Stone tools found in the Philippines predate the arrival of modern humans to the islands by roughly 600,000 years—but researchers aren’t sure who made them.

 

The eye-popping artifacts, unveiled on Wednesday in Nature, were abandoned on a river floodplain on the island of Luzon beside the butchered carcass of a rhinoceros. The ancient toolmakers were clearly angling for a meal. Two of the rhino’s limb bones are smashed in, as if someone was trying to harvest and eat the marrow inside. Cut marks left behind by stone blades crisscross the rhino’s ribs and ankle, a clear sign that someone used tools to strip the carcass of meat.

 

But the age of the remains makes them especially remarkable: The carved bones are most likely between 631,000 and 777,000 years old, with researchers’ best estimate coming in around 709,000 years old. The research—partially funded by the National Geographic Society—pushes back occupation of the Philippines to before the known origin of our species, Homo sapiens.

But that’s not all.

  …it’s an open question how these hominins crossed open ocean.

    1. I take the ‘hangeth the earth’ bit as a clear albeit ‘coy’ perhaps reference to the fact the earth orbits in space, untethered except by gravity, that curious warping of said space.
      for fun I like to ask people how they think gravity works. ‘planets exert grab it eh’ on each t’other’.
      mmmmm, yes, but how precisely does that work? what is exerting enormous pull to make the earth turn in a circle around the sun? WHAT is the sun ‘doing’ to make dat ‘appen?’

  2. As I have said numerous times to my kids…every “fact” you learn about the history of mankind is just a guess waiting for evidence to prove it wrong.

    1. I’d say it’s worse than that. Most “facts” of evolution are known lies planted by Jesuits. Those they indoctrinate then struggle to make reality fit with their fiction.

I don’t believe in the “out of Africa” theory either … BUT … the theory acknowledges there have been previous exits from Africa prior to that of modern humans, which (according to the theory) left Africa 60,000 thousand years ago and represent all modern humans. Finding 700,000 year old remains doesn’t really challenge that theory.

      Of greater interest is a series of skeletons found in Africa dating back 1.9 million years in which the remains of several individuals appear to have been arranged in a burial-like setting. If human ancestors were burying their dead 2 million years ago then all the theories of human evolution are out the window.

    We are witnessing a small example of that on the big island in Hawaii right now.

      If you want to attack their scientific methods I suggest going to the core of what they did and checking their methods and math. Otherwise you just make yourself look foolish. Perhaps then you will realize it is your preconceived notions that are flawed.

I have studied and watched countless scientists that are just as qualified as any other scientists give their evidence of creation and they are right in my opinion of course. Just as your opinion is evolution is right. Evolution was thought up and has been championed by god haters that NEED to “prove” creation wrong which in turn (to them anyways) “proves” the biblical foundation of everything we are is wrong.           Electricity is not in the Bible. People invented it, and now you use it to surf the Internet. Something else that was not in the Bible that you’re using to surf the Internet was Boolean Algebra. It was invented by George Boole, first published in 1847, and forms the mathematical basis of electronic digital computers. It didn’t exist before old George thought it up and wrote it down. Now it runs your PC.

          Evolution of species is a -theory- which is useful to the extent it predicts things we can observe. Lots of parts of the original Darwinian theory have been disproven over the years, other parts have not yet been disproven. Not bad for a theory Charles Darwin cooked up at about the same time George Boole was thinking about logic gates.

          Because that’s the thing about theories. They stand until someone DIS-proves them. That’s how science works. Generally you can’t prove a thing to be true, you can only find evidence that proves it is -not- true. So far, despite all the efforts of everyone working on it since 1859, nobody has shown evolution to be not true. Just like no one has managed to disprove Boole’s logic theory.

          So you can rant on about Lefties and demons if you like, but it just makes you look like a moron who dropped out of high school before they covered how science works. The only real Leftie on SDA regularly is UnMe, and it isn’t even posting today.

          What’s interesting about today’s posting is that if the carbon dating is correct, human-like creatures made it to the Philippines a lot earlier than they should have, and since it is an island they must have had boats. Or, they came up with tool use on their own, which is a pretty radical idea as well. As discoveries go, this one disproved a lot of theories.

            What makes you think I’m a non-believer? The existence of a biological evolutionary process does not disprove God or the Bible, and in fact has nothing to do with either. Just as the existence of electricity or logic gates does not disprove God, and has nothing to do with the Bible.

            Unless you mean that everyone who disagrees with you in even the smallest detail is anathema and destined for Hell. Then I’ll have to suggest you consider another group who thinks the same thing. They’ve been getting pretty uppity lately with the stoning, van-ramming and head chopping of unbelievers. Its not a good look.

        3. Evolution is proven well beyond a shadow of a doubt. There is no evidence of creation, none of the arguments are testable and do not stand well against the fossil record. The bible is a collection of stories that cannot be tested if they’re true or not. In a logical sense, if something cannot be tested there is no point in exploring it. If you want to explore something logically, there is no room for faith.

          Just a quick glance at the incredibly massive fossil record disproves the young earth idea.

    EVERY time a species ‘branches off’ in the evolutionary tree, it LOSES the capability to become anything on a DIFFERENT branch.

    so lets just keep going back, back, back to when there was no life, but just the chemical compounds of life, made of protons and electrons. soooooo, is THAT where the great diversity and potential was hiding out?

    so allow me to rephrase the Q: WHERE is this great capacity of ‘life’ to ‘respond to the environment’ (made of OTHER protons) residing? where is it? according to evolution, it has to be somewhere in the protons and electrons.

    which is it? the simple becoming complex aka ‘evolution’, or the complex (according to evolution, the earlier a ‘packed with potential’ species showed up, the more subsequent LESS CAPABLE species it sired) becoming simple which is what we see?
    oh. you disagree life is becoming simpler? Im measuring and discussing what the POTENTIAL is with each species in the tree of life. whatever branch it came down, it has NEVER to my knowledge been asserted by even the most ardent evolutionist that a species has EVER, ‘unevolved’, ie become what it used-to-be, and then head down a different branch.

    so here it is again, EVERY time a species evolves, it LOSES the capability of becoming a species that branched off elsewhere previously.
    iow, where in blazes did the diversity of life come from, where was it held in those organic compounds from space or whatever is the present favorite explanation? hmmmm?
