    1. Never heard of it. Then again, I’ve long stopped paying attention to anything that Hollywood produces.

        1. Hollywood never produced it. No wonder I never heard of it. Then again, I’ve long stopped paying attention to anything cinematic that been produced in recent years, doesn’t matter where’s it’s from.

          1. That’s too bad. There are some wonderful films being produced in many countries (and of course, lots of crap). I believe that film is the primary medium for cultural expression in our era. Oscars don’t usually capture it, but there is a lot of depth in some of today’s films — especially international films. Parasite is Korean. I just found it over the top — started out well, then lost its way. I would have preferred France’s Les Miserables for Best International Film. Ford vs. Ferrari was also up for Best Picture. Probably not Best Picture calibre, but lots of fun to watch. You would like it, B.A.

          2. Remember all those dubbed Sophia Loren movies that left you begging for a J. Arthur Rank movie. My wife said she would skip school to watch an afternoon movie. At one o’clock the J. Arthur Rank gong intro would strike and she’d go back to school.

    Having never missed an academy awards show in living memory I am extremely disappointed that a little known flick entitled “Parasite” won the Best Picture of the year. This is a slap in the face to American cinema. The title is aptly named.

    Great speech tonight by Best actress winner, Renée Zellweger for her role in the movie “Judy” about the life of legend Judy Garland.
    Renée’s acceptance speech was worthy of an academy award in itself. It was perfect.

    Joaquin Phoenix won best Actor for his role in the movie “Joker” he rambled on and on but did not thank anyone. Very shocking.

    Laura Dern won as best supporting actress for her role in “Marriage Story” – glad she won, it’s her second nomination and first win. Her acceptance speech was sweet and gracious.

    Brad Pitt (sigh!) won an Oscar as best supporting actor for the flick “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.” His acceptance speech was as humble and gracious as can be. He deserved to win because as good as Leo was, Brad really did carry the whole movie. It is due to come out on Crave TV next month. Do try to take it in. Its really worth the time. It was a Quentin Tarrantino masterpiece. Bravo Brad Pitt. What a sweetie– looks like he took his mom to the Oscars with him.

That “little known flick”, O Someone Who Wasted Five Hours of Her Life Watching Celebrities Pat Themselves On the Back, is just an example of how foreign cinema is quite capable of producing a film worth watching and Hollywood has stagnated and opted instead to make eye-candy and pontificate to the proles.

      Did anyone watch that movie? I did. I would rather watch a film like that than any of the tired, re-treaded muck Hollywood produces.

      Martin Scorsese was right. Hollywood doesn’t produce films, just spectacle to be watched.

      Like the Oscars, for example.

        1. Yeah … it wasn’t much of a stretch for him to portray an unhinged nut bar. Simple typecasting.

  5. My library has thousands of movies from the 20s through the present time that can be rented for absolutely free. It doesn’t cost you $30 to see a couple of flicks. Also, the popcorn is fresher and cleaner from your own kitchen. My library also has dvd players to check out, if for some reason you don’t own one. I can also read a good book on a Sunday evening instead of watching some self-grandizing people on tv whose job is pretending, so they can pretend they know their ass from a hole in the ground about anything else other than pretending.

      Tonight, I watched yet another episode of that terrific mini-series The Jewel in the Crown, which I got on DVD a few years ago. But, for most of the evening, I tinkered with stuff that I bought at a ham flea market yesterday and never bothered listening to or watching anything else.

      My mind was so occupied that I never noticed the lack of background distractions.

      Last night, though, I made the mistake of watching the movie Bull Durham on TCM. It was produced more than 30 years ago, but it was still a lousy film, a pathetic and lacklustre sex comedy masquerading as something about baseball.

      Fortunately, I spent most of the evening going through my flea market treasures, so that rubbish was a mere distraction.

    2. We swear by our public library for DVDs. Last night, instead of the gruesome Oscar ceremonies, we watched The Farewell.

      As we lived in the UK for some time, we also have our own collection of British and European DVDs (Region 2), so we have a multi-region player.* We routinely order DVDs through Amazon UK, allowing us to watch British period and police dramas right after they’re available in the UK. No waiting for the series to air on PBS or similar six months to a year later!

      The greatest boon is the technological marvel that the humble TV has now become with the advent of the flat screen and high definition.

      When you can sit comfortably in your own house and watch whatever you want whenever you want on a big, crisp screen – and enjoy a beer while doing it – why would you put up with going to a cinema?

      * Regional DVDs: another corporate market-control swindle.

  7. We just left the TV off for most of the evening after the XFL games were over, different but interesting no less.
    Then while channel surfing later I came across “The Cars That Made America” series on the History Channel.

  8. I tuned in just as the montage intro into Eminem began, so I was hooked. That made no logical sense, but it was great anyway.
    There wasn’t a lot of political preening for the most part, so that was good and to his credit, joaquin called out cancel culture at the end of his speech.
