Wuhan Flu

I don’t think most Americans fully understand the lengths that South Korea has undergone, so I’ll try my best to explain.

Boris Johnson’s three step plan to reopening.

The virus is natural, nothing here to see: US and British intelligence agencies are reportedly examining mobile phone data suggesting there could have been an emergency shutdown in October at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

  1. The Republic of Korea is on a permanent war footing against Red China and north Korea. Koreans understand to an extent few Canadians do that the Chinese want to be their masters, not their friends.

Whether or not Wuhan flu was genuinely a WMD is beside the point. What mattered was that South Korea was prepared for germ warfare.

We weren’t. By all the saints In heaven, were we not prepared.

The “NMSL” slogan projected on the Red Chinese consulate is Chinese internet slang. “Ni ma si le” are fighting words meaning “your mother is dead [and has gone to hell; kindly join her there]”

  2. I actually like a lot of the content on this site, most of it from the comments. I have for about 15 years.

Been here long enough as a commenter or lurker to see that something has changed dramatically, on this particular issue. Why? Very curious as to why?

Covid has been weaponized by the left. That is not a conspiracy theory. It’s what they are pinning their hopes upon to advance their agenda. Media is complicit. So are govt agencies and personel. This is not hard to see.

In US it means defeating trump at any and all costs.

In Canada it means Libs buying votes and raiding the treasury.

Europe was lost a long time ago as was Britain. We are following suit.

Aiding and abetting the goals of the left by supporting their narrative on covid, is no different than doing so on global warming or the Russia collusion fraud. And this blog has fought hard against the latter.

Why it’s digging in on the former simply makes no sense.

Beck went off the rails against Trump and dishonesty so. That didn’t turn out well for him. He will never fully get the trust back from his audience, try as he might.

Destroying the Western economy and imposing Soviet style restrictions on individual liberty and supply chains has caused more damage than covid would have had we not locked down.

  3. Nobody pays me to do this. Those who donate are among the minority (and for that I am grateful) but I could be better off financially if I took a few hours of the time I devote to this place each week and redirected it stocking shelves at Walmart.

    A LOT better off.

Thus — I don’t care if I lose “audience”. There’s nothing in it for me to hold audience — except for, apparently — sporadic insults and abuse.

I care that I maintain a modicum of intellectual integrity and objectivity. If not binding blindly to the right wing narrative de jour costs me audience, then put me on the team of Steve Bannon and Michael Yon, who also seem to have figured out how to hold more than one thought in their heads at the same time: a) the dangers of this virus are real and as yet unknowable, and b) the reactions and actions of governments in some jurisdictions have been dangerous and destructive, and c) that the more we learn about it, where the science is heading, the better.

And finally, I’m getting to the point that if one more person refers dismissively to nursing home residents and the “health compromised” as though they were disposable bags of flesh, absent of worth and value, instead of human beings who deserve protection and dignity, I may shut this fucking place down entirely. I’m pretty damned disgusted with some of the attitudes shown in these comments in recent weeks and days by those who purport to hold “conservative values”.

    1. Well said Kate. I don’t comment much but I’ve been reading since 2004 around the turn of the original Libranos and you’ve never been the type to be put in a box so I wanted to show my support for your continued blogging. Among all the noise the balanced voices like yours, Bannon, Ezra, Tucker, and the like are needed on the right, and intellectual honesty is what separates us from the left. The CCP did this, the virus is dangerous and unleashing it on the world was an act of war, and domestically we have to be watchful about the economic harm being done by leftist statist politicians justifying their unscientific actions based on models that would make Michael Mann proud. Smart public policy can defeat this virus without bringing on another Great Depression, and as a silver lining this should have the effect of waking up the western world to the dangers of being in bed with the ChiComs.

    2. Kate, I agree. Keep up the good work. Because of the valuable information you have put out on the Wuhan virus, my wife and I self-quarntined two months early, after stocking up on necessities. We also have done well in the stock market, going into cash, bonds and gold. Thank you for your good work with this site.

P.S: there has been a long debate, decades long, between “bad-assed” conservatism and other more positive brands of conservatism (e.g., Christian conservatism). I think you above post hits on this. Bad-assed conservatives brag about how mean they are, without adding or doing anything constructive to promote the cause. At my wife and my local Baptist church, we have bad-assed Christian’s who boast of how mean they are, all the while doing nothing constructive nor doing any ministry work. Bad-ass-ery exists everywhere, in many areas, and it does no one any good.

    3. “And finally, I’m getting to the point that if one more person refers dismissively to nursing home residents and the “health compromised” as though they were disposable bags of flesh, absent of worth and value, instead of human beings who deserve protection and dignity,”

Hear hear! They have no idea what they sound like. But don’t shut the place down, please.

    4. Kate, reference your last paragraph above, I also have noticed new contrarian, irresponsible and petty commenters with obviously diseased minds (you all know who you are), apparently coming unglued due to the effects of isolation. They visit here and comment with an aim to sow dissent and incite animosity; not sharing of useful enquiry and not respecting the polite rough and tumble of more mature contributors. Their personal attacks on you are repellent, and only showcase their perverse nature. Hard to ignore, but ignore we must.
      Press on, Dear Host.

    5. It is your blog and you have carte blanche to stop anyone from commenting or from even posting their comments (as you have email addresses for all of us). I come to this blog, not just for your input, but the input of others in their comments, including those with whom I may disagree – so that I may learn things I didn’t know before to alter my perspective, and to correct my thinking with a wider perspective and to see which way the wind is blowing with conservatives as a whole.

I would encourage you to keep up the good work as trying as it may be. Conservatives need a place to vent in a world where the pendulum has swung far to the left, and we are feeling largely ignored.

    6. I have not felt that people are dismissing the elderly and health compromised individuals as expendable– only that they are an identifiable group, such that isolation efforts can be focussed there. Health policy is about making choices. In this case, a decision has been made to shut down the economy. That too is not without consequences: https://www.justfacts.com/news_covid-19_anxiety_lockdowns_life_destroyed_saved
I appreciate this blog because of the obvious intelligence of the host and many of the posters. It provides an important second look at things we are seeing in the news. In the case of the virus, there are intelligent arguments on both sides of the issue. The dangerous and devastating virus needs to be contained, but at what cost to our lives and livelihoods? Everyone is struggling with this question and I do not expect everyone will be on the same page. I don’t believe that those questioning the wisdom of the lockdowns and other government actions are doing so out of callousness or ignorance. People just want to share their findings and experiences. I value that and thank Kate for all of her time and effort.

      1. “I don’t believe that those questioning the wisdom of the lockdowns and other government actions are doing so out of callousness or ignorance. People just want to share their findings and experiences.”
That’s true of some, definitely not all. When the virus situation started I was appalled at some of the dismissive comments about the elderly, and health-compromised. I’m in that latter group. I’m not one to personalize public comments, generally speaking, but I recall feeling like those posters were dismissing my life and whether people like me live(d) or die(d) was of no consequence. I said something about it at the time. I don’t recall my post being responded to.

    7. Miss Kate you captured my thoughts exactly. I call it the “Prudent Man Theory” …..THIS>who also seem to have figured out how to hold more than one thought in their heads at the same time: a) the dangers of this virus are real and as yet unknowable, and b) the reactions and actions of governments in some jurisdictions have been dangerous and destructive, and c) that the more we learn about it, where the science is heading, the better. …..I would add only this, the CHICOM Virus is probably in fact I am pretty sure it is a BIOWEAPON. (Prudent Man)….Some folks would argue that a pig’s ass isn’t pork…..

    8. Kate … the sanctity of life has no expiration date … either before birth (abortion) or before a natural death (Obamakkarecide). Forgive me if I have made callous comments (I may have) regarding Nursing Home deaths. If I did, it was for one reason only … that this virus is most virulent and deadly to the elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions. I have ONLY made these comments to point out our country should be focusing our protective efforts on the most vulnerable … NOT … shutting the whole place down.

I am on the cusp of those ages and infirmities that make me high risk for a CHICOM-19 death … so I have chosen to be extra careful and follow all the advice doled out by our stumbling and bumbling Federal bureaucrats. When the wife and I flew to LA in March … we did as the CDC advised and did NOT wear a mask on the flights to or from LA … nor did anyone else. Now, my County has mandated mask wearing whenever in public.

I both take this virus seriously … but also believe we’ve completely overreacted as a society .,. which begs the question? Is this the new normal? Whereby we SHUT DOWN every year we have a particularly bad strain of the flu for which we have no vaccine or a poorly performing one? Or has this become our Little Boy who Cried Wolf moment in the arena of pandemics? And when we do little or nothing with the next one … it will be China’s MOAB-Virus that wipes out enough of America that every Chinatown in America becomes Americatown in the Western-PRC?

PS … Walmart would be a shocking waste of your talent (although you WOULD rise rapidly through the ranks) … I will do my best to keep you from choosing that option.

  4. keep on blogging kate. there are a lot of disgusting people out there and we have to rise above them. we have to ridicule them more these days but they make it soooo easy.

    1. X2

      I’d suggest

      “Nil Bastardum Carborundum”

for the blog motto – if it isn’t already

  5. South Korea appears to give a crap about it’s citizens. Unlike Canada’s Liberal Party who has seemingly done everything in it’s overreaching power to shut down the private sector Middle Class taxpayer in this country.

    1. You can’t just single out the federal Lieberal Party for criticism. Every provincial government that I can think of has followed suite. Be it the ENDP or UCP or Sask Party or Conservative parties; all have behaved with similar hysterical madness.

      1. No argument with you there. But in this town, at least (Calgary) the city government, led by our self-absorbed mayor Nenshi has been even more draconian in it’s regulation and enforcement. Never met a socialist who thought he had too much power/control.

    1. I refuse to live like a Bejinger … riding bicycles and wearing masks everywhere. That’s about as backward a dystopia as I can imagine.

  6. I don’t buy into the theory that the virus was weaponized, because it’s not the weapon.
The weapon the CCP is using is the fear generated by it.
This is why I stated that when a vaccine is discovered it changes everything.
My hope is that it’s discovered in a western lab that hasn’t been compromised by the CCP.
This would give the west leverage in a way the CCP could not subliminate or coopt to hide the fact that the west beat them, and the fact that they would be dependent on the good will of the west to help them. On that day Zi would be looking for somewhere to hide.

    1. Do you know how many years they have searched for a vaccine for the common cold. The common cold is a coronavirus. Vaccine will never happen. Read Sun Tzu

      1. Jeez Watcher, shut up, people don’t want to hear the truth. They will be coming for you. This has to be a complete shutdown of our society with total control . You know, a vaccine with a tracer in it a la Bill Gates. I’m getting good at this conspiracy stuff.

      2. I thought that the common cold was a family of viruses (viri?) that were different enough and mutate / change fast and often enough that there wasn’t a permanent enough marker to grab ahold of? Similar to nailing jello to the wall.

  7. https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/legal-groups-eye-suing-government-to-roll-back-covid-19-restrictions

The Koreans have group think down to a T. They also have a social hierarchy that’s pretty strict so these things work in their favour.
In Canada a dude was arrested for flying to New Brunswick to live with his parents. He was fined and sent back. That’s illegal.

Somewhere in the middle would have been better. Hardcore monitoring and protective systems, orders and procedures.
Contact tracing has been going on for quite some time specifically for STD’s.

I am and have been a big time proponent of protecting vulnerable people, like my 86 year old mother and others with weaknesses, but in order to do this, we must be an economically viable state.
It is a serious disease for some, but people have lost their businesses, jobs, homes, property and lives and they never got sick.

I hope that’s not insulting to our host.

    1. Buddy, if the whooWHO flu has proven anything it is that Canada is broken. Check out the article at Just Facts for a perspective on how people may be effected by a continued lockdown.

    2. “..Contact tracing has been going on for quite some time specifically for STD’s…”

EXACTLY. As for those that have loved ones, Typically Mom – Dad – Aunts – Uncles etc in Nursing homes….these folks lives are just as valuable as ours or our Kids. Anyone disparging them as cannon Fodder… Well you simply have no place here whatsoever.

Kate I’m actually surprised that those that do donate to this Blog, are in the MINORITY.? WTF.??

Being one that does, I’m very surprised that many here who talk of their “stocks n bonds n investments” etc, cant find it in their heart to do so at 5-10 dollars a month. WOW…I’m retired live on CPP/OAS and a very small business income…And I have zero issue doing so.

Shame on those of you that are too cheap to pitch in something.
Carry on Kate – SDA will have my continued support.

  8. The Data are skewed. Canada went through a Baby Boom from 45 to 65… So that cohort still is a major influencer of simple analyses. The Baby Boom will be through in 15 years with or without Covid

  9. “Europe’s best-selling newspaper announced this weekend the lockdown in response to the Chinese coronavirus pandemic was a “huge mistake,” citing a number of public intellectuals critical of the country’s official response.”

“Prof. Klaus Püschel, for instance, a respected pathologist and head of the Institute of Forensic Medicine at Hamburg University Hospital, argues that “in the end, COVID-19 is a viral disease like the flu, which in most cases is harmless and is only fatal in exceptional cases.”

    1. I’m a long time lurker to this site as well. I’ve only posted a couple times because I feel I struggle putting a coherent sentence and post together compared to all the others intelligent posts that end up here anyhow. I feel this is a pretty important topic and there are a lot of strong feelings on it so I’ll give it a go. This site has always been a valuable resource for myself to one, validate my thoughts and instincts on a particular subject or story and two, get intelligent opposing views that can make me question my thoughts and beliefs on other matters. Now with that you’re always going to get people posting here that bring nothing to the conversation or debate but in this type of format you have to expect that and in order to have a lively debate put up with it to a certain degree. I also think it’s valuable to understand who all is out there and just what thoughts are rattling around in their brains.
On the Matter of this virus there is more than one right answer. First by all accounts this obviously is a deadly virus for many elderly people and some health compromised people. I agree with the common sentiment that more needs to be done to protect these vulnerable and to continue to protect them. With that said, many of these folks were on deaths door anyhow and they were on borrowed time. Im not trying to downplay the tragedy of a new rogue virus taking their life but something was going to get them just like something will get the rest of us when our time is up. We have an aging population that in a lot of cases has been artificially kept alive longer due to modern medicine and the comfort of living in a modern and largely caring first world country. We’re also seeing the opposite of that with relatively young people in first world countries dying. Ironically that’s also because they live in a modern comfortable first world country where there has been no real requirement or incentive to stay healthy and fit. Look at the spike in diabetes in our society as one example.
The other truth is that all governments are now using this virus as an excuse to remove our freedoms and get a tighter grip around our necks. We are seeing it at every level of gov’t including the left and the right. I find it scary as heck how easily people fell into line and the large army of “Karen’s” everywhere ensuring no one steps outside that line. The msm will continue to distort the truth and scare the public all for clicks and to further the agenda they have. They love a scared controlled population, they get to have our undivided attention and can then further cram garbage down our throats, just look at the new gun ban for the latest example. I feel the people commenting here are more than justified in being sceptical of nearly all the Covid coverage by the msm. They have proven to be completely unreliable for almost every other matter in modern time’s. The hysteria over climate change, Donald Trump, Steven Harper etc. etc. Heck, just look at the latest ‘Murder Hornets’ and all the idiots blabbering about those now.

I for one feel the actions of what Sweden took should be the model for the world. Protect the vulnerable but let the public stay free and take the responsibility upon themselves to get themselves through this. I for one trust no level of government to know how and what I need to do better than myself. Just like this forum, there are all kinds of people out there, intelligent and thoughtful, stupid, ignorant and crazy but there are enough laws and rules to deal with them already.
Unless we all want to conform to one thought and belief system we need the freedom to chart our own course and be allowed the freedom to choose what that is.
Oh and FWIW my vote is that this virus was part of a bioweapons program that accidentally got released.

      1. Excellent post. I agree with everything you have said. For sure all governments seem to be using the virus to increase their level of control. Very concerning.

      2. Please post more often. Coherent, logical, on topic, and not denigrating of other posters.

        +1

    1. No one with strong grasp of history. Monoculture nations are often much welfarier and less free than diverse nations. Scandinavian countries come to mind. South Korea too for that matter.

      1. No such thing as a diverse nation. If it’s diverse it might be a state – a political entity – but it ain’t a nation.

      2. An interesting switch. In past months you’ve been promoting open borders for economic reasons, and now you’re noting that monocultural nations are often wealthier. What changed your mind?

  10. The number who are going to die from untreated or under-treated cancer and heart disease is going to be a large multiple of those dying of Wuhan flu. It’s time for our leader to unplug their heads from their asses and get on with life. Make a special effort to isolate old farts but let everyone else get the disease and get better. That’s the ultimate plan anyhow. If we had wanted to stop the disease we wouldn’t have flown dozens of planes of untested people from China when they themselves banned internal travel. Turdeau and Tam need to be tried for treason and meet justice Ceausescu style.

  11. “your chance of dying of it is smaller than being struck by lightning. ”

    That’s a lie.

    1. I looked at lightning deaths per year vs vivid deaths for young people. Fewer Clovis deaths.

  12. What Michael Kim described was similar to what happened during the SARS outbreak. There was heavy screening at airports and hospitals were ready with all manner of equipment and medication.

It stunned me that South Korea was not as ready this time around.

Canada had none of these things during both the SARS and this coronavirus outbreak.

Some countries want to overcome hardships and become better. Canada is not one of those countries.

  13. One bit of comparative analysis during the Covid-19 pandemic that has been missing is not only infections, the health policy responses by governments and economic responses, but also infringements on constitutional norms. In the U.K. despite the lockdown and sometimes ham fisted response by the local constabulary, there was some limited access to the courts and parliament was still in session. In the United States, there was a vote in Congress for the aid package. Meanwhile in Canada, the Prime Minister has thrice attempted to increase power and reduce oversight. Charter rights for freedom of mobility have gone out the window, what with Quebec, New Brunswick and Nunavut closing their borders. Oh and access to justice when the courts are on limited sitting. There needs to be a graph relating restrictions on constitutional norms (e.g. legislative sessions and court hearings) and a country’s success against Covid-19, as well as how soon these restrictions are removed.
