    In 2017 the total deaths in NYC from all causes was 53,806. This gives an average death rate of 147 per day.

    Note in a typical US flu season deaths in the winter months are 20% higher than average daily deaths. So we could expect 147 x 1.2 = 176 deaths per day if this was a normal flu.

    Now let’s assume COVID is the same as a bad flu year, with three times the normal flu deaths. So we’d expect the daily deaths to be 60% higher than the average daily deaths for the year; or 147 x 1.6 = 235 deaths per day if this was a bad flu year..

    Now go to Daily Counts at the link and look at the daily deaths in NYC. The daily deaths reach 556 on 7 April, and are above 235 deaths from 29 March to 20 April.

    My conclusion? In NYC this appears to be worse than a bad flu year

      1. The daily total deaths in New York City are much higher than any year going back to 2008. I looked at the NYC and NY state for the years 2017 to 2008. Remember 2009 was supposed to be a bad flu year.

        I couldn’t find NYC total death data for the epidemics in 1957 and 1918. Which I would adjust for population, if I could find that data.

        If you have total NYC deaths from all causes for 2019 and 2020, I’d love to get a link. I couldn’t find that data. Might try again tonight.

  13. Oh. Hey! That was my first gaming machine. I wrote the card game engine for it as a class project. I still love APL.

    1. When I started at my alma mater as a sophomore undergrad, I learned how to program in FORTRAN using WATFOR/WATFIV on the university’s 360. Due to its heavy usage by students, it was replaced the following year by an Amdahl, which some wag called the first IBM clone.

      The result was that jobs submitted to the latter machine were ready in 1/10 the time than on the other one.

        Our decks were quite small, but it was a pain to get behind grad students who sometimes had decks that were four to eight inches thick. Their programs could take a long time to run. Then a buddy got the idea to remove or switch several cards at the front of their decks so their programs crashed. Dirty? Yep but we got our jobs done.

          FORTRAN code was restricted to a maximum of 72 characters per line (the first 8 spaces were reserved for control characters such as “goto” line numbers). Make a mistake in typing, which often occurred, and one had to make a whole new card.

          Yeah, I made a lot of typos. I’m sure there were a number of people who learned new swear words by overhearing me whenever I had to correct something.

          Thank goodness for stored program files.

          With respect to grad students with large program decks, I heard a story about one poor chap at UBC. Apparently, the incident occurred in one of the on-campus residence towers shortly before I started grad studies.

          Someone pinched his deck, maybe as a prank, took it to one of the higher floors in the building and chucked it out the window. Punch cards all over the place.

          Imagine what that grad student had to go through. First, he had to recover as many of the cards as possible. Then he had to get them all back in the proper sequence and replace any that were missing. Hopefully, he had a printout of his code.

My Uni geochemistry course became FORTRAN 4 and I spent a lot of time down at the “Computer Science” counter with wads of 80 column punch cards trying to think like a 3 year old, to get some routine geochemical info to plot. Vowed to hire some computer geek to do the stuff that I ended up wasting inordinate amounts of time on.
        Computers are just a tool, never let them (like your “smart phone”), run your life. I use a flip phone I can control now.

    1. Based on a number of comments she has made, I do not think she understands the concept of individual liberty and how this is central to a democratic philosophy. To some extent, this comes out of her Chinese background. Now I don’t mean that in a racist way, but different cultures simply have different ways of thinking and many Chinese are collectivist in their thinking. Even the strong capitalist Andrew Yang shows signs of this.

      The John Batchelor Show recently repeated an interview he had with an author of a book about the DPRK. Succession in that country can only happen by blood and along the male line. Kim Jong-un had 2 brothers and 2 sisters, one of whom is Kim Yo-Jong.

      One brother is a bit of a ne’er-do-well, another Dear Leader Prinz Dummkopf, as it were. He was seen trying to get into Disneyland Japan several years ago and probably might not return to his country, if he knows what’s good for him. The other is, apparently, somewhat effeminate and may even be, well, you know.

      That left, by process of elimination, KJU. The thing is, he’s not very bright and rumour has it that KYJ is the real power in the DPRK. She’s a real charmer herself and could even scare the dickens out of Lady Macbeth or Lucretia Borgia.

      Two of the problems faced by KJU was loyalty as well as credibility with the military. After he took over, factions began to emerge and an uncle, who was a high-ranking officer (general, I think), was associated with one of them, though not for very long. KJU had him executed….. by firing squad….. using anti-aircraft guns. The Sopranos and the Corleones have nothing on that lot.

      In order for the military to accept him, he had to show he had some leadership ability. The sinking of the South Korean warship as well as the shelling of a South Korean island a number of years ago were attributed to him and the claim was made that he planned both incidents. The reality is likely that someone else figured out what to do and he was given credit.

      As far as the DPRK being “democratic”, yeah right. The young lady obviously has no sense of political irony. Every communist dictatorship claims it’s democratic, such as the Deutshes Demokratichesrepublik (i. e., the German Democratic Republic, sometimes referred to as East Germany, as in the land of the Stasi).
