Pipeline protesters linked arms to physically block Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland from entering a meeting at Halifax City Hall.
 
Freeland planned to meet with Halifax Mayor Mike Savage on Wednesday, but a group of protesters standing in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en First Nation in British Columbia blocked the front door of the building.
 
“No thank you, no thank you,” a protester told Freeland, adding that she may need to call the police to remove the group. “This will not happen. This meeting is not happening.”

That tells you all you need to know about where the government stands on the rule of law. It only applies when identity (and green politics) isn’t involved. The RCMP were there to protect the sanctity of the illegal Indian / anti-pipeline blockade. No different than the war in the woods of thirty years ago. It’s just moved out of the woods to where the general public is affected. If the RCMP aren’t ordered to clear the blockades, there will be violence and it will be well justified.

  3. As a Canadian citizen I am a voluntary signator to a system that has taken several hundred years to develop and formulate. It is called a social contract. While not perfect it is a system that has advanced mankind for the common good. As a two sided contract I voluntary comply with the rules and laws that are developed by society and in exchange society forms a system that protects, preserves, and propagates that society. To accomplish these ends I pay taxes and abide by the law as created by society. I may not agree with some of the laws that society creates and administers but for the greater good I comply. In this compliance I pay taxes, knowing that without the taxes society cannot function. However we have now reached an impasse it that the taxpaying members of this society are now approaching a minority and are required to pay an increasing tax threshold because of the demands placed on our society by members that are not cognizant of the rights and responsibilities of partaking of our society. These latest ‘demonstrations’ are a deep and troubling sign of how skewed our society has become. When the government created by a society cannot or will not adhere to the laws and responsibilities of the societal contract that empowered it we will no longer live in a responsible society. It is time, past time, for society to demand action by the government to ensure its protection, preservation and propagation for the common good. To delay will only ensure a speedier descent into anarchy and chaos.

    1) central Canadian voters didn’t care about anti-energy, anti-pipeline protests as long as Albertans were bearing the brunt of the personal and economic damage.
    2) the central Canadian chattering class , including journalists, ignored the influence of foreign donors and foreign influence from both the environmental movement and foreign business interests, despite good investigative work by Vivian Krause
    3) central Canadian politicians have emboldened anti-Canadian energy environmentalists and aboriginal groups through regulations targeting only western Canada and by Trudeau giving Quebec a veto over pipelines and by demonizing western Canadian energy workers/companies to get votes in Quebec and Toronto.

    Recalls sayings about reaping what you sow and what goes around comes around. Maybe central Canadian voters, their chattering class and their politicians should take some responsibility for what’s happening. Now that it is mildly inconveniencing them instead of just costing one disliked,faraway province billions by blockading Alberta’s trade/exports and destroying tens of thousands of energy workers jobs, of course.

  40. my little story about Canadians, I live in Texas, right by the border. here in the winter we are flooded with Canada’s winter Texans. I met a lady from Ontario. see was a school teacher and her husband was a school superintendent. since I used to own property in Manitoba, I have a lot of friends in Manitoba and sask. . we were talking one day, and our conversation drifted to politics. I said something derogatory about black socks and she got all upset. she asked were did I learn that. I replied, small dead animals. boy, did she go ballistic. called me and SDA a bunch of trouble makers and some nasty words. you should not be reading such garbage she said, to this day, neither her or her husband will talk to me. I feel better now.

  42. The Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba sent out an email today asking for contributions.
    The reason was to show support for the Premier, who had threatened to get an injunction against the protesters.
    He didn’t actually do anything, but just made the empty threat.
    Of course by then CN had already gotten an injunction, and the rail blockade in Manitoba was ended.
    Asking for money for accomplishing nothing pretty well sums up the feckless politicians these days.
