Libertas Alberta

SDA’s longtime friend, Gord Tulk, has joined other conservatives in his province to create a society called Libertas Alberta. Their goals are not just to conservative policy but methods and legislative pathways that make them politically achievable. They became official in January and are having their first public event on September 26th at 7:00 pm MDT at the Baymont Inn in Red Deer. Admission is free but they would appreciate an RSVP via their website: LibertasAlberta.ca

The topic that night will be: Equalization – What it is and how to Fix it. It will also be a Facebook Live event.

So hoping you will check out their website to get a better understanding of the policy projects they’re working on.

And if you’d like to join, membership is $10/year or unaffiliated observer status is $25/year.

  1. I want a new country. Canada is malformed and no amount of tinkering or talking or whinging is going to fix it.

  2. Nothing will happen until a cogent viable western separatist option manifests itself within an existing or new pan AB SK political entity. Anything else is just passing gas. Without a big bargaining chip you are wasting your time.

  3. “methods and legislative pathways that make them politically achievable”

Yep. Let’s face it, venting in comments sections and occasionally breaking out the yellow vests is fun and all that, but the Left is much better organized, especially at the local level.

Keep you eye on the ball, friends.

  4. Do you have to be from Alberta to join? And more importantly, when Alberta separates, is this a path to Citizenship?

  5. “make them politically achievable”…

Judging by the so called “thoughtful comments” I have read from him here, don’t waste your time or money. Don’t back a Romney, when you need an actual fighter, like Trump.

    1. Kevin, I’m really surprised that you would make such a comment. It is stolen from the playbook of the Far Left who tear each other down if they feel “the other” fails some sort of litmus test.

Gord has been a thoughtful contributor on here for years. Just because one isn’t a Trump fanboy, but is still very much a conservative, doesn’t mean that they need to be destroyed.

      1. Sorry but a Trump is needed badly because our “conservative leaders” turn into a puddle of goo whenever the media threatens. We need fighters, not bus drivers. The ouiqualization numbers are gross. Last I checked, Cubec had the 2nd highest per capita revenue of all provinces but was number 1 afterward. The three Western “have” provinces were 8,9, and 10 post equalization. The entire program is corrupt and cannot be tweaked because the west lacks the political power to do so. The only path to “freedom” is separation, central canada will never take their hands off our wallets. They take with one hand and accuse us of greed with the other, and the sheeple buy it. They need a dose of fiscal reality, which can never happen as long as we remain part of this dysfunctional and insane country.

        1. “Sorry but a Trump is needed badly because our “conservative leaders” turn into a puddle of goo whenever the media threatens. ” – I actually agree with you. But that still doesn’t mean that people who aren’t fanboys/fangirls of Trump need to get destroyed, like some on here seem to feel is necessary to do.

    2. I share Kevin’s skepticism. The GOPe had to be defeated to break the stranglehold of the UniParty here in the States. It took someone who broke the mold to effectuate REAL change. I don’t fully understand the realpolitik of Canada … but I suspect it is quite similar to the States. Even worse … you appear to be split 75-25 in favor of rent-seeking takers over makers. I hardly see a viable place for polite, purdy-speaking, Bible-verse-quoting, “true conservatives” to lead Canada in a new direction.

Look at Romney. He is actively working AGAINST MY President and is doing everything in his power to restore the GOPe to power and prestige. Actively trying to return America to “business as usual”. Thank God HALF of America (and 85% of conservatives) said NO thank you to any more GOPe capitulation.

      1. Well that’s encouraging … sounds like you’re ready to vote for Mr. Tulk’s milquetoast conservative Candidate. Welcome to our side! Baby steps … baby steps …

BTW … your denial thing … ignoring and pretending Trump isn’t nominating conservative Judges, striking-down officious regulations, expanding manufacturing, cutting corporate taxes and repatriating $B’s in US cash, cutting middle class taxes – including my family’s, eliminating the punishing Obamakkare mandate, building the wall … is some kind of willful mental retardation. Your denial is pathetic

        1. I’m not the retarded one. I’m not pretending that Mexico’s ever going to pay for a wall or that some regulatory trimming is going to outweigh dollar devaluation, import tariffs, or the war on immigration. I’m also not going to pretend that all the appointed judges in the world are gonna stop the coming Proggie Monolith. It’s basically game over: retards lose.

  6. I too am with Kevin on this. Do we need more talking? NO.

“Equalization – What it is and how to Fix it”
END IT. NOW No more talk.

    1. Libertas Alberta explores many problems and potential solutions. We have many participants with varying opinions, but all of it is to help advance conservative policy. I’m personally advocating for separation, but in the event my ideas don’t pan out, hopefully some of the others brought forward by Libertas Alberta will succeed.

  7. Well, I don’t live in Alberta, but I support people who will get up off their arses, speak out, and do something. So my donation is en route, Gord. Best of luck.

    1. Many Thanks Jamie. I think the skeptics and bleacher generals will be surprised by what we have put together on equalization and I’m also really excited about what we have in the wings on senate and healthcare reform…

  8. No donation from me, but good on you Gord for following a path that you think is going to accomplish something.

I tend to agree that we need to get rid of EQ altogether…and that likely includes separating from confederation. And yes…Alberta separation is about as likely to happen as canada letting Alberta sit at the table before Quebec, PEI et al are done licking our plates clean.

  9. Tinker with equalization? Why? There shouldn’t even BE any “equalization”. Stop giving them life preservers and getting denigrated all the same despite it.. Sink or swim.

  10. I’m with Kevin, talk is cheap action is what’s needed. I would hope western separation would include BC. I would like to see a Conservative party not the regressive that now masquerade as con. Keep in mind in those could’a had Max group. What’s in a name? PPC is that like peoples republic, and why anyone would vote for a pol from Que. And Gord why start your name Liberal. I have voted in every fed election since I was 17 “I was in the RCN”. I am ashamed to say I voted lib as it was an anti Def vote. When turd sr showed me how corrupt the libs are I held my nose and voted regressive conservative. Except for a few times voting reform I have had to vote “none of the above” and I tire of it. I think that until people realize that globalist/socialist/communists are all the same pile and stink just as bad Canada id dead. For me killer Gretchen killed it and shit head Harper drove a stake through its heart so it can’t come back.

  11. No one is leaving anything because they do not have the balls or the intellect to do a damn thing. Courage is something that has vanished like freaking snow in June.

  12. Fix what? A system that facilitates some provinces receiving daycare paid for by provinces that cannot afford such extravagance?

Kill it, ruin it, crush it, take it out to the cleaners, defang it, make it nonexistent. That’s how you “fix” equalization.

Rim shot into the garbage can of history and failed policies.

Subsidizing failure is the Liberal way, provided they benefit of course, but not the liberal way of natural rights, community, civil society and the consent of the governed. We are so far removed from good government that it seems like a different time.

A time when actual liberals are defamed as intolerant ignoramuses by intolerant ignoramuses, now posing as “moderates.”

A moderate thinks the government takeover should be gradual, rather than outright confiscation of factors of production.

A moderate thinks we should use social shaming, fakery, smear and fear to persuade, not vote a cancelling firing squad.

But give them time, after all they are progressives. Kill equalization dead AB. Start collecting provincial income taxes.

That’s my input for the Society. Thank you.

  13. Time for some dumb, out-of-the-box but still serious questions:

    1. Is there a law that prohibits one person from being the premier of 2 provinces (Alberta and Saskatchewan) at the same time?
    2. Is there a law that prohibits any group from dividing the province (or provinces) up into constituencies and electing an alternative government?

    1. 1. A person could probably run for Premier in two provinces but could only vote in the one province where he/she currently lives. Good luck trying to get anybody to vote for you. “Longshot” is probably a word you should become aquainted with.
      2. Not legally, or without sufficient military resources (see: Putin in eastern Ukraine). Only by getting the existing MLAs to cross the floor to your new seperatist party, or by winning an election using the current boundaries (like the Parti-Quebecois tried to do with their 1980 and 1995 referendums) and then trying to change the system from within. Again, good luck with that.

      1. I think with the right premier, Sk and AB would vote for a common premier. Sitting in both leg’s would be complicated but, really, is anything important actually done in the legislature anymore? One you have big majorities the premier just has to make nominal appearances. At one time, AB would have elected Brad Wall when we had the Redford/ Stelmach clowns running things in AB and then that idiot Prentice. Wall could have defeated Notley in a heartbeat.

Then you start merging government departments, harmonizing regs and reducing taxes and have way more bargaining power with the eastern mafia.

        1. The “Bureaucracy” wouldn’t allow any merging of government departments. The labour unions, the managers, the deputy ministers would all lose power in such a situation, thus, would riot in the streets. They’re “entitled to their entitlements” and no one, especially lowly citizens, would be allowed to get in their way. (Right now they are preparing to go to war with Kenney because he might reduce their pay by 2%.)

          You want speration?
Wait for the inevitible minority government mess that’s coming on October 22. Wait until a desperate Trudeau starts negotiating with Greens and Dippers to save his skin. See how committed he is to TMX then (not much at all.) The riots in 2020 won’t be from environmentalists blocking pipeline crews. It will be Albertans & Saskatchewanians (sp?) blocking eastbound trains and big trucks from BC.

          1. You are correct. Electorate needs to create fear in the hearts of anyone on the public trough. Only through fear can we create change. That’s basic psychology

  14. I’m mildly interested, but not optimistic. For one thing, it’s conservative so it’s going to fail. Failure is congenital to conservatism. But the website is real nice.

RE equalization: yeah it has to be destroyed but only if it isn’t replaced by worse. You know what’s worse than hucking around money to the provinces that then spend it on education? A federal department of education, like the US has. Don’t put strings on the money!

I also really hope we don’t hear this nonsense about directing the money to ‘us’. Once the government takes the money, it’s gone. It doesn’t really matter much if it gets spent in your province or not. Equalization needs to be cut not re-allocated. It would be an improvement if the EQ program were cut by half and ALL the money went to Quebec and the maritimes!

  15. Oh God Red Deer? Anywhere that isn’t Calgary or Edmonton isn’t really a place in Alberta, and Edmonton is an awful place. Focus on Calgary!

    1. UnMe!!! You are actually making a bit of sense with your last two comments! Not total sense, but just enough sense to not be dismissed as a lunatic. You feeling OK buddy? Worried for you.
