Beaurocratic Efficiency

No, that’s not an oxymoron.
Last Monday I filled out an express post envelope with my application forms and passport for a Brazilian tourist visa. The Brazilian Consulate is in Toronto. I enclosed an express post envelope for its return. The paperwork stated to allow 10 working days. Add two days each way I figured… two weeks.
It arrived this morning.
Wow. Just unbelievable.

  1. Hah. A few years ago I needed a WORK visa for Brazil on short notice.
The lady at the consulate Houston — a four-hour drive away — faxed me the necessary forms and instructions. I asked if I could come and get the stamp in person. She paused a moment and said, “Si, all right.”
So that afternoon I FedExed the package, and the next morning I headed out. At the consulate they were puzzled but willing, and by four o’clock I had everything finished. The next morning I was on the plane.
Brazil is spectacular, and that includes being spectacularly f*d up in many ways. But their diplomatic and Immigration facilites are first-rate, the best I’ve yet encountered including ours and Canada’s.
