The second stage is Anger.
Posted by Kate at April 16, 2011 6:36 PMOn the eve of the Power Shift 2011 climate youth conference, no one expects President Obama to show. If he did, he'd probably get booed by activists angry about his tightening embrace of the oil, coal, gas, and nuclear industries. But it was a very different story two years ago at the last Power Shift, when 10,000 young, idealistic activists filled the Washington Convention Center screaming his name on the opening night of the conference, anticipating his arrival after tantalizing hints from White House staff that he would accept an invitation to speak.
[...]
Then we heard the rumor and saw the dreadful confirmation on the news: Instead of giving a few minutes of his time to rally the movement, he was three blocks away at the Verizon Center in a front row seat watching the Wizards play the Bulls.
Truth hurts, these young idealist children were used by a politician dressed in environmental messiah robes and now they know it. Happens to just about everyone...

Posted by: Speedy at April 16, 2011 8:19 PMThose "youth" are never satisfied... Give the guy a break! He's been busy! He stopped the oceans rising. He brought the global temperature down. He plugged the hole. Brought peace to the world. Fixed the economy. Plugged the hole. Made America more respected in the world. Got his country off dependance of foreign oil. Plugged the hole. Used his stash to give everyone free medicare and free money. Exposed all them fat cats on that there "Wall Street" and made them pay. And plugged the hole. What he really needs is some time off. Maybe he could use a bit it to look around the house for that birth certificate.

Posted by: Knight 99 at April 16, 2011 8:43 PMThe clown prince of politics.
Can it get any funnier?
The columnist and the "youth" he describes are mad -
barking moonbats. I reserve that term for those whose policies would actually damage or destroy themselves.
But it has taken a long time for understanding to set in - too long. The signs were there from the beginning.
My realisation that the Obama presidency would end badly came with his speech at the Berlin Victory Column -
which commemorates Prussian victories in the Danish-Prussian war, the Austrian-Prussian war, and the Franco-Prussian war.
And was reinforced when I read Barak Obama Sr's article, "Problems Facing our Socialism" in the East Africa Journal of July 1965.
Obama Sr. (like Obama Jr.) had (has) no conception of wealth creation. He thought (thinks) only in terms of spreading wealth around,
which he identified as an African tribal characteristic.
"Problems" is not a brilliant essay BTW - Obama Sr was intelligent but not brilliant.
However, this work is plainly seminal in Obama Jr's thinking.
I doubt BTW that Jeremiah Wright had any influence on Obama Jr. Obama Jr. had heard it all already when he met Wright -
from his father's essay, from talking with former Mau-Mau terrorists, from his mother, from reading Frantz Fanon.
He probably thought of Wright as a naive Yank - a Christian of all things! - whose heart was in the left place.
I imagine the whole bargaining phase is gonna produce some hilarity.
Posted by: syncrodox at April 16, 2011 8:58 PMAh yes, globall warming is such a threat, Barrack must "rise up " like Iggula here at home, and slay the dragon of globall warming, 2 feet plus here on Apr 16. The student vote, that is what Canadians need to be wary of, it's what America overlooked, and they ended up getting Randy, off of My name is Earl, running their show, please God, don't let the likes of fleet-footed Mercer rile the Universities up enough to vote for "Rise Up Iggula". If you value this country called Canada, you will vote for progress/Harper. If you just want to "rise up" be it in the bed room or the elevator, maybe the laundromat, well, vote for "rise up Ig" or Rig for short.

"spreading wealth around,"?
That's a tribal potlatch.
It's a variant of socialism, aka the religion of the stomach.
"Potlatch is a ceremony practiced by Indigenous peoples in some parts of North America. The main purpose of a potlatch is to redistribute wealth among the leader and the guests. Generally, a feast is also part of a potlatch."

Posted by: cal2 at April 16, 2011 9:21 PMHAH!
Defense up $5 billion?
EPA off by 16 per cent?
If I didn't know better it would sound like he's starting to become a real President.
Given the size of the US defense budget, that's actually a small cut, but probably do-able with the draw-downs in Iraq and Afghanistan and withdrawing from Libya.
As for poor Glenn Hurowitz, my heart weeps crocodile tears. It's such a magical moment when delusion hits reality. Glenn's eco-fantasy Great Bear Forest log just hit the big circular saw-blade. Never mind, Glenn, you can always hope for Jerry Brown during the next go-round, and good luck with that one.
From all appearances, it looks like the Republicans got most of what they wanted in the budget cutting deal. We can expect more of this now that the US is bumping against the statutory debt ceiling. In future years, the White House is going to be a lot weaker in expanding spending in federal budgets, given the necessity of steering an increase in national debt through the House while it has a Republican majority.
Posted by: cgh at April 16, 2011 9:22 PMObama is a piece of shit and idealistic gaia loving useful idiot students are a his toilet bowl.
They will never know the reality of their situation.

Posted by: Cal at April 16, 2011 11:18 PMI fear the students who helped depose Mubarak are getting an even shorter shrift from their Muslim brotherhood idols.

Yeah, but like it or not they are still going to have to face the Grimm when they get older.

So no one's waiting for Obama any more. We've realized that in the great battle between Big Bird and Big Oil, President Obama is Snuffleupagus -- our imaginary friend.
They are finally waking up! Next step: matching words to actions.
