Forbes contributor Timothy B. Lee on skim-then-proclaim reporting:
I’ve seen a number of otherwise-reputable media outlets run stories like this one claiming that “more than 100 million people will die and global economic growth will be cut by 3.2 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) by 2030 if the world fails to tackle climate change.”…Yet if you actually read the study the numbers tell a very different story: You can see that “climate” and “carbon”-related maladies accounted for almost 5 million deaths in 2010 and are projected to account for almost 6 million deaths in 2030. More than 60 percent of those deaths in 2010, and a majority in 2030, are due to “indoor smoke,” which means deaths due to “indoor smoke from burning wood and coal for cooking and heating.” In other words, they have nothing to do with greenhouse gases emitted by industrialized nations.
I guess "carbon intensive tortillas" just doesn't have the same ring to it.
…there’s a clear sleight of hand at work here. The study’s introduction focuses primarily on “climate change,” only parenthetically mentioning that “our present carbon-intensive energy system” is responsible for most of the deaths. And that phrase, in turn, seems calculated not to tip off lazy reporters that they’re mostly talking about in-home smoke from coal furnaces and woodstoves. This has caused otherwise-reputable media outlets to inaccurately report these results as “global warming will kill 100 million people.” Many of them don’t even mention that almost 90 percent of those deaths have nothing to do with greenhouse gases or rising global temperatures.Posted by EBD at September 26, 2012 9:16 PM
In other words, the AGW fearmongerers know journalists are lazy, stupid and pliable and use them to push the con.
Imagine, moden journalists being used to fleece the rubes.
Posted by: Fred at September 26, 2012 10:09 PMBelieve it or not, this was the first thing I thought of:
"4Have you considered comparing the % of deaths in 2010 with global population of 7 billion with the % of deaths in 2030 when global population is 8.5 billion?
2010 4,975,000 / 7,000,000,000 = .0711%
2030 5,957,000 / 8,500,000,000 = .0701%
Why is it not good news that fewer people, as a % of total population, will die in 2030 compared to 2010?"-Space Funk
As the author says, fewer people in developing countries would die if they were richer: reliable energy with particulate control(outdoor air pollution, heat and cold deaths), safe water (diarrhea), basic healthcare (malaria, meningitis) and modern appliances (indoor air pollution). The main problem is kleptocracy, theocracy and poverty not CO2.
Cap and Trade/Carbon Taxes used to fund entitlement spending in rich countries does less than nothing for developing nations. In fact, the Clean Development Mechanism has resulted in peasants been thrown off their land and even killed to make way for tree plantations grown for European CO2 offsets (see Honduras).

ignorance and ego account for a large part of the problem in any country. Here in toronto, when I was recieving cancer treatments, there was this husband of a patient who refused to disinfect his hands before entering the cafateria, his excuse was that they were not dirty and didn't need "cleaning", it was then pointed out to him that he had handled door knobs that may carry germs. This whole thing caused him to disinfect his hands on that day only, next day he again refused to do so.
Well here's something Sun News could do if it wants to be good for something. Critical and accurate science reporting is sorely needed.
Posted by: LAS at September 26, 2012 11:30 PMI hope your treatments were successful. My foreman's wife had chemo and I heard how nasty it can be but it worked for her.
There's a line from Coal Miners Daughter where Loretta says : "I may be ignorant, but I ain't stupid!"
And, she's right, there is a difference. The ignorant don't know but can learn. The stupid refuse to learn. Someone who refuses to wash their hands after being told why they need to is plain old stupid. I guess it's debatable if journalists repeating press releases from scientists without seeking to understand the study and refusing to learn about the failure of cap and trade are ignorant or stupid.
According to the CIA fact book, there are presently 107 deaths every minute. Until Jan 1 2030 at midnight there are approximately 9079362 minutes, so at present death rate of 107/min there will be 971,491,734 deaths in that time regardless. An extra 100,000 is nothing.
Posted by: ES at September 26, 2012 11:48 PMMore than 60 percent of those deaths in 2010, and a majority in 2030, are due to “indoor smoke,” which means deaths due to “indoor smoke from burning wood and coal for cooking and heating.”
Almost all of which deaths would be eliminated by cooking and heating using electricity from nuclear power ......

Posted by: Ken (Kulak) at September 27, 2012 12:42 AMI believe that the Gates foundation is funding an initiative to supply cheap electric hot plates to the third world. Many poor people in undeveloped countries cook their meals indoors over an open fire burning wood, coal or animal dung with no chimney or other ventilation. A simple metal hood with a stove pipe and chimney cap to vent the smoke outside would cause a major improvement in their health. Unfortunately, metal is very expensive when the per capita daily income is a few dollars. The temperature outdoors has nothing to do with this problem.

Natural gas is a better bet.

Coal? Not likely. Much more likely dung.

Not so in every case;

Posted by: wallyj at September 27, 2012 8:12 AMIts no surprise. Most of these journotards are dis-educated to the point where they -can't- read the study. How many English majors have y'all met who don't know the difference between accuracy and precision, and for whom the term "relative risk" might have something to do with mothers-in-law?
Plus the studies themselves are for the most part unscientific garbage. Bad design, unscrupulous data gathering, conclusions unsupported by evidence, this is the usual thing.
Posted by: The Phantom at September 27, 2012 9:13 AMOf course there is no mention of the "invisible" death due to poverty and malnutrition as a result of cutting back on carbon emissions. And they fret a decline in GDP as a consequence of global warming but ignore the larger decline in GDP from taking measures against global warming. Even if you concede to their facts, they still lose the argument.

Yeah pretty much but as Al in Ottawa posted....

Stove pipes....have no political power to eliminate western society...enrich no NGOs.....or UN bureaucrats...
