71 Replies to “BC’s New Premier to be Decided”

  1. Christy Clark is the reported front runner. She is the only one of the four who is not currently a sitting MLA. While the BC Liberal party is a coalition of Liberals and Conservatives, Clark is a very left liberal. She has promised a new statuatory holiday and is the Teachers Federation’s favourite. She is a true Liberal in that she stands for nothing except gaining power.
If she wins, we will have two socialist parties vying for control of the purse strings. We in BC will then be royally screwed.

  2. How very democratic. Insider apparatchiks in a closed “members only” club decide behind closed doors who gets to lord over the subjects.
A question for all Canadians. When was the last time you saw a candidate for Premier, or Prime Minister appear on a ballot where the plebes get to vote?

  3. It should be remembered too, that she (Christy) worked for CKNW and was highly recommended by the ineffably bubble-headed Bill Good and some others at the station. Instead, they should have been digging in and finding out about the B.C. Rail scam that has cost the taxpayers of B.C. untold millions.

  4. KPD
Alberta in 2006. A five buck PC membership entitled one to vote in the race to replace Ralph.
The lefties, fearing Ted Morton, flocked to buy them and we ended up with Red Ed.
Incidentally, Stephane Dionne won the leadership of the LPC the very same day. So, from a conservative perspective, the day was a wash.

Ms. Christy’s future isn’t THAT clearcut.
    (Thank goodness)
And, of course, once we get through this particular dogfight, we can look forward the the NDP’s version, which can only prove to be just as much of a barnburner.

  6. don’t matter nothing kiddies . . . as long as they can keep the socialist horde NDP & their puppet masters at the BC Fed from getting back in power.
The NDP in BC = We are Sooooooooooooo Fek’d.
And yes, Christy is a hard core lefty Liberal up to her eyeballs in some real socialist stupidity . . . and she’s a real sucker for crap heads like Tides Canada and all their imported American money and influence.
She’s a big ban the oil pipeline to Kitimat supporter and would push Dulton level of Stupid Green Money Squandering crap.

  7. KPD, It’s called a parliamentary system, one where the party members have always chosen their leaders. Anyone can join the parties and participate in the vote. It does however take a little more effort than turning on your computer.
This is BC, where all political turf to the right of big government populism (BC’s 334.4 conservatives) is the sole territory of the Libertarian Party with 15.5 members. BC Liberals are essentially happy-faced NPDers, nominally more friendly to business and extremely generous to FNs and public sector unions with your tax dollars.

  8. Paid my $10 and joined the BCLP 3 weeks ago. Got my PIN in the mail Tuesday. Voted this morning, no problems. Well, except if you consider not liking any of the candidates a problem.
Voted Falcon as choice #1 and De Jong choice #2. It’s a preferential vote and you have to designate at least two choices — if not for that I wouldn’t have voted for more than one because I actually don’t like “Open” Mike De Jong at all. If I had selected them 1-2-3-4 in order of preference it would have been 1 Falcon 2 de Jong 3 Abbott and 4 Clark.
How so? Christy is the worst because she’s a core federal Liberal, too far left, caught up in BC Rail corruption, phony, unaccomplished, dishonest and I could go on but you get the picture. Abbott is Christy without the backroom machinations and corruption, but with the political correctness and nanny state mindset — think Dalton McGuinty. Mike De Jong is more sensible politically but is all messed up in the BC Rail tarpit, is equally messed up with mass East Indian membership signups, and never stood up to Gordo. Falcon is the only thing resembling a conservative, but will forever carry the stain of being a Gordo yes-man. Curb my enthusiasm.
Now, if Christy gets in, which I actually suspect is not going to happen in spite of the best efforts of our sleazy media, the party will split. Would that be good or bad? Tough call, but it might actually be good. The NDP is enough of a train wreck to pull defeat from the jaws of victory even with a split opposition. We’ll see.

  9. kevin falcon is a fellow alumnus of yours truly’s primate school …we learned the latin…we learned to fear the Lord…we were taught that physical violence is at times necessary and a societal good….because true Evil stalks the land…always has always will…
    also i was best man at gordoo’s sister’s wedding …way back….
    i’m connected i reckon…
what else…i dunno that’s all i got….but remember if even if willie pickton won the leadership we’d HAVE to vote for him…

  10. BC politics is like left, lefter and leftist…
One Hour Falconizing for me, which is better than One Hour “Martinizing” at the federal level. Laundering your money efficiently!
The BC Rail stench is still odious…but then the Glen Clark Pacificats and Bingogate doens’t bring back particulary warm memories.
What was all that stuff about “cleaning up corruption and cronyism come hell or highwater”…
Yep, HELL OR HIGHWATER a family specialty!!

  11. “.but remember if even if willie pickton won the leadership we’d HAVE to vote for him…”
I’m not so sure he wouldn’t be better than Campbell!!

  12. CJ, please correct me if I’m wrong, but from what I read in the National Post, this wasn’t a case of a bunch of delegates horse-trading and swapping votes for favours, as KPD alleges.
Each riding association gets 80 votes, which are allocated by a vote amongst its members. Members could also indicate a second (and, if they choose, a 3rd and 4th) choice. In the event that no one gets a majority on the first ballot, the bottom candidate is dropped, his/her votes are re-allocated according to second choices, and so on, until one candidate has a majority.
KPD, maybe you and your apparent political science degree could explain to the rest of us how this process is “Insider apparatchiks in a closed “members only” club decide behind closed doors who gets to lord over the subjects.”.
And to answer your question: When was the last time you saw a candidate for Premier, or Prime Minister appear on a ballot where the plebes get to vote?, the last election. And the one before that. And the one before that. etc. And, since your knowledge of Canadian electoral history is incomplete, and before you start sputtering that races by the party leaders in their own ridings are immaterial, let me remind you that as recently as 2007, Ontario PC party leader John “Red” Tory lost his attempt to win the Don Valley West seat in the general election, and had to lead the party from outside the legislature.
    Thanks so much for playing.

  13. well bob….perhaps we should compare notes someday!
but for myself…being a gentleman with a gentleman’s upbringing and education i couldn’t possibly publically offer up for comment anything in the way of contradiction to your sentiment.
it’s a lord copper thing…my lips are sealed of course…but only up to a point.

  14. uh bob?
    you wrote ‘very very nice’….
if i’d only met someone once over lunch i very much doubt i’d double up as to the person’s integrity and insinuate further their virtue as you have…

  15. Agree 100% with the comments regarding Christy Clark.
She never even finished getting her university degree. I know a university degree is not the only thing that makes a person capable. Nonetheless, in this day and age to become the premier of a province and not even have a degree is a sorry story.

  16. It should be remembered too, that she (Christy) worked for CKNW and was highly recommended by the ineffably bubble-headed Bill Good and some others at the station.
That is not true, although Pamela Martin is a vocal Clark supporter.
Instead, they should have been digging in and finding out about the B.C. Rail scam that has cost the taxpayers of B.C. untold millions.
They did, and there is nothing to it.

  17. How very democratic. Insider apparatchiks in a closed “members only” club decide behind closed doors who gets to lord over the subjects.
Where have you been all your life? Welcome to the British Parliamentary system.

  18. The NDP is enough of a train wreck to pull defeat from the jaws of victory even with a split opposition
No. The NDP has a solid 40% of the vote who will not vote otherwise. If the Liberals split, we are doomed to NDP hell.

  19. All six (at the time) candidates had a radio debate on Good’s CKNW show a couple of weeks ago. They all came accross very well in my opinion. Any of them is hands down preferable to the NDP. Now I only hope the party chooses someone who can beat the NDP in the next election. I don’t care who it is otherwise.

  20. For something refreshingly different …
kakola @7:15 , alex writes some good stuff, I visit his site few times a month. worth checking out.
For my 2cents worth: All the Lib’s on offer suck. I figure it’ll end up between Kevin ‘spin-cycle’ Falcon & George ‘fill in this space’ Abbott.
I disagree with these contests: when a sitting Premier resigns he shuold gave a couple weeks to clear out then we have a general election – but then you need a republic for that, not our current lousy model. jmo

  21. randall g, NDP will will the next election unless the liberals *clearly* demonstrate that they are prepared to get government expenditures under control.
When Campbell first came into office he reigned in spending. By the time he left office he spent like a drunken sailor and had to start finding ways to tax everything he could. Right now the distinction between the liberals and NDP is almost superficial, and this will favour the NDP.
Gordon Campbell would like his legacy to be the Olympics, cleaning up the mess from the previous NDP government, etc. etc. Unfortunately because of his *asinine* carbon tax, reckless spending, HST tax grab, etc. his legacy will likely be the ushering in of an NDP government.

  22. Why so sad dailyrasp, it’s the best news the BC Conservative party could have. These Liberals doubled our provincial debt in 10 years…they do not deserve to be re-elected and with Christy, I don’t think they will.

  23. “CJ, please correct me if I’m wrong, but from what I read in the National Post, this wasn’t a case of a bunch of delegates horse-trading and swapping votes for favours, as KPD alleges.

Yes, that’s the way I understand it. Will there be a second ballot/chance to vote for the party members? I don’t know. Preferential vote-counting is more complicated than some people think.

  24. badbeta I partially agree with you. Christy will be the downfall of the Liberals. She is an uneducated leftie, and not particularly competent, and most voters will figure that out.
If Christy wins, > 50% chance the NDP takes the next election. You can thank Campbell.

  25. Clark it is. Just wonderful…BC now has a premier who never even finished university.
    The NDP must be celebrating.

  26. Dang, I was hoping the next leader would be one who would get rid of the reviled carbon tax.
Now I believe it’s here to stay, with this big L Liberal leader.

  27. Time to vote BC Conservative. If that doesn’t work have to decide whether I want to experience Alberta winters again or take my chances by moving to the US before 2012. At least can get a CCW there. Time to start planning now and most likely scenario is that an already very doctor short area of the province will lose another doctor.

  28. Listening to Farnswaorth and Dix this evening talking about how the Liberal leadership hopefuls were “the same old gang” was comical. These two clowns were Glen Clark’s lapdogs and are the last thing that BC needs.

  29. Clark is just the worst possible candidate, don’t have a clue what the ‘liberal’ party was thinking.
This will divide the coalition absolutely, paving the way for the rent seekers.
In her speech, she kept going on about ‘families first’ and the ‘coalition’……almost as a reminder to herself that its a coalition, not a Federal Fiberal bash……
And yeah, she’s up to her eyeballs in the BCR scam, just the MSM refuses to investigate or dig deep, move along, nothing to see here….

  30. The good news is that BC government employees (that I pay for) get another stat holiday … what the heck, we don’t have enough part-time jobs in BC already.
On the bright side, the NDP are going to have to explore policies that Stalin wouldn’t even dream of to be the “left” party.

  31. All you need to know about Christy is that only one sitting MLA supported her. No one who has worked with her wants anything to do with her – charisma without substance like a certain American politician we know. She is the second coming of Bill Vancerzalm and will destroy the free-enterprise coalition just as he did. This is truly a sad day for BC. Isn’t change wonderful.

  32. okay, can we start betting what will the new Premier of BC get convicted of? Hey, I’m just sayin’ it seems to be a tradition in BC politics 😉
