    The wankers who are running the show aren’t interested in producing conditions that will make others successful. Rather the Laurentian Elite are more interested in keeping what they’ve got or selling it all off to China.

    They are interested in the success of Alberta and Saskatchewan and other resource rich provinces like a hole in the head. How in the hell does bill C-48 and C-69 pass constitutional muster when resources have been repeatedly designated as a provincial responsibility. (See Constitution Act 1867 S92 and S92A)

    I see bill C-48 doesn’t prevent Saudi conflict oil from making the eastern seaboard; whilst Alaskan oil merrily makes its way to points south in the USA with carefree abandon. So this is the fair treatment of oil and gas producers in our own supposed excuse for a country, interested in its own citizens succeeding?

We are watching a massive social change in the world, the propagandized are taking over while our generation has one foot in the grave. IF the happy and satisfied politicians in Alberta and Saskatchewan DID decide to throw their careers away on separation, the new country would probably experience some relief,for a few years, until the millenials take over there too.
        The original idea started in the 1930’s when the Comintern decided to spread their theology to the world, and though it took almost a century, their ideas have been successfully inculcated into the masses in the West. It’s sad and funny in a pathetic way, to observe the madness that passes for normal these days. Our history and our way of life has been destroyed one step at a time. The only solution would be a bloody revolution but we’ve had that ability civilized out of us years ago. We are sheeple, some of us are still defiant, but not in sufficient numbers to actually accomplish anything.
        One of the largest costs to the system now is all aspects of the care of Seniors, and as the millenials have been taught to despise and outright hate us, you can imagine the result in a few years.
        It’s depressing that so many conservatives seem to think a change in the color of tie our politicians wear is “the answer” to it all. That might provide some temporary relief like a patent medicine pain killer for a headache when the cause is a brain tumor. As a civilization, in my opinion, we are thoroughly fucked.

  4. Is there any sort of logical reason for staying in canada? I find it kind of astonishing that there is only 30 or 40 percent support for leaving confederation. What does canada have to offer Alberta or Saskatchewan?

    4. If Alberta and Sask. weren’t part of Canada, what would the terms be for joining Canada? Would representation on the SCOC be part of that? Would both provinces want MP’s based on a floating number that represented the number of people living here?
      Instead of having +140,000 people now that are represented by 1 MP in Alberta.
      PEI has 40,000/1 MP, the other Atlantic provinces and Sask. have between 80-95,000/1 MP.

      If Alberta had as many MP’s as PEI has, we’d have 112 MP’s instead of the 34 we now have. We wouldn’t be eating a garbage carbon tax if 1 vote in Alberta = 1 vote in the Atlantic provinces.

  5. The Laurentian Elite have a progressive bent no doubt. But if Westerners think that is what drives their agenda IMO they are not comprehending the full extent of their purpose. It is about controlling the financial levers of the country and political control is the tool. Much of industry in Canada eminates out of Ontario. Prefered status has existed for hundreds of years. Much of industry and politics co-mingle in the management of the country. ie SNC, Power Corp, the Banks.

    The massive success of the Alberta oil industry was a threat to the Laurentian Elite. As much as the NEP and Equalization funneled money east it was not enough to stiffle the shift of power out West. As much as Westerners take comfort in the idea that easterners are ‘misdirected’ in their attitudes towards the West I suggest it is very calculated. It is about raw power.

    Whether the Wexit Party will have the where withal to redefine the West within or outside Canada is to be determined. As much as the focus is on Alberta it also includes BC but for different reasons. BC is the gateway to Asia and its power is growing steadily. Alberta oil is no dif than BC LNG gas which was set back a decade by environmentalists funded from the east. Westerners have to understand the full extent of how Canada is tilted in favor of Ontario/Quebec. The core of the dispute is in the balance sheet of the country. Money taken in by the feds and where it is spent. International trade deals that favor eastern industry. Internal trade that favors eastern industry. Federal government legislation that favors eastern interests.

    It might sound a tad crass but it does come down to the money. Many easterners equate patriotism by the Wests willingness to leave their wallets open. If nothing else the passage of time has shown what that means in the West.
    Hundreds of thousands out of work and depleting resources. Quite frankly easterners don’t give a rat’s ass about that.

I would note that you’ve captured here much of what Stephen Harper stated when he was quoted, “The West wants in.” It was indeed about a rebalancing of the financial levers within Confederation. This has become much more important over the past 40 years as the sphere of government activity rose from about 16% of total GDP to some 25% today. It is indeed very much about power as you state. A much larger share of Canada’s economy and population is now found in Western Canada than was the case in 1970.

      There are parallels with our neighbours to the South. They too went through a large political rebalancing which came to a climax in 1865. This was at least in part driven by the fact that the United States had grown too large to be ruled solely by the concerns and political interests of the original Thirteen Colonies. It is my view that a much better basis for agreement among Canadians is possible, desirable and mutually beneficial without having to resort to the sort of excesses of the US starting in 1861.

    1. Where do you think the funding for every legal challenge against every attempt at moving Canadian Oil by Pipeline comes from. It’s the same place that gave Vancouver’s Ports the windfall of exporting US Coal because they prevented every US West Coast terminal proposals from happening. You might get cooperation from Alaska but you wouldn’t from the lower West Coast.

  15. I think most Westerners know what they want, a better deal. When asked if they are happy with the current deal an overwhelming majority are not. So, it’s not the “what”, the issue is the how. The significant disclosure in the NP article “Of course Parizeau’s people had a detailed implementation plan ready to launch upon a favorable result”.

    Those who want a better deal must understand the mechanisms in place within the constitution to prevent a better deal. Any substantive change will only come about with the approval of 7 out of 10 provinces that represent 50% of the population. That is a very big hill to climb. I would argue that it is an impossible hill to climb. Change will require either Ontario or Quebec to approve and all the Maritimes along with one of the western provinces. Generally, people do not vote against their own interests. Voting for a new deal would be beneficial economically to the west but not the rest of Canada. Jason Kenny and Scott Moe are very nice, well intentioned people but they are not miracle workers. Going on bended knee to request a more equitable deal may play well in the press but it is not going to work.

    It is essential that this road be travelled. Kenny and Moe’s failure will increase the feelings of alienation and frustration causing more people to seek alternative, more effective and radical solutions. Some folks will attempt to use existing political parties, Sask Party and United Conservative Party, to facilitate the more radical solution. Having an evolution of thought would be desirable but I am not sure it’s achievable. However, if that’s the road you choose good luck and I hope it works. When it fails, there is still another road.

    So, what is the alternative? This is where education must be combined with those feelings. It is essential that the population understands that there is no favorable resolution within the current framework. There is no hope that this understanding will be communicated favorably within the regional or national media. It must be through word of mouth and a social media campaign. All the smart, frustrated people need to get involved. Clear messaging developed to communicate what is at stake and how to achieve it. The it being independence. As Kate says, “I want a new country!”

    In order to convince the majority, a detailed implementation plan for independence should be developed and communicated. Every aspect of this plan should be subject to the question, “is this solution better?” Once in place and communicated, a referendum would take place asking a simple question, “Are you in favor of establishing a country separate and apart from Canada?” When the results are 50% plus, a Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) is enacted and communicated to the world. Steps are taken to put in place the detailed implementation plan.

    This is not a better scenario, it’s the only scenario.
