hard work and success.

      1. More than 40 years of never missing a mortgage payment, home insurance payment, and property tax payments (forgot about THOSE tax payments, eh? Marxists ?) … and you’re calling me a lottery winner? No, comrade … it’s called: “discipline”, “investment”, “intelligence” …”deferred gratification”

Oh yeah … those are all traits of my “whiteness” … right, Smithsonian Institution? Now you want to tax my “whiteness”, eh leftists?

        1. Kenji, Perleeze, don’t give em even more ideas, do we really want to mention taxing whitey, for being whitey, a white tax for reparations nooooo.

    2. impoverish everyone

Correction: impoverish every prole. You don’t think the upper crust is going to be adversely affected by this, do you?

  1. “Tax and spend” Liberals.

“WE” already know the spend part and now here comes the tax part.

  2. Stupid Canadians, deserve everything they get, or don’t get as the case may be. Unfortunately they screw me over as well and don’t want them and didn’t vote for them. Voting has been grossly overrated. The longer the flu crap goes on the closer I get to thinking like the anarchists.

  3. How can you tell if a liberal is lying? Their lips are moving, they are feigning compassion while taking your wallet. Feel free to add your own.

  4. I cannot muster even a scintilla of wry humour to describe the outright criminality and manipulation of the electorate by this Liberal government.
Owning and renting are choices people make, through disciplined saving, or not. “Leveling the playing field”, removes the choice and any subsequent rewards, immediate or future. Home ownership as currently devised builds habits of frugality, financial discipline and husbandry of resources. This move toward outright communism is beyond disturbing. Without an offset, this scheme will become a crippling dis-incentive, reducing people to lives of misery and despair, stealing their future and a major benefit in retirement. Ask anyone who has lived or worked in a Communist country. The entire concept is an abomination.

    1. Agreed Rob, I don’t even understand why a “level playing field” is needed from my perspective. If we dig a little deeper though, the thoughts that come to mind is that most older conservatives are more frugal, disciplined financially, and homeowners, whereas most Liberals are younger and renters, and have less financial discipline. That is the Liberal base they want to level the “Playing field” for. Instead of attempting to elevate more Canadians to be better off financially, they want to bring the level down.
Why? I would bet that means many are then more dependent on the government, which is just the way they like it, because they have more power and control. Again, it’s to remove the idea of being self sufficient, independent, thinking, individual. Same as the gun banning issue, but more deceptive. Plus being better off financially also means you are less dependent on the feds, and they don’t like that.
Yes, commie light, it’s the basic dictator thing as well, and by “creative taxation”, the budget will balance itself, because having the government assume the Covid debt, so Canadians don’t have to, is the Liberal way! Sunny ways peoplekind!

      1. Gerry, I think you’ve hit on a larger issue. So many things Trudeau is doing recently focuses on the younger age group. I don’t think this is a coincidence. There must be internal polling inside the Liberal party telling them they are losing the older ages groups (no matter if traditionally liberal or conservative) as those age groups can see the repercussions of all the debt spending. The younger groups can’t yet and they love “free” money or money for nothing. As such, the liberals are going all out on focussing on this younger age group to nail down their vote.

    2. The level playing field that he could be talking about is the fact that renters pay more property tax than owners. The owner of a rental apartment building pays property tax at the commercial rate, and a home owner pays property tax at the residential rate, which is lower. Given that the cost is passed onto the tenant, renters pay a higher rate of property tax.

That being said, property tax is municipal, not federal.

      1. yes, the feds cannot get their sticky fingers on it. They want to bring in a wealth tax, especially on non-Liberals and this is a way to do that

        1. BC tried this back in the early 90’s. Total flop. Didn’t go over well with .GOV home owners, never mind the regular Joes. Ottawa is owned by Sibble Serpents. They own real estate. A lot of real estate, same any where else in the country.
          DOA.

        1. To transfer title on my house in B. C., I needed to hire a lawyer. That was one thing the provincial government didn’t allow me to do by myself.

        2. Not sure about other Provinces or US states, but here in BC, you even get to pay a tax on a used vehicle purchase. Every time a vehicle is purchased from a dealer or a private sale, we are taxed on that purchase. Then, when we fill up with gas, we get to pay taxes on taxes to buy the damn stuff. Then of course for the sin of being alive, in Canada we get to pay rising “Carbon Taxes” as well. Creative taxation is the Liberal way. Plus add in the provincial sales tax, the GST, house taxes on purchase, municipal taxes, Environmental taxes on tires, batteries, oil, sales taxes, license taxes, ad infinitum! I would bet that if we could add up all the taxes we pay, it would be well over sixty percent of our incomes per annum, and they now want to level the playing field? It ain’t ever been level in my lifetime!

    3. To a conservative, a level playing field means equality of opportunity. We all start at the same starting line.
To socialist, a level playing field means equality of outcome. We all finish the same, regardless of how hard we worked, saved, delayed gratification, and so on.
      Or not.
If that means the productive must be punished and the less productive rewarded, so be it. In the name of “Equality.”
It comes from a totally inaccurate view of human nature. “Of course, everyone will work their hardest. Of course, no Canadian will take advantage of government largess. You are such an evil person for suggesting that.”
“Equality” and “Inequality” are now terms that are problematic to use, as to us they mean Thing A, while to the enemy, they mean Thing B.
      Yes, I said “Enemy”.

  5. Theft will only continue to grow.
The Kleptocracy has run out of marks.
Anything that can be stolen easily has been.
So now the game gets interesting.
Each new theft compounds the rage caused by the old thefts and the subsequent pissing away of that stolen wealth..
We will soon be paying more tax to pay the interest on the debt taken out in our name, than we owe in total.
Government by thieves to the benefit of those thieves, means stealing is not illegal.
But the result is always the same.
Poverty Chaos and finally bloody revenge.
Oh well,I look forward to the latter.

  6. And the tax will be on every farm and business. Even two percent on a million dollar farm, with inflation thats the minimum, is $20,000. and will kill Western Canadian agriculture. What are those dairies and maple syrup farms worth ? They may be exempt for awhile but not near enough will be collected. I will recommend that farmers destroy all their buildings and equipment Let the governments grow the food. Starvation for $500. Alex?

  7. I already get taxed on the current market value of my home.
    It’s called Municipal taxes.

    1. For our municipal taxes we at least receive some services…infrastructure and repairs, police and fire, garbage collection. What tangible positive results do we realize from this federal government?

      1. and yet, the municipal taxes are also wasted on vanity projects for most of the councils that run the cities.

        1. Hey Ottawa City is doing its bit to fight climate change; Ièm so proud and it only costs $250,000 per year,

      2. The Federal Government exists to steal our money. Use national defence as an example. Can our armed forces defend the country? Nope. So WTF good are they? And that’s not a dig at the soldiers, sailors or even the chair force, just the facts.

      3. I live on a acreage in Wellington Township. I have private well, and septic systems. I get recyclable collections every two weeks. The road out front is owned by a different township (in which I also have land and pay taxes). My grandson goes to school in the other township so I getting school services (with COVID, not so much). My family doctor retired so I don’t have a family physician.

So other than the road, recyclable collections, and maybe school services, tell me why I need government, especially government that can’t recognize the difference between needs and wants, and has the goal of fulfilling everyone’s wants without limitations?

        1. You dont need a goverment but the government needs you, or rather your money and labor

      4. Rob, your garbage collection is included in your municipal taxes?? How good is that!?! You obviously don’t live in Calgary! Hell, we even get taxed on storm water runoff!

        1. I water my yard and garden, when it needs it. Calgary taxes you on storm water runoff. None of what I water runs off.

          1. It’s taxed whether it runs off or not as the bill has three water-related items: water treatment and supply; wastewater collection and treatment; stormwater management. Our lot is in a neighbourhood where the city boulevard is right next to our lot with the sidewalk right beside the road (some areas it’s different with the sidewalk on city property between lot and boulevard and then the road – in those places, the adjacent homeowner is expected to keep the boulevard mowed though not necessarily watered), and there are two large elms on the city bit. This year watering is not an issue but have been tempted in dryer summers to stop watering at our lot line and let the city trees take their chances. City very proud of its urban forest but penalizes the homeowners who look after same.

    2. There may be a constitutional violation then.

Someone up in Ottawa should make a statement on record to that effect.

      But they won’t.

  8. So, we have two corrupt, sub-moronic, buffoons that hold the two highest offices in the land. These two have NEVER made a mortgage payment. Everything they have has been handed to them. Yet they will decide that people that work, scrimp, save and sacrifice to build equity in a home shall now be punished.

Tell me; when will family trusts be taxed?

Oh, also, the rule of thumb for deducting expenses is any interest payment that is paid to earn income is tax deductible (i.e. like buying a stock on margin) So, I guess all my mortgage interest is now tax deductible right?

  9. The Russian and Ukrainian kulaks immigrated to Canada in the early 1900’s. Should we all go back now ?

  10. A wealth tax in effect and you don’t even have to be wealthy for the vultures to swoop in. Just being frugal and industrious is now a sin.

  11. And believe it or not the best is yet to come. Once they tax your owner/occupied residence and confiscate your guns, they will come for your bank accounts…. Oh! wait a minute that program is already underway! So buckle up Kiddies! We’re in for one h3ll of a ride. Total and absolute wealth tax on everything that you own in life and then total confiscation of your estate when you die. The best part is that your inheritors that were banking on their inheritance are finally going to see the light but it will be too damned late for them to do anything about it because they are already brainwashed by the state into believing the state will take care of them. Well the state will take care of them good and hard. Sorry that I wont be around to see the sack cloth and ashes and the wailing and gnashing of teeth. It’s going to be wonderful!!!!!

  12. At this point I would say the conservatives could run a two legged milking stool and win against these morons but I would be wrong.

The embedded love for these clowns in the cities back East is still at peak levels. “He’s so handsome and sends us money”… other people’s money.

Before this tax comes into effect I’m going to have to sell my house into a corp and rent it back to myself. Maybe I’ll make it arms length and get a couple of friends together and we’ll become each other’s slum lord.

  13. We need to get rid of the eastern mouthbreathers. There’s no other solution. It’s time to get the hell out of this forsaken country.

  14. Hey, stop bitching you stupid Canucks. What makes you think you have any more right to the value in your homes than you do to the value in the firearms you legally purchased while complying with every law and regulation? Shut up and bow, you idiot prole, and be grateful for the benevolence shown you by your progressive masters.

    1. This is only the beginning of the Left’s creative new discovery of “revenue enhancements.”
Seriously, people: we have a $350 BILLION deficit. And the shit has still yet to hit the fan, fiscally.
GST increase? Personal and corporate tax increases? Taxes on personal wealth, right down to people with almost nothing?
How else are they going to do it? China is asking.

    2. Mr Shale, It’s only part of party policy, There is also, “Creative taxation”. There is also the lotteries grabbing money, what I call, “stupidity taxes”, wealth taxes, income taxes, outcome taxes, purchase taxes, death taxes and so on, I’m surprised we don’t yet have a birth tax as well, we probably do.
What is referred to as hidden taxation. All the while, Justin is frittering it away as fast as he can. How come we couldn’t afford to improve the lot of our vets, but we can blow billions on this stupidity.
Thank heavens the Liberals took on this debt so Canadians wouldn’t have to! What a moronic idiot.
The next crisis, will need to be shelved, as we can’t even afford this one! At least not until the budget balances itself in April 2125!

  15. Well in my municipality (and I live inside the city limits) my municipal taxes do not pay for fire protection or garbage pickup. And I have a well and a septic field, as there is no sewer or water in this end of town.

    1. I live in a city, and my taxes don’t pay for water and sewer either. They are a separate bill.

        1. Buddy, in Ottawa one should be able to dump their shit in the street, and it wouldn’t be noticed, because politicians:-)))

  16. According to the Chicom Lieberals: if you save and put money into your own house you “won the lottery”. Talk about your typical greedy socialist scum. If you rent you can move practically at a moment’s notice and go to where there are better pastures. Home owners cannot do that as they need to sell their house; sometimes at a loss.
This is pure Lieberal socialism at work.

    1. I just sent my comments and opposition to CMHC. I would encourage everyone else to the same.

        1. No, but you feel better telling them what you think of them.
I also ragged on my MP.

    2. MikeT, well, I’m gobsmacked, who would ever of thought that a “Liberal” government would do such a mean thing to it’s citizenry!

    1. The field is very level.
Equality of outcome is war against hard work and intelligence, industriousness and risk taking.
These filthy communists are a threat to even minor financial success and stability let alone moderate wealth and security.
Anyone in favour of this or a Guaranteed Income is a fucking thief and a POS.

  17. They will just make mortgage interest deductible. No thanks. Its fine as is.

The roof over your head is a liability, not an investment.

    1. Making mortgage interest tax deductable sounds good until the honest, hard-working senior citizen pays off the mortgage before retirement, then the tax man cometh anyway.

      1. Making mortgage interest tax deductible means that people will always keep refinancing their houses and taking out the equity, so as to maximize their tax deduction. Previously in Canada, if mortgage rates came down, it made sense to refinance your mortgage at the lower rate, while keeping your payments the same, thus knocking a few years off your amortization. Thus, for your average Canadian, prepaying the mortgage was about the best risk-free investment available. Meanwhile in the US, whenever rates dropped, everyone refinanced their mortgages, taking out any equity, making the mortgage principal bigger, so as to maintain (or increase) the tax benefit. Mortgage interest deductability is a stupid idea with perverse economic incentives. One of the main reasons (along with more lender-friendly mortgage rules) that Canada did not share the US sub-prime debacle was that we don’t have interest deductability.

  18. My conspiracy theory that everything occurring presently is a plot to misappropriate the entire real estate of the planet is becoming more and more founded.

    1. How about the elephant in the room tv commercial: the Canadian “Chip” home income plan, promoted by thieves to buy your parents home for a fraction of what it is worth… Whose pocket is the real estate value going to after they can’t make the payments?

  19. Why don’t we level the playing field and put a tax on being a cabinet member, or policy maker, or media workers? All these people with so much power.

    1. Better than a tax on Liberal politicians, how about we separate and BANISH all Liberal Style Creatures.
Run them off once, then post a bounty if they return.

      1. I wouldn’t post a bounty on return, I would simply post a bounty, period! As the bodies would be heavy and smelly, I would just have the ears cut off and handed in to receive payment. The bounty would be small, say, ten buck per, so we would need to hunt a bunch to make it worthwhile.

Of course we would be taxed on the hunting permit…sigh!

  20. I suggest we also look at taxing trust funds. Also there are many benefits and other entitlements in the public sector, such as free transportation, free housing, etc. that should be looked at as taxable benefits.

    1. I wonder why they are called “Trust Funds”, I don’t trust any of them to leave my funds alone.

  21. The graft, corruption and free stuff has to be paid for somehow. Elections have consequences. Who knew?

  22. What is it about this ‘level playing field’ that you all don’t get! A level playing field only works if you are both playing the same game with the same rules and with an unbiased umpire or referee. Since when has any government played by the same rules that it imposes on us. It is like one team playing cricket and the other is playing baseball and the referees are from football and soccer leagues. We elect these dimwitted morons to work for us and then they come in and dictate what in their opinion, is best for us. How about a system that dictates to elected officials that the promises made in a campaign must be met within the first twelve months or your ass is grass. When have we had a government that actually fulfilled their election promises. They all get in on your wish and a prayer, and then fill their own pockets with your money and impose their ideals. That is a fair game played on a level playing field? Time to change the great Canadian quote, “Sorry, eh!” to “Sorry, Duh!”

  23. Climate change disaster is always in the future. Money grubbing political spendthrifts increasing taxes is never in the future.

Unless they’re conservatives, then it’s a hidden agenda. There’s nothing hidden about this government completely losing control of spending, phoning businesses to tell them to take out $40,000 loans, even if they don’t need them, because if they repay it within a year, they get to keep $10,000. That’s “free money” they tell us.

Now we learn WE got away with their nepotistic corruption because the incoming Liberal government turned off audits of political charities, which would have caught trough feeding Grit family members cashing in.

That, along with destroying native and union accountability by reversing the previous government’s attempts to ensure taxpayer dollars are spent wisely.

If you have a rental suite, Greedy Grits have painted a target on your house. If you have employment expenses, watch out.

  24. “The objective is to identify solutions that could level the playing field between grasshoppers and ants.”

    FTFY

  25. “The objective is to identify solutions that could level the playing field between renters and owners”

    Pure BS.

The objective is to raise money in a way palatable to Liberal voters and payable by the rest.

      1. GST back up to 8%
        No more pension income splitting
        Fees on breathing
        Sex tax
        Provincial home sale tax
        Diversity tax
        CBC tax

    1. They don’t need to tax lottery winnings: they already take about 60% right off the top. They sell, say, 10 million tickets at $3 each (Lotto 649) and top prize will be ten million. Oddly enough, the old “numbers” racket the Mafia used to run, which is exactly the same as any Pick-3 lottery game, used to pay out a much higher percentage to winners than does the Govt (60% vs 30%). Reminds me of the old classic (1953) Sci-Fi novel by Cyril Kornbluth, “The Syndic”, where government is so corrupt that people live better in areas run by organized crime. Meanwhile, in the real world, it’s getting harder every day to tell the difference between Government and Organized Crime.

    2. Yeah, but you gotta win em first, only one in what, 14 million, wins, so it should be called a stupidity tax!

  26. Like one of the famous historic figures once asked:

Who will rid me of Marwan’s daughter?

  27. The Main Stream Media CBC is lying ONCE Again. Trudeau is planning on going after the profit you make on selling your home as CAPITAL GAINS this is your pension NOT the governments. If Trudeau tries this we should start asking the government for the money to do repairs or updates….since they want to think my house is theirs do they pay the property taxes NO. Let’s start TAXing TRUST FUNDS and NON PROFIT FOUNDATIONS!! The Liebral government is going after the little man and NOT the RICH. The Laurentian Elites TRUDEAU and MORNEAU and more!! Trudeau is spending millions of TAXPAYERS money on the place he and his family are living in at Harrington Lake. He never spends his own money only the TAXPAYERS money. The Cancel Culture people will be paying for this for years to come.

  28. If they are in search of new taxes to levy it’s because they are running out of other people’s money and the creditors have already given notice that if the GDP keeps going down they won’t be extending anymore credit.
    Now the big squeeze happens.
Eventually even if they tax us more it won’t be enough to avoid the country being put in receivership.
    Then it ends.

    1. I fear this is only the beginning of the Left’s creative new discovery of “revenue enhancements.”

Seriously, people: WE HAVE A $350 BILLION DEFICIT.

And we still haven’t seen the fiscal domino effect happen yet:

Provinces have been asking for ”relief” from the federal government. Municipalities asking for the same from their provinces. And, taxpayers asking for relief from……(Wait a minute! They seem to be at the end of the line here.)

And this shit has yet to hit the fan, fiscally. Sure, there’s the much hoped for “pent up demand” that will see government revenues streaming in. But what if it doesn’t?

A GST increase? Personal and corporate tax increases? Taxes on personal wealth, right down to people (like myself) with almost nothing?

How else are they going to do it?

      Chinese debt holders are asking.

  29. The US has proven that the Keynesian / QE disaster can go on a long time if you have the privilege of printing the world’s reserve currency.
US debt deficits to the sky, maybe $32 trillion today, means the question is when will IMF SDRs replace the $US as the international trade “currency”, not if.
    Canada has no such privileges.

As Hemingway said …You go bankrupt slowly at first, then all at once.

  30. i appreciate the comments from all.. perhaps. like me. you have been sharing this story ,as i have , for over 30 years….it has cost me dearly in finance and personal suffering, which i do not regret, as i know i spoke the truth….keep up truth telling mates, as we head into the final round of this charade..cheers

  31. Rigged low “interest rates”, big capital gains. A self fulfilling prophesy. The only folks paying this “tax” will be people who already own their homes, or have built up some skin in the game. A lot of gubmint workers comes to mind. Not going to go over well.
My first ownership was in Saskatoon and the interest rates were 12.75% to 20.5% and on a salary a lot less than equivalent wages today. Sold it 10 years later for the same price I bought it. And whose valuation are they using, city tax rolls? They are rigged numbers. How about I deduct every repair, up grades, interest expense (not cheap, I paid not less than 6% on this one), new roof, plumbing whatever? If no deductions I’ll burn it to the ground. Three squares and a roof over my head. There are a couple of other options, too.

  32. That responsible homeowners were characterised as “lottery winners” shows the level of contempt the government has for people who worked hard.

But, then again, Canadians voted to be treated like sh–, so …

    1. At the same time the government is attempting to aid home ownership for first timers. Left hand – meet right hand.

  33. It is still hard to believe that I am living in a country where the Prime Minister can enunciate such inanities.

    1. Don’t forget that he also said that small business owners were tax cheats.

  34. Just a natural continuation of progressive taxation. It’s funny how most conservatives seem to have grown accustomed to a progressive income tax. Well, why not a progressive tax on housing? And soon a progressive tax on wealth in general will follow.

This is a trial ballon to start getting people used to the idea. It’s coming.

The government has no business knowing where we make our money (as long as it’s legal), and it has no business knowing how much we make. But, people are used to these paradigms and so they accept them. We complain about new taxes, but they get implemented and we accept them.

Here we are giving govt half our labour for them to divy up amongst their friends and supporters. Soon to be 60% and more.

Enjoy the shackles. Keep voting canadian commies.

  35. liberals do not understand human nature … they violate it and then wonder why everything turns to shit.

I will never comply with a tax on my hard earned home which is my only security in life … Having been self employed and self reliant, I have no pension so I need what I have earned and saved to support myself … and not to support a class of loser in society who simply will not discipline themselves to prosper on their own.

My home is my fortune my castle, my security. With that … you do not fuck.

  36. The 1867 Confederation Act does not allow the Federal government to tax people’s property.
That said, the joke’s on them if they try. Thanks to Zoolander’s NEP II my home has lost value below what I paid for it.

  37. They found a way to tax “lottery” wins.

People who can’t control their behavior ultimately must control our behavior.

Governments that won’t control their spending ultimately must control our spending.

Statist transactions of decline will always lead to collectivism if unchecked by voters.

Hayek: “planning for competition can be combined only by planning for competition but not by planning against competition.”
