I searched for it and read the whole thing too. The reasoning in the article is pretty good for the most part but most conservatives already know all that. However his advice at the end needs closer scrutiny: Close the border. Increase foreign aid. Help refugees in their own land. Help Americans who need it. They are just as deserving as refugees. Fix our own wagon first. Then save the world. If we can. The end.
1. Close the border. Right, no one ever thought of that before. This is easier said than done. Almost all the media and academia and many politicians will oppose and impede it any way they can. Is Trump astute and canny enough to pull it off? We’ll see.
2. Increase foreign aid. The US has a national debt of over $21 trillion (21,000,000,000,000.00) and it is growing by about $1 trillion per year. A trillion here, a trillion there, pretty soon you’re talking real money. I don’t understand all the implications of deficit financing and I wonder if anyone does but surely there are consequences. Generosity is a good thing but not on borrowed money, some of which the US owes to its biggest rival, China, not known for their generosity.
3. Fix our own wagon first. How are they going to do that? They are at each others’ throats big league. As Lincoln quoted from the Bible, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” This is true.
4. Then save the world. If we can. They can’t. Even as hyperbole this is absurd.
Maybe I’m wrong and there will be peace and prosperity in our time. We should pray and work for these things but in the end things will fall apart. I probably sound like a pessimist but I’m not. I think I’m a realist. Our only hope is in the return of Jesus Christ. Before that final day we will have “wars and rumours of wars”, famines and many other troubles. Donald Trump, or whoever replaces him, or some Chinese dictator or whichever potentate ends up dominating the world – none of these men will ever have any lasting solutions to the world’s dilemmas.
