The un-CBC

SunTV News is scheduled to go to air on April 18 - less than a month from now - but whether you'll be able to actually see it is another matter altogether. BC Blue has provided a helpful list here of phone numbers and links to local cable and satellite providers across the country.

Contact your provider and let them know in no uncertain terms that you want to see SunTV News, and that if they don't carry it you'll switch to a cable/satellite provider that does.

Don't see Star Choice on the list! (?)

Posted by: Snagglepuss at March 22, 2011 11:07 PM

Starchoice is Shaw now, will be on channel 326

Posted by: Unclemeat at March 22, 2011 11:11 PM

Sun TV promised new and exciting then promptly added The Jackal to their lineup, thereby delivering the exact opposite. They don't see a single red cent from me until they turf the loser.

Posted by: Catsmeat Kinsmellya at March 22, 2011 11:13 PM

Snagglepuss, "Star Choice" was the former name of "Shaw Direct."

Posted by: EBD at March 22, 2011 11:14 PM

Who needs TV anyway? Will they broadcast on the Net?

Posted by: Louise at March 22, 2011 11:25 PM

They could be going live on air in the middle of an election - could be very interesting. If they just stick to the facts and call their competition on any factual omissions and misstatements they will grow viewership and credibility very rapidly.

Posted by: Gord Tulk at March 22, 2011 11:29 PM

Rogers will be carrying it in HD on channel 567, no info yet on how much it will cost. But Rogers is going to provide the service.

Posted by: The grey Lady at March 22, 2011 11:33 PM

GREAT!!!! I called Shaw about Satellite reception of Sun TV News and was told just 2 days ago that they had not make up their minds as yet. I really hope the info. that it will be on 326.

Gloom!! Just called Shaw here in BC and they knew nothing about whether they would carrying it or not.

Posted by: Pat at March 22, 2011 11:45 PM

I called east link 6 weeks ago and today. They never heard of Sun TV News.I told her they better get it or I will cancel their service along with a ton of other people. She said she will talk to marketing.
I told them I am sick to death of CBC and am forced to pay for it.
Something smell fishy already.

Posted by: Ontario Girl at March 22, 2011 11:48 PM

I'm with Louise. I'm not signing up for propaganda / sleaze vendors like CBC and CTV and Global just to get Sun TV. Goes double if they have catsmeat on the payroll. What were they thinking?

I won't be signing up for any Canadian cable or satellite again. I'd need a guarantee that not one of those networks nor any of the production companies that provide the filth they broadcast would get one red cent out of the deal.

Will SunTV be streaming or carried by any foreign satellite providers?

Posted by: crjc at March 22, 2011 11:54 PM

I don't watch TV.
Stopped watching in the spring of 2000.
Watching TV turns your brains to cheese.

Posted by: Oz at March 23, 2011 12:03 AM

Good grief, I cannot WAIT to see SUN TV News. I am so sick of our useless, boring, complacent CTV & CBC news services. They're absolutely awful and are the reason so few Canadians follow current events.

Posted by: Mike in Calgary at March 23, 2011 12:05 AM

I highly doubt Sun will be any different than the others.

No phone calls, no letters, no subscriptions.

I've seen mentions of their hiring... NO THANKS SUN!

Posted by: Jim at March 23, 2011 12:09 AM

Unclemeat, EBD, thanks.
Guaranteed, I'll be pressing for SunTV News provision!

Posted by: Snagglepuss at March 23, 2011 12:13 AM

Regardless what you think of TV, make the call as EBD suggests ;)

Posted by: ron in kelowna ∴ at March 23, 2011 12:14 AM

I e-mailed Eastlink. Will wait for results.

Posted by: gunney99 at March 23, 2011 12:36 AM

I will call Shaw and demand access to SUN TV. I have been looking for a reason to cancel my cable, this may be it.

Posted by: Abe Froman at March 23, 2011 12:49 AM

Shaw told me they hadn't decided yet either. Bottom line is that Shaw will have it. Albertans won't tolerate having to watch CBC knowing that Sun TV is there.

Posted by: Craig Smith at March 23, 2011 1:07 AM

Shaw already has Sun TV listed on their lineup. Effective March 2011.

Do you know whether you can watch HD TV if you don't have an HD TV? Can you still get it only not in HD?

Posted by: Pat at March 23, 2011 1:30 AM

Pat

You can watch HD stations on Telus TV, on a standard def TV. Can't do that on Shaw, at least not a year ago when I changed to the better service.

Posted by: DanBC at March 23, 2011 1:40 AM

Can we expect anything more than the usual news readers calling upon the usual leftist MSM
Parliament Hill and provincial capital blowhards to recite talking points spoon fed to them?
The opinion shows might have promise but they need more than the formula three political
stooges talking over each other to the bemusement of some useless host.

A long ago "hit show" was the "Shulman File" that pulled no punches and let the blood flow where it might.
One fab show featured a particular agitator originally from India whose purpose in life was playing the race
card on the Toronto Police in as many ways as possible. He had just finished a diatribe on the "racist" police
recruit height restrictions when Morty Shulman dropped the bomb: Did the miscreant know the height restrictions
of the New Delhi police, in his hometown? His jaw dropped as Morty informed him he had spoken to the police
chief there that very day and guess what? The New Delhi P.D. minimum height was even higher than Toronto's!
On the fadeout he deflated like a fat balloon mumbling multicult nonsense while Shulman giggled.

Posted by: Sgt Lejaune at March 23, 2011 2:05 AM

What is this "television" you speak of?

Seriously... Why should I care about another bad TV news station?

I've already got plenty that I don't watch. f* 'em all.

Posted by: djb at March 23, 2011 2:27 AM

Sun TV was touted as "FoxNewsNorth".
Well, it could be a better version if they even try halfway.
ANYTHING to counter CTV, CBC, et al would be fine with me.

Posted by: Snowbunnie at March 23, 2011 2:27 AM

Mike in Calgary at 12:05 AM: "Good grief, I cannot WAIT to see SUN TV News. I am so sick of our useless, boring, complacent CTV & CBC news services. They're absolutely awful and are the reason so few Canadians follow current events."

You want current events updated every five minutes to to news.google.ca. Television is yesterday's technology. Just one more reason to dismantle our Grandmother's Corpse (CBC).

Posted by: Louise at March 23, 2011 2:37 AM

"go to"

Posted by: Louise at March 23, 2011 2:38 AM

BTW, Google serves up several option per topic. Unless CBC is the only Canadian one, I make it a point not to go to their website. Most of the big Canadian media websites commentators are blatantly anti-Conservative Party. Seems none of them have figured out they are operating in a brave new world where we can get our news from sites as far away as Russia or India. The fact that they allow these comments on their websites suggest they have a) turned off a majority of Canadians, and b) haven't understood that by publishing them they have endorsed them.

The MSM. Always our betters. Good riddance.

Posted by: Louise at March 23, 2011 2:50 AM

If the regular Sun TV is any indication Sun TV News might as well have their studios in Melonville. I hold out little hope for anything of quality coming from that particular organization. What Cananda needs is a TRUE Fox News North but that is no where near what we will be getting.

Posted by: PB at March 23, 2011 5:45 AM

My fear now is that "technical" problems will postpone Sun News until after the election. Beware of lefties in high places!

Posted by: Garfield at March 23, 2011 6:23 AM

you're all aware that CTV and Global are the same company, right?

global can hardly be called left wing.

at the same time, is the left not allowed to have it's own media?

sun will be very similar to global, if not slightly more low brow.

Posted by: Neuter Your Nameplates at March 23, 2011 6:25 AM

"if not slightly more low brow."

If you are under the impression that your current news choices - global, etc., - are "high brow" then I beg you, please neuter more than your name plates in the interests of Darwin's principles.

Posted by: whit seven at March 23, 2011 6:35 AM

I haven't confirmed it myself, but on the SunTV FB page, a lady posted that Eastlink was carrying it.

Posted by: AtlanticJim at March 23, 2011 6:46 AM

CTV and Global are the same company? Someone better inform their respective owners then. I am pretty sure the Shaw Communications and CTVGlobeMedia would be interested to know they are the same company......

And yeah, Global CAN be called left wing.

Posted by: AtlanticJim at March 23, 2011 6:53 AM

Global is relentlessly left-wing and most of their shows are filth. Ditto CTV and CBC.

Email sent.

Posted by: crjc at March 23, 2011 7:27 AM

My email to Shaw was responded to quite quickly:

"We have not been told any specific channels that are coming up soon but what I will do is put in a request to the head office on your behalf for that channel. The more people we have showing interest the better so if you know anyone else that would like that channel or any other channels they should email us as well. Every little bit helps to get a channel carried."

Posted by: Lorne at March 23, 2011 7:47 AM

I still like to watch Marcia, er CTV NewsNet, but cringe everytime I happen to see Craig Oliver opine on Canadian politics.

Looking forward to Sun TV although if it's p/o any new "news package", I may drop my current news package that includes Fox.

Posted by: PhilM at March 23, 2011 7:47 AM

You also need to include Access Communications in Saskatchewan. www.accesscomm.ca

Initially Shaw told me 2 days ago they basically knew nothing about Sun TV, so I emailed them back with the launch date and told them no Sun TV my business goes elsewhere.
Just received the following reply from Shaw - their tone seems to have changed:
"We appreciate your thoughts regarding this. We assure you that we do our best to provide channels our customers will enjoy. However we are still in the middle of negotiations for Sun News. We cannot confirm a launch date until all negotiations are complete. Once we have more information on this, we will certainly communicate this to our customers through our web site. We appreciate your continued patience."

I sent Shaw an EMail. I watch Fox all the eime it would be nice to get Sun-TV

Posted by: RL at March 23, 2011 9:45 AM

Sent a email to Sask Tel Max. I offered the opinion that if they are willing to offer the Oprah Winfrey Network (I will never watch this one) then a Canadian all news channel should be a given. Their response and my comments will be forwarded to the minister for Sask Tel.

Thanks for that, Greig (9:36).

Other commenters, please feel free to post verbatim any responses you receive from your cable/satellite providers.

Gen Lee: That's SunTV, not Sun TV News. IIRC, that's not the same thing.

Posted by: Another Calgary Marc at March 23, 2011 10:07 AM

I called Shaw and they, at least the agent I spoke with, said they don't know anything about the new channel yet but there was a good likelihood, due to Canadian content, that it would be carried in a regular package. I was able to put in a request for it. I watch very little T.V. and may never turn it on but I think the choice should be there. Canadians. We're all about choice, aren't we?

Posted by: Thomas_L...... at March 23, 2011 10:15 AM

This seems to be an emerging theme, that certain providers are somehow (*wink-wink*) unaware of this "new channel."

Perhaps we can rectify this.

Posted by: EBD at March 23, 2011 10:27 AM

Eastlink is playing the game as well ala We know nothing. Hopefully one of the other cable networks in NS shall carry Sun News if not I hope they allow people to get internet subscriptions.

Posted by: Rose at March 23, 2011 10:38 AM

It's hilarious that the Sun News Network is purchasing its international content from CNN.

Posted by: Davenport at March 23, 2011 11:13 AM

If this is anything like the episode we had with WildTV we're in for a long of haul of useless and meaningless excuses.

Posted by: the bear at March 23, 2011 11:19 AM

Sounds like a silly question, but how about rabbit ears if you are local to T.O.?

I can pick up CTV and CBC locally in Toronto on rabbit ears (and a couple other channels), albeit sometimes fuzzy and poor quality I could care less 'cause I'm really interested in content over picture quality.

Anybody know if SUN will have an old-fashioned transmission antenna? At least rabbit ears are a a fix until it becomes widely available on cable etc. (which I'm sure the anti-free-speech fascists will do their best to block as long as possible).

Posted by: ricardo at March 23, 2011 11:20 AM

I emailed the following to Shaw Direct a few minutes ago.
..................

My understanding is that SUN TV News will come on line in April this year.

I have been a Star-Choice (now Shaw ) customer for a number of years and will subscribe to the new SUN TV news channel.

Will Shaw Direct carry that channel and if they do will I be able to substitute it in place of CBC?

Posted by: Joe Molnar at March 23, 2011 11:35 AM

Eastlink heard from me as well.

Posted by: eastern paul at March 23, 2011 11:39 AM

It is not at all unusual for cable/sat companies to play it all close to the chest with new channels.

Eastlink had "no information" about History in HD a week after they started carrying it in HD. I called every couple months to find out if and when they were going to carry it in HD. I only found out it was there when a guy at work mentioned he had stumbled across it.

Posted by: AtlanticJim at March 23, 2011 11:43 AM

VHF rabbit ears can pick up 13 local channels, add a little round UHF antenna and you can pick up 125 local channels. Jus' sayin'...

Posted by: ricardo at March 23, 2011 11:49 AM

Sun news must have this covered already. If not, and if an email campaign causes a cable company to change their behavior, that makes for a great story once the channel goes online: UNCHARACTERISTICALLY, CANADIAN CABLE CARRIERS LISTEN TO THEIR CUSTOMERS!!

Posted by: max at March 23, 2011 12:05 PM

Just heard back from Sask Tel that there is no plans to carry Sun News on Max. I would encourage any Max customers to start flooding them with emails as they indicated that market demand would determine if they carry it or not.

Posted by: western canadian at March 23, 2011 12:11 PM

Shaw here does not have it on their list of things to do. Told them Sun or no Shaw.

Posted by: ron in kelowna ∴ at March 23, 2011 12:32 PM

The response I rec'd from Bell ExpressVu satellite:

" We understand that you would
like to see SUN News channel added to Bell Satellite TV?s channel
lineup. We are pleased to assist you with your concern.

Bell Satellite TV strives to offer a diverse selection of programming to
our customers. Please note that a decision to add more channels to our
current channel line-up is based on the following criteria:

- Availability of the channel in Canada
- Cost of providing the channel
- Viewer interest
- Providing satisfaction to a maximum amount of viewers
- Programming duplication
- Space the feed occupies on our satellite transponders

At this time, we do not offer this channel on our service. However, you
will be pleased to know that we have forwarded your channel suggestion
to the Marketing Department for further review and consideration."

FYI - Bell now controls CTVGlobe Media, since ExpressVU alreay carries CTV NewsNet, I really don't think they'll want to add competition to their own network.

If they don't add it, for a reasonable price I will look into an anti-competition complaint.

Posted by: Al the fish in MB at March 23, 2011 1:07 PM

Oz pretty well stated my sentiments early in this thread.

I figure if SunTV New does produce anything worthy of my attention, there will be a link posted here, and I can view it on line.

I'm rural, so I don't have cable, and I don't want satellite. I felled the TV antenna a couple of year ago, and the metal went for scrap.

Oh and another thing. Some have complained about the fact that Warren Kinsella is in the host lineup for Sun TV News. Warren is certainly not my favourite Liberal...come to think of it I can not think of any Liberal that in the modern stable of Liberals who would fit that billing as they are no longer freedom loving classical liberals, but have become pornographers of statism. That being said, Fox News does have its token liberals. Think Allen Coombs (sp) or Geraldo.

I get Fox News and with some exception it gets old pretty quick. Lots of repeat broadcasting. The Red Eye guy Greg? is a complete moron.

IMO Sun News will get old the same way. Rebroadcasting is essentially zero cost broadcasting.

Also there is that minor issue of the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (aka speech and thought fascists). Sure it is a 'voluntary' membership under the shadow of the CRTC.

To think that certain Rabble, Mansbridgites and Craig Oliver groupies aren't gearing up to inundate CBSC & CRTC with complaints of 'hate speech' is naive.

Further the voluntary self pre-censorship by editors and on-air presenters is already built into pre-production meetings.

Get ready for lots of reminders about 'fairness' and 'balance' and 'spreading lies' from the usual lefties, academics and proooooogresssivessss.

In summary after a break-in period get ready for a lot of bland. JMO

I agree Louise. The media will be my main focus after the Sun TV News' debut and during the coming election. I have a feeling Global, CTV and CBC won't bother trying to hide their biases anymore. If Sun TV News offers a nice balance compared to the other networks, here's hoping they gain 50% of the Canadian market like Fox News has with the US market.

Posted by: Ken (Kulak) at March 23, 2011 6:53 PM

Since there are other carriers that will carry SUNTV, I see no need to try to pressure Shaw into doing so. The day SUNTV is available on another carrier and not on Shaw is the day I cancel my Shaw subscription.

Posted by: Enkidu at March 23, 2011 7:15 PM

I'd just cancel now if they can't give an affirmative and tell them to call back when they've got it with an incentive discount. Everybody do it now. Their retention departments will scream up the chain till it gets fixed. Be firm and resolute and say no to any incentives until you have a guarantee you get exactly what you want (which should also include a package that excludes what you don't want).
