Is "For Legal Reasons" (the explanation for why comments were closed) the secular-humanist version of "Insh'Allah"?

Cowards.

It's a damned good thing comments are disabled, because I was going to hypothesize that a radical Muslim might have had something to do with the bomb threat, which is clearly Islamophobia, and I apologize to Richard Warman in advance.

This case is an excellent example of why we need capital punishment in this Country, for the honour of our Nation.

I have yet to see an enabled comments section in any major newspaper related to the Shafia trial.

Posted by: Mark at January 26, 2012 12:07 PM

I love how they have "honour killings" in quotes. Pretty much says it all, doesn't it?

Posted by: Johann at January 26, 2012 12:10 PM

Could be Shafia supporters, or it could be someone who wants to see them blown to hell. This trial, more than any since the Bernardo trial, Makes me wish we have the death penalty.

"comments disabled" means they already know what I think and don't care.

So I didn't read their article and give them a hit on their server. Because I already know what -they- think, and don't care.

Two solitudes.

In Islam these killings are legal. Muslims are feeling oppressed by the kuffars legal system of man made laws. They have to react, 'Slums gotta be 'Slums.

The Champ:

The death sentence is still out there. It just requires Mere Citizens to do the work that "Law Enforcement" and the "Legal System" refuse to do. After all, this whole trial is about the Religion of Peace enacting the death sentence for those who offended their sensibilities. If "Law Enforcement" and the "Legal System" are so willing to defer to them, how could they possibly do otherwise for Mere Citizens who only wish to enjoy their rights?

Although it is far better done the ranchers' way:
Shoot. Shovel. Shut up.

Our opaque unaccountable government and it's corrupt agents cannot be trusted with the responsibility of the power of imposing capital punishment.
It wouldn't be people like Stephen Harper with that power, it would be people like Dalton McGuinty and Allison Redford, not to forget the kind of cops who tazered Robert Dziekański to death at Vancouver International or framed David Milgaard for murder in Saskatoon.

In the history of the world, how many times has a telephoned bomb threat been real? Do people really go to the trouble of building an explosive device, secreting it inside the target structure, and then phone the police to warn them?

Posted by: Dan S. at January 26, 2012 1:04 PM

At least someone finally made them feel at home here in Canada.

That bomb threat should have made allot of Liberals happy. Save for the bloody carnage afterwards, it must have been a romantic moment for the crazy little lovebirds.

Posted by: Knight 99 at January 26, 2012 1:10 PM

Dan S - The Tenerife airport disaster (KLM 4805 and PanAm 1736) with 583 total fatalities was indirectly the result of a bomb threat at the Gran Canaria Airport, which was preceded by a phone call. The flights were re-routed to a smaller airport, which ultimately resulted in the human error induced crash.

Posted by: Canuckguy at January 26, 2012 1:52 PM

As far as I know there's no such thing as "honour killings"in a civilized society. That the term is used is asinine to begin with, there is no honour in killing.

If people want to drag their archaic beliefs to this country and practice them they will have to be treated as criminals when they act on them.

This case is one where our justice system has an opportunity to send a clear message should they be convicted of murder.

Posted by: Liz J at January 26, 2012 1:52 PM

Don't prejudge - it was only one threat! See, that's the influence of the "moderates" we keep hearing about.

Posted by: christopher pool at January 26, 2012 2:23 PM

At sentencing the presiding judge should just go ahead and invoke the death penalty.

Once the emperor(Capital Punishment) is exposed perhaps we could have a mature debate in this country about the merits of CP in certain cases such as this.

I won't hold my air.

Posted by: old duffer at January 26, 2012 2:32 PM

At sentencing the presiding judge should just go ahead and invoke the death penalty.

Which would trigger a mistrial and necessitate rerunning the whole dog & pony show at taxpayer's expense.
I'm for justice and believe that justice calls for the death penalty in cases like this(I also believe in the deterrent effect); but abuse of power, process, and 'mission creep' are hallmarks of the decadent society we inhabit today so NO I would not entrust the current governments with such power especially since no moves are being made to hold government and it's agents more accountable before we give them more power.

Given convictions on first degree, 25 year minimum life sentence. Women are rarely found guilty of first degree but this chicky is a special case.

The idea behind calling it an "Honour Killing" is that the killing must take place to preserve the family honour.
What needs to be done is to convince these people that a virtual killing is enough to satisfy cultural demands, such as what some orthodox Jews do when one of their children converts to Christianity.
The Jewish patriarch says, "You are dead to me" and the family then has a symbolic funeral with grieving and never speaks the name of that virtually killed relative again.

Or they could do what the Japanese used to do and say, “I cannot live without honour” and commit seppuku.
Of course the “death before dishonour” question is a little harder when it’s yourself who is going to do the dying instead of someone else...

Posted by: Oz at January 26, 2012 4:15 PM

You are absolutely right Knight99, but just remember, it is the Harper Regime not government.

Posted by: The Champ at January 26, 2012 4:25 PM

i bet they walk ....

Posted by: spike at January 26, 2012 4:27 PM

Actually, Dan S., that was the standard practice during the Northern Irish rebellion against the Protestants. The bombs were indeed real, and the calls were made in time to allow the people to be evacuated. There was at least one time they did NOT place the call in time, but for the most part they did their best. Even the Omagh bomb was called in well before the explosion.

Posted by: Mark Matis at January 26, 2012 4:45 PM

It is interesting that the article does not indicate which side the perpetrator of the bomb scare supported, the court or the defendants. Given the level of tolerance the G&M has for minority groups, we may only surmise based on the fact that it was the prosecution's summation that was disrupted, not the defence.

Posted by: Aviator at January 26, 2012 5:03 PM

Nah..

Regarding 'Religion of Peace', I note that an athiest/secular group attempting to host a speaking engagement in Britain, chickened out when a young Islamist brandishing (the horror!) a video camera threatend the audience by filming them and saying, "we know where you live".

On a better note however, you may enjoy a wonderful debate titled "Is Islam a Religion of Peace" - an 'Intelligence Squared' series that is very good. At the end, more of the audience were converted to the viewpoint that it is NOT a religion of peace.

Even if they all get life in prison (not) it would still be luxury living compared to the rat holes they come from. 3 good meals a day (plus snacks of course) and all the recreation they can handle. Their own little Mosque will be a pre-requsite of course. Meals will be all Halal and the prison will have to adapt to their new guests and all their special needs. The cheap alternative is to deport them but that is too logical.

One thing no one is talking about, and will determine the outcome of this trial, are there muslims on the jury? If there's a single muslim on the jury, it's almost a guaranteed mis-trial. That, my friends, is how sharia creeps into our justice system.

I keep trying to figure out what the virgins get out of this deal. That's one sh*tload of virgins. Even the mormons can't handle that. Wonder if the HRC in the United Nations has the answer. Enquiring minds want to know.

Posted by: peterj at January 27, 2012 2:02 AM

Bottom line is we have few choices left down the road because this is only going to get worse:

-Start having our fair share of kids so we can stop importing "social safety net contributors". Remember, apart from the Muslim world, there is little left to pick from...Every western nation on Earth has the same problem: Declining tax generating births. We can't expect boat loads of Polish, Dutch or British immigrants anymore...Those days are long gone.

-Reduce the size of Government/make Government deficits illegal except to cover for defense or domestic major natural disasters (Shoveling a snow storm in Toronto does not count).
Statistically, in developed countries, there is lesser birth in countries that have the most Government (Socialism) with Russia being at the top. Communism scarred that country for generations to come proving that "Government" is unnatural at it's core. It is the antithesis of "freedom". Of all the developed Western countries, the USA, still the freest, has one of the best nativity performance reinforcing the fact.

- Reduce/eliminate tax funded gold pensions to public workers...We don't care how they do it because assuming the "Government deficit is illegal" law.

The population lives longer and has fewer children...The math is easy...

Thank you professor Mark Stein.

@ coach:
I came here to ask the very same question:"are there muslims on the jury?"

There are some Muslims(very few mind you) who would gladly throw the book at this murderous family.

Posted by: Canuckguy at January 27, 2012 1:58 PM

My guess of the trial outcome:
At least the father will be found guilty of 1st degree murder. The other two 2nd degree.
(But I am hoping the jury has the smarts and guts to declare all three guilty of 1st degree murder.)

Let's have some others take a stab at it, I am keeping track and will post later when the sentences are passed.

Posted by: Canuckguy at January 27, 2012 2:05 PM

My guess is father gets first, son second and mother gets off.

I wouldn't be surprised if the jury still has "reasonable doubt" about this case, as modern jurors I believe have become neurotic. Reference Kasey Anthony.
