Climategate 2.0

Another miracle just happened!

Breaking news: FOIA 2011 has arrived !

This archive contains some 5.000 emails picked from keyword searches. A few remarks and redactions are marked with triple brackets.

/// The IPCC Process ///

<1939> Thorne/MetO:

Observations do not show rising temperatures throughout the tropical
troposphere unless you accept one single study and approach and discount a wealth of others. This is just downright dangerous. We need to communicate the uncertainty and be honest. Phil, hopefully we can find time to discuss these further if necessary [...]

<3066> Thorne:

I also think the science is being manipulated to put a political spin on it which for all our sakes might not be too clever in the long run.

<1611> Carter:

It seems that a few people have a very strong say, and no matter how much talking goes on beforehand, the big decisions are made at the eleventh hour by a select core group.

<2884> Wigley:

Mike, The Figure you sent is very deceptive [...] there have been a number of dishonest presentations of model results by individual authors and by IPCC [...]

<4755> Overpeck:

The trick may be to decide on the main message and use that to guid[e] what’s included and what is left out.

More at the link. and obviously, this is developing... and what is being gleaned already looks to be damning.

BBC -

What appears to be a new batch of emails and other documents from the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit has been released.

Contents include more than 5,000 emails and other documents, some relating to work with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

A similar release in 2009 triggered the "ClimateGate" affair and accusations of fraud that inquiries later dismissed.

Now, as then, the release comes shortly before the annual UN climate summit.

The university has yet to comment on the document cache, which is posted on a Russian server.

Note, the file was released at around 4am this morning, so a lot is still to come out. And there are an additional 220,000 emails that remain behind password protection - for now.

Update: Anthony Watts is digging into the emails now and has found some fun stuff.

Looks promising . . . Is this Climategate 2.0 or 3.0?

Oh, oh, Al, the jig is up.

that's funny I had a spelling error whilst indicating a grammatical error. Karma......

What fun! Therefore, will Michael Mann still be suing Dr. Tim Ball and the Frontier Centre?

Thanks, fixed.

Between this and Sandusky Penn State will probably never recover it's former glory...

"A similar release in 2009 triggered the "ClimateGate" affair and accusations of fraud that inquiries later dismissed."

I see a new inquiry, same as the old inquiry.

He who laughs last laughs best.

Now let's all point our fingers and laugh at the IPCC climate liars standing there with their pants down!

Liars and cheats, thieves and manipulators usually get caught, only by then their children and associates have learned to be liars and thieves also so it happens again. Fat Als father was a crooked cattle man and he taught Al, the hotel pervert good, hopefully a few more of our consensus media like Deborah Yedlin wake up and drive the spike through the heart of this SCAM. Look at he finances of the western world and see if environMENTALism has been beneficial to anyone, but the environcrooks.

If an E-Mail between oh say Sarah Palin and Rick Perry was as damning as these brief excerpts the front pages of every major newspaper would be alive with Pearl Harbor sized headlines.

Meanwhile despite all the revelations...the scam rolls on unabashed...

The TV was working on CTV NEWS,in the next room, when I distinctly heard a commercial seeking donations for some "same the Polar Bear habitat" NGO.

These crooks are persistant as face flys...with the nerve of a canal horse....

sasquatch.....that would be Coca-Cola,the same a&^holes who put polars and pengies together in their Xmas ads. That's why I don't buy ANY crap from Coke or their affiliates anymore.
Oh...and BTW...NGO is an oxymoron. They all suck the gubermint teat.

Posted by: Justthinkin at November 22, 2011 10:27 AM

From the documents:
"I agree with the importance of extreme events as foci for public and governmental opinion [...] ‘climate change’ needs to be present in people’s
daily lives. They should be reminded that it is a continuously occurring and evolving phenomenon"

"Having established scale and urgency, the political challenge is then to turn this from an argument about the cost of cutting emissions – bad politics – to one about the value of a stable climate – much better politics. [...] the most valuable thing to do is to tell the story about abrupt change as vividly as possible"

I've only read a portion of the document so far but it looks more damaging than climategate. Even after climategate there still remained a thin veneer that the scientists were doing actual science (but perhaps a bit over zealously). These new discussions reveal a blatant attempt to manipulate the public and the science to aid politicians in ramming through carbon pricing schemes. People do not like to be played for fools so it may be the final blow for the warmerists. Considering the Durban conference is right around the corner, it couldn't have happened at a better time.

It's going to take a long time before all the suckers start to 'unbelieve' the brain washing they've been getting for so long. Especially the school kids.

Politicians will be loath to give up whatever global warming taxes they have managed to invoke on their rapidly going broke constituents

Leftist Red-Green Grauniad on the offensive.

Grauniad is hacking & spitting ...

"Hacked climate science emails leaked"

"Last updated less than one minute ago"

"File containing 5,000 emails made available in an apparent attempt to repeat impact of 2009 release"

"In the new release a 173MB zip file called "FOIA2011" containing more than 5,000 new emails, was made available to download on a Russian server called Sinwt.ru today. An anonymous entity calling themselves "FOIA" then posted a link to the file on at least four blogs popular with climate sceptics – Watts Up With That, Climate Audit, TallBloke and The Air Vent. The same tactic was used in 2009 when the first 160MB batch of emails were released after being obtained – possibly illegally – from servers based at the University of East Anglia, where a number of the climate scientists involved were based.

One marked difference from the original 2009 release is that the person or persons responsible has included a message headed "background and context" which, for the first time, gives an insight into their motivations."

I'll take you up on that. I wager they will have an online story up within the week. They were VERY embarrassed last time. No, I don't work for the CBC and have no say on the decision. CBC sucks.

I would also say CBC puts up a SINGLE story, full of condescension and playing up the 'illegally hacked' aspect more than the embarrassment to the IPCC.

Posted by: grok at November 22, 2011 11:19 AM

If one reads the whole story at BBC a different view emerges. They obviously want to cast doubt on
the veracity and seriousness of the leaks.
I will not be able to judge what CBC says as I never watch them. I got tired of their misinformation a long time ago.
We can only hope that our Government stays far away from any climate agreement. A write in Campaign to our MP's before the SA conference should be started.
Let them know were each of us stand.

Posted by: melwilde at November 22, 2011 11:35 AM

Meanwhile, Real Climate's main story seems more focused on how the reader interprets their cool wordle:

"By the way, the phrase ‘ET’ in this context does not refer ‘extra-terrestrial’, and ‘AL’ is not a person, but these refer to the way of citing many scholars: ‘et al.‘"

Enlightening!

My old favorites:

I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline.

- doubts about whether the world really is heating up:

The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t. The CERES data published in the August BAMS 09 supplement on 2008 shows there should be even more warming: but the data are surely wrong. Our observing system is inadequate.

-Suppression of evidence:

Can you delete any emails you may have had with Keith re AR4?

-follow up:

(Which one of u assholes forgot to delete the rest of the data?>

How long will the CBC ignore the story???

Journalists have oversized egos so at this point even progressive journalists may be angry about being used, abused and embarrassed by people they trusted. I think there is a chance that some prominent pro-AGW journalists will be pissed off enough that you may see a green journalist-vs-green activist/scientist civil war.

Posted by: LC Bennett at November 22, 2011 12:12 PM

Evil and corruption for the good of the cause (faith-based pseudo-environmentalism masking all variants of statism) is acceptable behavior for the institutional left. Its their MO. This scam will continue until a better one comes along just as the European Parliament ignores "no" votes and continues with their agenda. Nothing to see here folks, move along.

I agree with LC Bennett (10:27) that this is going to be far more damaging than the original Climategate emails, the most damning of which "merely" showed that data was being fudged and covered up in order to promote a particular 'scientific' view; in these FOIA emails, the 'scientists' make explicit that which could only be inferred from the first batch: that these putative scientists see AGW as a winner-take-all political crusade, and not science:

"Somehow we have to leave them thinking OK, climate change is extremely complicated, BUT I accept the dominant view that people are affecting it…"
"I don't know what (Judith Curry) thinks she's doing, but it's not helping the cause."

I wonder if the political organizations that pretend to be news organizations -- the CBC, for example -- have any idea how bad they're going to look in ten years when video clips of their discredited misinformation propaganda, and their political campaigning on behalf of people like Stephane Dion, are replayed endlessly.

"I also think the science is being manipulated to put a political spin on it which for all our sakes might not be too clever in the long run."

Best comment of the lot. The global-warming alarmists have overplayed their hand horribly.

As a result, legitimate claims about AGW will now be viewed with the same immense skepticism as the overheated ones. This is a disservice to all of mankind. Not too clever indeed.

Posted by: rabbit at November 22, 2011 1:23 PM

And so the MSM will:

-First provide no reporting until pressure to do so is impossible to ignore.

- Then, cue in the apologists and spin doctors to undermine the seriousness of the scandal and quickly put it to bed.

And yet:

Canada will contribute $400 million this year alone to projects designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to help developing nations adapt to the changing conditions brought about by climate change as part of our commitment to the Copenhagen Accord.

It no longer matters if the climate change machine is proved to be a hoax. The governments have used it as a vehicle to tax more and failed states have used it to blackmail wealthier nations into paying them off. It's infuriating, but there you have it.

"Observations do not show rising temperatures throughout the tropical
troposphere unless you accept one single study and approach and discount a wealth of others."

That statement alone says it all. There was no observed warming and it was all a lie. I have seen climate figures for many individual locales including my own and the period after 2000 is not above average and is considerably lower than the preceding 10 years. There were endless inquiries. When are the perjury, fraud and conspiracy charges coming?

And what does May care about the truth? The whole environmental movement is built on lies and she knows it. Why would anyone want to donate when the environment is healthy? Without perceived catastrophes, one after the other, the environment industry would whither and die.

From the CBC story, Prof. Mann, father of the hockey stick scam is quoted here:

"a truly pathetic episode," blaming agents of the fossil fuel industry for "smear, innuendo, criminal hacking of websites, and leaking out-of-context snippets of personal emails."

“OK, my skeptic instincts are on high alert. So far, there is no smoking gun in the emails. There are only some uncomfortable exchanges, expressions of doubt, etc., etc. How do we know that this isn’t Mann or another member of the team putting these emails out to try to sway public opinion. . The idea would be to put out a bunch of legitimate emails that put people in a mildly bad light (so as to establish their genuineness), but don’t contain any really damning stuff. There will be a big flurry of press coverage and blogger buzz, but in the end, its all about nothing. The public will then conclude that its all been overblown and that the skeptics are wrong about the degree of dishonesty within the team. Public interest (and the concomitant public pressure) in the UVA emails would subside. This would be a fairly sophisticated strategy (sort of a ‘false flag’ operation), but I’m worried because these emails are not nearly as damning as Climategate I. It all looks very suspicious to me.”

Posted by: dizzy at November 22, 2011 6:49 PM

From the CBC: Penn State University Prof. Michael Mann — a prominent player in the earlier controversy whose name also appears in the latest leak — described the latest leak as "a truly pathetic episode," blaming agents of the fossil fuel industry for "smear, innuendo, criminal hacking of websites, and leaking out-of-context snippets of personal emails."

He said the real story in the emails was "an attempt to dig out two-year-old turkey from Thanksgiving '09. That's how desperate climate change deniers have become."

What does it matter if the evidence for the fraud is two years old, Dr. Mann? And of course the emails are "personal" and had to be "leaked"; few people discuss how to cover up the ongoing fraud they're committing in correspondence made public and published in a newsletter.

"Truely pathetic", yes.

CBC's story is slanted. However they have the story which is rather startling.
They did not link to the e-mails or quote any,but they did allow the lady Katewerk to provide a link in the comments.

There is also more than a few comments about the violation of computer freedoms or something like that. These people firmly support the idea that computer hacking is only valid when it is done by pimply-faced childmen that may also rape.
