  1. What is the difference between a returning snowbird that may or may not be infected vs. someone already here that may or may not have it.
    If we exercise common sense, limit our interaction (including 6 foot space) and practise other preventative measures the returning snow birds are no more deadly than our own neighbour.
    If you’re not comfortable with a snowbird coming close, just ask them to back off.
    Yes, they should have headed straight home. Groceries can be ordered for delivery, etc.
    However, let’s not turn this incident into a mountain out of a gopher hole.

    2. My wife and I returned from the USA and are in day 3 of self-isolation. Not a big deal because someone was at home to keep the fridge stocked.
      The NP article mentions that everyone returning is given a handout at the border. We did not receive one when we crossed at Sumas BC.
      More notable is that the border security officer we encountered was uncharacteristically rude. When I answered his question about how long we were out of the country with “a little over two weeks” he said, “And you chose to go vacationing in the middle of a wordwide pandemic?!”
      I had kept abreast of the WHO’s daily statistics, and when we departed in early March the number of cases per capita was higher for Canada, there was no ban or recommendation to avoid travel, and the day before leaving we purchased travel insurance without any issue whatsoever. So I replied to the officer that when we left there was no pandemic.
      Not placated, the officer said somewhat sneeringly, “And now you’re returning to Canada from an infected country!”
      So I responded that “My understanding is that I’m returning TO an infected country.”
      He muttered something about me being a piece of work, asked the value of goods we were bringing back (which was only about 20% of what we were permitted), and whether we committed to voluntary self-isolation for 14 days. After we said yes he returned our passports and said to have a nice day. With less than customary sincerity.

      With regard to whether to single out snowbirds for scorn, the likelihood they have contracted COVID-19 while abroad is essentially no different for them, and depending where they were, possibly lower than the person going down to Walmart to harangue them. Only since about March 19 does the WHO’s data indicate that the per-capita infection rate in the US overtook Canada’s. So on the being-a-jerk scale–by not staying home–the Walmart parking lot admonisher is on roughly equal footing with his admonishees.

The manner of the almost bi-lingual Federal Government Employee was even more brusque than usual coming back from our Three Month Snowbird Time in Florida’s Pan Handle.

        We truly find the our usual Friends from across the Mid-West of the U.S.A. really caring and close Persons, now for over 15 Years as We move into Our Eighties. Sorry if our spending long days and working Week ends for close to thirty-five years and employees approximately Fifteen in number is a problem. But Small Business Employers are really impeded in Canada and Ontario if a Couple sets into a company agenda of employing Twenty (20) or More Employees. The Increased Regulations usually entail hiring another Overhead Employee. (the U.S.A. Small Business cutoff is Fifty (50) and the assistance for survival is apparently easier to access, especially with the Vulture approach of Canada’s Chartered Banks. You know the ones which receive low cost Government expansion $$$$ to spin into Loans. Which have been know to waste Billions of Dollars with dumb decisions. (easily determined). Any ways I can go on further about having Federal Government Employees receiving Extra Pay & benefits for doing Their Jobs in the forced to be Bi-lingual Provinces of the now defunct Confederation of Nine Provinces; while the other Federal Government of the Nation of Quebec is officially a Uni-lingual Country on its own.

          Having compromised lungs after a Bypass op….I have no wish to drown in my own fluids thank you kindly. It’s a day by day thing as I’m sure many here have also experienced and know what I mean.

      2. One of the Hutterite boys stopped by yesterday with a bag (5) of roasting chickens. These are big birds 6-7lbs.

        The hoots are factory farmers and have a lot of food at the colony. I paid him and he said,” I’m looking after you. Whatever you want I deliver- even after dark.”

  3. The bigger issue for me is those of us who circulate within Canada’s international airports but who don’t travel overseas. I’m sitting in a hotel room with a guy who flew from Aruba to Toronto, a guy who flew from Vancouver to Toronto and a guy who flew from Toronto to Timmins. The Aruba guy had to self-isolate for 14 days. The others are fine to contaminate – I mean travel.

    3. I expect it’s because the traffic on I-95 (which I believe is the route I-87 intersects) has a reputation of being horrible – especially around Washington. We have friends from Nova Scotia that cut over to I-81 and follow that down into Vitginia and then east via I-77 into North Carolina.

  6. Blackie’s health minister announced today that people entering Canada will be in mandatory isolation at hotels. At taxpayer expense of course. Hope it doesn’t displace the migrants in those hotels.

The same returning people that don’t think the self-isolation applies to them are same people that disregarded the CDC & Trump administrations directive for anyone in the US to self quarantine from March 16-April 01 to slow the spread. I cannot believe the blatant disregard for others that these arrogant jerks have. They’re from QC so I should not be surprised.

    Tell Canadians still overseas they’re on their own, and express the hopes of those of us who can’t afford foreign vacations that their Cuban rentboys were worth it.

    Until this is over, deny entry to all but truckers trying to enter by road, even Canadians, unless they can show proof of sufficient funds to self-quarantine in a hotel for six weeks, paying the hotel rack rate upfront in cash. I doubt many people would be able to do so.

    The truckers themselves should be suffered to enter for only as long as it takes to unload their cargo, to be re-loaded on a Canadian truck. Under no circumstances should they be allowed to leave their vehicles.

        1. You haven’t heard of the companies which allow a hole that allows human refuse to go directly onto the hwy? My trucker friend knows about that. And how would a Muslim driver working for a Muslim transport company fight for a raise in pay and fewer hours? It’s how the M companies are outbidding other Cdn truckers. Where he stops across the border, he’s been told that they pull in there and some don’t speak or read English.
          For those who are annoyed at the RVs stopping at Walmart: they can go online, place and pay for their order and not come in contact with anyone. If it isn’t delivered to their RV, it can be picked up at the drive-thru. I’m having my cleaning lady pick up an order for me tomorrow. All she needs is the order number.

LMAO….yea, first time I saw them was in The San Fernando Valley on a Sales Expedition (10 days install/train Big Sub Arc triple wire Welding system in Vallejo for the New Frisco Bay bridge 2001). We were on our way to Fresno and i noticed lots and lots of these Yellow liquid filled Coke 2L bottles on the side of the road – not knowing precisely what they were, I asked the local rep I was with …Whasssat..?? He says, piss bottle from the Mexican day Field workers. they’ll jump 6-8 in a van and boot it back to Mexico – no piss stops till they hit the border.

        I laughed…never forgot that sight.
        That was 3 months after 9-11. 4 days later I damned near got shot by some pimple faced 18 yr old Nat Guard kid with an Automatic rifle at SFX ….things were just a little crazy then.

        And got booted off the flight cause some goof at Air Canada used the next name down from me (1 cursor down), on my Boarding pass. So some standby girl got my seat and i was off the plane. I near tore the Stn heads head off…I was pissed..!! Dec 23..K.? 10:45PM and I got no luggage nadda.

        Got bk to the SFX at 5:45Am took an hour (1 km long lineup), to go through security…finally got on a flight to YVR 1st Class – got in my seat and flight attendant asks me if I’d like something to drink…..Uh yea. TRIPLE scotch forget the ice and keep em comin.

        Landed in YVR got hassled cause i had nothing but my wallet and cell phone to declare “wheres your luggage.??” more dicking around trying to explain wtf happened…..and finally off to Calgary on a connecting flight. Trip from hell.
        TRUE story – sadly.

        All thanks to a Fkn QUEBEC RUN and owned Pisspoor Airline.
        I do not fly with them to this day.

  16. We stopped off at the Superstore in Brockville yesterday and were told this story by the cashier. Hard to believe people can be so stupid and/or selfish. I’ve pulled into Walmarts before and stayed overnight. All these people had to do was flag a passing customer and ask them to contact the store manager of either Walmart or the Superstore (they are beside one another) and ask if they would deliver to the RV. I guarantee the result would have been positive.

    Forget Quebec bashing for a moment. I just spoke with a good friend who works part time at the No Frills in Picton. She mentioned they had a customer walk in to shop who was coughing and sneezing while wearing a mask. The woman admitted she had tested positive for the Wuhan Coronavirus. The management called the police on her – not sure what happened next but this idiot had suggested the cashier disinfect after she left. At the local village bakery, the clerk mentioned that someone, who had just returned from Florida, walked in to buy some items. She had to tell the person to leave. Neighbours on both sides of us are under self imposed isolation with several other neighbours grocery shopping for them.

    2. Sorry Gord in the US the traffic was horrendous last week. We were part of massive truck and RV convoys. The only good thing was the level of speed.

      1. Pretty light on our route which went through Salt Lake City, Boise, and Seattle.
        In three days the only congestion was a 5 to 10 minute crawl in SLC because some pour soul got into a rear-ender and a box or two of clothes spilled out and burst open. No obvious injuries but still felt sorry for whoever’s shirts, blouses, coats, pants, and sweaters were gradually being spread northwards across five lanes of freeway. Wouldn’t want to have been in their shoes… people were driving right over them.

  19. I’m not all that worried about a few people arriving in their own largely self-contained RVs from another spot in N America. Odds are they aren’t infected and the risk of them spreading infection is relatively low.

    I’m far more worried about 300+ sitting in one of those flying virus-incubators all breathing the same stale recycled air and farts for several hours and then being disgorged into an airport adjacent to an urban center.

    Many of them were secure and safe in their rented spots, or traveling around in the state and federal park system in the USA, and an RV is truly a safe place to stay in an epidemic, when out of the blue many states in the USA started shutting down all parks, RV campgrounds, rest areas, and the like.

    There’s nowhere they can go right now in the US. They’re suddenly stuck, and need to get home without warning. So, don’t blame them.

    1. They could have picked up enough provisions in the US for the two weeks before coming back into Canada, but you can’t get a 30% bonus using US cash in the US.
