My CBC Is...

CBC's 75th anniversary slogan is "Yours to celebrate." Plenty of celebrations are being scheduled for the anniversary, all of them designed to encourage audiences to express what the CBC means to them.

In that spirit, we're asking you to help get the ball rolling in anticipation of the anniversary festivities. We'd like to hear what the CBC means to you, by asking you to complete the following sentence: My CBC is...

Heh.

Update: A CBC comments thread goes horribly wrong....

"My CBC" reminds me of a past slogan, "PetroCanada - it's ours". In either case, if it were mine, I would have a choice if I wanted to own (and pay for) the damn thing. I did not with PetroCan nor do I now with the CBC. Air Canada bled us dry for years and PetroCan cost us billions, but we finally got rid of both. CBC should be next on the bloc - er block.

Posted by: canuck66 at August 20, 2011 8:44 PM

My CBC is for sale to the highest bidder.
No reserve. Would even accept one(1) dollar because that means we all would be receiving a $Billion+ dollars - every friggin year!!

Virtually the only thing I watch on MotherCorpse is HNIC, and even that is a pathetic excuse for 'professional' broadcasting, being littered with technical glitches that no real television network would tolerate. Actually, I am rather pleased that they will only offer 12 Flames games this year, that means I can see more of them from actual professional broadcasters, without the little skips in the sound-track, with up-to-date scoreboards, and with knowledgeable talking heads.

Posted by: Enkidu at August 20, 2011 8:52 PM

Of course CBC is ours. We pay for it. We don't like it but we DO pay for it.

In these times of budget cuts and growing up fiscally it is time that the "feel good" only to themselves CBC is sent the way of the Wheat board, the gun registry etc, while we're at it take bilingualism and stuff it also, the frenchys have lived off all of us far to long, they've been like Simon on the old Frasier show, get lost Quebec you welfare bums you and the CBC add nothing to Canada but debt!

My CBC is part of the suicidal dhimmihood which believes that by accommodating Islamic fascism we will be spared. Little Mosque on the Prairie is an abomination and a fraud, compounded by the fact that no Muslim women actually act on the show.

The CBC should focus on providing balanced programming with NO commercials to the sparsely settled regions of Canada where the private sector broadcasters can't provide service at a profit. It is wrong to use taxpayer funding to compete with the private sector in urban Canada.

I just sent the URL to the comment thread at CBC to the Prime Minister and to Heritage Minister James Moore, along with this comment. You might want to do something similar.

"I believe the comments in this thread, which are overwhelmingly anti-CBC, are a fair and accurate reflection of Canadian opinion of our national broadcaster. I also believe they reflect the opinion of the Conservative Party base.

I sincerely hope your government will do something about this drain on the taxpayer during your majority term in power. I also think that if you were to either privatize or dismantle the CBC altogether prior to the next election, it would be a dead certainty your party would be returned to power."

I suppose that I should be happy that it lasted 12 hours or so,until someone pointed out to them that being called a " shiny tool spotted in smegma" was not a compliment.

My CBC TV is toxic . . . and was given up for Lent many years ago—and then permanently.

(The only time I EVER watch CBC TV is if a video’s posted at SDA or some similar spot. And then I feel sick—the same reaction I have when seeing/listening to Obama: my “comparing truth to rancid, transparent lies meter” goes haywire.

Until I realized I was taken for a complete fool, the CBC Ombuds-toady—he’s a CBC employee, for heaven’s sake!—used to hear from me regularly: he couldn’t see the forest for the trees, mega lit up by my klieg lights—ever. Like Obama, he and his hideous, “I’m so clever and you’re not” minions—paid for by you and me—had a diaper-load of ludicrous, easily disproven excuses every single time, while insisting that the CBC was following its regulations and being entirely fair. [Monty Python, where are you?]

Louise, 'great idea to send the comments here to the PM and (the dishonourable) James Moore.

Actually, I bothered to file complaints to the CBC Ombudsman in order to add to the paper trail of criticism, which thoroughly indicts the CBC. This arrogant, unaccountable bully has treated c/Conservatives and the PM like dirt. I thought, “If ever the Conservatives get a majority, they’ll be able to check out the MOUNTAIN of complaints against the CBC and use them as evidence to shut it down or seriously clip its wings.” Silly me.

That the Conservatives seem to be pandering to the CBC is infuriating: James Moore’s arrogant, sycophantic toadying is utterly disgusting. (Sorry for the ad hominem, but he looks like Humpty Dumpty and I hope he has a great fall—that is, if he doesn’t smarten up). C/conservatives like me, down here in the trenches, have borne all kinds of ignominy for our support of the Conservatives (CPC, Alliance, Reform): we’re the reason they’ve now got a majority. To see them now rewarding the CBC feels very much like a very big betrayal. WHAT’S GOING ON?

Cross-posted at Blazing Cat Fur:

Stealing from one of your posts, BCF, the CBC means to me "Continually Bullshitting Canadians."

They're an organization unto themselves, with no attempt to live up to their mandate, which is to provide balanced coverage of issues of importance to all Canadians.

I don't know if there ever was a time when they did this, but in the last 35 years of my being aware of a number of political issues I've never known them to be balanced in any reportage -- with the exception of Barbara Frum. (I actually cried when I heard she'd died. I miss her.)

CBCers -- let's see, I'm-Peter-Mansbridge-and-you're-not, Suhana Meharchand, Evan Soloman, Rosie Barton, Susan Ormiston, Nahlah Ayed, Wendy Mesley, Keith Boag, Terry Milewski, Linden McIntyre, Julie Van Dusen ... the list goes on and on ... -- are smug, we-know-better-than-you, c/Conservative bashers who act as cheerleaders for all things "progressive," especially for their Liberal pals.

I could actually care less what their political leanings are if they weren't sucking my and every taxpayer's wallet dry. They're parasites eating the apple from the inside on my dime.

Watching the major developments in Libya and the fall of Tripoli, the story having been on the air for about an hour now. CNN, BBC covering events LIVE... CBC isn't!... Fifth Estate in the past hour now The Passionate Eye for another hour.

Major events unfolding and have been for an hour... and the CBC is not live.

Not bad for a billion.

Posted by: jon at August 21, 2011 8:06 PM

BBC, a public broadcaster, is covering events LIVE from their studios in London where it's after 1AM on a Sunday night... experts interviewed, some of which are in the studio itself. Impressive considering not just the late hour there on the slowest late night in the news biz but to have them there so quick, complete with such in-depth, wall-to-wall coverage as this historic event is unfolding.

What's the CBC's excuse? Why is there not a news reader in studio anchoring this live from the desk, going to the phones, interviewing experts in studio, one after the other, looking busy and justifying that billion dollars?! Why back-to-back documentaries from years ago?

I guess they'er like teachers' unions... it's their time off at the mo.

CBC staff I'm sure cross their fingers, hoping that these types of historic events never happen on a Sunday night and cause major disruption to their Sunday evenings during their summer holiday period.

I didn't even know there was a holiday period for those in the news biz... thanks to the CBC, I know there is.
