It's Probably Nothing

Via Gates of Vienna;

Denmark has suspended the Schengen treaty and re-introduced controls at its borders with Germany and Sweden. It was announced by the country’s Finance Minister, Claus Hjort Frederiksen. . .

[...]

The tensions in the euro zone should be more than a matter of academic interest for Britain and other non-euro nations. The Schengen agreement, which guarantees passport-free travel across the bulk of the EU, one of the cornerstones of the European project, is unravelling as France closes its border with Italy and more desperate immigrants pour in from North Africa.

OK, so maybe it WON'T be the currency that unravels the union.

Didn't see that coming.

Thanks, Kate.

Gotta pass this one on through the appropriate channels.

Yes, interesting question. Perhaps it will be alian invasion that destroys the EU, not socialist evil.

Looks like the European version of the "Noble Experiment" is in dire peril. Interesting to see there's still some nationalism alive in that PC continent.

Wonder how long it'll be before they come begging to us for some financial help, or worse,to take a few hundred boatloads of refugees off their hands.

So "progressive" of the Euro's. Probably already building a few "camps" as well?

What is the French for "Kristallnacht"

Posted by: Fred at May 11, 2011 8:16 PM

I have a bad, bad feeling about this. And it started with the great wonderful revolutions that the progressives love so much.

Posted by: dwright at May 11, 2011 8:16 PM

I still can't believe that progressives just tried to get elected in this country when the countries that they are trying to duplicate here in Canada are going broke, overrun, etc.

soooooo I should not be dismayed at deciding against dual Cdn-Irish citizenship in order to wander the old world with ease?

Strongly resembles Arizona's response to the Mexican "reconquista".

The response of Belgium's EU poobahs will be interesting.

The Liberal elite's have never had a problem with multiculturalism, providing it's not in their neighbourhoods.

Multiculturalism is for the quaint little people, the unwashed masses. Now that it is finding some roots in their neighbourhoods, it becomes not such a good idea.

How can it be a surprise to anyone that cheese still stinks?

The Vandals have reversed course. They now want into Europe. The reconquista of Islam-ism has begun.

Kate as Mark Steyn said, this could be considered as a link to a hate site. By Totalitarian Conservatives who are anything but Conservative . Even the NDP wouldn't go this far to protect whining minorities who are slowly colonizingng this Nation. By Lawfare or Jihad. Have they gone mad?
Now where supposed to shut up about reality.

THE CRIMINALIZATION OF THE LINK

Steyn on Canada and the Commonwealth

If you wanted to confirm the notion that elections are a waste of time, you could hardly do it more swiftly than the new Canadian Conservative majority government is with its omnibus crime bill. Clause Five criminalizes the "hyperlink" - that's to say, if you include a link to a site "where hate material is posted", you could go to jail for two years.

I have a Canadian passport as well as an EEC passport. I would be hard pressed to find a reason to visit the EEC at this point. It would be cheaper to just drive down to Dearborn Michigan.

Very little of value left in Europe. The people who matter emigrated years ago. The others are just unlucky. Then again they probably voted for the socialist. Made their own bed.

Revnant Dream - I agree.
This omnibus bill by the CPC has the potential to be the most disastrous mistake they have ever made legally.

What on earth are they thinking? And where is Ezra Levant on that issue? He should be all over it. I sent him an email the other day about it, and no response so far (he has usually responded pretty quickly in the past... I guess he's busy with SunTV, but still...)

A whole lot a damage is going to be done in trying to hold together something that shouldn't have been constructed in the first place.

BTW: Black Mamba has a relative that is a Scandi ... not that it matters.

This is an appalling development, especially from the Danes. They only have a population of 5.5 million, which is less than the GTA.

Can you imagine the cost to Canada if every car and truck trying to go from, say, Kingston to London had to stop and show papers? The EEC's elimination of border controls is the main reason for their long period of growth.

I worked in Detroit while living in Windsor for a few years, and I know how long it takes to cross the border. And that was for an ordinary citizen; I understand for many truckers, the wait is hours long. Certainly there was always a huge lineup of trucks at the bridge.

Until very recently, skilled workers coming to Ontario had to re-certify for work they'd been doing for years in other provinces. This was costly, and time consuming. And if you were an Ontario construction worker trying to work in Quebec? Fuhgedaboutit.

Removing frictions from the economy are precisely what trans-national agreements are GOOD at. Of course, the bureaucrats at the EC had to keep on tinkering, so they started imposing standards that don't help businesses to run more efficiently, such as rules about butter, beef, and cheese. (Ironically, their justification was these standards would keep product standards high. But as scandals about adulterated olive oil, wine, and Balsamic vinegar showed, this justification was another in a long line of hopey-feeley nonsense.)

It's appalling that the True Finns would sell out and support a bailout in exchange for hassling travelers.

I'm not sending my son for this third shot.

Sort it out locally or in the inestimable words of Alien, "Ripley: I say we take off and nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure."

You know she was right because they didn't take her advice in the first place and guess what? There were more monsters. And clones and tie-ins to other movies and stuff.

As someone living in europe and subsequently doing a lot of travel between countries for several years, one thing that I've always noticed was that most of the border stations on the highways between countries were never ever removed.

It was like they were just there, waiting to be put back into service.

Hmmmmmm wonder why that could have been???

Posted by: Frenchie77 at May 12, 2011 6:27 AM

far out.

yet another conservative omnibus bill. just like mikey 'six toes' harris here in ontari-ari-ario. you know, where the minister of edjukashun was a high school dropout itching to 'create a crisis' and the minister of transort was a car salesman. (that combo had CONSERVATIVE written all over it.)

and look where THAT got them.

next up: stevie harpoon announces a '3 strikes' law to back up his 'tough on crime' election promise. (which will cost 100s of billions that goes in the pockets of the newly privatized prison cystem just like in californicate).

Hey Sharpshooter (an oxymoron if I ever heard one), you had better hope that some drunk with 4+ DUIs under his/her belt doesn't run into you on your drive home.

"SHOW ME YOUR PAPERS"

Posted by: Fearless Leader at May 12, 2011 8:49 AM

Not only did Harper not repeal section 13 he's copied it's facist legislation and is trying to slide it into the criminal code. If I knew about this bill prior to the election I would not of voted conservative. The progressive's love those open borders, as long as they can remain in their elite gated communities with white's only.

Posted by: Orlin in Marquette at May 12, 2011 1:32 PM

Fearless Leader, absolutely right. Europeans instantly default to "Show me your papers" whenever things aren't comfy.

This is what I admire about Arizona and why I winter there. "Show me your papers" will get you a .45 up the nose in Arizona.

The Mexican "Reconquista" in AZ is getting at least a blind eye from the federal authorities, and very possibly passive cooperation. People of my acquaintance in Phoenix intimate that Border Patrol has become a strictly catch-and-release organization under Obama. Or not even catch, just watch as the Mexicans stroll by.

Arizona response to that has been -citizen- patrols out watching what the Border Patrol does. Also picking up stranded Mexicans, finding dead Mexicans, and getting in gunfights with the armed Mexican drug smugglers the BP lets in. Not cops, just locals. Ranchers, people who live in border towns, retired military, etc.

Any Italian or Danish (Brit, French, whatever) citizens deciding to go do what the cops and feds won't would end up in jail the same morning they set out. Probably they'd get arrested for just saying they were going to do it.

This is why Arizona will be fine, and Europe is gonna have a frickin' war.

Gates of Vienna has the story wrong. Denmark is NOT withdrawing from the Schengen Treaty. That treaty allows passport-free travel among the EU nations for EU citizens. What it IS doing is restaffing customs booths for vehicle scanning of cargo. What it means is that Denmark no longer trusts the entry ports of some other EU nations in their screening of entrants from outside the EU, specifically Italy and Greece.
