Welcome your new Conservative overlords, Canada!
And the number one takeaway from Election 2011? Canadian polling firms are about as accurate in their projections as an SDA comments thread, 19 times out of 20.

I don't expect Harper to all of a sudden turn back into a Reform Libertarian, much as I would like that. He will probably govern exactly as he has so far, except that (hopefully) he will be a bit more relaxed.
And on a smaller note, all those donations to get rid of Mark Holland paid off!
Kill the LGR!!
And don't bring in any new anti-gun BS to "sweeten" killing the LGR.
Well, the "we *would*, but we only have a minority" excuse is now gone. Time to see if the CPC are actually conservative, or if they've morphed into Liberals with blue ties after all these years in Ottawa.

Posted by: CP at May 2, 2011 11:09 PMI now fully expect Ignatieff to diminish and sneak back down south (especially since he is currently loosing in his own riding). Bob Rae will now try to unite the left, bringing the Liberals and NDP together to form a new Canadian political party the "Liberal Democrates" or may the "New Liberal Democates" (the NDP gotta figure someway to keep the New in there) Either way I think tonight we witnessed the death of the LPC......

VOTE REFORM !
Cut loose the CBC, end forced contributions to political parties, end the wheat board and eliminate the gun registry. Reform or eliminate the Indian Act. And grind the Liberals' collective nose into the dirt! Yipeeeeee!

Bruins win in OT, Osama gets smoked and Harper get a majority. Does it get any better?
Posted by: Brian Mallard at May 2, 2011 11:12 PMKate - why don't you start a "first three things to do" thread:
Here are mine:
1) Freeze all public hiring
2) Kill the LGR, destroy all the records
3) Return the Human Rights Commissions to a strict focus on employment and housing law. NO role in regulating speech.
(and on the wishful thinking, but it won't happen list)
1) put property rights into the constitution
2) open up discussion of our healthcare system, looking at the much more effective European models
3) Reform the immigration and refugee system so that it benefits Canada, not 3rd world countries.
All available auditors please report to Ottawa. We have the C.B.C., The Wheat Board, The Long Gun Registry, Elections Canada, Canada Post, Liberal Party Of Canada all requiring your services.

Fell asleep and slept through the whole thing, and awoke to SMS texts about the results.
Amazing. I'm elated at the con majority, the destruction of the bloq. But a bit disquieted at how much ground the ndp gained: this country, like the US, is becoming highly polarized politically between right and left, between doers and coasters, between producers and takers.
I hope the next 5 years are good ones, for the future of this country. Mr. Harper, you finally have your chance at unfettered government.
Please do so wisely.

Posted by: Robert W. (Vancouver) at May 2, 2011 11:28 PMHistoric Liberal Defeat (how sweet it is)
and Bloc-head decimation (the cherry on top!)
Mr.Harper, please govern wisely and may God be with us all.
One thing about that though, Allan, is that alot of the Dippers' QC seats, face it, have idiots in them with no real connection to their constituents. Those Quebeckers won't be voting NDP again (like Ontarians won't be fooled by the provincial NDP again). At the same time the QC wing of the NDP will be pretty strong and Jack in placating them will piss off his anglophone blue collar voters in the ROC. So I can see them losing half their seats to the Grits four years from now (with or without a Bloc rebirth) and not gaining another 40 seats to become the new government. They'll also have to defend their ludicrous leftist policies for the next four years; something they've never had to do ever in the past as the fourth party. [Disband the Canadian Forces? Forced nationalization of large businesses? The government owning every drop of water in the country, even rain water? etc.]

Now, you can finally get down to work!
I am going to party now!
This is great! I was seriously considering an "If you can't beat 'em join 'em" strategy should Jack have pulled off a potential run for PM. I don't expect major shifts in Conservative policy though. Canada is a centrist country. This is a long fight to move the Canadian center to the right. This is an evolution, not a revolution. It took the left 40-50 years to move from our greatness to where we are today.

It ain't about the culture so much as the baksheesh.
Cut them off the gravy train Stephen.
Posted by: Oz at May 2, 2011 11:50 PMIt was good to see that the electorate was able to see through the bogus charge of "Contempt of Parliament" that was cooked up by the Opposition and repeated by the MSM. Had the MSM done its duty, it would have reported the motion for just what it was: the first time in Canadian history that the Opposition used the word "contempt" in its name-calling towards the sitting minority government as the Opposition defeated the government. It never was anything more than that and it sure was great to see the electorate of Canada see through the mirage and determine where the real problem was and to offer a solution in Canada's best interests.
The second thing is: the Conservatives are not a right wing party. A very simplistic definition of the political middle of a country is that Party that the greatest number of people vote for. If the vote distribution occurs over the entire country, then that is further proof that that Party is centrist. In this election, only Quebec did not join with the CPC. Given the choice between saying that 22% Quebec is centrist and 78% ROC is right wing or between saying that 78% ROC is centrist and 22% Quebec is left wing, I choose the latter. Therefore the CPC is a very centrist Party, its policies will be very centrist. The main difference between this party and it predecessors over the last century is how it treats both Quebec and the Western provinces. But that is a whole new topic.
Thanks, Kate, for the bandwidth.

Hopefully we drive that deficit down to zero faster than predicted and start paying down the debt. The Tories have to spend less money.
As to Quebec: I say f*ck 'em. There shouldn't be a cent spent in any seat the Tories didn't win (or might not win next time). They can decide to get onside, or stay on the outside.
Seat redistribution in the West and Ontario means this is day 1 of a eight years of Tory rule.
Enjoy it tonight folks.

Congratulations to PM & Mrs. Harper, all candidates and their hard working crews.

SUN TV didn’t do it like that. I was really impressed at how well they pulled tonight together—and they’re only two weeks old. (They were SO fair to the NDP and Warren Kinsella, I sometimes felt annoyed!)
Ignatieff’s “farewell speech” was gracious for about one minute: to preserve the fiction he'd crafted, he should have bowed out right then. His self-serving blathering on showed that the gracious first bit was pure theatre: for effect only. He really didn’t mean a word of it.
In the same breath that he, in effect, said, “I respect the Canadian people and they have spoken”, he insulted them: he said they don’t want “right wing”, as in the Conservatives. Oh yeah, Count? How did Canadians just vote?
Good riddance, Iggy.
Re: Winning without Quebec.
Yep.
Borden won a majority in 1917 without Quebec and so too did R.B. Bennett in 1930. But you're right in that it's been very rare in the modern era.

Posted by: Black Mamba at May 3, 2011 12:18 AMThere are now two choices for Stephen Harper, to govern as a real conservative, or to continue placing expediency ahead of principle.
I would have preferred a slightly different outcome where Harper was forced to confront this question no matter what. I hope nobody at SDA or in riding executives across the country mistakes this rather pedestrian result for a green light to do whatever the party insiders want to do -- I still maintain that this will lead to party disunity and eventually a split, because there are many people out there looking for more principle and less expediency.
Keep your feet on the ground and your eyes on the details of legislation, because there are some questionable details in forthcoming bills that affect freedom of speech. We'll see if this is just a patronage rush or the beginning of structural change in Canada. And one final note, congratulations to every principled MP who won election tonight. As to the rest, be on your guard, we watch majorities even more carefully than minorities.

Posted by: Speedy at May 3, 2011 12:20 AMIf I were the NDP I would not put too much faith in their 'surge' in Quebec. Quebecers are rather whimsical (or should I say wierd)in their voting patterns. A while back they went overboard on the Creditistes, then it was the Bloc, now the NDP. If they elect a PQ government provincially and then have another plebiscite and wind up seceding (hopefully) the NDP will lose over half their strength in one blow.

Posted by: WalterF at May 3, 2011 12:35 AMRe the NDP's woes: A couple of hours ago, I was just mentioning to my husband that their gains must be bittersweet, as we saw riding after, west of Quebec, riding going Conservative. Then SUN News showed just that at the NDP headquarters. And the Dippers were really crestfallen when the Conservative MAJORITY was announced. Schadenfreude!
And now, in Reality Land, Jack has to deal with his Quebec loonies. Good luck to him. I think it will be like riding a bucking bronco. "Be careful what you wish for." Ditto the Libs. and Bloc, who, with the NDP, orchestrated this election in order to carry out their very own secret agenda of forming a coalition.
“How did that hopey, changey thing work out for them?” We smile!
What Chairman Kaga said.
However, it is a double-edged sword. The NDP have a huge number of seats. Jack Layton, the utter sleazebag he is, retained his seat, along with his odious wife, Olivia Chowcesceu. Despite the crippling blows to Ignatieff, Duceppe, Trudeau and other windbags who thought they were entitled, we still have a party that could stymie Tory efforts to remove party subsidies, among other things.
I breathe a little easier, however.

Posted by: Oz at May 3, 2011 12:47 AMFelt really good coming home and seeing that there's now a conservative majority. One can only hope that PMSH will now start pushing some of the policies that he had before becoming PM.
This was the first election where I haven't watched TV or gone onto the internet to get election results before the polls close. First inkling was when one of the docs at the working medical dinner I was attending took a phone call and, at it's conclusion, announced he was going to have another beer in celebration of the Conservative majority. The sudden good cheer around the table made it clear that pretty well everyone attending had voted Conservative.
What I'd like PMSH to do as soon as possible (tomorrow's OK) is:
(1) get rid of that POS statist gun registry and sic the auditors on anyone involved with it
(2) defund the CBC - I'm sure that Sun TV would be happy to pick up the few sane people that worked at the CBC like Rex Murphy
(3) dismantle HRC's and start investigating anyone who's ever worked there for human rights abuses
(4) declare that climategate demonstrated that CAGW is just an elaborate power grab and let the world know we want it warmer where we live
(5) eliminate the per-vote subsidy and make political parties raise their own money
(6) put property rights into the Canadian constitution
(7) Make Quebec pay its own way
(8) end forced bilingualism
(9) end immigration from muslim countries and stop allowing people to bring in sick relatives from third world countries
(10) end medicare
The above are a good start and I'll have some more suggestions about what can be done in month two of a majority government.
WTF happened to the voters of Saanich?! How is the watermelon leader going to be accomodated in parliament - will she have her own indoor whale tank?
I'm glad that the voters of most of Vancouver decided to stop drinking the socialist koolaid for long enough to elect Conservatives and the same goes for Toronto voters.
Before everyone gets too drunk, notice that the two solitudes are even further apart tonight:
BC: Conservative Majority
Alberta: Conservative Majority
Sask.: Conservative Majority
Manitoba: Conservative Majority
Ontario: Conservative Majority
Nova Scotia: Conservative Majority
New Brunswich: Conservative Majority
Quebec: Crushing NDP majority. Both Conservatives and Liberals reduced to tiny rumps.
Quebec has moved further away from the Canadian political consensus than at any time in its history. That goes all the way back to the time Cartier mistook the name of the local native village to mean the name of the entire northern half of the continent.
If Quebec feels alienated by this -- and no doubt they will -- watch for the PQ to come storming back in the Provincial election faster than you can say "ADQ".
Don't for a minute think this is over. This is just the first half of a huge change. The second has yet to play out, for better or for worse.

Posted by: Chairman Kaga at May 3, 2011 12:50 AMNate, not really. The Canadian party landscape has shifted around so much in the last twenty years that it's unrecognizable every other election. Right now it's the Tories vs. Everyone. But it used to be the Liberals vs. Everyone, and before that it was the Liberals and Reform and Bloc vs. Conservatives, and before that the Conservatives vs. the Liberals. etc. etc. etc.
Posted by: Eileen R at May 3, 2011 12:50 AM@ Dave (12:47) - thing of it is, polls never capture / adjust / figure out which voters will actually turn out. Just like Rob Ford in Toronto, the conservative vote is simply more resolved than the lib vote. I'm sure the polls were right inasmuch as they gauged the leanings of people sitting at home. But gauging those who will act upon their leanings... another matter entirely.
Posted by: Brad in Waterloo at May 3, 2011 12:51 AMErik, Luke, it may be quite the boon that the Conservative have a majority but I don't think the NDP will stand idly by and let the subsidies go. That would be disastrous for them. I really want the subsidies gone!

Black Mamba, is that you at AoSHQ? :D
Posted by: Erik Larsen at May 3, 2011 12:52 AMRe: 50% + of the vote...
The last election where the winner of the popular vote was more than 50% was Mulroney in 1984, before that, Diefenbaker in 1958. Before that, King in 1936. I believe Borden and Laurier both won more than 50%.
People that argue that past elections are illegitimate because more than half the voters didn't vote Tory seem unaware of this fact. The only time 50% of the voters have sided with a party since World War II were with Tory governments. Ergo their logic: every Liberal government since '36 has been illegitimate. Total. BS.
Cheers,

Prime Minister Stephen Harper:
"*But westward, look, the land is bright!"
…-
“Conservatives romp to crushing Canadian election win”
“Canada’s ruling Conservatives won a crushing victory in Monday’s federal election, as the left wing vote split between two parties and the separatist Bloc Quebecois faded to almost nothing.
Still provisional results showed the Conservatives had 167 seats in Parliament, well above the 155 they needed to transform their minority government into a majority. They won 40 percent of the vote, more than most pollsters had expected.
“The results are as they should be,” Conservative supporter Fred Biddle said at Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s raucous victory party in Calgary. “It looks like we are back to a two party system in Canada: Conservatives and all the rest.”
The Conservatives, describing themselves as the guardians of a surprisingly resilient Canadian economy, had stressed throughout the election campaign that they needed a majority to keep the economy strong.
The Canadian dollar firmed as the results emerged, and analysts expected the stock market to follow it up on Tuesday.
“(A Conservative majority) is likely to be seen as a positive in the world’s financial markets for the Canadian dollar,” said Jack Spitz, Managing Director of foreign exchange at National Bank Financial.”

I don't think you understand the concept of political parties in the US. You have groups form coalitions that form the parties, not single parties based upon demographics. That's pretty cemented into our system. That's why a group like the Teaparty or the Libertarians hasn't split from the Republican party. If that was going to happen it would have happened between 2008-2010.
Obviously, I said something wrong, so I apologize for my comments, but my reaction was more in response to the "piss off" comment. I would never tell you to "piss off" if you made a comment like that to mean on an American political blog.
Posted by: Nate at May 3, 2011 1:19 AMIn 1993, Libs won 177 seats with 41% of vote. In '97, Libs 155 seats with 38.5%. In 2000, Libs 172 seats with 40.8%. In 2004, Libs got a minority of 135 seats with 36.7% of the vote. Then the Conservatives got minorities of 124 and 143 with 36.3% and 37.7% respectively. (From http://electionresources.org/ca/house.php?election=2008)
I can't find any stats that go farther back than that but during that period, no majority party ever earned much more than 40% of the vote.
Those who argue that 60% did not vote for the Conservatives, should remember that this argument cuts both ways. Also, they tend to assume that those who didn't vote for Harper form a monolithic anti-Harper party, which is not the case. And those who argue that we should be governed by proportional assignment of seats to votes, would doom the rest of Canada into indenture to GTA and Quebec--which was the case during many of the Lib years. Many of us have not forgotten.

Yes, unfortunately the Democrats have successfully made themselves into the umbrella party for every client constituency motivated by a desire for free s**t paid for by anybody who's not them.
As for the Republicans, I'm starting to believe they are some sort of mass experiment in plumbing the depths of ineptitude, probing it to see if there is a bottom and if so, where it lies.

There won't be anything contemptuous about the next parliament, not that there was about the last one according to how the Canadian people have voted today.
Looks like the shadowy Bloc Coaltion was what canadians had contempt for.
Seems the message from Canadians is: "Steady as she goes and don't make me come to the voting boothe again for another 5 years."

Well, pretty soon even the most clueless are going to figure out that Quantitative Easing is Bankruptcy's best friend, not quite as sexy but "she has a great personality", and Bankruptcy would simply love to set us up on a blind date.
More seriously, it's not as though the US two-party dichotomy is codified into law or anything. Take for instance Bernie Sanders, who caucuses with the Democrats. This could become more prevalent, resulting in something akin to the coalitions more often seen in parliamentary governments. I think the GOP leadership still does not appreciate what thin ice they've taken the party onto. They would do well to look at their own history vis-a-vis the old Whig Party.
Posted by: KevinS at May 3, 2011 1:47 AMWas just clicking through the election results map savoring the sea of blue but when I looked at Alberta I thought something had gotten stuck on my monitor screen. It wouldn't rub off and when I zoomed in closer, there was a distinctly unblue area in Edmonton.
How do you Albertans explain this? When I lived in Alberta it was very comforting that people either voted Reform or Conservative about 70-80% of the time. An NDP MP from Alberta? WTF? Did the NDP bus in loads of dead people from cemetaries from the whole country to get enough voters there? And it was turning out to be such a good evening except for this ugly imperfection.
I'm glad to see that Calgary was still solid blue.

The good thing about a Conservative Majority is that they can't blame the opposition for bills not passed or deficits. They now control the House of Commons and the Senate. Lets see what they do.

oz, I'd forgotten about the "Redmonton" label. I always did prefer Calgary.
Was pondering what comes next and I think now is the time for us to flood PMSH's office with letters (yes, the paper kind that you fold, put in envelopes and transmit via the complicated archaic snailmail protocol) with some of the Conservative principles that we've noticed a distinct lack of when he was PM of a minority government.
I was very impressed with SH when he was a Reformer and later as head of the Canadian taxpayers federation and he was the closest thing to a Libertarian politician that we've had. My hope is that, being the supreme strategist, he's kept these ideas under wraps and has been waiting for the appropriate time, ie a majority government, to put them into legislation. My fear is that there is something in the Ottawa environment that rots peoples minds and turns them into brainless socialists. Whether PMSH is immune to this unknown local socialism inducing factor is unknown but I really hope that he is.
While getting rid of the gun registry is at the top of my list considering how long I've fought against it, the most important issue really should be dealing with the statist agenda underlying CAGW. Canada has the opportunity to be an international leader in this regard by simply rejecting all of the junk science that underlies the IPCC reports. Climategate revealed the depths of corruption inherent in the climate "science" club and we have a unique opportunity now to finally slay the monster of CAGW.
Right now the US has turned against CAGW with a Republican congress and, if Canada stood up for what the science really shows, there would be a N. American consensus (I promise not to use that word again in this post). The watermelons will be outraged but they are the ones with the secret statist agenda with its seemingly innocent green wrapping. I'd like to see Vaclav Klaus have some company when it comes to national leaders standing up to the watermelons.
So, I would suggest that you keep the letter very civil and it wouldn't hurt to look up PMSH's pre-MP statements on CAGW which are consistent with science. Remind him of those and also let him know you support him if he decides to take on the watermelons head on.
This is the most important problem facing us as a nation and, should the predictions of a coming 20 years of cooling come true, we'd be a lot better off if we started preparing for it now rather than wasting vast amounts of money on "renewable energy".

My take away on this campaign;
- what more does one need to see from the MSM to realize what a bunch of scum bags they really are!
- NDP Jack will have his hands full with a causcus full of seperatits. Watch his party implode.
- my biggest concern is the level of entitlement that permeates the citizens of this country. The level of discourse in this campaign hit a new low. Serious topics were not debated!
- As Boob Ray tries to take the Libel remanents to a union with the NDP I see quasi sane Liberals moving to the CPC.

I thought the highlight of the evening was watching poor old Bob Fife looking gloomier and gloomier as the night went on. He looked like someone whose dog had just been run over by his ex-wife as she drove off in his new pick-up. It was all he could do to not break out in tears, it seemed.
