I have a friend in Italy undergoing cancer treatment that’s unavailable here. From a Facebook post earlier today;

“Yeah, I’m not trying to spread hysteria here but I’m in Italy so I’m seeing this first hand. I was booked to have an operation yesterday for my cancer, it was booked months in advance. I went in, saw the tents outside of the hospital for coronavirus patients, went to meet one of my doctors and she took me to the oncology department which was also the very last ward not being used for coronavirus patients. I wait for 7 hours, then am told that they will not be preforming the surgery this week and they are unsure when they will have any time or space for me.
 
Too long didnt read? They shut down the fourth building of the hospital of oncology to make beds for coronavirus patients while a doctor in tears told me I would not be getting the life extending operation I booked.
 
Not trying to be melodramatic but honestly a little sick of people posting memes and telling themselves its nothing to be afraid of. It is effectively capable of shutting down the healthcare systems. Be prepared, especially my American friends.”

      1. On thing to keep in mind about those fatality numbers is that many countries (including Canada) are only testing the ones who are landing in hospital. They are ignoring they asymptomatic ones or the ones that recover on their own. So the 3-4% figure is probably accurate. However there are also two new strains now, L and S. L is far more virulent and spreads more easily. We could also soon have some newer ones that are even worse. Every human infected is a petri dish for creating new virus. Most new mutations are defective and fail…most.

An aside it’s also a sad reality that our universal health care can’t do better than a liver cancer patient having to fly to Italy for treatment he should have gotten here in a timely manner.

        1. Don’t be too hard on them. We aren’t privy to the real details of this person’s particular cancer case. The US is just next door, so why Italy? Speaking from experience on care, sometimes heading to Emergency is the quicker care option.

  4. Any of you see the CBC interview with one of our chief health people? He said Canada doesn’t need to worry because we’re isolated and have very few flights in from China. Then they had a guy from some left wing think tank on the government payroll saying Canada’s approach of letting people in because you can’t stop the virus anyway and you do more harm than good if you try to restrict travel is the best approach.

    We’re doomed.

    These are the numbers. Draw your own conclusions but I do not find these statistics in any way alarming.

    2. This is the result of it spreading for six weeks.
      Only a small percentage of people who get it die. A larger concern is that around 20% require hospitalization/ICU.
      It is currently advised to keep suspected covid -19 patients in isolated, negative pressure rooms, and not to be transported through shared waiting rooms or hallways.
      Of course some people are carriers before they show any symptoms.

  8. Spring is coming. Rising temperatures and humidity in the northern hemisphere should help ease the increase of new cases. By Fall perhaps we’ll be better prepared for any return of this coronavirus or its mutations. More medical supplies, more temporary wards, better checks on travelers, more resilient supply chains etc.

    1. I have traveled a lot and actually lived in Toronto for 25 years. I do not like traveling through the Toronto airport at the best of times (too many airport personnel who are clearly from the Middle East) and now there is the added stress of travelers from infected countries not being screened. There is going to be a major problem.

    Its simple math: this virus is an addition to, not an alternative to the flu.

  13. I’m booked for a pacemaker surgery in Edmonton in 2.5 months. The timing should work out such that we’ll have a virus surge on our hands here about the same time as my surgery date and there will be no capacity for my pacemaker surgery. I’ve got 4 months of battery life left and I seem to be using it at the predicted rate. That means, being pacemaker dependent, I’m dead in 4 to 5 months if I don’t get that replacement.

    The good news is that we beat the crowds to stocking up on tissues and hand sanitizers so my wife will be in good shape at my funeral.

    2. Pacemaker replacement surgery is day surgery. They usually replace the pacemaker rather than just the batteries. You will not need a hospital bed that will be needed by a Coronavirus patient. You will be in surgery for about 20 minutes then get crazy glued back together and given a Tylenol.

      You can do this standing on your head. Just like I did. Good luck.

      1. This will actually be pacemaker number five. The problem is that local anesthetic doesn’t work on me. It barely numbs and I burn it off completely within half an hour. They have to use general anesthetic otherwise I’m trying to crawl off the table from the pain of people rooting around in my shoulder. Couple that with some other health complications and they usually keep me at least overnight for observation. Good times.

  18. For all you who are working yourselves into a frenzy, my mother died in her 63rd yr from an undiagnosed liver abscess after being hospitalized at a teaching hospital for nearly 2 months. I ordered an autopsy so it would hopefully help some other poor soul if the doctors knew why she had a raging fever which caused her bed to shake.
    My 88-yr-old brother is at the moment recovering from a liver abscess. Maybe they did learn something….like how to sharpen their diagnostic skills.
    Buy your hand sanitizers and toilet paper and worry yourselves to death if it is making you feel better. (Altho’ I must say james @8.37 is in a class of his own. )
    My goal is to be here in November to see Trump win another election, if it isn’t cancelled due to the death of either of the over-70-yr-old hopefuls.
