Mark Steyn on Free Speech

In defense of Andrew Bolt, Mark Steyn shares a few thoughts (and a song) :

Steyn is a treasure. A profound defense of free speech.

"In an ideal world, Kung Fu Fighting is not the last hill on which I would have chosen to defend Western liberty."

I pretty much fell off my chair laughing at that one. :)

Mark Steyn is the hammer of the Western world he hits the nail on the head so much.

Always worth a listen to someone with real brains. Not the paper kind either.
He makes it all fun as well.

Posted by: Revnant Dream at June 22, 2011 5:00 PM

Yes, N, he's noted for being very stilted and humourless. Hates music too from what I understand.

Posted by: Black Mamba at June 22, 2011 6:02 PM

Sry, But I think he could file a human rights complaint against me if I heckled him for being a Jewish complainer(whiner).

Not that he isn't accurate with much of his bla bla bla.

Posted by: Blanks at June 22, 2011 6:36 PM

",i> he's noted for being very stilted and humourless "

That he is. It shows in his writing also. His "America Alone" book ,a book largely about demographics,a cranky screed that looked at the changing world, was so tedious that I took two (2)days to read it.

Disclaimer,I would have read it in one(1),but my boss wants me to work so people like N can stay home and read. ~(((;-)

Posted by: wallyj at June 22, 2011 8:25 PM

I picture N reading graphic novels.

Always enjoyed! Cheers

Steyn is not Jewish. He's also one of the funniest and most intelligent people I've had the pleasure to read. (Not because he’s not Jewish!) "America Alone" is a great book and should be read, marked, and inwardly digested by those who don’t know what’s what.

Mark Steyn is a modern day prophet. He's got the smarts and humour; he's knowledgeable about a myriad of topics; and he’s self-deprecating—and brave.

Hugh Hewitt calls him “columnist to the world”. I’m a huge fan of this wonderful Canadian: so wonderful, that he’s no longer living in our “Deranged Dominion”, his moniker for the northern half of North America. He’s right.

Posted by: lookout at June 22, 2011 9:35 PM

YES, to all that lookout.
He's IT. A truly brilliant man; the ultimate autodidact with zero university training. An independent thinker. Hits the mark about 101% of the time. And strangely, despite his generally declinist apocalyptic views, very cheerful. Steyn never fails to make me feel good. Ann Coulter has the same effect.

I've been reading him since launch date of the National Post. Kept wondering, who IS this guy?

As to The Phantom falling off his chair, well, many years ago I was in a restuarant bar in the Watertown Glacier Park area and laughed out loud all the way through a column on Tom Jones and his audience, again wondering WHO. IS. THIS. GUY.!?

I met the great man a few years back when I took a quick flight down to the Claremont Institute's annual Churchill Dinner in Beverly Hills with Steyn as keynote speaker. Amazingly, before the event, the cat was standing ALONE in the lobby. STEYN ALONE. I simply couldn't believe it.

Blanks: Shortly after I began chatting with him, 4-5 Jewish cats approached to thank him for his efforts on behalf of the Jewish community -- in a way that clearly suggested they thought he was Jewish. Before the great man could get it out, I apprised the gentlemen that he was a gentile but indeed a staunch Israel supporter. He was a huge hit.

And despite all the kudos utterly without airs!

Can this really be true? A gay person and a Muslim both publicly state Islam's views on homosexuality. The Muslim gets investigated for "homophobia". And the gay person gets investigated for "Islamophobia". Now I've heard everything, I'm sure, that there is to hear about the human rights racket.

Posted by: felis corpulentis at June 22, 2011 10:15 PM

I think Steyn should team up with Ezra and do a summer road show about the dangers of anti-free speech laws (with Warren Kinsella as music backup, chief heckler and Human Rights Commission Compliance Officer). But, more important, what's the deal with comedy routines and brick walls? Is this decor mandatory or optional?

Posted by: LC Bennett at June 22, 2011 10:15 PM

Yeah, and what's the deal with those airplane peanuts? Am I right?

Posted by: Black Mamba at June 22, 2011 10:17 PM

Haven't you heard? Peanuts are too dangerous for people with nut allergies. I hear they are going to be replaced with nutritional suppositories administered by TSA agents during enhanced pat-downs.

Posted by: LC Bennett at June 22, 2011 10:54 PM

"what's the deal with comedy routines and brick walls? Is this decor mandatory or optional?"
-
brick walls can take a beating: tomatoes, rotten heads of lettuce, old shoes, etc.
-
Steyn, of course, need not worry about that unless he is playing to the HRC / NDP types...

Brilliant as usual. I love Steyn's dry sarcastic humor. He is unmatched in his ability to see and articulate the absurd; Levant is not too far behind. It's a good thing Steyn left King Edward's school at 18. I can only imagine that the liberalmentalism then (worse now) would have been intolerably frustrating for him. I can't see him utilizing the fake it till you make it strategy either.

God damn every filthy maggot bastard son-of-a-bitch shit-sucking pig straight to hell, for THEY ARE THE ENABLERS OF THIS SWILL!

God damn them straight to hell!

MND, many thanks for your paean to the marvellous Mark! What you say is spot on. He’s a national treasure but “official” Canada’s too stupid to get it.

Rather than give him the credit he’s due, he’s hounded and harassed by these idiots. And, as you say, we always see him “sunny side up”: just hearing his name makes me smile. The best antidote to state bullies—well, bullies of any kind, as Ezra loves to point out—is to make merciless fun of them. Here’s a snatch of his views on Jennifer Lynch, QC (one couldn't make up a more appropriate name for her!), Chief “Commissar” of the Canadian "Human Rights" Commission:

“This whining [about people like Mark, who criticize her] from Queen Jennifer is unbecoming for the government of a G7 country. Look, her dress-up Nazis Dean Steacy and Richard Warman think that being a Canadian ‘Human Rights’ agent is some super-duper 007-type role involving top-secret undercover work on the Internet. That would put Commissar Lynch in the role of M - or C, as Britain's spymaster is known in real life. And M doesn't go around giving speeches every week complaining that spywatch.blogspot.com is chilling 007's martini. If Jenny Lynch sees herself as Judi Dench to Dean Steacy's Daniel Craig, then her name should not even be made available to the public. The Dominion's rightsmistress should simply be known as X or * or some such. It's a small price to pay for protecting Canada's ‘most vulnerable’”. SIGH!

I’ve met Mark at a book signing: down to earth and very pleasant. I’m going to meet him at a function next year and am really looking forward to his talk and a chance to personally pass on my thanks and best wishes. I WISH he were on SNN: how about the 8:00 p.m. spot against Bill O’Reilly?

Posted by: lookout at June 23, 2011 9:24 AM

I’ve just had my post held—second in two days: maybe it’s because a quote had the name Richard W*rman in it. I’ll check this out. Test!

P.S. Nice to hear your thoughts, MND.

So here's my question:

If the state we're in as far as freedom and democracy goes is a direct result of our Western system and way of doing things, and Magna Carta, why aren't we better off being more like Assad?

I mean it seems to me that "democracy" in the end leads to all manner of madness and idiocy, throughout the broad sweep of history. Shouldn't we be plugging for a different kind of system?

Posted by: bbss at June 23, 2011 11:09 AM

My earlier message is still caught in the filter (while Mark M’s unpleasant, little screed sits there untouched). I’ve made an amendment and will try again:

Mark Steyn rocks!

I'd like to say, "Mark Steyn for either Prime Minister or President!", but I know he'd rather not!

He may not be able to sing, N, but he's got a much bigger pair of cojones than most other media "pundits." Most of them are just a a bunch of well-paid pc pansies.

Mark Steyn's American Songbook - an exquisite taste and selection of Steyn's favorite classic lyricists. Yet Mark Steyn brutally butchered the Kung Fu Fighting lyric. If Steyn ever tries out to sing for American Idol, he'll never have made it past the 1st round — with his ♫ singing and acting totally out of sync ☺

Posted by: KC at June 23, 2011 9:10 PM

Who cares about his singing voice?

His speaking voice is heavenly -- and what he says is what counts.

Posted by: batb at June 23, 2011 10:23 PM

The person who said Steyn is a modern day prophet is exactly right. He's a cheerful Cassandra who's not believed despite presenting actual evidence until his predictions start coming true such as the demographic shift from native European to Muslim that's becoming visible now to conservatives but libs won't recognize until they're being wrapped in a burka or sliced through with a scimitar. Libs are the slowest learners on the planet and Steyn shoots them like fish in a barrel. He dances verbal circles around them while all they know how to do is call him names, repeat their ignorant opinions against all evidence and sic their totalitarian misnamed human rights attack dogs on him (but they won't make that mistake again soon).
