Posted by Robert at June 30, 2011 12:18 PMHere we go again - an interview that at the very worst was MAYBE rude is turned into 'hate propaganda'? Wow. Freedom of speech abounds for those entitled ones, those so called 'artists'. If you're not with them then you're not one who disagrees but one who actually opposes and hates Canadian culture. Who are these people and why do they get to decide what Canadian culure is? Freedom haters?
Posted by: Scott at June 30, 2011 12:54 PMHaving now seen the interview clip, I see nothing hateful nor even rude on Krista's part. She asked a valid question about how this woman can justify taxpayer funding to the tune of 1.2 million dollars for her so-called art and insisted for an answer instead of letting her off the hook. I am fed up with the entitlement crowd who think they have some divine right to our money while we have no right to question how our tax dollars are doled out.
Posted by: Alain at June 30, 2011 1:04 PMFrom where I sit: K.E. was a "blindsider" when she was on the CEEBEESEA chain, with her dishonestly-spliced footage from different interviews with the PM, strictly to make him look evil.
She was a librano fifth column shill when, during some heated HofC sessions, she produced questions for librano teetotaller, Pablo "I just can't blow into this thing" Rodrigues TO USE DURING Q.P. Again, ostensibly with the aim of discrediting the Conservative Government of PMSH - probably just following orders from her "bosses," whoever they may be.
I was shocked and dismayed when Sun News first trumpeted her hiring. I shall continue to be dismayed, and disappointed, should she, and whoever the h**l hired her, remain on staff.
Her pugnacious and confrontational stance, tone and style are all almost exact copies of the those traits displayed by those rabidly anti-right, left-lib-dem-prog degenerates, with the same sort of arrogant, venom-laced style of 'journalism.' As a conservative big C little c, I must declare that this sort of Ericksonian pap causes me to cringe -
note: As to the question of government grants to the arts? some years ago, when I was setting up an exhibition at a local art gallery, the gallery owner, without my knowledge applied for,and rec'd., a prov. gov't grant to cover the costs of the opening.
Took me the better part of three years, before I could finally persuade the Prov. Arts Council, to accept the money I returned too them - the $2,500 came out of my own pocket too, because the gallery had used it all up by opening night. Great wines, marvelous cheeses.
Didn't then, don't now, don't ever, want to be on the receiving end of government money.
The one who pays the piper gets to call the tune. The one who holds the gold, makes the rules.
That's not censorship, that's a case of co-opted creative types who think that the State owes them a living, but would never dare even think about accepting any sort of input when the State shows up trying to introduce any sort of critical commentary into the work.

What about her attacks vs Palin? And is she saying that women are outside of the realm of criticism? Why can't women be criticized..and criticism isn't an 'attack'.
I'm totally opposed to arts grants. I don't see why 'artists', who are of course self-defined as such, should expect the taxpayer to subsidize them for that self-definition.
The arts community is an incestuous, clique, a cabal of self-defining, self-focused...who live off the taxpayer, while they sneer at the 'ignorance' of the peasants...who 'can't understand art'.
Is SunTV getting desperate, having one of their program hosts guest on another program?
I viewed Margie Gillis' "Chalice"the other day,and it featured the lady sitting in a chair making strange, sort of "flowing" arm movements, which segued into full body motion that was,well... "artistic", for want of a better term.
She looked very ....um... "artsy",which is all well and good, BUT WHY should taxpayers fund her artistry?
Margie, and any other artists, have at it! DO YOUR THING! Paint, sculpt, dance, film, do whatever makes you feel good, just get the hell off the taxpayer's back, and find a patron to fund your artistry.
Failing that, get a day job, like the rest of us have to. Surely talented people like you will have no trouble finding work in the real world!
I can see Ms. Gillis as a concrete finisher, they make over 25 bucks an hour, and that would fund a lot of plasticity of the mind and spasticity of the body on weekends.

I'm with you, LC Bennett. Of course SunTV is pi**ing off the entitled, leftard crowd. They're exposing the rot and the insider stuff that all Canadians are paying for.
In my hippie days, I used to know a bunch of artists, who spent a good half of their time applying for government grants. Ironically, or maybe not, most of them were the children of affluent parents. IOW, they already had connections. All those guys know one another and like to keep things in the loop. The CPC's throwing a monkey wrench into the entitlement game and SunTV is putting the money-to-the-arts scam in the spotlight. Good on both of them!
With so many ordinary, unentitled, unconnected, not-on-the-gravy-train Canadians struggling to make ends meet, I'm glad to see the CPC cutting off never-ending grants to entitled artists who've come to expect government largesse towards them because they're "special."
Posted by: batb at June 30, 2011 4:57 PMAnd kudos to Sun TV and their other program hosts for standing behind Krista Erickson. But no kudos to CTS and their contributors for cowering when Charles McVety's program was cancelled by the CRTC and Canadian Broadcast Standards Council. Surely at least Michael Coren would have had the cojones to stand behind McVety and raise a stink.
Not that I was a fan of McVety's program -- it simply didn't appeal to me personally. But he nevertheless had the right to express his views. And I did enjoy Reverend McVety's courageous radio debates -- he often had to defend himself alone against the most disrespectful, mocking, and accusatory atheistic opponents. He did it with grace and intelligence, dealing with some of the most difficult moral issues that no one else dared to tackle. In the end he lost the war -- chalk another one up for phoney "homophobia".
Preachers are paid to tackle moral and spiritual issues -- that's their job. If clergy are not allowed to speak on these issues publicly, then we may as well eliminate clergy altogether and enforce secular atheism as the only allowable free speech in the public square (FYI, Communist Cuba apparently no longer refers to itself as "communist" -- it is now officially "secularist", and Canada appears to be falling right in line).
Again, kudos to SUN for standing behind their people. It's more than can be said for our coddled Christian networks that are satisfied with complacency and hide at the sight of any real persecution.
'"Hater" is the new "Racist" epithet for the left.' Very interesting observation Dr.D. The left seem to understand that the language used by their ilk causes irritation to anyone who has ever had the pleasure of reading books, manuscripts, articles etc. written in proper English. The term 'hater' is not a word, 'hate' is an abstract noun and it requires a verb to make it meaningful. A person can be a farmer or a rancher because both farm and ranch are concrete nouns; a 'hater' would be an attempt to make an abstract noun, hate, into a Past Participle. Not possible under the rules. 'Youth' is another such example...do those hacks do this on purpose?
The interview in question here is, as Brian and Ezra stated, a challenge to the people of this nation. Do we dare question the sacred cow 'artist'? Why are they entitled to a gument cash slop bucket? What makes that cult so 'special'? The truth is nothing makes the artist special, they are just people, they do no good for anyone but themselves and their pals. If they write, paint or sculpt something worthwhile, we, the people will support them by buying their creations. Grants to any and all from the gument should be scrapped, IMO. The gument is spending taxpayers money, the gument does not have any money except the $$ we give them via taxes - we need to have a tax revolt until all those we elected to run the nation's affairs get their priorities straight. We are buying things that we don't want - how dumb is that?

"...demeaning Rob Ford again...it's the same with most of the rabbid leftwing organization they've become the face of the monster they set out to slay."
It's the Marxist appropriation of "Gay rights" for their own radical ideological purposes: class warfare. Same goes for "race rights", "artists' rights", etc.
The solution: attack the Commie pinkos mercilessly, and invite a homosexual home for dinner. The Commie Left WANTS backlash against Gays -- they deliberately provoke "homophobia" so they can artificially sustain the conditions for this sort of class warfare, and hence present themselves as the only solution -- absolute power to the Commie Left in order to resolve the problem that they created.
A radio commentator accurately described the process as "Hegelian dialectics" -- an essential application in Marxism: fabricate a problem then present yourself as the only solution to the problem.
In the end "Gay rights" will no longer be the domain of Gays -- it will be the exclusive domain of Commie ideologues and elites. Same goes for artists rights, minority rights, environmentalism, etc., etc. Canada is in the midst of a "soft Communist" revolution -- no guns required, but the result will be the same if it succeeds: tyranny.
We've often heard it said: "the ends don't justify the means". But in this case, "the means do not justify the ends" either.
Ricardo even gays are starting to notice how radical and fanatical the movement has become, it's no longer about equality but I believe political supremacy over the majority.

Exactly, you could call it a "tyranny of the minority". Of course I remember as far back as High School social studies we learned about the dangers of a "tyranny of the majority", which occurs when a "democratic" majority abuses power to deny fundamental rights to the minority (e.g. Nazi Germany, Hamas in Gaza, etc., or even the NDP demand for a referendum to keep the Canadian Wheat Board monopoly!).
But our High School social studies teachers never foresaw the possibility for the inverse to occur: a minority to be empowered to deny the fundamental rights of the majority. It's Marx's Hegelian dialectics to perfection -- thesis, antithesis, synthesis. "Dictatorship of the proletariat" accomplished!

Posted by: Abe Froman at June 30, 2011 7:50 PMThe thing that really bugs me is that Krista was quite polite with this "biatch" and now the biatch has the audacity to misrepresent the interview as "hate propaganda". Krista thanked the biatch for "being a good sport", then gave her "her moment in the SUN" to allow her the last word. And the biatch appeared flattered in the end.
The reason this woman is mad is because Krista beat her intellectually -- conservatives aren't supposed to be intelligent, they're only allowed to fulfill the Left stereotype of ignorant cretins.
I honestly don't see how the CBSC could come to the conclusion that the interview was "hate propaganda" when they review the tape. And if they do, then it's time for Parliament to abolish that body, or the Minister to fire people for fabricating phoney "hate propaganda" charges.
I would rather Miss Gillis be hung by her own words. That being said, if her "passion" for art and the funding that comes with it didn't sustain her during the interview, that is hardly the fault of the interviewer.

Posted by: Helen D at June 30, 2011 10:50 PM
The "arts" community has not only shot itself in both feet, but followed up with a shot to their head. I doubt there is any government program that has more widespread disdain than the official "arts". Privately, when I talk to people about some government sponsored art exhibit, generally I'll hear "this is f*****g crap". And, in 99% of cases it is.
People figure that they're just not cultured enough to understand the finer points of government sponsored art. When Sun TV begins airing the concerns of the majority of the population about this "art", suddenly people realize that what they thought was crap is viewed that way by the majority of the population. That's the truth that the "arts community" wants suppressed at any cost.
Back in my university days, the few interactions I had with "artists" were uniformly negative. They were an entitled bunch who disdained "commercial art" and lived in a rarified world where only a small number of "art experts" understood what they were doing and it was the duty of government to provide them with money for them to create their "art".
I also know artists who are doing very well financially and I have no problem spending hundreds of dollars on one of their pieces because I like it. They don't have any connection with the "official artists" and I'm sure their work is considered to be crass commercial garbage by the enlightened parasitic "artists".
For a group of individuals who supposedly values freedom of expression, they're surprisingly quick to demand that certain ideas be quashed. Also, I've noticed a surprising lack of korans in pig shit or similar islamic religious art. It seems that the expressiveness of these self-styled artistic prima-donna's is quite narrowly focused and I'm surprised there isn't more soviet style 1930's art being produced. In comparison with some of the crap I've seen produced with my tax dollars the socialist realism would be far preferable as it requires mastery of ones medium to do it well.
The majority of practical artists I know do art because they enjoy doing it. They all have daytime jobs and might play in a band during the night earning a few hundred dollars on a good gig, but for them it's doing their thing which is fun, not expecting to be supported by the government. Art is a luxury and in tough economic times these "artists" had better have something else they can do to feed themselves.
Loki says: "They were an entitled bunch who disdained "commercial art" and lived in a rarified world where only a small number of "art experts" understood what they were doing and it was the duty of government to provide them with money for them to create their "art"."
Well said and notice the same reasoning behind climate scientists, another pampered breed. How often have you taken on some twit in a comment area of a blog only to be told "what degrees do you have, and quote your peer reviewed papers. If you don't have these, you have no right to comment!"
Over the last forty years or so, there has been an explosion in the worship and belief of "the expert" mostly driven by the UN who sees a perfect world in which "experts" unchallenged by the masses will rule with a benign hand. Unfortunately, the so-called "experts" believe in all this and are appalled that we would even question them. Artists are part and parcel of this perfect world as they have been told they are the new economy. The UN is currently pushing for societies to "transform" into cultural economies where happiness indices will replace the GDP.

Back in the Mulroney era,I saw an article about the funding by Canada Council on the Arts. I don't have a link to it,unfortunately.
The article stated that there was a warehouse in Ottawa that was full of "art" works done by CCA funded artists.
Critics at the time said that if there was any value to these works, they should be sold off to pay for the grants, but CCA proponents used the same bafflegab as Ms.Gillis to dismiss this idea.
Does anyone know if that warehouse still exists?
btw, three of my favourite artists are Bateman,Colville, and Danby, all of whom are dismissed by the Margie Gillis/CCA types as "mere illustrators". None of the three is supported by government funding.

At the end of the letter I sent to each sponser (reproduced below) either by e-mail or snail mail, you'll find the mailing address or e-address for each of the sponsors.
I really urge you to get on this, especially to those that require a delivered letter. They will sit up and take notice of we 'un-washed masses', for it is us who largely buy their products and who most appreciate their sponsorship of SNN.
I'm also including the e-addresses for Heritage Minister James Moore who REALLY needs to hear our voices regarding the continued subsidization of uselessness.

Dear Sir or Ms.
You may have experienced a number of 'complaints' regarding your sponsorship of Sun News Network, generated by members of the 'Canadian arts community' who are directed to do so via the FaceBook page of Canadian dancer, Margie Gillis. Despite the fact that she threatens a boycott of your company and censorship by the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, I think they may be safely ignored.
You'll note that any questioning of publically funded grants must be a result of 'hate' and politically driven 'propaganda' because her work is so important to 'world peace' and 'plasticity of the mind' that there can surely be no other reason. As a consumer and taxpayer, I urge you to continue sponsoring Sun News Network. It is the only cable network that does not march in lockstep with the other major media outlets and it has become a premier viewing platform for many Canadians.
Bear in mind too, that the $1.2 million in grants received by Ms. Gillis and friends is only a tiny fraction of the re-distribution of tax dollars to the 'arts community' and that every dollar taken from our pockets is a dollar that cannot be spent with companies such as TELUS. If the 'arts community' has something of value to offer, they will find that we will willingly spend our after-tax dollars with them. If their art does not resonate with us, we will not. That's the free market system and anything else is simply socialism.
Regards

SDA delivers! We accept whatever our SunTV spokespeople deliver... even when it's boring and annoying.
Go Ezra! Another story about the CBC? Love ya! Lilley's hair looks fab, and he's really digging into Conservative spending habits... when he's not pondering how much Mansbridge's haircut runs taxpayers. Don't worry about smart bombs, it's evil Pete's expense account that will ruin the country!
And those muslims - please. All they do is work!
Why no one is paying attention is beyond me, and probably most of the rest of the country, too! Amazing, isn't it?
