Froma Harrop wears two hats: She's the head of the Civility Project and she's a political columnist. While wearing the second hat last summer, she wrote this:
Make no mistake: The tea party Republicans have engaged in economic terrorism against the United States -- threatening to blow up the economy if they don't get what they want. And like the al-Qaida bombers, what they want is delusional: the dream of restoring some fantasy caliphate in which no one pays taxes, while the country is magically protected from foreign attack and the elderly get government-paid hip replacements.
Yesterday, the Daily Show's John Oliver tried to help her see the light (link for our American friends). No luck. Absolutely no luck. Ms. Harrop claims she was in on the joke. Many think she was not.
Posted by Robert at January 13, 2012 7:00 PMI almost got to the end, they got on the elevator and I stopped it.
I doubt that she ever admits her speech was uncivil or that she can ever grasp that the endlessly increasing deficit spending is unsustainable and will lead to the country's economy "blowing up" as she put it.
I didn't think the clip was funny.
Posted by: Oz at January 13, 2012 8:01 PMThat has to be staged, nobody is that stupid.
Posted by: multirec at January 13, 2012 8:05 PMI envy multirec, he doesn't know many people on the left.
Posted by: SDH at January 13, 2012 8:08 PMIs she related to Debbie Whatswiththehair Schlitz?
Posted by: Brian Mallard at January 13, 2012 8:09 PMMultirec, sorry but yes people can be that stupid. "Economic terrorism" she says, but the real economic terrorism is bloated government spending what it does not have. Actually imitating the hype of the Left, one could call that generational terrorism, since it is economic terrorism against future generations. I am ceased being surprised by the outrageous and blatant stupidity of the Left, to say nothing of their lies and total disconnect with reality.
Posted by: Alain at January 13, 2012 8:19 PMShe Is a leftist therefor above reproach. All others are suspect unless fellow Marxists. Since she cannot be wrong anything she advocates is true, thus to speak against it is uncivil & evil. Dialogue to these folks only means their side.
Posted by: Revnant Dream at January 13, 2012 8:30 PMThat was funny.Thanks.It also shows that sometimes the Daily Show can be very good. Colbert, not so much.
Posted by: wallyj at January 13, 2012 8:33 PM"The Left's Missing Self-Awareness Gene"
Is that similar to the Right's missing Other-Awareness Gene?
You literally cannot communicate with these people, because the words have no set universally applicable meaning to them.
We can't cooperate with them, communicate with them, and it's a wonder we live with them at all.
Seriously, when someone just lies to you and themselves constantly, that's a problem that's not going to be solved in an amicable civil fashion.
If the Left is starting to get upset that we’re talking to them the way they’ve been talking to us for decades, I can hardly wait until we get tired of talking to them at all.
If this is the best we can come up with to amuse ourselves, we need to get lives. Real soon.
Posted by: Howie at January 13, 2012 9:04 PMSorry, I meant to post that on the LPC convention thread.
Posted by: Howie at January 13, 2012 9:10 PM"Is that similar to the Right's missing Other-Awareness Gene?"
Not sure anon...is that the gene that's responsible for conservatives giving more to charity than liberals?
Posted by: Matt Hillier at January 13, 2012 9:14 PMIf she's "in on the joke", then why would she really have to explain her position?
Or perhaps those ideas came to her after the interview was over.
Posted by: mitchel44 at January 13, 2012 9:17 PMIs the Daily Show thinning the herd? I'd love to know the back story on that interview.
Posted by: marco at January 13, 2012 9:27 PMThis explains a lot.
Some of you will recall that on July 8, 1947,
a little more than 64 years ago,
numerous witnesses claim that
an Unidentified Flying Object, (UFO),
with five aliens aboard,
crashed onto a sheep and mule ranch
just outside Roswell , New Mexico .
This is a well known incident
that many say has long been covered-up
by the U.S. Air Force,
as well as other Federal Agencies
and Organizations.
However,
what you may NOT know is that
in the month of April, year 1948,
nine months after the historic day,
the following people were born:
Barrack Obama Sr.
Albert A. Gore, Jr.
Hillary Rodham
William J. Clinton
John F. Kerry
Howard Dean
Nancy Pelosi
Dianne Feinstein
Charles E. Schumer
Barbara Boxer
Joe Biden
This is the consequence
of aliens breeding
with sheep and jack-asses.
I truly hope this bit of information
clears up a lot of things for you.
It certainly did for me.
And now you can stop wondering why
they support the bill
to help all Illegal Aliens

You may wish to check the birthdates of the luminaries you posted on your faux humour piece.
Not too many born in '48

Got it in a email and thought it was cute. Admit to not checking it for substance or anything at all. Bad dog.
Great post, Robert. Thanks for sharing something I won't soon forget.
Harrop apparently lives in a reverse black hole that no light of self-awareness can ever penetrate. Her whole world-view is a fabricated collage of caricatures and shadow puppets, held together by a diamond-like sense of her own rightness. I felt my mind straining on her behalf, hearing her answers, seeing the incomprehension in her eyes. Wow. Just wow. I pray I never find myself as deluded as this woman. How on Earth could you ever snap yourself out of it?
I don't want to sound condescending towards a grown, successful adult, but I genuinely pity Harrop. She's so sincerely blinded by her hatred and even gets physically agitated at the mere mention of the debt ceiling negotiations and the Tea Party.
You couldn't have scripted a more perfect illustration of cognitive dissonance. Kudos to the "interviewer" for being so very sharp and riding this one out to the very end. Give this man a frickin' Emmy already.
Posted by: Taylor at January 13, 2012 11:13 PMI've read quite enough of FH on Rasmussen's site. Will not click on link. "Delusional" would be charitable.
Posted by: Another Calgary Marc at January 13, 2012 11:27 PMPersonally, I find this kind of humour really tedious. There may be one joke in there and it's dragged out for 5 minutes.
Daily Show viewers must be rather dim-witted or something.
Give me English humour any day.
Posted by: chip at January 13, 2012 11:56 PMI nominate Froma Harrop for leadership of the Liberal Party, the NDP, the Green Party and the Bloc Quebecois. All leadership positions to be held simultaneously and for life by this amazing woman.
Posted by: stevesmith at January 14, 2012 12:00 AMI wouldn't be surprised if Miss Harrop was fooled. Anyone who writes things like "The tea party Republicans have engaged in economic terrorism against the United States -- threatening to blow up the economy if they don't get what they want. And like the al-Qaida bombers, what they want is delusional..." is not in full possession of a brain.
The second anyone spouts out such crap, give them the biggest smack-down they've ever had. Make them explain their rabid words and behaviour. If they don't stamp away crying, something is wrong.
Posted by: Osumashi Kinyobe at January 14, 2012 12:16 AMChip:
You're missing the bigger picture. During the Bush years, this type of piece would never have aired on the Daily Show - they were too busy bashing every living, breathing Republican.
But Bambam's probably having an LBJ moment.. "Damn, if I've lost Stewart, I've lost the Democrats".
Posted by: KevinB at January 14, 2012 12:17 AMWhy would she have been in on the joke? It makes her look (accurately, I'm sure) like an idiot and a hypocrite. I'd guess she's never watched The Daily Show and didn't know what kind of "interviews" they do, but had heard that it was left-sympatico, so she reckoned she was in for a tongue bath.
Civility Project forsooth. How insufferably grade-school-teachery. Totalitarian, too. Harrop needs people to be "civil" to her because she has no talent.
I would also like to take this opportunity to mock the name "Froma". That's not very civil of me, is it?
Posted by: Black Mamba at January 14, 2012 3:09 AMI'd like to hear more from her, she's a hoot! More interview/explanations I mean.
Good god though, not what she writes, I couldn't stand ten seconds of that.
Syndicated across the country? Amazing....
Posted by: eastern paul at January 14, 2012 6:33 AMmultirec, I have a good friend, a nurse, intelligent yet the most blind leftist you could meet. We were talking recently and I asked her how she felt about the auditor general's report on the debacle of McGuinty's economic performance. Her response was that McGuinty will cut spending this year and work hard to balance the budget.
When I mentioned that he hasn't cut spending in 8 years just raised taxes so why would he do it now. He just will, she said.
Today I see McLiar has just raised the taxes on liquor.
To me the left really is the definition of insanity.
Posted by: dave at January 14, 2012 8:58 AMSomething I learned very early in life: it is impossible to carry on a rational discussion with teenagers, drunks and liberals (although some teenagers and drunks are exceptions).
Liberal thinking, if it can be called that, is dominated entirely by emotion and self-righteousness. By their self definition, their intentions are "good" and therefore they can do no wrong, and since they can do no wrong they are by definition "good". Since they are "good", their intentions are by definition "good" -- yada, yada. Their thought process is effectively an emotional tautology.
I often wonder if smart guys like John Stewart reach a point where they know their leftist pals are all insane and that their policies are idiotic if not outright evil, want to cross the floor to something more sane and civil. Perhaps their careers are so committed to their left leanings that they can not afford to be honest for financial reasons. Sort of like politicians.
You would think that smart people would be able to see the difference between the the Tea Party and the OWS tribes. When the differences between left and right are so stark …. it's hard to not notice.
Posted by: Abe Froman at January 14, 2012 11:09 AMRobert (Robert from Vancouver, or elsewhere?, and if the former why not stick with one handle):
All praise for your thread title: Missing Self-Awareness Gene. This is approaching Kate-like brilliance.
It's good 'cos it really is true. As I pointed out on an earlier thread, I no longer refer to liberal hypocrisy, but self-deception, psychosis almost.
The other aspect of liberal mental illness is their almost universal proneness to comically disproportionate thinking which we see here in the term "economic terrorism". This is not much different than a five-year old thinking 5 pennies is more money than 1 quarter.
While critizing Israel, for example, for a "dispropoortionate response" to islmao-nazi terrorism, they will engage in comical disproportionality in comparing Gitmo to the Soviet Gulag.
VDH did a good piece recently in which he engaged in some self-assessment about whether conservatives had developed ODS. One of the tests was whether or not we had done a film fantasizing the assassination of Obama and won a Toronto Film Festival Award for it, as was the case with Bush-Hitler.
Finally, in contrast to the hysteria over Bush's Patriot Act (justified) we seem to see almost no self-awareness concerning the recently passed Military Defense Act, tho Naomi Wolf gets it!

I think they're fully commited to their "social justice" positions, it's just that they're reading the writing on the wall and starting to distance themselves from the looming failure of the current crop.
The know which way the wind is blowing.
All thta metaphoric prose about blowing stuff up one finds poliically offensive - man this bitch has no sense of toxic hypocrosy let alone self awaremenss of her own devolved intellect.
Posted by: Occam at January 14, 2012 2:00 PMHonestly, I began to think that Froma was being played by an actress. That She was actually playing Herself is quite astounding. But, of course, the truth means nothing to “progressives” like Her—even when it socks Her, hard, right in the kisser. Yikes and Kyrie eleison.
