      Pipelines are one thing and arguably under federal “control”. Resource extraction is explicitly via the constitution a provincial responsibility. There is no cross-boundary environmental interest in this. Even if you argued about the validity of pollution and emissions and whatnot, none of it would exceed Alberta’s boundaries without being diluted below the point of detection.

      There should be zero federal involvement on this file. Zero.

The situation is exactly why the federal government should not be allowed in provincial natural resource decisions : The federal government is crippling Alberta’s resource economy to get votes in Quebec and Toronto. That’s why the constitution left those decisions to the provinces – to prevent Ottawa from using its power to cripple one region at the behest of another region for political power.

    It’s an absolute lie that it’s about CO2 and climate change because the federal Liberal government had no reviews or objections to huge CO2 emitting cement plant in Quebec (The cement plant will be Quebec’s largest industrial emitter of greenhouse gases when it comes on stream, producing at least 1.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent a year – globe and mail). Neither did they have any concerns over a massive new offshore oil development for Newfoundland (Chinese oil company gets go-ahead for exploration drilling in Flemish Pass Basin – CBC, Dec 18, 2019).

    What the federal Liberal Party of Canada is doing to Alberta is malicious interference designed to cripple Alberta’s economy. Canada, by re-electing Trudeau, has shown its alliance with the Liberal’s planned destruction of Alberta’s economy.

  17. Suncor took a significant write down on Fort Hills this week (which they run pretty efficiently). All these projects are dependent on basic economics.

    Oil production is up world wide and even if approved I doubt Frontier will be built at these prices or forward pricing.

    But maybe that’s not the point.

    1. As I think about it, they are stuck in their own trap. They could approve a hundred mines that won’t be built—business Just doesn’t run like that— and we would shut up.

    People believe resource extraction–especially of hydrocarbons–is evil. People believe that this project will immeasurably damage the world/Canada’s/the local environment. People believe they can live and function and survive without hydrocarbons in their lives. People believe that Alberta is greedy and ungrateful and WANTS government handouts.

        Think of the disruption you can cause for them if there where more Bloc riding associations outside of Quebec than inside Quebec.

            Here’s the point. Nobody in any part of this country will believe there is a real problem in Alberta until Albertans start acting like there is. Everything up to this point has been pissing and moaning and idle threats.

            If you block the trans-Canada with people and their vehicles, that’s a headline that will say “angry protesters”. If you drop junkers and piss off, that headline will likely be “vandalism”.

            The images of decent, ordinary, hardworking folks protesting is something that resonates with the public…and terrifies politicians. If the public sees folks like themselves resorting to protest, it instinctively knows that things must be pretty bad.

            I have posted here before that the greatest tool in politicians’ toolboxes is the certainty that Canadians may piss, whine, and moan, but that they are too craven to get up off their arses and engage in the civil disobedience that the situations call for. And by enduring the continuous and escalating indignities heaped on them over the past five years, Albertans have demonstrated that they are made of exactly the same stuff as their eastern brethren.

        2. Naturally, the civil disobedience protest movement should consider Frontier Rebellion as their name if it is inspired by the Liberal Party government cancelling the Teck Frontier mine.

See what happened with the long haul truckers who drove to Ottawa . Only protests consistent with liberal progressive ideology gets sympathetic treatment from the Canadian media.

          Creating hours and hours of gridlock at multiple point over an extended period of time near large urban centers in central Canada and on national highways will draw far more attention. Can go on for months with very little manpower or time commitment needed.

            Yeah, the Trawna media (predictably) tried the tarnishing crap here when we did the OLA blockades. But the public saw through it. Even Liberal city-slickers can’t be convinced that Grandpas and Grandmas with their grand-kids are “rural militants”.

            There’s a thousand excuses for inactivity, and I’ve heard them all…and the prediction of “unfair press” is one of them. What you have to realize is, that when it comes to sustained escalating actions, as far as initial press coverage is concerned, “it’s all good”. What you’re aiming for is disruption; make it to big to ignore and they’ll have to cover it.

            Set the stage: a week or two in advance send out press releases saying that there will be a series of escalating actions. Then get at it.

            You can expect intimidation from the cops, and support from any politician is unlikely. But you’ve got to leave your home in the morning saying to yourself, “I am prepared to get arrested today.” And if you’re not, then your commitment to your cause is less than firm.

A Yr round open Deep Water Port that can easily handle VLCC-ULCC Tankers (350,-50,000 bbls per). Instant access to Asian Markets.. Not having to build a deep water port, dredge etc would save Billions that could easily be spent building said pipelines.

        The Alaskans have said quite a while back (2014), that they would love our product in their system…What’s not to like.??

  26. The only thing that matters to the MTV in that daily talking point is that per Mr Unnamed Source the decision whether to allow the project or not will cause disruption within the liberal caucus.
    That is the only thing about this that is causing any heartburn to the laurentian elite, full stop.
    Now, who would be the benefactor(s) if such an idea started to take hold that the liberal party has again breaking into factions, and what might those factions be?
    One obvious answer is that the MP’s that are all about “Climate Change”(tm) would be opposed to the mine approval. Should they begin to feel they aren’t getting the attention they deserve (like liberals do) all that would be needed is a champion inside caucus for these disgruntled MP to coalesce around.
    But this is just speculation on my part.
    This is just another case of the media having its buttons pushed.

  27. Jason Kenney was elected with a mandate to actually do something.

    Nothing will become of our Oil and Gas industry projects until other provinces like Quebec and B.C. get behind them.
    Politicians from Ottawa, B.C. and Quebec will not bend when it comes to Oilsands Oil. The only way to get the politicians to move is to have their electorate demand it. And the only way to get their electorate to demand it is to get them involved personally.

    No other action will do this until we shut off the valves East and West to get their attention.

    The lack of Oil and Gas will affect the general population by increasing the cost of gasoline, increase home heating costs and increase the cost of Propane to operate their farms.

    This will get their attention. It has to affect them personally, or they won’t get involved. They just don’t care as it doesn’t affect them personally.

    If we curtail supply this will result in putting pressure on their politicians.

    Anything less than this will not work as we have seen. We just keep getting more of the same stalling tactics, which we have been subjected to for the last 4 or 5 years.

    Talking time is over. Action is required. It is time to act and be bold.

    On the resource sector argument, one half to two thirds of Canadians would prefer green poverty to prosperity, vote accordingly and deserve to get it good and hard but political power trumps all logic and Canada would be rid of the LPC with Quebec gone but still blessed with their NDP brain trust and Green priests. Then if we work on western separatism at the same time they might help us just to appease Quebec.

    Now Canada is currently a carbon dioxide sink,as atmospheric CO2 concentrations increase and IF we were warming,Canada would become an even greater sink..Due to even greater plant growth.

    So to become NEUTRAL we must emit much more CO2.

  31. After reading through all these great comments, I felt a desire to respond to several, which would be tedious and time consuming. So, I’ll just add it to the whole comments section. I live in BC, north of the lower mainland, and get a little upset when not invited to be included in the Wexit ideas. I, and a whole bunch of BCers are conservative too, and are just as Po’ed as the rest of you on SDA. The minstrel clearly has it in… for western Canada in general, but yep, I agree, mostly for Alberta. He hates us, and hates the oil sands. It’s dirty oil doncha know! OK, my contention, is what they are doing by extracting from the oil sands, is cleaning the sands, and improving the environment by doing so. So it’s a win win, for the greenies, and for the pro oil side too! It’s just that the greenies are too rabid to see it! The other point I wish to make is this theory of mine.

    When crime escalates, the electorate get rightly agitated, and demand the Government “Do Something!” Therefore, there is a symbiotic relationship between government and criminals. If we could magically get rid of most crime, drugs, and thugs, we wouldn’t need even a half of the Government we have, nor the amount of RCMP officers. The government need to keep the population fearful, to keep their numbers high, and handouts and swill feeding going, and going strong. So introducing more “gun control” without affecting crime at all, works for them. As has been said, if the Government say’s you don’t need guns, then you really do need guns! MikeT above made a reference about the minstrel adding a 75% taxation to capital gains. Think it through. If say, the minstrel decided to tax us all, at fifty, sixty, or seventy percent of our incomes, to pay off the national debt for example, or to assist with becoming carbon neutral, the populace would revolt, there might even be a civil war! I doubt it though, cuz were so frigging complacent here in Canada, but if it did happen, all the legal gun owners would be lending their spare guns and ammo to their neighbors, to fight back. So, who, from the Government’s point of view, is the real threat to their trough slurping? Do you really think that gun legislation is actually misdirected, when it’s only aimed at legal gun owners?

  33. I’m for separation even if Ottawa returns every penny they’ve ever stolen from us and every living MP crawls on their knees to every household in Alberta begging for forgiveness.
