In Canada, it started with the Human Rights Commission and the trials of Ernst Zundel. Understand, I am not a supporter or fan of Ernst Zundel. His publications were evil. But when we allowed the HRC to intervene in free speech, it was the beginning of the end. Zundel was a nut, and he still had the right to air his views if we truly believe in free speech. Either we believe in free speech for all, or we don’t.
As has been said, supporting free speech of those who agree with you is meaningless unless you support the speech of those who disagree with you. Vile racists should be free to say whatever they want as long as it doesn’t involve calls for violence. The problem with restricting speech is that conservatives, when in power, don’t use it to restrict liberal speech. If they did, nobody would play the fascists game.

Godwin’s Law was an observation about the progression of online debate from civil disagreement into calling your opponent a Nazi as a so-called “winning move”. I’m pretty sure he never intended it to be used against valid comparisons…that’s just an inevitable result of the leftification of society, both online and IRL. I hate to say it, but a complacent (and “safe”?) society always seems to end up this way, because people aren’t spending enough time having to earn their livings. A UBI would just make this worse.
In a lot of ways, I think we should just go back to some of the old ways of doing things. Art should rarely be publicly funded, for example, except in certain commemorative circumstances: artists should be forced to earn incomes and find patrons. If you can’t find an audience for your work, maybe there isn’t one. But I don’t care what you write, people shouldn’t be allowed to just destroy it willy-nilly. The worst novel I ever read, I borrowed from the library. I couldn’t finish it, and that’s one of only two times I couldn’t. I admittedly defaced the book inside (with pencil) with the inscription that subsequent people shouldn’t waste their time on it, but I would never countenance burning it. If I had purchased it, I probably would have just given it away, rather than throwing it out.
The views of some people, content producers, directors, writers are utterly reprehensible. Utterly. But you can’t defend against them through suppression, because something always gets through, and if something is “forbidden”, it will always find a way. Destroy the ideas in public forums, don’t destroy the medium containing them or the speakers presenting them. If the ideas are cut apart, the rest follows naturally for a period of time, until the next rabble-rouser brings them forward again. The history of ideas needs to be maintained, though, to reduce the number of such resurgences. And in this way, hopefully we can say “doing socialism harder doesn’t work” fewer times, instead of howling into the darkness, as we so often do.
