This mosque shooter has quite a travel log and in nine tenths of his manifesto sounds more like a deranged leftist eco-freak than any kind of conservative. But even if he had a less colorful background and appeared to be a typical conservative voter, his actions were deranged and in some ways the opposite of conservative values. What we should stand for, sometimes it gets lost in various jingoistic waves of rah-rah, is due process, and the freedoms and concurrent responsibilities of the individual in a free society. Some Muslims are guilty of atrocities and crimes. They should be tracked down and punished. But all Muslims, just like all Jews, all black people, all white people, all of any description, are not communally responsible. There were specific parties who committed terrorist acts and others who supported them. Now it may be true that a vague support spreads out far and wide in a community. That is not a good thing and it should be called out. But these vague statements of support that come up in many contexts for many violent actions do not rise to the level of shared guilt. A lot of it is loose talk. It happens in all kinds of settings.
Nobody has the right to go out and start annihilating people who resemble known perps. Let’s say an accountant with a round face and glasses is suspected of murdering some kids. The Christchurch massacre was on the level of somebody who then went out and started to kill accountants at random, or round faced people, or people with glasses.
