Darn. I've completed the test multiple times now, but when I click "next" under "How Thick Is Your Bubble" it just…hangs. Anyone else?

Maybe the server is labouring under an SDA-alanche.

I scored 17 out of 20 , but had to fib a bit about eating in an American Steakhouse .... I ate in a Canadian one so I answered yes.

Posted by: Arnie Madsen at January 28, 2012 12:57 AM

@Arnie I had to really cheat and count having a bagel at the TGI Fridays on a layover in Winnipeg's airport as having eaten at one to get my 8, even. Shh, don't tell anyone.

Posted by: DSV at January 28, 2012 5:57 AM

I have no bubble. Is that good or bad?

Posted by: denis at January 28, 2012 6:31 AM

I scored between 13 and 16 (not quite sure how the scoring works). Whenever Oprah comes on TV I leave the room. Have no idea about the movie since the last movie I saw in a theater was Jurassic Park. Since I don't watch TV or have cable have no idea about NASCAR but did go to the Molson Indie in Vancouver twice. I must not be a very good member of the "cognitive elite" without a bubble.

Posted by: Loki at January 28, 2012 6:37 AM

17. Idon't even have a bubble!(whatever the frack that means).Guess I need to watch Oprah and participate in her queer agenda more?Ummmm.NOT

Posted by: Justthinkin at January 28, 2012 7:23 AM

Scored an 8 but as part of the explanation it claimed I scored between 9 and 12. Liberal math.

17, test told me to go visit the bubble, ummmm no thanks.

Posted by: paul in Mordor at January 28, 2012 7:40 AM

17 here. I guess I didn't get out much...

Posted by: TrueNorthist at January 28, 2012 7:48 AM

13 as well, but this quiz is NOT even remotely a valid cultural assessment. Instead, it is more like a parody of what the Left thinks American culture is.

Posted by: Mark Matis at January 28, 2012 7:53 AM

I had to turn 'cookies' on in my browser to get the results but that's to be expected with quizzes that carry your responses over from page to page...

apparently, with a 16, I "need to visit the bubble more often"...I think I like it quite well on the outside, in 'the mainstream' especially if it means I don't have to watch oprah...and I agree that the questions themselves are sort of 'classist' and little more than a list of 'redneck' stereotypes and moonbat icons...

yes, I rode on a bus...40 years ago...how does that equate to anything I've done or become since ?

Posted by: Bemused at January 28, 2012 8:05 AM

I have never watched Oprah and know nothing about NASCAR. I love my beer, but I don't drink mass market domestic brands. I have however served in the armed forces, worked in factories, had jobs that leave me tired at the end of the day, fished and hunted and don't know anyone who smokes. As a result of this I scored a 9.

I don't think the fishing and hunting is a good question to separate the red necks from the elite. The hunting could be driven pheasant on an estate or it could be jack lighting deer in Tennessee. Fishing could be fly fishing for trout in Wyoming or bass fishing in the back woods of Florida.

Posted by: minuteman at January 28, 2012 8:17 AM

Kate.

I feel as though I have been disfranchised by this test and should be graded on a curve.

A curvy 8 would be nice.

Posted by: Fearless Leader at January 28, 2012 8:17 AM

I got a "no bubble" score but I cheated a bit. For example, mass market beer in the last five years? Well, no beer at all in recent years, but over a lifetime I can match anybody gallon for gallon, vat for vat, mass market or anything else I fancied.
And i never had a pickup truck, but I gave myself a yes because I drove a Ford Ranchero when I lived in Sask. Come to think of it, living in Saskatchewan is a bubble breaker - that's a compliment, folks.

Posted by: wyatt ironbridge at January 28, 2012 8:27 AM

Posted by: susan at January 28, 2012 8:42 AM

13-16 here, no bubble.

Posted by: L.I.F.E at January 28, 2012 8:46 AM

8-is that good or bad? I am confused.

Posted by: suec at January 28, 2012 8:48 AM

The test seems to only want affirmation of ones affinity to stereotype of what Hollywood sees. Not one question about the root causes of the decline.

Posted by: Joseph at January 28, 2012 9:00 AM

Yeah, apparently I'm in the bubble, but not so deep I can't see out of it.

I dislike cheap beer and have a non-north american background which I think skews me into the bubble more than I really am based on 20 questions.

Interesting questions though.

Posted by: Fred2 at January 28, 2012 9:19 AM

How endearing: Having scored between 9 and 12 (I got a 9), I've been told that " ... even if you're part of the new upper class, you've had a lot of exposure to the rest of America."

See, I'm open, tolerant, and inclusive -- "exposure to the rest of America" -- so what's my prize?

Posted by: batb at January 28, 2012 9:22 AM

15 for me!! No bubble, no trouble.

And I need to ask a@c: first, I hope you are not drinking beer and hunting in your F150 at the same time, and second, what the h-e-duble hockey sticks you doin' up at 3.39 am?
'Round here it's barely light enough to shoot. And when you put your beer down, it's too dark to find it back...

Posted by: bethesdaguy at January 28, 2012 9:22 AM

5 for me - would have been worse except for my early days when I worked in a mine and smelter for INCO. Must watch NASCAR and eat in crappy chain restaurants more often.

Posted by: John at January 28, 2012 9:34 AM

I scored 6, but, even though I don't actually “do” what a lot of this quiz seems to relegate to “another America” (I think hunting, fishing, and pickups are A-OK), I think like one—well, except for the Oprah and movie part! That said, I’m a total anomaly from most of my family and a large number of my friends. Fortunately, because I’m an observant (not a “social justice”) Christian, as well as pro-life, I also have many friends who share my outlook.

(I guess I cheated on the quiz too, re the smoking question: I said YES because I had tea with a favourite aunt, who smokes—and whom I see quite often—in her well-appointed living room . . . We also give her an ashtray—the only one we have left—and let her smoke in our living room, or anywhere else in our house.)

I don’t think the quiz measured what it says it does. I think it might have been better to gauge people’s reactions to the subject matter. I’m not working class, but I know and admire people who’ve done a lot of the things in the quiz, I guess because, (for me) by the grace of God, I’m a “flyover” kind of gal. I altogether agree with Charles Murray on what’s going on. But one doesn’t have to actually do the things in this quiz to revere “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”, free enterprise, and the greatness of the USA.

It’s the divisive, envy- and disdain-producing ideologies of “equality” and multiculturalism—both altogether poisonous and deconstructionist—that are tearing people and communities apart: the divide between the working and professional classes has largely been engineered by the rabidly secular, Alinskyite progressives in our educational (and many other) institutions, who’ve turned the rule of law upside down. And who’s fallen for this scam, hook, line, and sinker? Not “those stupid red necks”. No, it’s the “smarties” who’ve abandoned reason, truth, and justice. Ironic, eh?

God bless America!

Posted by: lookout at January 28, 2012 9:38 AM

14 for the Texas Canuck, although a few years ago I would have scored points for hunting and fishing. Seems like sailing has taken over my summers of late. I also like the local or craft beers for flavour as well as supporting the little guy but I will not turn away almost any beer offered.

Posted by: Texas Canuck at January 28, 2012 9:39 AM

8... although in the Canadian equivalent, say BPs instead of Applebees, it would have been higher. If I would have taken this 10 years ago, my score probably would have been closer to a 15. However, something happened since then - I grew up.

Posted by: Archie Bunker at January 28, 2012 9:47 AM

10, but I answered no for a couple that would be yes if the Canadian equivalents were included.

Posted by: SDH at January 28, 2012 9:54 AM

I scored 13. Never owned a pickup truck, but I have owned a van.

Posted by: Lloyd Fister at January 28, 2012 9:57 AM

Now, does a mandatory hardhat, steel-toes and work gloves constitute a "uniform"? I almost answered "yes" on that one.

Posted by: Lloyd Fister at January 28, 2012 10:00 AM

I would never be without my pickup (spent my career in a plant that built them), and I've shared moonshine in the parking lot of the Martinsville race, but I guess hunting fox and coyote from the back of a horse is a tad elitist.

Posted by: manversgwtw at January 28, 2012 10:04 AM

It's rigged. It didn't ask if I read Proust or grew my own food.

Posted by: rita at January 28, 2012 10:07 AM

Here's Murray's version of the quiz. It's better: somewhat more subtle; allows finer gradations of "hickitude"; etc.

Posted by: nick at January 28, 2012 10:19 AM

I got 14 because I don't care about NASCAR roundy-round racing. But I do know who Robby Gordon is due to his Monster Racing team in Baja.

So no, I have no bubble, thank Jebus... (oh wait...)

And no fair on Oprah. Yes, I have watched it thru, but.......over 10 years ago. Like Loki, when she's on, I find another room.

And that goes for her acolytes as well, that counselling whore, Dr Phil (repulsive) and Dr Oz.

Blech. Can't stand it when my wife says, "Well Dr Phil said...".....

60 seconds of my life I'll never get back... What a useless exercise.

Posted by: eastern paul at January 28, 2012 1:05 PM

that test was BS. For one thing, it relies on having close friends. As a real man who did not serve in the armed forces during a war, I have NO CLOSE friends. Thus my score was lowerr than it ought to have been.

Posted by: john s at January 28, 2012 1:18 PM

Also, where are the questions like: do you know how to operate a back-hoe? Or are you aware that a 'sled' is actually a snowmobile? or Have you ever siphoned fuel? If buying a pickup is a sign that you may be in touch with the working class then how come a truck driving red neck farmer like me got a 12? Jeesus mary and joseph! I am an elitist!

Posted by: john s at January 28, 2012 1:23 PM

Too old for the army, never been bored enough to watch Oprah, and my buddy voted for McGuinty and I still talk to him.

Posted by: Jamie MacMaster at January 28, 2012 1:24 PM

79 on Murray's version.

Growing up in a mining town will greatly affect your score.

14. Thank God for my humble background and that most of my friends still smoke.

Posted by: peterj at January 28, 2012 1:26 PM

11 for me. Serving in the Armed Forces and, naturally, wearing a uniform gave me two points. Dragging my backside out of an aeroplane after 11 hours gave another (sore) point... But NASCAR, crappy movies and Oprah? Weird survey.

Posted by: Aviator at January 28, 2012 2:46 PM

Posted by: Ghost of Ed at January 28, 2012 3:05 PM

Ghost of Ed :You forgot the beer.

Posted by: a@c at January 28, 2012 4:03 PM

3 out of 20, but it's my damned bubble, I'm very comfomfortable with it and intend to keep it that way thank you.

I think the hunting, fishing and pickup truck puts me on the so called mainstream scale. The fact that I don't owe a dime or any favors to anyone in the world, not so much.

"On a scale from 0 to 20 points, where 20 signifies full engagement with mainstream American culture and 0 signifies deep cultural isolation within the new upper class bubble, you scored between 0 and 4."

Posted by: Knight 99 at January 28, 2012 5:39 PM

5 out of 20

The quiz needs work. Its conclusions are flawed something fierce.

Posted by: Levf at January 28, 2012 7:11 PM

If watching Oprah qualify you for anything other than warm and fuzzy, the suggestion would be, you get some life before you kick the bucket.

Posted by: Lev at January 28, 2012 7:15 PM

So not watching Oprah or going to a silly movie or following NASCAR or drinking lousy beer means you live in a bubble? Bubble on I say. I'd rather scratch out both eyes than watch Oprah. Movies aren't worth going to see, NASCAR is boring and most domestic American beer is good only for those who don't want to get drunk but do want to go pee a lot.

Posted by: Joe at January 28, 2012 8:53 PM

6, and even then I kind of cheated because I've never lived in an American city (unless you say "well technically, the whole continent is 'America', including Mexico" - but really, who thinks like that?). At any rate I am clearly too toney for most of you and I hope you are grateful that I'm slumming here rather than at, say, HuffPo.

Posted by: Black Mamba REALLY doesn't want to hang out at HuffPo at January 28, 2012 9:14 PM

Posted by: Jamie MacMaster at January 28, 2012 11:17 PM

I got a 17. My husband owns a GMC truck like the one in the photo. And I'm watching the X-games tonight too, a local snowboarder has ridden to 2 gold medals in 2 days. At least my red neck is pretty.

Posted by: Karen at January 28, 2012 11:17 PM

Q: How is American beer like intercourse in a canoe?

A: They're both f*(king close to water.

Posted by: Black Mamba at January 28, 2012 11:20 PM

Went to the link with the book quiz and scored 47. That's probably more as a result of my growing up in a very small town and liking to eat at places like Denny's. Typical problems with a quiz where one attempts to sum incommesurate quantities. I scored 1 point for having watched an episdoe of Judge Judy all the way through. Anyway, it puts me more towards the redneck end of the spectrum which is where I figure I belong anyway.
