If you’ve followed the news in recent weeks, you’ll have noticed that the Left’s social-justice brigades have not cooled in their passion for banishing speech with which they disagree. But these days have also revealed a more dangerous tactic: conscripting speech by means of social pressure. Instead of enforcing strict silence, progressives aim to craft a public square in which we are all obliged to echo their views.
It is abundantly clear that social-justice activists — and, increasingly, mainstream left-wing Americans — do not intend to relent in wielding the cultural power of rage mobs to erase all trace of contrary opinions.
In the old days, people could freely debate. But given that the Left argues from the perspective of feelings, not facts, they lost all arguments. So they switched to the tactic of “what you’re saying is hateful, thus you don’t have a right to speak”. But now, in 2020, even that isn’t enough. You now MUST publicly agree with them or fear being canceled and destroyed. Have you noticed how many politicians, senior police officials, and companies have fallen into line so quickly?

In the mid-1980s a young white male, a “friend”, of mine was in the consulting to government industry. He’d never worked in government and had only had relatively positive interactions with them — he believed them to be a force for good and thought that any bad decision were simply decisions of bad actors.
A farm boy who’d gotten a STEM degree paid for by his summers of hard labour he laid out a plan to become an international development worker — he wanted to travel and thought he could do it through his work. He got a Master’s degree, volunteered overseas and learned a second language and started a third language. He was able to get a job on the periphery of the International Development industry — consulting to government at the national and international levels (World Bank, UN agencies, etc.). When inquired or applied for a plumb overseas position he found out that “special target” folks got those jobs. Women and gays got them. He was told a few times, although this was not openly admitted back then, that he shouldn’t waste time applying as they were looking for a woman.
So he worked for private consulting outfits and achieved his goal of living and working overseas that way. Returning to Canada to raise a family in the early 1990s he landed a job in the Federal Government where white males were rarely being promoted. Then the goals were explicit within the Feds: preference was given to women, gays, disabled, aboriginals (as we called them back then) and coloured folk. These special targets were so “important” that executives got their bonuses largely based on how many of these boxes they could check off. It was ludicrous so many bosses were totally incompetent and working for them was hell. He couldn’t stand it and went back to the private sector — no longer working for government and his view of government greatly diminished.
When you ask him about this University-type being hounded out of a job because her ardent feminist views don’t cross the line to accommodate gender fluidity he says “First they came for the white men!”.
You can only disparage people so long before they react. The present government had done more to create hate and racism than I thought was possible. They don’t understand the level of anger they have created. Yet they feat the alt right, but I didn’t expect them to make it the common sense alternative. For a long time I felt alone with my perspective on the path we are on. Now I meet many people that are mad as hell and they are arming. It isn’t something I bring up. It’s is simply a question of what the catalyst will be for seperation or possibly armed revolt. They have mistakenly taken tolerance and a desire to live peacefully in a rule based society for weakness.

What tends to happen is the hard right will eventually win absolute in a landslide, and then they suspend elections to “get the country back to law and order”, almost always with the enthusiastic approval of the productive and middle classes, and then they go to work, and deploy “robust” state actions to smash the left.

May I offer an economic solution to the mess that higher education has caused? Undergraduate degrees in STEM are to be free, but courses in ever more useless fields of study such as Gender Studies, Equity Studies etc., are to be completely defunded or defund the university’s faculty completely. Don’t feed the beast.
