Social Disease

Tumblr stumbles;

Verizon is set to sell the social network Tumblr to Automattic Inc, the owner of online publishing tool WordPress. A source familiar with the deal puts the price-tag “well below” $20 million, while another source puts it below $10 million.

The big picture: Tumblr, while unprofitable, hosts more than 450 million blogs and was once considered a major player in the social media space. The network was acquired by Yahoo for $1.1 billion in 2013, before moving under Verizon’s umbrella through the carrier’s acquisition of Yahoo in 2017. Verizon’s desire to sell Tumblr had been previously known, but as of May, Pornhub had been the only bidder to show public interest.

  1. Only Pornhub has shown interest because nobody has ever found a use for Tumblr other than for reposting pornography.

    1. A$$ Canadian, it is the go to site for aspiring priests. A year or two ago the Vatican drag a bunch of priests (pedos) to be out of Ireland because they were tumblring too much

  2. WordPress does not impress me … and now they’ve taken themselves even lower in my estimation.

  3. “Pornhub had been the only bidder”
The ‘magic’ of the world wide web perfectly juxtaposed with the gritty reality.

  4. Verizon also owns Yahoo. The latter was bad enough after Marissa Mayer took over as boss and started fixing what worked. It became worse after the merger.

    Coincidence?

  5. From 1.1 billion, to 5? million in 6 years.

Oh well, good thing there aren’t other massivly over valued companies that never made a nickel.

    1. Tumblr was worth 1.1 billion when it was crammed with porn.

As Verizon found out, Tumblr without porn is worthless.

      1. I’ve heard that Tumblr started censoring photos that it deemed offensive. It started because someone in a certain country, an adherent to a certain social system masquerading as a religion, saw something that was considered objectionable and Tumblr went ape.

One result was that people began moving their Tumblr content over to other services or actually closing down their sites.

  6. tumblr takes a tumble. how apropos . . . . .
also, yet another ‘social media venue’ I NEVER posted to.
    not once.
    nope.
and on behalf of the ‘investors’ who missed that episode of ‘American Greed’: adios to the billion ‘with a B’
