They just can’t quit slave labour.

Longtime migrant workers are disgruntled with new waves of arrivals to New York City who they say are undercutting them — claiming anyone hiring them should “get the f—k out of here”.

City data shows over 116,000 migrants have flocked to the Big Apple since last spring and most are making ends meet working in the illegal underground economy — many while still living rent-free at taxpayer-funded hotels and shelters, as the New York Post exclusively revealed.

This poses a problem for more established migrants who have been working cash-in-hand for years.

They say newcomers accept next-to-nothing for work such as painting and concreting, driving down their own earning potential.

A tradesman known as “Parrow” who described himself as an “old timer” said he has been going to the Home Depot on Merrick Boulevard in Queens to pick up construction, plumbing and home improvement work for “20 plus years” but is now struggling.

Boston University hired Ibram X. Kendi to lead its new Center for Antiracist Research in 2020, a year marked by a global pandemic and nationwide racial tension.

Three years later, after at least $43 million in grants and gifts and what sources say has been an underwhelming output of research, the Center for Antiracist Research laid off almost all of its staff last week.

Multiple former staff members allege that a mismanagement of funds, high turnover rate and general disorganization have plagued the Center since its inception.[…]

Former staff members said the Center appeared to prioritize fundraising and revenue over research.

Operation Change The Channel: A progress report from Matt Gurney

[…] I am probably more respectful than many in the press of the need for some secrecy on national security grounds. I see the world through that lens already. I get it.

But, like, wow.

The government needs some kind of message that’s deeper and stronger than “Trust us.” They have to know that, or at least should. If they don’t, that’s not a problem that’s solvable in six days.

And look at the dual communications flops yesterday, from two veteran ministers.

Bill Blair “no commenting” when asked if India might have TRIED TO SABOTAGE THE PM’S FUCKING PLANE. The near-instant panicked clarifications from DND press people told us all we needed to know about that brain fart. Blair himself walked it back later in the day.

But also Marc Miller. This guy is considered one of their smarter ministers, one of their better communicators. And he goes out this week and boldly sets the record straight on Mr. Nijjar’s citizenship … and misses the date by a mere eight years.

That escalated quickly: India suspends visa services in Canada

“Important notice from Indian Mission: Due to operational reasons, with effect from 21 Sept. Indian visa services have been suspended [until] further notice,” the BLS Indian Visa Application Center in Canada said in a statement.

It gave no further details. BLS is the agency that processes visa requests for India, including for entry, tourist, student and employment visas. The centre has physical locations in cities such as Toronto, Ottawa, Winnipeg and Vancouver.

In 2021, 80,000 Canadian tourists visited India, making them the fourth-largest group, according to India’s Bureau of Immigration. Canada is an attractive destination for Indians, especially students. In 2022, nearly 300,000 Indians were pursuing higher education in Canada.

India’s External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi cited unspecified security threats “being faced by our high commission and consulates in Canada.”

“This has disrupted their normal functioning,” said Bagchi. “Accordingly our high commission and consulates are temporarily unable to process visa applications

Loosen those belts:

Cabinet billed more than a quarter million for a three-day cabinet retreat on inflation, records show. Expenses for the meeting at a Vancouver Hyatt a year ago included tens of thousands of dollars for food with catering from one café that sells an $88 “millionaire’s cut” steak and lobster plate: “The cost of living, that is our focus.”

They’re entitled to their entitlements.

Down The Primrose Path

Daily Energy Report:Spain is a gas gate for the EU, but also the backdoor for Russian LNG.

During the first eight months of this year, Russian LNG supplies to Spain soared 62%, reaching 5 bcm up from 3.1 bcm for the same period last year (Figure 5). Spain’s growing appetite for Russian LNG pushed up its share to 19.7% of total imports until the end of August this year, from 10.9% in 2022. The EOA previously estimated that Spain, as well as other EU member states, will find it difficult to halt Russian gas supplies. Stopping imports of Russian gas under current market conditions would put additional pressure on Europe to secure its gas needs.

Spain enjoys a secure gas supply network thanks to its diversified supply routes, seven operating LNG terminals, and robust storage facilities, allowing it to become a gas hub for Europe in the future as the continent curbs its dependence on Russian gas. For now, however, Spain is acting as a back door for Russian LNG flows into Europe.
