  1. If Alberta becomes an independent state, will it be because we have left Canada, or because the rest of Canada has driven us out?

    1. Probably the latter. When I was at UBC nearly 40 years ago, and Lougheed and PET went at each other concerning the price of oil, most Lotuslanders I spoke with showed no sympathy towards Alberta. It was as if they believed that Alberta deserved what it got from Ottawa.

I doubt that attitude has changed since then.

      1. BA

I grew up in the lower MAOLand during the 50-60’s.. Alberta was always regarded as a lessor place – sorta like the “occupational class” in high school attitude..ya know.? (best thing I ever did was move here in ’76)

As for kicking us out.? There is no question that many Canadians leaning slightly left see Albertans as a bunch of whiny somehat “lessor” bastards… I see it all the time.

        Botom line is:
Things will NEVER EVER Change regardless of who sits in the PM’s chair….They inevitably MUST Bend the knee to the Criminal Power cabal centered in/around Quebec. As it ever was.

        Why should we stay..??
There is ZERO REASON to remain a vassal state in this beyond messed up Country. Besides the Oil/Gas issue…we all are being financially boned up the (_i_) by: Dairy Marketing, Closed Skies, Digital Communications & Public Service Unions to to name but a few. (All “Monopolies” held/controlled by Eastern Elites)

        I want out….not in 5 or 10.
(…as soon as we are prepared as per Joe Below me)

        1. I grew up in the Peace Country of B. C. and Lotusland tended to view us as a bunch of backward hicks. We were good enough, though, to provide it with its oil and gas as well as its electricity from the Bennett Dam and woe betide us if the flow of any of those commodities was ever interrupted.

Later, while I was at UBC, most of the Lotuslanders saw me as a backwoods hillbilly who had just fallen off the back of the turnip truck while they were the bastions of civilization and enlightenment. They never considered me to be a fellow citizen of what used to be Canada, nor did they ever intend to bestow that title upon me. To them, if I didn’t conform to their warped way of thinking and living, I wasn’t allowed to be seen as equal.

  2. Time for Alberta to separate. First steps:

    A) set up an Alberta pension plan

    B) set up Alberta provincial police force and get the RCMP out.

    C) Alberta to start collecting its income tax directly. Just like Quebec.

    D) Alberta to hold a referendum on equalization. With the question being “Are you in favour of Albertans contributing $20 billion a year to other provinces, principally Quebec.”

All these ratchet up the pressure on Ottawa. And, more importantly start to prepare the Alberta population for a separation vote.

    1. The first step should be that Alberta, even as a province, declares private ownership of property as a fundamental human right, to be defended by both free speech and personal physical force.

The second step is that everyone, regardless of SJW status, has exactly the same rights to their own private property.
This alone will drive liberals into a uncontrolled frenzy.

This can be done as a province, then you fight it out in our flawed court system, then when Alberta’s loses, declare UDI and do it anyways (either when courts decide or after a predeclared time limit for them to decide).

    2. OH WHAT A GREAT PLAN! REPLACE EVERY NANNY STATE PROGRAM RUN BY CANADA, WITH AN ALBERTA RUN NANNY STATE PROGRAM!!!!!!!! PURE GENIUS!!!!!

Because, it’s different this time, and Joe will run the state correctly.

How about, if you want to retire, you take care of yourself.
If you want to be taken care of in your old age, have children, and tell them it is their responsibility.
If you want to own a house, save money till you can.

Joe has demonstrated the logical fallacy of “BIG GOVERNMENT IS PERFECT, BUT ONLY WHEN MY GUYS ARE IN CHARGE”.

Notice how Joe has not suggested cutting anything, not suggested a smaller, limited government, in any way.

      1. Kevin

Read carefully. See the words “First steps”? Good.

Having Alberta separate cuts $20 billion from federal revenues that the Feds cannot give to provinces. Thus the provinces have to cut their spending, raise their taxes, or they can borrow. I leave that choice to you. If Alberta separates I would not presume to tell Quebec what they should cut, or Ontario, NS, etc.

And if Alberta were to separate I don’t think having Canada collect our income tax, administer our pension plan, or provide our police force would be a good idea.

From your comment “if you want to retire, you take care of yourself”, I infer, perhaps incorrectly, that you would cut the Canada Pension?

Big government? The biggest cut for Albertans is to eliminate equalization.

Since the rest of Canada, which elected the Liberals, doesn’t want to let Alberta produce more of Alberta’s resources, I no longer wish to “share” my taxes with Canada. It’s time to separate.

Funny both Ontario and Quebec have provincial police forces. Didn’t see you recommending their replacement by the RCMP? Or do you believe Alberta must remain a colony of central Canada?

    3. Agreed – and I would like Saskatchewan to follow ASAP. My sister has suggested that we all spoil our ballots (Scheer the Steer is my MP and I cannot vote for him again) just to let the powers that be know we are not in agreement with their agenda.

    4. joe

I agree with your 4 points. What I do not see is any appetite for separation in AB.

Nobody I hang with talks about it. They grouse away about Ottawa like they always have but never talk of separating. I live rural route where you’d think separation would be a topic but isn’t. I’m thinking the cities with all their new Albertans have even less interest.

In the recent election the separatists had zero traction. And one more point, I have not heard the term UDI used anywhere except at SDA.

      1. abtrapper, I think you are right about the general feeling in Alberta for separation. However, I meet many people who are starting to entertain the idea. That might just be the people in my circles, but five years ago none of them would give separation a second thought.

I don’t think UDI will work unless there is a clear yes vote to separate. I made the four suggestions as a way to start preparing a path to a yes vote. Essentially Alberta starts bevaving like a separate country and people become more comfortable with the idea.

Now Turdeau, Singh, and May along with Quebec, and possibly NS, NB, and PEI are not going to agree to end equalization, and may not agree to amend the formula. That helps the Alberta separation cause. Imagine an ad campaign with the slogan “We don’t want your oil, but keep sending the money,”. and “oh we are going to increase the carbon tax” (if anyone believes the liberals will keep returning the carbon taxes as rebates, I have a bridge you can buy).

The separation journey is five to ten years.

        1. joe

You make a good point. A re elected bongo government might tip the scales.

I don’t see any current politico leading a separation movement. It would take some charismatic outsider to inspire the masses.

A more likely scenario is a re negotiated transfer system. This will only happen if Kenney allows a vote on the matter but there is still no reason to think the libranos will act on the results of the vote – especially if they have no seats in the Province.

      2. I find the sentiment is just below the surface but, like many controversial subjects, most people are too polite to express their true feelings. It doesn’t take much encouragement to get their actual opinions if you appear non judgmental or pro-separation.

The missing ingredient, in my opinion, is a popular leader pushing it within Saskatchewan and Alberta. Since politicians are notorious for running to get in front of the already marching parade, I expect it’s just a matter of time before that popular leader appears.

The prospect of being the leader of a country, one rich in resources and wealth, will be very tempting for some ambitious politician(s).

    5. To Joe @ 433

If only there had been an Alberta political party advocating for such, one that understood the CPC had sold Alberta out. One that understood the past and what leverage would be needed once the CPC seat warmers had been replaced with the real governing party. If only.

      1. Alberta Independence Party got something like 13,000 votes. Or 0.7% of the total.

But remember the first job was to get rid of Notley.

Thankfully there was very little vote splitting this time, unlike 2015

  3. https://clearseas.org/en/tankers/
Click on and scroll down just a bit and you’ll see the hypocrisy of the post-nation Canada.
On the pacific coast 37 million tonnes (MT) of US traffic in Canadian waters and 6MT of Canadian. Out east: 24MT through the Great Lakes and St Lawrence Seaway and another 67MT through the Estuary and Gulf of St Lawrence.
This shows that the Senate is made up of a majority of Corrupt Liberal scumbags.
Albertans are being impoverished by K-Bec and Ottawa.
Put this graph on paper and show it to some BC big mouth then make them eat it.
    #CanadaDecline

    1. Consider the long term impact of a financially strong Alberta. Strong finances = political influence. That threatens Ottawa but also threatens Quebec’s preferred status. At some point Western Canadians have to realize how they are being raped for the benefit of eastern Canada. It has been this way since the first fur was moved east.

It is a constant in Canadian politics that Westerners whine about their status in Confederation. When does the whining end and action begin? There will never be a better ticket to equality in this union and it is being frittered away. Sad.

    2. Harper could of filled the Senate with a boat load of conservatives but he left the positions open so Justin Trudeau filled them and people wonder why conservatives are flocking towards the PPC.

You reap what Harper didn’t sow.

      LibCons have had their chances.

They failed miserably over and over

      It’s Time for real change.

      1. “and people wonder why conservatives are flocking towards the PPC.”

In your fevered imagination. In reality, most people have never even heard of the PPC or Bernier.
The PPC is going to siphon 2-5% of the vote off of the CPC. All people know is that they hate Zoolander.

        1. Hogwash

All of you who support Scheer and his bunch of Cons who have moved the CPC center left centred right on top of Liberal platform they are both like the single same corrupt party and that is who the LibCons really are.

But no you can’t defend the Center left CPC Platforms anymore since they are no longer Conservative Platforms it’s the PPC that has all the right conservative platforms that conservative minded people have always dreamed about and you doubt that the conservative minded people won’t move their vote to the PPC while marking an X on their ballots.

Canadians are yearning for a sensible and moral change and away from the joke that our Federal Governments have been over the last decades.

Justin Trudeau won the last election on who he is, his name, his hair and good looks.

Justurd has shown all of us who he really is.

The Liberals have bludgeoned themselves and so has the CPC with scaredy-cat Scheer moving the CPC left of center.

Mark my words there will be a sea of PPC yard signs from coast to coast to coast.

          1. “Mark my words there will be a sea of PPC yard signs from coast to coast to coast.”

Since you’re just a troll that has showed up in the last handful of months and will vanish back under your rock
in the Gatineau, I won’t make the effort to ‘mark your words’ dumbass.

          2. You proved my point

You can’t defend the Center Left Platforms of the CPC

All you have is insults and presume I am from Quebec.

I am a Albertan who works for a pipeline company.

          3. “You proved my point . You can’t defend the Center Left Platforms of the CPC”

Screw your point and your pointy head. I have no interest in defending the CPC.
However, they are the only chance we have of getting rid of Zoolander. As I said before, Quebec is a whore province, in every way. They have NEVER been a bastion of Conservatism and never will be. Bloc Quebecois?! Yeah sure.
Albertans don’t want a Froggie who speaks Chretienese Engrish for PM and they don’t want a Quebec based party.

Most voters are LIVs and don’t even know Bernier and his stupid People’s party exist.
The CPC doesn’t have to be great. They only have to be better than the Liberals, and they are. Enough.

          4. Fildebrant thought he’d get a lot of support too.

But we shall see how much support Max get this October.

However, I think Justin will delay the election call until his supporters and labour unions get as many negative ads in as possible. I think Justin will want the third party attack conservative ads to run in September, after people are back from holidays.

  4. Man, the crap just keeps flowing. When sex and perverts are required to be mentioned in a bill in parliament you know that the country has been officially flushed.

  5. As polls have shown, the majority of people in Alberta and Saskatchewan understand that they get so little in return for their contributions to Canada that there’s no reason to stay in confederation. Benign neglect was tolerable, malicious interference is not.

What reasons are there to stay? I’ve yet to hear any offered from the rest of Canada. As separate countries, both are free to pursue their own paths. PrairieWest- a responsible producer of energy. Canada- a climate change champion.

    It’s time.

    1. I suggest “the Libertarian Republic of ” .. Galt? Buffalo? Rupertsland? Dumont? Albertchewan?

You have to start with the purpose of a constitution: IT IS TO PROTECT PEOPLE FROM THEIR OWN GOVERNMENT.
It is not to protect government from it’s citizens; any attempt to slide this in, such as “police and judges cannot be sued for wrongful conviction”, needs to be resisted.

“I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments by those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.” ~ James Madison

In the end, freedom is maintained not by personal side arms, but by eternal vigilance. This is where government run education did us in. In schools, people are taught that basically, to join government, is to join a priesthood. An untouchable caste whose decisions can never be questioned. A class of people who can do no wrong.

Our faith has been based on the wisdom of men; WE WERE WRONG.

      1. Kevin. For over 40 yrs since I got laid off in 1980 thanks to Pierre, I’ve advocated for a free-independant Alberta. There is no hope for salvation within the Canadian parliamentaty system. One designed by Eastern Elites for Eastern Elites – FUCK THAT.

We need a constitution “for the people” not dissimilar to what the US has. Theirs being one we could easily model our own to.

Replete with 1st – 2nd amendments and any others we like.
Replete with an IRON Clad garantee of Property rights and the Inalienable RIGHT to defend said property/persons thereon as we SEE fit. Nothing Less will do.

But as per Joe and he’s correct in his statements, we must prepare for UDI.

  6. And notice, how no Conservative Party of Canada member has put forward a bill to prohibit jet fuel burning travel. If we are in a climate emergency, why don’t they act like it? McKenna gets to walk to Vancouver, to demonstrate just how bad the climate emergency is.

It’s because they never represented anything you thought they did.

    1. This would be hilarious to put the Libs in the position of advocating for some of the worst CO2 offenders…jets. Or how about introducing a huge carbon tax on all air travel…50% seems like a good starting point.

  7. First thing for Alberta to do is start getting rid of the commies. Slash government programs and workforce. Cut all arts funding. Conservative education curriculum.

Basically bring back personal responsibility as much as possible. Libs hate that and will hopefully flee to safe havens like Quebec, Cuba and Venezuela. 😉

    1. I see Jason just Froze Provincial Public Service Contracts and will not ngotiate.

As far as I’m concerned…that’s NOWHERE good enough.
15% CUT in WAGES, BENEFITS & numbers. I want to see a ZERO DEBT in 4 years.

And I have written him to state that is eactly what he MUST do. Never mind the fucking union. Should be De-Certifying those Subversive Communist trough feeding, anti Semtic parasitic orgs en masse.

      1. Yeah, it is becoming increasingly apparent that Kenney and Moe don’t actually want to fight, isn’t it. It is also clear they recognize the importance of APPEARING to be fighting.

Talk about closing pipes to BC; but never actually do it.

Talk about separation, but never actually hold a referendum.

Talk about equalization, but never force the issue …

        1. Hopefully they’re just waiting until after the federal election, out of consideration for Scheer. After the election there’s no excuse for not proceeding with removing CPP from Ottawa, possibly even EI. Saskatchewan already has a start on a policing infrastructure with the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol and city police. Canada actually doesn’t provide many other services directly to Alberta and Saskatchewan citizens since provinces deliver the lion’s share. Income supports like pensions child benefit, gst rebates aren’t difficult to take over once federal income tax remains in the new country.

Learn from Brexit and don’t draw out negotiations over an extended period of time. UDI may be the best way to go. Declare independence, immediate separation, then negotiate with both Canada and the US.

  8. Where are Scheer and Kenney? Why the silence? Can a conservative government trash these bills if elected? There is also the other bill (88?) about stopping offshore oil in the arctic. Why are we letting these pigs destroy our energy economy?

    1. ” Can a conservative government trash these bills if elected?”

Premiers have the power of the Notwithstanding Clause. Any bill coming out of Ottawa that affects provincial jurisdiction
can be SET ASIDE immediately and permanently if only the Premier has the will to do so.

      1. I thought the not withstanding clause only applies to the Charter of rights and freedoms. Perhaps I’m wrong?

  9. Periodically on his show, John Batchelor discusses with frequent guest Michael Vlahos whether the U. S. is currently in another civil war. They often refer back to American history and the events leading up to the bombardment of Fort Sumter. One point that’s emphasized is that the people often don’t realize or understand that they actually are in a civil war until it’s well underway.

Considering what’s happened since Prinz Dummkopf took office, and comparing it with that happened south of the border more than 150 years ago, it’s hard not to see that Canada is slowly sliding into one. Ottawa for the last 50 years, has been overtly hostile towards Alberta and this latest move, which we may as well call a siege, certainly fits in with similar such events in the U. S., even before Lincoln was first elected.

    It’s going to get messier.

    1. I agree that the US is in for a very messy future. As we are also.
In fact, about 10 yrs ago or so, I wrote on this blog that the if the US was not careful in what they were doing, they were in danger of going from a first world country straight into a third world country without going thru the second stage at all.
I don’t see any winners in their present situation, because even if the Democrats win the next election, if they thought they were obnoxious in opposition, the Republicans will make them look like kindergarten schoolers.
Personally, I very much admire the US because they were the first country in the world to use the phrase ‘to make money’ (as Ayn Rand pointed out) and the consequent freedom it gave to everyone no matter what color, ethnic or other divisive back grounds people have created in todays world. You work hard, you win.

  10. This Trudeau hates Alberta as his dad did in his time in office. I moved from Ontario to Alberta and was amazed at all the empty and boarded up houses that people left behind to go to job else where. I love Alberta and the people even though I have moved onto another province. We need to vote out the liberal gov’t in 2019…vote out Trudeau he is dividing Canadians NOT uniting Canadians. Let Quebec separate it will solve a lot problems as they do hate us Canadians! UNITE the rest Canada as one country with Canadian values.

  11. Have you all noticed that there is not vitality left in Canada. Look around – restaurants, bars, hotels, golf courses and resorts are all empty. Nobody feels secure. Nobody wants to spend any money. Canada really sucks lately. There is no joy anymore.
