Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit, who also H/T'ed Weasel Zippers, has some video of the Maldives celebrations:

“They have effectively erased all evidence of our Buddhist past,” a senior museum official told AFP at the now shuttered building in the capital Male, asking not to be named out of fear for his own safety.

“We lost all our 12th century statues. They were made of coral stone and limestone. They are very brittle and there is no way we can restore them,”

So, what's next? Egypt's new government seems hell bent on holding its civilization for ransom if the USA doesn't continue to bail it out. Where's Jimah Carter when you need him? (ok, that was sarcasim.)

Feb. 10:

"In response to a phony crisis over 'religious liberty' engendered by the right, President Obama seems to have stood his ground on an essential principle — free access to birth control for any woman."

On a similar note, there is an essential "principle" that I have free access to the New York Times. I plan to start demanding my freebies any day now.

an essential principle — free access to birth control for any woman

What seems to be the problem with that? It seems apolitical to me.

For generations, children have been captivated by Rapunzel and enchanted by Jack and the Beanstalk.

But it seems these traditional fairytales are on their way to an unhappy ending – as parents decide they are too scary.

Another example of "journalism" from our betters.

Headline : Union solidarity rally draws crowd

Members of seven unions plus occupy Nova Scotia show up to rally for the local transit workers on strike.

Number of members of those unions? Well north of 10,000. Number of people in transit union? 750.

Number of people at the "rally"? 75.

Do you think it might be a small coinky dink that the Herald's union representing reporters just voted in favour of strike action?

At National Review today by George Weigel:

The Libertine Police State
Live-and-let-live is not the sexual revolution's endgame.

And here’s one of Obama’s schemes to carry it out:

And to think that the RC Church and others, who understand how crucial sexual morality is to the stability of any society, have been utterly “despised and rejected” by all the smarties, including, lately, the BIG ZER0. The wreck caused by the unbridled adult sexual license of the last few decades is all around us. We ignore this scourge at our peril.

AGW/Red-Green's Killing Fields: Update.

"Heavy snow cuts off thousands for days in Eastern Europe; military planes transport food"

"BUCHAREST, Romania - Military planes flew in tons of emergency food Monday to towns and villages in eastern Romania where thousands have been stranded by blizzards. Some people had to cut tunnels through 15 feet (4 metres) of snow to get out of their homes.

Since the end of January, Eastern Europe has been pummeled by a record-breaking cold snap and the heaviest snowfall in recent memory. Hundreds of people, many of them homeless, have died and tens of thousands of others have been trapped by blocked roads inside homes with little heat.

Authorities declared an alert Monday in eastern Romania, where 6,000 people have been cut off for days. About a dozen major roads were closed, 300 trains cancelled and more than 1,000 schools shut down."

Here is a stunning summary of how Alberta's electrical rates are set in the alledgedly 'deregulated electricity market' by Joe Anglin.

If this is really why some Ab pensioners are getting electrical bills of over $300/month, then there should not be a PC MLA left in the Alberta legislature after the next election.

This is the sickest joke of a 'free market' in any commodity that one could ever imgaine.

And in Alberta yet!
The shame of it all.

"Spanish village goes back to peseta: Residents turn to old money they'd held on to in case the euro folded

Thirty businesses have started using old currency
Spain estimated to have saved 1.7bn euros in pesetas
Jobless rate in Villamayor de Santiago above national average - with a third out of work"

"A desperate Spanish village has turned back time and re-introduced the peseta in a bid to kick-start its ailing local economy.

Residents in Villamayor de Santiago, 80 miles south-east of Madrid, initially held onto the old money for fear the euro would fold.

In recent months their prediction, made when their national currency was phased out ten years ago, has inched closer to coming true.

They have been hit with spiralling unemployment - one third of the village's 2,500 residents are out of work - and a nationwide dwindling ofconfidence in the single currency."

"Cold weather claims more victims across Europe, thousands cut off

Feb 13, 2012, 21:17 GMT

Belgrade - Frost and snow continued to claim dozens of lives across Europe on Monday, while snow cut tens of thousands off in smaller settlements and triggered deadly avalanches.

Worst hit by a massive blizzard which hit the Balkans at the weekend was Montenegro. More snow is expected over the coming days.

Some 80 people onboard a train stuck between avalanches in a gorge in the centre of the country were hoping for rescue by helicopter on Monday, after three nights in isolation. One of the passengers died Sunday, apparently from a heart attack.

In Bosnia the roof of the 1984 Olympic ice arena collapsed under the weight of snow, as did the cover above the stands of the Zeljeznicar football stadium in Sarajevo, the Sarajevo-x news portal reported. Nobody was injured.

In Serbia, a man was swept of a road into an icy lake by an avalanche Sunday, becoming the 21st victim of the ongoing wave of cold and snow. Some 20 sailors on two barges blocked by ice on the Danube downstream from Belgrade were waiting Monday for a helicopter evacuation."

Ratings agency Moody's has downgraded a raft of eurozone countries.

The outlook on the UK's AAA rating has also been changed to "negative"."

"23.00 Here's a closer look at the downgrades:

Italy: downgraded to A3 from A2, negative outlook

Malta: downgraded to A3 from A2, negative outlook

Portugal: downgraded to Ba3 from Ba2, negative outlook

Slovakia: downgraded to A2 from A1, negative outlook

Slovenia: downgraded to A2 from A1, negative outlook

Spain: downgraded to A3 from A1, negative outlook

In addition, the AAA rated countries of Britain, France and Austria have been but on "negative outlook". This means the ratings agency could downgrade these countries in the next 12 to 18 months."

Yikes, given the seriousness of the previous posts, mine seems utterly trivial.

OTOH, pretending we're not aging is one of the elements of denial in which the whole world seems to be participating. In fact, if the whole world would just grow up and quit pretending, we'd be in a lot better shape.

Obama and his administration are just one big down-the-rabbit-hole hallucination of which, unfortunately, we're all a part.

John Bolenbaugh is the messenger, and I see the video as appropriate to the issue. It exposes the fact that Enbridge does not clean up there mess and indeed have washed their hands of the oil spill and the victims they created. By not maintaining the pipeline properly and not addressing the leak in a timely manner they caused well over a million barrels of oil to spill into the Kalamazoo River. Now rather than taking responsibility for the spill they are leaving the people of Michigan to die from the toxic constituents of bitumen from Alberta Canada.and
