  1. To paraphrase Nick DiPaolo from earlier this week, Tesla’s made a real “race” car.

    1. “recognition technology used in self-driving cars has a harder time recognizing humans the darker their skin is.”

      So … what’s the problem?

  2. Heh. So Tech be rasicts? Works for me! I look forward to the protests at Tesla and every other “self-driving” car maker…

  3. We’ve heard of this before. Facial recognition software thinks all Chinese people are the same person.

  4. So then, self driving cars are a bit like an abortion … disproportionately killing black folk.

  5. LOL…Had Jussie Smollett been on the ball he could have claimed he was the victim of a hit and run by a drunk, passed out white guy behind the wheel of a Tesla, and that he had a Trump 2020 bumper sticker on his car!

  6. The manufacturers are using the wrong technology then. Since 2007 Mercedes has had Night Vision Assist available as an option on the S-class. It uses two near-infrared emitters in the headlight assemblies and an Infrared & visible light sensor to produce a black and white image on the instrument display. The newest version puts a flashing red box on the screen overlaying the pedestrian to alert the driver and coupled with adaptive headlights flashes an LED beam on the pedestrian or animal in front of the car. It’s a $2,000 option and the technology is from a Swedish firm that also supplies it to BMW and Audi.

  7. Okay then, I will take my future self driving car in, wait for it, WHITE……..

On the other hand, I thought that if you DON’T see other peoples colour, you were NOT a racist?

    Now I am confused……

  8. The problem would be solved if they only taught the self driving cars how to fly.

  9. Waymo (Google self driving car company) cars in action. Enjoy.

If anyone is interested, the book “Autonomy – The quest to build the driverless car and how it will reshape our world” by Burns and Shulgan is a very interesting read. Even if, like me, you have no intention of riding in one.

  10. Not a surprise given a thread late last year with a study that concluded self-driving cars had a hard time “seeing” black cars.
