  1. Long time sci fi fan here. Dr. Who is dead, died mid-way through the last actor. Star Trek – Picard was still-born and won’t be watched by me (the linked summary shows me I made a good choice). The Sad Puppies movement was a good reminder to the reading community that those who are woke are still a small minority among those who look to the distant future.

Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek was optimistic about the future. The original Dr. Who was a defender of humanity, not a scolding nag about how the universe must be protected from us. The left is pessimistic, and can’t understand how things could be or get better if they would just stay out of the way.

    1. I second much of what you said.

If you have not, watch The Expanse. The first 3 seasons at least are what every sci-fi nerd (especially hard sci-fi) enjoys about the genre.

I find myself rereading older sci fi lately instead of the new stuff. All to often you get into something new and realize to late the woketard poison is present and only sprung on you well into the book. Really disheartening.

      1. All of this, although The Expanse lost me when they brought in aliens and wormholes.

Once upon a time, writers of F/SF had Actually Done Things before settling down to write books. These days most F/SF writers’ experience is limited to reading a lot of F/SF in college. Thus, you get warmed over versions of other, better works, combined with the tripe they learned in college.

I’ve been working my way through pre-1982 (the year D&D ate the genre alive) F/SF lately and enjoying it immensely.

  2. Dr. Who is dead, died mid-way through the last actor.

Actually, it started going downhill about 40 years ago while Tom Baker was playing the Doctor. The new producer, John Nathan-Turner, decided to change a lot of things about the show, including the theme and opening credit sequence. I’ve heard that was one reason why Baker, long regarded as the most popular actor to play the part, left the series.

By the late 1980s, when Sylvester McCoy was the Doctor, the show had pretty much spent itself. By then, it had become unwatchable for me.

    1. That’s nonsense. Nine and Ten had some great episodes. Even Eleven, when he could stop flapping his hands about.
I didn’t much care for Capaldi. But then, I didn’t like him in The Thick of It either.

Up until Doctor Woke they were still getting great actors. It’s the writing and plotting especially that are getting to be substandard.

Proud to say I only watched three Capaldi episodes. And NONE of Doctor Woke. And I never will.

      1. I think it’s telling that Chris Ecceleston only lasted a single season, and it’s because he refused to play the Doctor as a twee fop.

      2. I gave up on the “new and improved” Doctor Who part-way through David Tennant’s run. By then, the show had become far too silly for me. The spirit that drove the show in its early days, starting with the original Doctor (William Hartnell), had long gone.

      3. ABSOLUTELY BANG ON….Semi.

        The EXPANSE

That series is one of the Best Sci Fi Shows in Decades. Technically EXCELLENT…!!! with a very good story line and actors. I’ve read all the books and the TV Series does them justice for the most part.

  3. The Big Finish Dr Who audios are worth a listen but they are getting ‘woke’
Oh well, we have our memories

  4. For the Picard haters, I think Shatner said it best: “Get a life! It’s just a TV show!”

Seriously, it’s just fluffy entertainment for crying out loud! It doesn’t merit that level of analysis, introspection, or criticism. In other words, it (and many other things) are not worth thinking on that much. I for one have better things to do with my brain. I’m also not really into feeding the plethora of YouTube “critics” who are shilling their unsolicited opinions for a little scrap of ad revenue.

    1. Except is not just a TV show. It’s a foul mouthed liberal propaganda where Picard is constantly lectured by brown men and women. Patrick Stewart does not mind it, he is a geriatric has been trying to stay relevant espousing his well documented anti Trump bullshit.

  5. Data is still my fav character.
reminds me of myself in numerous ways.
I have a form of autism and can do over 1200 pounds on the leg lift machine.
