Your Moral And Intellectual Superiors

I sometimes think of Stephen Harper and wonder what might have been…

‘Boris Johnson has privately confirmed that he will definitely privatise Channel 4,’ a Conservative MP told the Sunday Express. ‘He thinks it’s a great idea.’

Shipley MP Philip Davies, who sits on the Culture, Media and Sport select committee, said: ‘I’ve been arguing for years it should be sold off.’

Channel 4’s relationship with Downing Street has been in the deep freeze since the prime minister cancelled a planned interview with the broadcaster at the G7 summit in Biarritz, France, in August, following Ms Byrne’s claims.

Mr Johnson also cancelled a planned interview with the channel at the Tory party conference in October, and snubbed their political debate on climate change in November.

The prime minister was replaced by an ice sculpture at the debate, which gradually melted throughout proceedings.

  1. Does not balance out nationalizing the northern rail or promising nosebleed spending.

Here’s what would have been with Harper: people still going to jail for marijuana, more spending, and still no pipelines. He sucked.

  2. Not gonna happen here, there is not one politician with guts to do it.
Some “do want to”, that is as far as they get.
Their consultants and strategerists stop them every time.
Check with the British program Yes, Minister.

  3. I was a big fan of Harper. In the early minority years I gave him a lot of credit for being able to maneuver within Canada’s liberal frame. His moderation seemed to be respected and rewarded by many regular non-partisan voters.

We kept waiting for the majority when he could more easily become a transformative leader and by the time it arrived the entire CPC had internalized the moderation message to the point of gelding themselves.

On top of this, the culture was moving in a woke, ultra-left direction and by 2015 it was over.

Now it’s too late. Reform is over. Something new and more strident is coming.
All these cucks of yesteryear are doomed. The Buffalo Declaration is a pathetic attempt at gatekeeping.

I just wish it was happening faster.

  4. I was a fan of Harper. He managed to reduce the deficit to pretty much zero by the end of his term. I was also a fan of his wife who I saw a few times in Toronto making time for the gay community (through fashion) although this was never really reported. I never met her personally.

During the last election you could see Harper did not have the heart for another term. This is what happens to conservatives when the whole country hates your guts because you want to balance budgets and don’t throw money around at third world shit holes.

Harper was too much horse and not enough hat. Trudeau is all hat and no horse. Mackay is a guy without a hat looking for a horse.

    1. My problem with fiscal conservatism in a democracy is that all it ever does is build up fiscal capacity for future leftist governments to blow.

I’d rather run $100 billion yearly deficits on tax cuts over a single term and leave the future leftist governments with bare cupboards and forced austerity.

      1. This sounds like the Trump Tax Cuts. Huge reductions in income taxes, and in return employment has gone up. And guess what? We are taking in more money in taxes today than we did before the tax cuts started. The only problem is we are also spending a lot more money. So the deficits are growing just like they did under Obama. And growing like they did under (both) Bushes.

We are Spending More Money? Because guess what? Our Establishment Republicans also refuse to cut spending. Have they cut PBS? The National Endowment for (Ugly) Art? They vote with their Washington DC buddies to keep the pork flowing.

        1. ” in return employment has gone up. ”

There’s no evidence of this. There’s been no change in trend of employment from Obama to Trump.

“We are Spending More Money? Because guess what? Our Establishment Republicans also refuse to cut spending. Have they cut PBS? The National Endowment for (Ugly) Art? They vote with their Washington DC buddies to keep the pork flowing.”

That and Trump wants more and more spending.

        2. It’s CONGRESS that is responsible for funding and revenue.

This Dysfunctional Congress doesn’t know its ass from a hat. Nothing will change until 2021 when the current crop of Marxists are removed from the Chairs, then real leadership can occur

          1. “Nothing will change until 2021 when the current crop of Marxists are removed from the Chairs, then real leadership can occur”

Nothing will change period. You probably weren’t paying attention because that requires a mind, but the GOP had Congressional control recently and did nothing buy jack up spending. Trump has shown no serious intent to decrease spending he signs every budget.

      2. That is actually a good strategy. Leave the cupboard bare by giving tax cuts. Kills future billion dollar giveaways to foreign countries where the money is pocketed by political crooks.

      3. That’s the way to do it – the economy would boom. Harper’s fiscal discipline was used by Trudeau to finance large increases in expenditure in harmful or wasteful ways. If Harper had gone for large tax cuts, Canada today would be a much larger and healthier economy, and the left would be out of power.

        1. Yes, Harper did not go far enough. So where is someone with the guts to do it? The conservative leadership race is a disaster. We will probably win, but what good will come from and O’toole run? He is almost as naive as Scheer.

No one is stepping up to the plate. Peter MacKay has showed, recently, how ineffective he is. It will take a brave person with exceptional values, vision, judgement and organizational skill to lead Canada, and, as far as I can see, no one of substance and credentials wants the job. That is very sad. We are headed into a recession, as this will be very ugly for Canada, as we have a pathetic Liberal-induced-economy of nothing. Kenney is under-performing, as well.

Income tax should be cancelled, if you want the GST.

      1. Exactly. And to others, yes Harper was the best that we have ever had. I think that he just got tired of all the crap thrown at him.

    2. Harper lost because he sucked. His passion was for spying on people and throwing them in jail for doing things he didn’t approve of ex MJ, prostitution. Pipelines and budget balancing were far in the back. 100 dollar a barrel oil made him power crazy. Anyone with sense would have stepped down in 2013 instead of running the worst re-election campaign ever.

Oh and no deficit-financed tax cuts won’t work. Spending IS the tax. That’s money out of the productive economy into the unproductive. Your plan has failed before it would fail again. There’s no substitute for cutting spending as Kansas found out.

      1. (shaking head) and he’s gone to his happy place again, where numbers and colours and sounds mean exactly what he thinks they do. What is the sound of one hand clapping? Green banana.

Go take your meds. He made the job look easy enough that a part time drama teacher could do it.

  5. I liked Harper as a PM a lot. He did some excellent things for Canada, and was by far the best PM Canada had during my 55 years. Yet two massive failures will always taint his legacy. The biggest is not privatizating the CBC, the other is not scrapping C68 entirely.

    1. As noted above, he noticeably appeared disinterested in the 2015 campaign, and did not fight back against the horrendous, slanted lies and distortions of the media.

Would sure like to know why, prior to that, best PM in my lifetime, without compare. I thought Cretch was arguably the worst with spawns DNA donor, but this current execrable mess of a SCOAMF takes the title with no competition!

  6. On this site, we talk a lot about defunding the CBC.
That would have been an excellent step, and a prudent financial one. But what would it have accomplished as far as the culture and information flow in Canada?
CTV and Global are both in the tank for the left, as are most newspapers and all magazines. We have no conservative voice in the MSM, no Fox News North. TrueNorth and Ezra and a few others are great, and they are informing those already onside, but they are not reaching the public the way the MSM is.
As much as I personally hate CBC news, and the soyboys who love to listen to it, defunding it would not have changed the results of the last 2 elections, IMHO.

    1. It’s not about election cycles it’s about removing a billion dollar a year leftist propaganda machine from the culture.

Less is more. It should’ve been done.

When I get these CPC calls requesting a donation to help stop Trudeau’s Liberals I just cringe. My hundred bucks versus billions for the left? Get lost.
You know it’s a grifting racket or they would’ve done something years ago when they had the chance.

  7. I too say that Mr Harper was the best PM in my 77 years lifetime.
In hindsight, his last election-period was too long …. his economic record was great. But The Party had sh*t loads of $$$, mine included, and they wanted to spend it. Sadly.

  8. The CBC and it’s private sector (now bought-off) clones are the de facto anti-conservative party and propaganda arm for the institutional left and by proxy, its LPC, NDP, and Green components. Every day they are still in business, the authoritarianism, green theocracy, post modern nihilism, and statism is defended and promoted in the form of pabulum resembling targeted conscious sedation. Fortunately they are dying in popularity but given the shameful public acceptance of the further corrupting grease by the Spawn’s government, they will continue as a zombie, lazy, incurious and ideologically bankrupt echo chamber. On this file, Bojo has it right.

  9. On the same topic, Conservatives and the press.

Have any of you been commenting on National Post articles lately?? I see they are slowly going following the path of the CBC. Comments being taken to moderation then being deleted. The worst is a notice that says, ”This conversation is not closed.” (Sounds like a familiar reply to a broken Liberal promise.) Now we find out they are using the same website as the CBC for the comments section. (Viafoura.) Good luck getting your comments out.

    1. The NP is a cuck site. Save for Rex, Connie, and the FP side, it’sColumnists write defending Trudy and his liberal supports regularly (Shelley, Cosh, Coyne, et al). Yes, it was a shock to see their headline LEADERLESS this week, there goes their cut of the 600 Million!
Comment section is a joke, overrun by Liberal plants and propagandists, but conservatives get banned (holding hand up).
I prefer commenting on their FB site with my nom de plume!

      1. “t’sColumnists write defending Trudy and his liberal supports regularly”

        That’s a lie. Stop being a baby.

          1. Don’t disturb UnMe with evidence. He’s in his happy place. Making other people shake their heads and ask “wtf?”.

  10. Could you imagine having to have a loisense to own a TV in Canada for CBC funding purposes? I’d tell the cops to stuff it.

  11. the harpoon could have enjoyed a 20 + year reign and STILL he would leave a public broadcaster in place.
I may have bit my lip and voted for the bully butt for that.

  12. good grief.
the many ways of viewing vids that have cropped up in the last 40 yrs, many still in use, and
*STILL* the brit gubbamint requires a ‘license’???
wtf year is it over there in britannia???? wasnt that locale the setting for ‘1984’ which also involved televisions?

    1. Yes, but, according to our informed friends from Brittania, Sargon for example, Boris has the largest majority in decades. That’s when one needs to take the bold steps and set things straight, like, killing the BBC, ending that egregious TV tax, etc.
We pay an enormous price, for a CBC that hardly anyone watches, save for Liberal apparatchiks and employees. Their news programs regularly are the most poorly viewed, and it’s not even close. Their experiment with the National, was a colossal failure, with their multi-gender, multi-racial, millenial choices. It did not resonate at all.
It’s a make work project for LPC apparatchiks.

  13. It’s simple. Decriminalize the non-payment of the TV licence today.
Send out surplus BBC “slebs” to go door-to-door selling subscriptions.

If you like your BBC you can keep your BBC.

  14. There are no reasons a modern state should be involved in broadcasting or sponsoring entertainment.

Private companies are willing to send 1000’s of channels into Canada if the CRTC was told to get with the 21st century.

It’d be a stoke of genius for PM Johnson to defund the entirety of the BBC and completely cancel the Tv licensing fee in the UK.

  15. Stephen Harper was a monster. He killed that little Syrian boy. It was all over the papers, yet he was never charged! An outrage!
