Can the Liberals reinvent themselves ... with Sheila Copps or Bob Rae as leader?? Adler chimes in and hilarity ensues!
Never before in history could a pillar of support be more aptly described as a toothpick. Even Coyne isn't enthusiastic.
Still, some are optimistic that enough hyphenated identity groups can be strung together for another grasp at power! Note: While watching the video at the last link, does this keep running through your head? Could someone encourage Ezra Levant to interview/debate this pair? Please!!!

Update 2: Hilarious things seen at "#LPC12":

It won't be long before they drag the Shawinigan Strangler onto the podium where he will tell them "dat da Canadiens isn't not believing dem, dat day needs to provide da proof dat day are da onlys to run da Canada" Martin will follow that tired old routine up with his air guitar tribute to Rub & Tug Jack, red condoms will be handed out, Strawneck will do her drunken table dance, then they will spend two hours congradulating each other on their new found direction.
Posted by: kevin at January 13, 2012 3:05 PMIf it ain't the blast-from-the-past Sheila Copps it will probably be Mike Crawley. He would be such a good fit for the Liberals. He used to head up a wind power company in Ontario, living off subsidies extorted from Ontario taxpayers. In others words a rent-seeker extraordinaire. You can't get more Liberal than that.

~Wente
I’d almost like to see them get their way on that because, to put it simply, gay men are homos because they like men and lesbians are homos because they hate men.
Hardly anyone predicted that technology and globalization would have such dramatically disparate effects – enriching some people, while dislocating so many others.
How might society mitigate these flaws in capitalism in ways that are politically acceptable?
~Wente
The ‘dislocating’ didn’t happen because of flaws in capitalism.
It happened because of socialist unionization, socialist regulation, and taxation for socialist programs which forced capital to flee.
Even Paul Martin, Liberal Finance Minister and One-time Prime Minister, had over half of his Canadian Steamship Line vessels flagged with Liberian flags to avoid taxes, regulations, and unionization that his own Liberal party imposed on anything Canadian.
Chris Kukucha said prospects of even a modest revival in Alberta are slim.
“I do know that the federal Liberals have very limited hope for Alberta outside of Edmonton, and that’s a stretch,” he said, noting that young Albertans still bring up the Trudeau-era National Energy Program as an example of the party’s perceived antipathy toward Alberta.
I don’t know why the NDP did so well in so many Alberta ridings while the Liberals did so badly.
It seems few people remember that Trudeau had a minority government, that the NDP invented PETROCAN, and that the NDP should be held equally responsible with the Liberals for the National Energy Program.
Both the Liberals and the NDP, had they won any of the last 3 elections with a majority or as a minority supported by the other, would have implemented an NEPII in the name of the environment.
I listened to that video Robert. I'm not sure what it was about exactly but it was funny. I mean here you have some "vp of policy" for the Liberal party and she can't really give a straight answer on anything to softball questions about nothing. Answers like "well sometimes we need to be a melting pot and other times we don't" are exactly the kind of stuff that tells me this party is going nowhere. Woman you are preaching to liberals and being asked questions by a liberal and you skate around like you're Paul Martin ducking questions about the sponsorship scandal. If this is one of their policy people the future looks bright my friends.
Posted by: james at January 13, 2012 3:51 PMMy political "spidey senses" are telling me that the Libs are experimenting with the idea of another upcoming "coronation" a la academia -- this time it's the lowly proleterian student protestor Bob Rae, instead of the uppity Count Michael Ignatieff.
The indicator is the official voicebox of the Left -- the CBC -- which is developing a revisionist history about "Bob Rae as Canadian political martyr", specificially in reference to the CBC's breaking story yesterday that Rae was spied on by the RCMP back in the 1960's during his student activism years (http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/story/2012/01/12/rae-rcmp-file.html).
Of course the CBC would never mention that Bob Rae was later chosen to be a member of SIRC (Security Intelligence Review Committee) -- the watchdog over our new modern civilian spy agency, CSIS. And in that capacity Rae had access -- WITHOUT RESTRICTION -- to Canada's Top Secret spy activities. SIRC reviews from 1997 to 2000 were in fact co-authored by Bob Rae -- complaints against CSIS and recommendations about how our spy agency should function were either accepted or rejected with Rae's personal approval during that period.
Given his past radical history (including NDP public support for practically every Communist revolutionary org during the Cold War, not to mention extremists in the Middle East such as the PLO etc.), how Bob Rae could ever be entrusted with our most sensitive State secrets is beyond me. But it should be interesting to see how the CBC continues to spin his "proletarian" past re: our nasty RCMP spies, especially since Rae later literally "worked for the man" himself: Security Intelligence Review Committee.
(P.S.: Check out the SIRC reviews when Bob Rae worked for the man -- interesting to note how many people with past extremist connections were allowed into Canada or given security clearance in classified positions because SIRC determined that they apparently "did not pose a threat to the security of Canada", 1997-2000. The following year we had 9/11, followed by the Khadr family, the L.A. bomber, Toronto 18, etc., etc., and the rest is history).

Relativism and doublespeak have resulted in there being no high ground for the Liberals to claim. Harper has claimed and pre-empted all the level ground. So the Liberals are left scrambling for any slippery slope.
If the Liberals are going to pull Sheila out of the embalming fluid, I demand that we get back John Crosbie. He could be Minister of Really Old People. Good lines like "Drug profits, Sheila?"

The LPC is not faring well. They have a long uphill trek to get even close to becoming a legitimate threat to Canada. They still have the media in their pocket, but their people are not happy. Copps and Rae will not help at all.
This gay divorcee fiasco is not helping either. People are seeing it as more of the same old, same old.Rae's now trying to stick a race card into the issue. That will not work either.

Does anyone other than the media worry that people who came to Canada to get married can't get a divorce back home because back home doesn't recognize their marriage? And they can't get a divorce in Canada because they are not Canadian residents. Sucks to be gay.

I found that video quite by accident. It was fairly recent so I decided to reference it in conjunction with the linked articles.
I do not at all besmirch the genuineness of the two Liberals being interviewed but their talking points are so emblematic of the problem facing their party today. They're only comfortable roaming in a world of generalities.
What hasn't yet sunk in for this pair, and most all Liberals I'd suggest, is that the Conservatives have outflanked them on most all "liberal" positions. If I'm not mistaken, MP James Moore was instrumental in getting the Tories much more involved & entrenched in the so-called minority communities in Canada's big cities. The Liberals, on the other hand, absolutely took this support for granted and assumed that their long-standing narrative that "Conservatives hate non-white people" would keep working for another millennium. News Flash: It hasn't! That's a big reason why the Conservatives were able to make such significant progress in ridings in the likes of Toronto & Vancouver.
Getting back to that pair, if they were ever forced to talk specifics about their policies, they'd quickly find that most Canadians don't support them. Be it Universal Daycare or Ultra-Green policies, they're failures and Stéphane Dion dramatically proved that.
However, Conservatives and conservatives should not take anything for granted, for no political party in a democracy is likely to last forever but Harper's slow, gentle approach to moving the country's agenda slightly to the right has proven to be a winner in Canada's elections.

I know, but after 44 years of seeing and feeling one piece of socialist policy after another foisted on this country it is hard to accept the "slow, gentle approach", especially for those of us that are getting a little long in the tooth. However I do realize that, like a large ship, the course change of a nation has to be slower or risk an upset.

Ken, I agree with you completely: frustrating!
But Harper knew long ago that the bulk of the MSM is his absolute enemy (h/t for the Republicans btw) so he understood that the only way to turn the ship around was ever so slowly.

Posted by: Plaindrifter at January 14, 2012 12:45 AMIt doesn't really matter what the Liberals do for the next couple of years. The fact is, if the Conservatives screw up badly, the Liberals will have a shot at forming the next government. Even if they somehow pick Kim Justin-il as leader, and still haven't repaid the Adscam loot as promised.
Remember that in the 1990s the Conservatives were pronounced dead more often than Kenny McCormick. Yet here they are with a majority today. If they mess up, there is a strong enough chance that the Liberals will be able to do the same thing. Don't say I didn't warn you!
