  1. They signed their death warrant when they cancelled Don Messer in 1969. Viewers protested by the thousands, but to no avail. It was one of the highest rated shows on the network, but wasn’t highbrow enough for CBC management.

  2. reruns of RazzleDazzle and junior forest rangers here we come.
Celebrity Cooks , where you never recognized anyone
Game shows where you play for six months to win a set of towels.

  3. Bring back The Littlest Hobo. That’s real Canadian TV. No homos, militant lesbians, no BDS, drewling Obamunist Marxists and other Lefty whackos and kooks. Just good morality and a sweet smart dog.

  4. Look …..What’s more popular these days than the Food Channel…….I suggest the CBC follow the lead of major newspapers and create a show of televised restaurant reviews……with W. Kinsella as host……..

  5. CBC needs to consolidate and focus. Consolidate on 1 tv channel, 1 radio, plus the web site. Focus on programming not done on other stations.
Arts, Documentaries. Bonus if they’re Canadian.
    Drop the US programming.
    Drop sports.
And for God’s sake, drop the antiques roadshow.

  6. I have no idea which are the most popular shows on CBC but if they start cutting watch for talk of cutting those first. The simple reason being that the howls of protest will be louder and longer for all to hear. The old political slight of hand trick, threaten cuts to programs that affect the most people and they will do your whining, bitching and screaming for you. A tried and true method, that works.

  7. And I notice that Jim Bawden doesn’t notice that the CBC telling up to half of its potential audience to “get lost” might have something to do with its ever-dropping ratings. It reminds me of the painful Studio Two Friday night when the discussion of the death of newspapers (including the Red Star‘s Honderich) failed to mention liberal media bias. (From the parts I could stomach watching.)
I don’t know if Doug’s a moby or not, Karl, but I think that The Littlest Hobo was aired on CTV, just like Corner Gas:

  8. We need an updated spin off version of the Dragon’s Den. It would feature a room full of sophisticated upscale taxpayers such as myself. Refreshments would be served. CBC executives and personalities would enter the room to plead their case for increased funding for the CBC and to pitch ideas for new shows.
Then we would bounce beer cans and whiskey bottles off their heads until they left.
The person who endured the longest barrage of beer cans, half eaten KFC meals and verbal abuse would win a free breakfast at Dennys.

  9. “Game shows where you play for six months to win a set of towels.”
Remember 9 square feet of Z-Brick?

  10. Western Canadian – I believe that strategy was called “kill the giant” – after the show “The Friendly Giant” with Bob Homme.
CBC was told to cut – so they picked something popular that everyone loved.
So yes, watch for successful programs to be cut
    From wiki:
“In 1984, the Canadian federal government made deep cuts into the CBC budget, and The Friendly Giant was cancelled soon afterwards, though CBC executives insisted that the show’s passing was unrelated to the cuts.[citation needed] It was commonly thought at the time that the move was intended to create enough public outrage that the government funding cuts to the CBC would be reversed.[citation needed] While there was strong public sentiment to keep the show on the air, the funding cuts were not reversed, and no new shows were made. It aired regularly for years afterwards as repeats.”

  11. Norman – ditch the antique road show and burn the recordings.
The original one I liked a lot. It was very informative and entertaining. They had a knowledgeable host and they had numerous quirky experts backing them up. The item in question usually had a fascinating story behind it. In the end they had a summary on the style, date, artist and estimated price.
So when I stumbled on the CBC version I thought, hey this might be cool, (completely forgetting we’re dealing with the cbc here…) I might find some interesting Canadiana. It was Melanie Pringle I believe hosting – no experts on hand. The first item was a chair, the owner goes on to describe “oh well it’s been sitting in the basement since forever and I put boxes of screw on it and I thought I’d bring it in…” Pringle, who I doubt could tell the difference between a Quaker chair and a baby stool, yuks it up with lame one liners. Then in the summary they conclude; ‘an old chair’ That’s it ‘an old chair’
I smacked myself on the forehead saying “cbc cbc cbc cbc cbc….”

  12. From the link:
    Bawden nails it:
“…go after middle management which has grown like weeds in the past decades. There are floors of these paper pushers as befits every federal bureaucracy. But what do they contribute?…”
    Yep…tax money…
    easy come, easy go.
I’m repeating myself but I would miss the local CBC radio ‘Morning North’. Local news, challenging interviews of local politicians, and real community interest.
Bawden is right…they could can CBC TV and no one would notice. The lefties would still have the Toronto Star to tell them what to think.

  13. I’m also with the “Shut the Whole Damn Thing Down” crowd.
Just about everything they do smacks of social engineering and “enlightening” – see “Stephen and Chris”, and “Little Mosque”, and all the sex documentaries and anti-Bush docs they show on Newsworld.
It’s insulting. Stop trying to tell me what’s “normal” and politically correct. I’ll decide for myself what is right and wrong, thank you very much.

  14. What the CBC needs is a damned good dose of conservatism for a wholesale change.
A Kate McMillan, Wendy Sullivan or Kathy Shaidle to replace George S. at 8:00 pm eastern, to shake loose from their decades long moribund leftist crap we taxpayers support by force.
CBC would have a winner for a change, even if it represents only tossing us conservatives a few crumbs from their leftist table.

  15. I have a few suggestions for talk shows that would play to CBC’s audience: The “Warren Kinsella Show”, followed by “The Judy Rebick Show”, followed by “Jack Layton at Large”,then “The Wendy Cukier Show” and ending with the triumphant “Toronto, Toronto, Toronto”, hosted by the latest failed Canadian actor.

  16. I rarely turn on my TV and just about never to the CBC. I do listen to the radio sometimes As It Happens is less biased and O’Reilly on Age of Persuasion an insider that talks about advertising in an entertaining informative way. I never learned the answer to when you eat your Smarties do you eat the red ones last?

  17. I guess gay and lesbian shows are not that popular after all!! Add to that Harper-Conservative bashing, and you’ve got the Titanic headed for a floating ass-berg!!

  18. For me, the CBC replaying “An Inconvenient Truth” on Christmas Day, during the coldest winter in recent memory was an insult and a slap in the face.
For that alone, they should be de-funded.

  19. What the F***, why think of ways to keep the CBC.
Only Canadians would “publicly” fund a demeaning, frumpy, fraudulent, propaganda (from WW11) media. The CBC are a PBS on steroids, operating from an agenda that is not in the best interest of Canada.
The CBC demeans Canadians by reminding them continually that they are not good enough (mother Country syndrome) to compete and must except the scraps of other more sophisticated Countries (England, France Etc). It’s a method of maintaining political control within a Commonwealth country
CBC is the S&M version of a ghoulish media. Its time to give up those childish things, Canada!
    Fire them! Fire then all!

  20. I was going to be a wise ass and say Franco may be dead but his HE 111 lives on. So I googled it for a picture.
But apparently the Confederate Air Force HE 111 crashed in July 2003.
    http://www.stelzriede.com/ms/html/mshwma29.htm
“The pilot of the plane, Neil R. Stamp, and the copilot, Charles Stephen Bates, perished in the crash. Stamp, 56, resided in Cave Creek, Ariz. Bates, 54, resided in Phoenix, Ariz. Both were members of the Arizona Wing of the CAF.”
They lost an engine on landing approach, and the pilot put her down into a field to avoid hitting houses.
This is a very sad thing, I must say. I was privileged once upon a time to crawl through that airplane with a camera from one end to another. I think I’ll post some of those pictures in memory of the airplane and the two men who died in her last flight.
Screw Franco and screw the CBC, but I loved that airplane. It was awesome.

  21. I don’t think it should be scrapped. I just believe that some producers need to be fired, others need to be educated. I honestly believe that the CBC should reflect on Canada’s general moral, political and social values.

  22. yup…charlie chamberlain and marg osborne….an entertainment left and a right punch we shall not see again…..the chemistry….the romantic sizzle those two could generate was a great part of my sexual awakening and a rite of passage toward my safe and secure middle class existence……this country owes a tremendous debt to don messer for discovering them and showcasing their talent…
fyi i still wear a black kentucky colonel bow tie in repectful memory of Mr Chamberlain.

  23. Definitely agree with the suggestion that the cuts should come from management. There could be trimming of at least 50% at middle management and upwards of 75% at upper management with the only effects being an incredible amount of money available for programing. Although the idea of “Layton at Large” combined with the “Most Wanted” would be intrigueing, absolute dissolution of the CBC would be best.

  24. ‘fyi i still wear a black kentucky colonel bow tie in repectful memory of Mr Chamberlain.’
Does it get you freebies at KFC?

  25. Good. Kill off state run television. They can come back and compete as a private network if they want.

  26. Joe Citizen said “I honestly believe that the CBC should reflect on Canada’s general moral, political and social values.”
Trouble is, Joe, they’ve been promoting ONLY Toronto’s general moral, political and social values and labelling them as Canada’s.
Insulting. They should be renamed the Toronto Broadcasting Corp. and be immediately defunded.

  27. Oh, the salad days; those were the days, my frens; we thought they’d never …
“The public broadcaster treated indefatigable activists of culture to their hottest dates.”
    …-
“George Jonas on the CBC: A medium dragged down by the masses”
“Imagine a bureaucratic bohemian, sipping a mug of Ovaltine flavoured with absinthe, while reading the King James version of Marx’s Das Capital, and you’re close.
“Trying to be everything to everyone, CBC-TV ended up being nothing to anyone.”
“Paying freelance readers a buck fifty per script report in 1960, the Corp was a plentiful source of sardines on toast when I started out. In its heyday during the ’60s and ’70s, CBC’s studios and boardrooms beat any string of singles’ bar for action. The public broadcaster treated indefatigable activists of culture to their hottest dates. It would be difficult for me to have anything but fond memories of the CBC.”

  28. Sell CBC to Fox and turn Newsworld into Fox News North (FNN)!!!
    Wouldn’t that be fun.

  29. agent smith
i know(NOT in the biblical sense i assure you) a gal nurse in T.O. that cared for Colonel Harlan when he became ill there…
…..she confided to me that when she asked him what he’d like for his dinner he specifically asked it NOT be any chicken entree…..as far as i know this is a true story….
yes indeed….his bow/string tie….i also once foolishly affected wearing a ‘flavour saver” mustache in his honour…..

  30. Stopped watching CBC back in ’55 when they bumped
The Plouffe Family and replaced it with with Don Messer’s Jubilee. Or maybe it was The Tommy Hunter Show.

  31. Put Kathy Shaidle in charge of the CBC – then televise all of the CHRC hearings her actions generate. This would provide cheap entertaining programming and keep the CHRC occupied from doing its real work of hassling hard working small business owners. I myself would regularly tune in just to see which commissioner Shaidle is strangling this week.

  32. Send the CBC losers back to the attics of the big hotels where they started, or the closets where they all belong now. News flash Toronto CBC types, we here on the outside, are quite capable, of making up our own minds and our own opinions without you government welfare bums trying to ram your pathetic social engineering down our throats. Sell to Fox news while Rupert is still alive, don’t wait Harper.

  33. The phrase State Run TV is indicative of a communist country, I’m not the least bit interested in saving CBC or the unofficial PR firm for the Liberal Elite Party. Forcing taxpayers to fund state TV is something I expect in Cuba, Saudi Arabia and Iran not a democratic country like Canada.
quote: I have a few suggestions for talk shows that would play to CBC’s audience: The “Warren Kinsella Show”, followed by “The Judy Rebick Show”, followed by “Jack Layton at Large”,then “The Wendy Cukier Show” and ending with the triumphant “Toronto, Toronto, Toronto”, hosted by the latest failed Canadian actor.

Thankyou dmorris, I’ll have phucking nightmares for weeks at just the thought of watching those fruitloops on TV. If I could just get a handful of your hair, if you have hair?

  34. Here in the Lower Mainland there was a great show on CBC AM radio called “Hot Air”. It was moved from the 4 PM Saturday time slot and/ or canceled. I can no longer find it. Anyway, it was a great show about jazz and it introduced me to many great jazz styles and artists. The local CBC FM French language station has great jazz in the Mon-Fri drive home time slot; can’t understand the announcer but the music’s great. If the CBC canned all its “news” and current affairs shows and played nothing but jazz I would glue my car radio dial to CBC. But alas, I have a better shot at marrying Jodie Foster than that happening.

  35. The ossified remains that is called jeffrey Simpson has a column in the G&m today that is about ten to fifteen years out of date at least advising the CBC to stop doing programming that. An be found on private networks.
The. CBC lost the plot a long rimae ago an it cease tellng canadians about Canada and began having toronto telling the rest of Canada how to behave and act. Those working for the ceeb in the regions had/have no chance of moving up to the national level u less their politics fit with the TO hip.
Just as the forces threatened to chop the snowbirds and the RCMP the musical ride the CBC is threatning to cut their most popular programs – such as they are- first. It would be cool if someone in the CP cabinet pointed this out and offered up a different list.
What would also be cool would be a royal commission that allowed public interveners like Kate and the rest of us to get in front of a mic and rip the scabs off of Canada’s eyes. I suspect the sympathy for the CBC is very shallow – much more shallow than the MSM would have us believe.

  36. The Federal government indubitably must not, under any circumstance, cave-in to the begging, whining socialists at the CBC by providing them with their so-called “shortfall” which is a result of the mismanagement of their leftist managers, the lack of unbiased quality programming and their affirmative action bimbos.
If Canada had a legitimate, small-c fiscal conservative Prime Minister, he would eradicate the complete far-left bias CBC. If the PM eliminated this national embarrassment Canadians would see $1.2 billion of otherwise squandered tax dollars materialize in their personal bank accounts annually.
In an age of numerous Canadian television and radio networks, satellite networks, and of course the internet, there is no longer any requisite for a government-owned, and tax payers paid for, TV and/or radio network; especially one ran by left-wing affirmative action bimbos and watched/ listened to mostly by the far-left, but paid for my people who actually work for a living and pay taxes.
Our left-plunging PM keeps insisting that he is expediting an asset sale program; however, to date we have not seen very many sales. If Harper was a genuine small-c fiscal conservative he would immediately eradicate or sell the complete far-left bias CBC and force the bimbos to get a real job.

  37. How would we survive without George Strombowhatever doing his Zoolander impressions?
    Blue Steel is my favourite.

  38. Naw give an option. You have been left wing for the last 60 years, you want money be right wing for the next 60. Balance.

  39. I couldn’t be happier that the axe is falling at the CBC. I seriously do hope though that the nouveau unemployed will be be able to find real jobs.

  40. “They should be renamed the Toronto Broadcasting Corp. and be immediately defunded.”
David Miller and his city hall circus would probably pick up the funding for the TBC. Doesn’t he fund every other variety of left wing bull crap at the city taxpayer’s exense?

  41. Joe Citizen said “I honestly believe that the CBC should reflect on Canada’s general moral, political and social values.”
So who decides on the values? Some one from Montreal, Toronto-Rosedale, Vancouver, Come-by-Chance Nfld? Who?
Your community values reside in your community. And the country has thousands of communities. Tough to distill them all down to a palatable facsimile.
Corner Gas is an example. Funny but still insulting I think.

  42. Machiavelli:
Do you seriously think that were the cpc to table legislation to close the CBC that:
    A) it would pass in the senate. No doubt the BQ would support it I the hoc.
    B) that the cpc would not be seriously harmed politically and blamed for the end of yet another canadian myth like it was with the arrow?
The CPC is doing all it can to achieve the conservative goals that you and I want within the political realities that exist today. That is exactly what a machiavellian believes in us it not?
