Prostitutes Incensed with Harry Reid

Nevada prostitutes think Harry Reid is a very, very naughty boy. He has suddenly, and unexpectedly decided that prostitution, which has been legal in assorted parts of Nevada since the 1970’s, should now be outlawed. At the time of this writing there is no word whether any Nevada prostitutes aim on personally disciplining Senator Reid.

  1. If it’s safe, taxed, and the women aren’t being abused, yes, it’s a Conservative position to butt out & let them do what they want.

  2. I wondered if anybody else thought it funny that Democrat Harry Reid is suddenly all Moses throwing his stone tablets at the hookers in Nevada.
Amazing the difference one little election makes.

  3. Adune, that’s a Libertarian position. A Conservative position is women can do what they want and its both futile and stupid to try and dictate how they are going to live.
But a brothel, that is living off the avails of prostitution and is inherently -evil-.
Not a position I’d expect Harry Reid to support, what with him being a scumbag and all.

  4. Rather ironic in that Harry Reid (et. al.) has prostituted himself, the United States Senate and the Democratic Party infinitely more than have those women legally active in a legal occupation.
Unlike We the People with Dingy Harry & the Dem. Gang, at least the prostitutes’ customers want to be f*cked.
Dingy Harry & the Dem. Gang political prostitution has hurt Nevada and America as a whole infinitely more than those Nevada call girls have done.

  5. Pigs will fly before Harry gets his way. Nevada has enough problems attracting a ever shrinking audience with disposible money. They sure dont need a hit on their 2nd biggest attractions.

  6. Conservatives are obviously not all lumped into religious fundamentalism as the left would like to portray. Every bit as much as today’s “Liberalism” has anything at all to do with real Liberal values.
Today’s “Liberal’s/ Progressives” are a potpourri of Fascist socialists, communists, anarchists and an endless supply of self indulgent special interests of all stripes looking for a handout with control of your money, your voice and your obedience.
Everything about the left is “truth-speak”, what’s down is up and what’s up is down. They will find the anarchy and crisis they believe will destabilize the west to be the ultimate tool of their own destruction eventually. Lunacy and madness will not sustain forever.

  7. I guess as a Democrat, he’s just jealous of other people who are good at screwing people for money.

  8. So the beagle is now the official clap-happy Nevada welcomer! Yay!

  12. Harry swings social conservative im guessing to court the Mormon vote (was there a secret quid pro quo for support last November?). Meanwhile Obama has unilaterally decided not to enforce DOMA. (definition of marriage act). Now that’s juxtaposition.

Here is another way to frame it.

  16. Quarter Canadian has it right, its deflection.
The issue of the day is the economy and Harry Reid is a U.S. Senator.
What is and isn’t legal in the State of Nevada is none of his concern.

  17. From what I can gather from the movies “Very Bad Things” who can afford Vegas Professional Va-jay-jay anyways?
Seriously though, I’ve always questioned the ‘class’ of those that would have such a destructive state motto. Seriously, Vegas’ unabashed revelry in the pain and suffering it causes the families of those that it attracts with its prostitution industry is disgusting. Sick people in Vegas if you ask me.

  18. @Phantom – How exactly is living off the avails of prostitution any different from living of the avails of roofing, or running a restaurant? If you are against prostitution I can accept that but if it’s not a moral position I am confused as to how brothels are worse than other alternatives. If the employees are not abused, and choose to work there, I don’t see the evil. In fact, I would think a brothel offers an inherent safety factor that independent escorts may lack.

  19. Once Harry closes the brothels, there’ll be no more prostitution in Nevada. I mean, really, how many well off old guys go to Vegas to get laid anyway?

  20. Harry didnt say he wanted to do away with prostitution,he wants to do away with LEGAL prostitution.Maybe his biggest donors dont like the competition.

  21. “In fact, I would think a brothel offers an inherent safety factor that independent escorts may lack.”
I agree with you completely, Rat. How many women has the common bawdy house law caused to be killed or injured over the years by forcing them to pursue their business on the street, leaving them potential victims for mass murderers like Robert Pickton?

  22. “How exactly is living off the avails of prostitution any different from living of the avails of roofing, or running a restaurant?”
Primarily the difference is that roofing and cooking do not degrade and destroy the people who do it. The same cannot be said of prostitution. The practice of prostitution corrodes the mind and the body, allows all manner of STDs to spread and drives most prostitutes into drug abuse and mental illness. If drugs and mental illness isn’t what got them started anyway.
Prostitution is an evil on the personal level, historically it has been shown to be an evil at the social level. Disease and madness are not things you want to encourage in your city, if nothing else. Then there is the damage to families of both the sellers and the buyers, which proponents of prostitution tend not to want to talk about very much.
So, as a Conservative I see many reasons to discourage prostitution from personal morality, public health, and the greater morality of society.
As a practical matter it is utterly impossible to prevent people from selling sex for money or favors. It always happens, throughout history it is a constant, and throughout history it is frowned upon. I wouldn’t want it to happen to any kid. Its a tragedy, not a career.
Now, although it is impossible to stop at the individual level it is a simple matter to prevent at the store-front level. Houses of prostitution are places of despair and everybody knows it. Worse, the bordello owner profits from the despair of the women “working” there. Taking profit out of the equation reduces the over-all problem of prostitution in a society and improves people’s lives on the whole.
All of the above has nothing whatsoever to do with why Harry Reid is talking about it. He’s trying to save his very own personal @$$, and looks a right buffoon doing it.

  23. Rat, I used to as well. But the older I get the more people I meet, and you know, ex-hookers and ex-strippers just don’t turn out well for the most part. Those would be the ones that actually survive long enough to get too old for it.
That’s what makes me say its a tragedy not a career. There are some things we just shouldn’t allow to stand, and that is one of them. Prohibition doesn’t work, but just ignoring it doesn’t work either.
Make it uncool and unpleasant so nobody wants to do it for the pitiful amount of money they get. That’s my prescription.

  24. I might agree, Phantom, and it’s not that I don’t agree that stripping and prostitution lead to unhappy endings, but there are so many liberals out there that know what choices are right for me and have no problem legislating it. They tell me what guns I can own, what car I can drive, what helmet I have to wear, what insurance I have to buy, what pension plan I have to contribute to, what arts program I should support, and so on. Telling people what to do, forcing them to make “good” choices, usually ends badly, too.
On prostitution, I am dead set against any form of coercion, and I am supportive of regulations regarding addicts and health (I’m not completely libertarian), but I am not sure I want the government to be regulating choices because they might end badly in the long run.

  25. I’m with you on those cleverer than I making my decisions for me. Our government does too much of it, and obviously in all the wrong places.
There are very few things government does well. I agree with you they should do -nothing- rather than what they do now, which is provide the misery pimps need to stay in business. Eg. needle exchanges. Nice concept, keep ’em alive ling enough to turn a few more tricks before the inevitable blood infection and pneumonia takes ’em.
I’m not advocating the ham-fisted regulation of choices, that’s prohibition and its a cure worse than the disease. I’m saying there’s no reason to tolerate brothels as a legitimate business. Leave the hookers alone, but get on the pimps like ugly on Nancy Pelosi.

  26. Phantom, forgive my question, but how many people who have hooked or stripped legally have you met? The old assumption is that only girls with some kind of illness will willingly get into this life in the first place, but would that be still the case if brothels were legal everywhere? If the stigma weren’t attached to those career choices, how many girls would willingly do it, knowing that a couple shifts a week could easily give a girl a boost in disposable income?
I would be with Rat on the “not quite completely Libertarian” thing, although I would be scared to see a self-regulated industry unless the brothel owners themselves are shut out of the regulation-making process.

  27. “…but would that be still the case if brothels were legal everywhere?”
What does history tell us? You know the root of the word “fornication”? It comes from Rome, where the hookers used to hang out under the “fornix”, which is the arch of the aqueduct.
