Yuri Bezmenov

An interview with former KGB agent.

It’s pretty fantastic to imagine that a magazine, read and trusted by millions of Americans (published in Des Moines, Iowa, for goodness’ sake), could be completely fooled into acting as a propaganda mouthpiece for the USSR right at the height of the cold war. Armed with another vital tool of the information age –eBay– I set out to find this issue of Look and see it for myself. By amazing luck, there it was, the October 3, 1967 issue of Look, for sale cheap. Once it arrived I busily set out to see if Bezmenov was talking through his hat or bragging.

That should give you lots to chatter about.

  1. The picture shown on the front of the Look issue in 1967 is remarkably similar to the appearance of Moscow when my wife and I visited Moscow for a river cruise to St Petersburg in 2005. St. Petersgrad was Leningrad in 1967. Will it be renamed Putingrad in the future?
Having said this, hopefully the awareness Russia will always have it’s self interest as it’s goal will be the main focus of the Western communicators. It is this type of focus which will mean the it is Russian self interest to maintain a healthy awareness of North American self interest. Europe will bend any way Russia wants until they cry for assistance, once again, from North America.

  2. We have a lot of ‘useful idiots’ in this country. They are now in all three major political parties.

  3. Our Useful Idiots in the MSM are still shills for Communism. The sickeningly gushing and fluffy Olympic coverage from China was gagging. Watching you never would have guessed it was a totalitarian state where human rights are violated daily and when transplant organs are in short supply they to dole out more capital punishment sentences. NBC barely opened their mouths as the Chinese cheated day after day during the gymnastics in front of our eyes. The amoral wimps didn’t want to offend.
Any doubters that Bezmenov was exaggerating just need look at the Marxist larvae that were planted and hatched on our college campuses decades ago.
The Cold War ended and we never killed the beast because the marketplace of free ideas where bad ideas get debated and shot down for good was hijacked by the lefties in the media and academia.

  4. Guess the gulags were closed for visits from American journalists.
Same problem when Sean Penn visits Cuba and then declares it be a superior society.

  5. He came to this country in 1970 and he speaks of now, 14 years later … would that be 1984?
No question, even if it was 25 years ago, is a pretty prophetic message.

  6. Canada is one coalition government (taliban Jack’s ND’s, Gilles Duceppe Quebec Bloc and Iggy’s leftist Libs) away from becoming a defacto communist state.
The indoctrination Bezmenov speaks of has long ago taken place in our universities, school board unionized classrooms, UNIONIZED CIVIL SERVICE, and the ivory towers of MSM in this country.
The entitlement mindset is second nature to at least two generations of Canadians.
Once ensconced in power, the shift to total reliance on government would be very quickly slip into place by well planned subversive laws, forever changing Canada into a communist state.

  7. “Anyone can successfully lie to you, but you’ll eventually get the facts and quit trusting them.”
Why does that sound familiar and remind me of dinosaurs?

  8. This former KGB (Kind Good Boys) agent reminds me of my excursions behind the then Iron Curtain in ’77, ’81 & ’86.
I saw this interview some time ago, but it is still relevant today. Trust me the government is not there to help you, but rather the government exists to help themselves. The less of it the better.
After 70 million dead in the former Soviet Union, and some 100 million in Communist China, any thinking person would quickly disabuse themselves of the notion that the grand ‘proletariat of the people’ is going to come and save you.
I think we seen enough of all the Marxist claptrap one could possibly tolerate; save for the dodos still drinking at the Marxist well in Canadian universities.

  9. i also saw this interview many years ago. it was true then and the fruit of the efforts is still growing. obama is a child of the system.

  11. The Obama years may prove to be the culmination of the Soviets many years of infiltrating our educational institutions, and trade union organizations.
Communism appeals to many, especially those who have a “superiority” complex, as so many of Bezmenov’s “useful idiots” do. They envision themselves as one of the ruling elite, and NOT the poor slobs who have to do the heavy labour, for little reward.
Talk to any socialist/communist educator, and you’ll very quickly find they have NO idea that a Country cannot run on theory, but on the HARD WORK of millions of ordinary citizens. And they have NO intention of being one of “the masses”.
There is a regular poster on SDA, who had a relative highly placed in the Canadian government security services, during the 1950’s and 1960’s. I spoke with the gentleman on several occasions, and though bound by a security code that forbade discussing the details of his job for thirty years, what he was able to impart was enough to scare the hell out of me. Canada was infiltrated by the KGB, possibly more than any other U.S. Ally.
I hope he weighs in on this thread.

  12. I see this every day in my students. There is no amount reason or facts that can be presented to them to change their view that michael moore has the correct view of America.
They have been completely and totally brainwashed just as he described.

  13. I guess this is what shit creek looks like when you don’t have a paddle!
    Two points.
In an article yesterday ( can’t remember which site) the writer compared the ‘absolutely necessary, can’t live without it, multi-trillion dollar stimulus’ that will go into triage for many of our most poorly managed but most visible industries, to the $60 trillion total American economy. He makes the point well that it is foolish to believe that this stimulus can have much effect on the overall economy. Why does the citizen give away all their power to the government?
Second, it may be a good thing that this economic downturn has happened before all of our guns were taken away. We may need them.

  14. At least it seems that all the “useful idiots” and lefties will be killed first. Is there an address I could send my resume to? I’d like to apply for the job of executioner.

  15. “So what do you call these useful idiots when they are dead and not required??”
    Fertilizer.

  16. Savage reality!!!…confirms suspicions and obsevations, vindicates distrust of useful idiot left, send chills thinking that the ballot box will not stop international socialism/communism.
Perhaps to get a leap start on this we can we forgo the counter revolution and just get to his suggestion putting the useful idiots up against the wall?? I mean the soviets and global socialists would do it any way….

  17. WOW: this guy says it like it is–and long before it was.
    I’m impressed–and as concerned as I was!

  18. Right on lookout.I think if I had seen it 25 years ago I would have shrugged him off as a scare mongering Russian.
But we have seen so many of his descriptions and warnings, such as indoctrination of campuses, create a crisis, and use of Hollywood elite come to pass in the last few years. He was right on!
Waiting to see some lefties get ‘picked off’.

  19. demoralization – that is perfectly accurate. You can see so clearly that this has occurred. So many people think Western civilization/ Judeo Christian values/ capitalism are responsible for the all the major ills on the planet. No amount of clear cut facts will dissuade such demoralized people. This demoralization chips and chips away at our ability to stand up for ourselves and our way of life. Many have come to accept that “we suck”.
I see this so often among left wing Jews when it comes to defending Israel. They are completely demoralized by the constant barrage of “colonial, imperialist, occupiers, land/water thiefs, obstacle to peace,” etc. nonsense, that they defend their own mortal enemies.
At work, even though I am in the sciences, the majority of students and profs are fully enamored with Obama, take every opportunity to bash George Bush (even in molecular biology seminars), think Mr. Harper is a reincarnation of Hitler and on and on. Demoralized is the perfect description of their attitude towards their own society and heritage.

  20. heard a news item on the radio in the last two years, it was about the release of a socialite’s memoirs, one of McCarthy’s targets, in it she wrote the McCarthy essentially had it right
this came to mind as soon as I saw the video

  21. George Soros was a Hungarian Jew that survived the holocoust without so much as a scratch. He then managed to escape the Iron Curtain, again without so much as a scratch. He made it to the UK where he became a billionaire without so much as a scratch. Now he funds left-wing groups and propoganda.
    Coincidence? Maybe.
    More than a confidence? Probably.

  22. I used to make an anology about “the useful idiots” in the period immediately after the USSR imploded…..
A sci-fi scenario of a galactic civilization which sent forth recon drones to seek out inhabitable worlds, to then be depopulated by death drones in preparation for colony ships which would follow…..the civilization collapsed by the drones continued on preparing for ships which would never come…..
Nature hates a vacuum—-this prediction of Bezmenov is now out of date—-the useful idiots are unknowingly preparing the ground for the islamofascists who IMNSHO seek to fill the vacuum.
    Just look around…..think about it…..

  23. i was a very good friend of Henning Sorenson….a Danish communist who came to Canada in the 30’s…..
he was Norman Bethune’s ADC and translator in the Spanish civil war….Henning was invited to Red China in the 60’s and feted nonstop because of his connection with Bethune who is a ‘hero’ in China…
Henning was a very cultured man…yet a very down to earth man…spoke read and wrote in 7 languages….liked a drink…liked women…ended up in the end as a translator(a sinecure i think) for a popular enough Jewish communist lawyer/politician in my hometown(he spoke at my college once and i distinctly remember him speaking the words “captains of industry”) who mirabile dictu was in the same regiment(along with V.C. winner Smoky Smith) as my father in Sicily and Italy during the second big one….
anyway…to get to my point…Henning and I would shoot the breeze and drink of an afternoon and try as i might i could never elicit any criticism of communism…other than a remark he made once that “how could we know someone like Stalin would get control of the international?”
meaning of course that the basic concept was still sound….so Henning died a true believer in the basic goodness of humankind…an ideologue certainly..and an idealist of course…..much like our friend Che Guevara.

  24. Che was maybe an idealist, certainly an idealogue but definately a thug.
    Says it all really.
I do wish that those who wish to pontificate actually become pontiff before they do so.
    Meaning:
Don’t judge those that wield power until you wield power.

  25. In the second update to his essay, Roborant says that the Soviet Union was never really a super power. He then cites the fact that their economy was only 10% of the United States economy. What he forgets is that they had (and still do) nuclear capability with multiple launch platforms. Sure they were way behind in the economy, but they were up there with brute force. The nuclear bombs they had were super powerful.
And this is what is so worrying about what is going on in the Middle East and on the Korean peninsula.
On a second matter, I was in China to watch the Olympics. It seems that at least some of the people are taking more freedom than the Government is officially giving them. My translators told me many stories about life in China that do not appear in the news. For instance, I was told of families with more than one child. The subsequent children are “black”. Their births are not registered. They are raised as a sister’s child or under some similar ruse. The mother’s and their health care is provided by doctors who look the other way. They are home schooled etc. The families are convinced that in the near future the prohibition will be lifted. The cultural revolution was described to me in brutal terms of killing and confiscation and the poverty that exists in rural areas was also described. But the overall perception I got was of a people who are aware that at any moment the powers that be might crack down again, but certain segments of the population are cautiously extending the boundaries of acceptable behavior and conversation.

  26. RW?…
begging your pardon Holy Father…but it’s definItely NOT “definately”….
the ‘a’ and the “i’ are very widely spaced on MY keyboard…..and yours?
so remember now, ‘irony’ is not spelled with an ‘a’….

  27. “What do you call these useful idiots when they are no longer needed?”
    — Trotskyites, deviationists, victims of sluggish schizophrenia, enemies of the state, unstable elements, umm, let’s see, what else did Stalin call them all?
    Oh yeah, Ukrainians.

  28. Bezmenov’s points also fit in neatly with the global warming crowd’s attempt to seize power. The MSM useful idiots are right there doing their job as required and as predicted by Bezmenov 30 years ago.

  29. Anyone interested in this interview might also be interested in the 1981 novel, The Spike, by Arnaud de Borchgrave. He laid out exactly how the Soviets had taken over large segments of the US media. I don’t believe he coined the term “disinformation,” but he certainly explained how the Soviets fed it to the gullible or bought-off American media.

  30. “you cannot change their mind even if you expose them to authentic information”…”dropouts and half-baked intellectuals”…”the process of demoralization is complete and irreversible.”
    Truth is beautiful.
