Dementia seems to have different speeds of onset. Some people remain capable of basic living for years as they slowly decline and others slip into confusion quite quickly. My mother went very quickly from being a competent lady to a person needing safe confined living quarters in less than a year. My mother in law was much slower. We could tell she was slipping but she was able to remain competent for about 5 years. From that experience I would say that Joe has a more rapid onset. You can see the decline in a much shorter period of time. He has gone from a gaffe prone goof to a mumbling person to be pitied in less than a year. I would suspect if he took a cognition test he would be found mentally incompetent to look after his own affairs. I assume Jill has enduring power of attorney and is taking care of him. Dementia is a tragic stage of life for many people. I hate to see anyone go through it but if it has to happen having it happen to the erstwhile nominee for the democrats oh well. Jill should take Joe out of the race and let him enjoy what little time he has left.
