Danger of Disinformation

On the anti-DDT hysteria:

President George W. Bush’s new international anti-malaria campaign has been greeted with enthusiasm by its victims, but with pseudoscience by commentators.
That is not unusual: Fallacies infect every debate about the environment and affect policy, taxpayers’ money and victims’ lives.

We like to poke fun at the global warming hysterics, but they haven’t killed anywhere near as many African children as the DDT activists.
And a group specializing in exactly that type of disinformation closer to home and making good money at it- As You Sow.

  1. I guess the global warming bunch will have the last “I told you so” in 5 years while they are burying the 4.5 billion dead.

  2. Social activists, driven by ideology and backed by dodgy science, have done considerable harm by opposing certain technologies:
    – Genetic engineering
    – Nuclear power
    – High-temperature incineration
I guess now we can add “DDT” to the list.

  3. I seem to remember an eco activist who said last year that it was now officially too late to do anything anyway. I haven’t heard anybody quoting him, not surprisingly.

  4. An additional view of the DDT debate is found in the current Economist magazine… where they look at the Aids – malaria connection.
    http://economist.com/science/displayStory.cfm?story_id=8380342
The decision to ban DDT has resulted in far more deaths from malaria, than the current AIDS epidemic or global climate change put together… and all with the same concern for our souls as the new age enviro saviours.. that we are too stupid to save ourselves, so “we” will do it for you.

  5. Yes eco extortion is becoming a very profitable enterprise.
I guess it goes to show that some people just don’t want to get a real job.
I don’t want it thought that pollution doesn’t concern me…it does.
Its just that everytime I get around these folks I feel the need to take a shower.

  6. Dr. Patrick Moore has been involved in the DDT issue for years
    http://www.aaenvironment.com/DDT.htm
Never heard of him ?? Co-founder of Greenpeace International in the 1970s
    http://greenspirit.com/key_issues.cfm?msid=34
had a falling-out with Greenpeace when it became radicalized in the 80s. The fall of the Berlin wall and the failure of Socialism/Communism produced a lot of radicals looking for another cause. They found the Eco-Terrorist movement and the rest, as they say, is history. Including the UN and Kyoto and Maurice Strong.
For years Patrick Moore has been savaged by the radicals

but now he is being vinticated on an almost daily basis. For one, DDT is now again fighting the killer, Malaria.
Because of the radicals promoting the 1960s book ‘Silent Spring’, millions of people, mostly children, have died a horrible death from Malaria. Are the fanatics liable ??
Has anyone ever seen Dr. Patrick Moore on TV ?? Or ever heard of his battle with the radicals ??
Oh, and by the way, has anyone ever heard of a fruit-fly watcher named David Suzuki ?? Ever seen him on TV ??

  8. Why anyone who is not addicted to annal secks and tofu would choose to run a business in San Francisco is beyond understanding.
They hate anything that remotely resembles enterprise, prosperity, self-reliance, or work.
San Francisco has become a completely demented region of the USA and if we ever needed an
off-the-scale earthquake in that region … it is now.

  9. Ah…wadda they care……poor mosquito blighted African villagers can’t afford to buy Carbon Credits.

  10. We mustn’t forget that malaria is natural, and, as long as it occurs “over there”, is quite acceptable, to a lot of caring activists.

  11. Keep ‘diggin’ Dr.Dawg,.. providing lots of liable material, I would think.
Strange, how sites like Bjorn Lomborg, Junkscience, Greenspirit, and others were given to me by real Scientist, real Environmentalists, real Climatologists, real Biologists, real Doctors(MD,OD ect) and others who have a track record of walking the walk and doing productive work.
They are very, very put-off by the enviro-nuts whose only claim to fame is in hyjacking the movement and saying they found a broken piece of the sky while protesting. Sick.

  12. But while checking out SOW I checked the next link over and discovered the following ….. and I saw within that the 16 year old boy is supposed to have counselling paid for by the woman teacher..and I am left at a loss, wondering why a middle teen ager male needs counselling after blowing his stones in a hot blonde thirty year old…that is something he should thank his Higher Power for until he is like …60 or something .

  13. The DDT, and Eco freaks all use the same mantra. Lies are ok truth no good unless altered to reflect their agenda.I do think most of them have a problem with retaining the information they read, how else can you get the facts so wrong. There again that must be a disease.

  14. You can only fool nature for so long…then it comes back to bite you in the ass. DDT may seem like the perfect panacea against malaria, etc., but in reality poison is still poison. If it kills, it can’t possibly be harmless to people. Moreover, increasing tolerance to DDT by insects would lower it’s effectiveness, just like what’s happening with antibiotics. Nothing is perfect.

  15. No one said DDT is a panacea. It is, however, a useful and effective tool to fight malaria, especially in impoverished countries that can’t afford the more expensive alternatives.
And to this day western enviro-groups engage in a range of pressure tactics to restrict its use – withholding aid, trade harassment of agricultural exports, broadcast shameless propaganda and other initiatives through both government and NGO organizations. The deaths of millions should be on their consciences.

  16. Ya, but what if DDT might not work in a couple of decades, or a hundred years, or thousand. Now just go tell that to the millions of people at risk of malaria or already in the death throws of it, will ya.
Is there ANY documented cases of normal DDT use causing illness ?? No. Novels do not count. Widespread mosquito resistence ?? No.
Any cases of even so much of a stomach ache from Genetically Enhanced Foods ?? No, not one.
Any cases of organic foods causing death ?? Yes,lots. And recently.
I was in a huge used book store yesterday and something struck me as to why our world is waky at times. Of the thousands of books, only one small section was true stories. All the rest were novels. Made up stories, from who knows what wierdos mind. Just like the drama-novel, inconvenient truth. Sad.
Our food isn’t safe ?? Oh, how many people a year die from unsafe food ?? Virtually none. How many die of AIDS. Case closed.

  17. “Keep ‘diggin’ Dr.Dawg,.. providing lots of liable material, I would think.”
    Anyone know what this means?
In any case, I see no one is willing to address the points I referenced. Keep punching away at that strawman.

  18. reference dawg. sda commmeters do not source their information from the fiction and novel section of book stores either.

  19. ~~ ALERT ~~
David Suzuki is doing a series of interviews on The Weather Network. http://www.theweathernetwork.com/twn/releases/20070112.htm
The big news here is, Chris Sinclair invites our feed-back. By the tone of Chris’ voice I detected some doubt on his part of the Suzuki line and hence wants feed-back. Feed back TWN will get !!
E-mail: dlangton@pelmorex.com (the boss at TWN)
    and
    E-mail: jsmallbridge@davidsuzuki.org (some person)
    The best feed back possible would be another series of interviews with;
Dr. Patrick Moore, co-founder of Greenpeace International, and
Dr. Tim Ball, Climatologist, who researched hundreds of years of The Hudson Bay Co weather data.

  20. Ah, Tim Ball, uber-shill:
“Ball is promoted by the National Center for Public Policy Research ($225,000 from Exxon Mobil), and Tech Central Station (which also receives support from General Motors). He’s a hot topic on the Coalblog web site, sponsored by the coal companies. In the past year, he’s given policy briefings to the Fraser Institute and the Frontier Centre for Public Policy in Winnipeg.”
Oh, and Patrick Moore (scroll down to Clients).
    Who’s next–?

  21. Yes, Dawg, you are trolling. And you are flailing around with strawman arguments. If you are actually trying to suggest environmentalists have not opposed DDT spraying – if you’re trying to say that aid agencies and NGOs have not threatened to withhold funds if DDT is used due to pressure from environmental – if you’re trying to say there haven’t been trade threats from European countries – well, you’re entitled to your opinion not your own facts.
I certainly won’t waste any more time debating someone who doesn’t appear to inhabit the same planet.

  22. A little reading comprehension is always helpful in these exchanges. Of course DDT spraying was cut back, and even banned in the US in 1972 (by the Environmental Protection Agency, whose head at the time was William D. Ruckelshaus, a Nixon appointee who subsequently served as acting Director of the FBI and was asked to return to the EPA as interim director by Reagan in 1983).
But the “anti-DDT activists killed millions” meme is pseudo-history. No, worse than that, it’s a deliberate, unvarnished lie. The references to which I linked make short work of that right-wing smear.

  23. The decision to ban DDT has resulted in vast numbers of unnecessary deaths. I wonder if anyone posting has ever seem someone sick with malaria? I have treated a malaria infected patient and they are monstrously ill when infected. I can’t imagine the horror of these people suffering without medical attention. Of course, no one will take responsibility for this disaster. Remember Shakespeare’s words, “Methinks the lady doth protest too much.”

  24. Oh dear, mike s, you were doing SO well and I was in full agreement…….until you came to the ‘quote’……’tis “The lady doth protest too much, methinks.”

  25. The so called studies that claimed DDT cueased bird egg shells to thin was based on junk science and that other things will effect bird eggs like wather conditiions and fright the facts is that RACHEAL CARSONS book SILENT SPRING is based on junk science and fruad
