The Telegraph's Jeremy Warner:

"There is only one way of interpreting the set of fresh demands tabled by eurozone finance ministers last night in return for agreeing a new €130bn bailout for Greece – that they are now quite deliberately trying to push Greece out of the euro. All pretence at European solidarity has been abandoned, to be replaced by the vengeance of Shylock….

"To push Greece out is of course the right approach for all. There is now no chance whatsoever of Greece making it in the eurozone. Economically and politically, the country is in meltdown.

"Nobody in their right mind would invest in Greece right now, knowing that at any moment Greece might leave the euro and that overnight, they will therefore lose half to two thirds of their money. Richer Greeks have adopted the same view. They are all getting their money out as fast as they can, as those of us who have been gazumped in the London property market by Greeks bearing piles of wonga know only too well…."

Most of the people here probably read Arts & Letters Daily anyway, but there was a good article featuring Peter Thiel posted today with a lot of quotable lines:

"There are ways that the government is working far less well than it used to. [T]he Golden Gate Bridge ... was built ... in the 1930s in about three and a half years. They’re currently building an access highway on one of the tunnels that feeds into the bridge, and it will take at least six years to complete."

"...no one at a senior level in the Administration even thinks about the question of technology."

" I think the politicization of science—where a lot of scientists have to write grant applications, be subject to peer review, and have to get all these people to buy in—all this has been toxic, because the skills that make a great scientist and the skills that make a great politician are radically different. There are very few people who are both great scientists and great politicians."

Eh, it's all quotable:

The Federal Reserve secretly selected a handful of banks to bid for debt securities acquired by taxpayers in the U.S. bailout of American International Group Inc., and the rest of Wall Street is wondering what happened to the transparency the central bank said it was committed to upholding.

“The exclusivity by which the process has shut out smaller dealers is a little un-American,” said David Castillo, head of sales and trading at broker Further Lane Securities LP in San Francisco, who said he would have liked to participate. “It seems odd that if you want to get the best possible price that it wouldn’t be open to anyone who wants to put in the most competitive bid.”

"The Saturday interview: Stuart Hall"

"Stuart Hall – godfather of multiculturalism and one of the UK's leading cultural theorists – is more pessimistic about politics than he's been for 30 years. The left, he says, is in deep trouble"

"The left is in trouble. It's not got any ideas, it's not got any independent analysis of its own, and therefore it's got no vision. It just takes the temperature: 'Whoa, that's no good, let's move to the right.' It has no sense of politics being educative, of politics changing the way people see things."

"The institutions of the old welfare state have already been "hollowed out. This is what Blair discovered – you don't need to have a fight about privatisation, you just have to erode the distinction between public and private.""

"Europe Cold, Snow: More Ahead!"

"What had been a relatively benign winter, generally speaking, in Europe has taken a sharp turn the past few weeks

It started with heavy snow around January 24 during the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. Now, an extended period of cold and heavy snow has plagued particularly eastern and southern Europe, claiming at least 400 lives, according to the Associated Press. Villages have been isolated by heavy snow in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Italy, and Turkey, among other areas. Flooding has also turned destructive in parts of Bulgaria and Greece.

"As we sprinted across Moammar Gadhafi's front lawn, we had to swerve to avoid the camels.

It was a bizarre obstacle course: dozens of the ungainly creatures, sitting, standing, and yes, fornicating.

It was December, 2004. Our media bus holding a dozen journalists, cameramen and photographers had been delayed after taking a wrong turn on the way in from the Tripoli Airport. Then-prime minister Paul Martin was already in the Bedouin tent inside the compound that the Libyan leader still calls home. If we didn't hustle, we'd miss the one photo-op: a brief handshake.

As we jumped off the bus, Alphee Moreau, the PMO's advance man at the time, shouted: "Run! Run! Be careful, the camels are dangerous!"

Jet-lagged and culture shocked, we giggled in spite of ourselves as we closed in on the tent. There, in a dimly-lit and incense-clouded corner, was the man of the hour, resplendent in robes and his trademark hat. He was shaking hands with our pale-faced Canadian leader."

"Environmentalists hailed FirstEnergy’s decision."
...-

"FirstEnergy closing 6 coal-fired power plants"

"FirstEnergy Corp. on Thursday announced it is retiring six coal-fired power plants, including four in Ohio, because of stricter federal anti-pollution rules.

The six older and dirtier plants will be closed by Sept. 1.

“It was a tough decision,” said Charles D. Lasky, vice president of fossil fleet operations for FirstEnergy Generation Corp.

The announcement makes FirstEnergy one of the first American utilities to close aging, polluting power plants in the wake of tighter federal clean-air rules finalized last month. Closings at other utilities are expected in the coming weeks.

FirstEnergy had been keeping a close eye on proposed federal rules on mercury, heavy metals and air toxics from coal-burning power plants for years, Lasky said.

The new rules provided FirstEnergy with “sufficient certainty” to proceed with the closings, he said."

"Snow in Europe cuts off tens of thousands"

"Snow drifts reaching up to rooftops kept tens of thousands of villagers prisoners in their own homes Saturday as the death toll from Europe's big freeze rose past 550.

More heavy snow fell on the Balkans and in Italy, while the Danube river, already closed to shipping for hundreds of kilometres (miles) because of thick ice, froze over in Bulgaria for the first time in 27 years.

Montenegro's capital of Podgorica was brought to a standstill by snow 50 centimetres (20 inches) deep, a 50-year record, closing the city's airport and halting rail services to Serbia because of an avalanche.

Eight more people were reported to have died in Romania, taking the toll for the country to 65, three in Serbia, one in the Czech Republic and one in Austria."

The cbc twitter lady is trying to change history now . She is trying to say that Allan Rock never said that as far as he was concerned , only the police and military should have guns . She even managed to find a copy of a speech he made where he never said it . Theres probably millions of speeches where Allan Rock never said something , but whatever . I watched and heard him say it . He said it live in a scrum . I guess it's a pretty safe challenge saying prove it with a 17 year old 2 minute video tape but thats how the nice cbc twitter lady plays the game . I can still smell the fumes from his flowery speech . I can still hear the arrogance in his voice .

Interpol Arrests Saudi Journalist In Malaysia Wanted For Insulting “Prophet” Mohammed On Twitter, Faces Death Sentence…

(Guardian) — Interpol has been accused of abusing its powers after Saudi Arabia used the organisation’s red notice system to get a journalist arrested in Malaysia for insulting the Prophet Muhammad.

Police in Kuala Lumpur said Hamza Kashgari, 23, was detained at the airport “following a request made to us by Interpol” the international police cooperation agency, on behalf of the Saudi authorities.

Kashgari, a newspaper columnist, fled Saudi Arabia after posting a tweet on the prophet’s birthday that sparked more than 30,000 responses and several death threats. The posting, which was later deleted, read: “I have loved things about you and I have hated things about you and there is a lot I don’t understand about you … I will not pray for you.”

More than 13,000 people joined a Facebook page titled “The Saudi People Demand the Execution of Hamza Kashgari”.

Clerics in Saudi Arabia called for him to be charged with apostasy, a religious offence punishable by death. Reports suggest that the Malaysian authorities intend to return him to his native country.

Kashgari’s detention has triggered criticism by human rights groups of Malaysia’s decision to arrest the journalist and of Interpol’s cooperation in the process.

88% of people think there's SOME bias in the media...and 67% think there's quite a bit...you don't think the outright false reporting they've given 'bama, the 'occupiers' and radical islam means anything, do you ?

http://newsbusters.org/blogs/brent-baker/2012/02/11/pew-record-high-67-see-political-bias-news-media#ixzz1m7jlFCmy

The downward slide of media credibility continues. A Pew survey released a few days ago found 67 percent of Americans see “a great deal” or “fair amount” of “political bias” in the news media, a record high for the poll by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press which pegged the level at 63 percent just four months ago. Specifically:

Currently, 37 percent of Americans say there is a great deal of bias in news coverage and 30 percent say there is a fair amount of bias. Far fewer see not too much bias (21 percent) or none at all (10 percent). The percentage saying there is a great deal of bias has increased six points, from 31 percent to 37 percent, since 2008.
