I read the original blogpost. She doesn't seem to get how vastly different- and misogynist- the culture is, even now.

Well it's not like it was "Rape, Rape".

I was in a tour that went to Egypt. We were a small group of 11 people. There were 4 young women on the tour.

I could not believe how rude the women were treated by Egyptian men. The women were followed and harrassed when they went into the markets by themselves. They were followed and harrassed when they were in our group. In fact our guide gave us and them Egyptian phrases to try to deflect the harrassment.

I found a strong and protective warning by me, a large while male, for them to bugger off was effective for short periods of time. I can not imagine what would happen if they got their blood up in an emotional moment.

Not only would they harass the single women, they also harrassed my spouse and me. They would ask me how much I wanted for my wife. They would make suggestive comments to her.

Relatives visiting Egypt asked their Muslim guide what would happen if his daughter married a Christian. That wouldn't happen because he would kill her he said with a straight face. The whole culture disrespects women and foreigners. The clash between Muslim culture and our Western culture has to be experienced to be understood. They are incompatable on so many respects and cannot coexist in the same community. Only the closed minded think otherwise.

A few years ago I saw video footage of a young (white) woman in Detroit who was coming out of a rap concert at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit with her (white) boyfriend. A mob of (black) men started groping her on the steps outside the arena, as her boyfriend ineffectually tried to dissuade them; eventually she was stripped and knocked to the ground, and things went from there. Absolutely, that is a different situation altogether. Swedish/Norwegian/British-born women/girls didn't "put themselves" in their respective countries; rather (as you note) someone else imported/brought in their assailants.

Kate..I used to read stories like this and my first thought would be"Nuke them all", and then of course my next thought would be"But what about all the innocent ones".. Well I am starting to think that there ARE no innocent ones.. Button pushing time is coming, methinks.
