Lorne Gunter, one of our best columnists, poops on the Liberals' (and many others', including academics and pundits who should know better) parade:
Libs believe the world waits for Canada’s Egypt stanceA daydream, courtesy of Liberal Foreign Affairs critic Bob Rae [a pretty smart fellow these days, good on Afstan, but still drinking some of that Kool-Aid]...
In a fireworks’ burst of elation, pro-democracy protestors erupt with joy. Canada has spoken. The crisis is averted. Ruefully, but non-violently, pro-Mubarak forces drop their shoulders and slink out of Tahrir square. What is there left for them to do? Canada has had its say. That settles everything. There is now no hope of preserving the regime. They know Canada’s intervention has settled the matter definitively.
Peace and democracy break out and everyone lives happily ever after.
Of course, all of the above is a mocking hallucination...
For 40 years, the Liberals have deluded themselves into believing that the world looks to Canada as its moral beacon because of the Liberals’ enlightened international policies. It was never so, but the Grits cling to this daydream even now...
Or as I put it elsewhere recently with reference to Jumpin' Jack Layton and Afstan:
...Posted by Mark at February 3, 2011 3:28 PMAs for “our experience in resolving conflicts”, can anyone name any serious international conflict in, say, the last twenty years that Canada has played a major role in sorting out? To my mind yet another example of many Canadians’ thoughtless, in fact ignorant, ego(t)ism. Blowing a horn that only we hear; check the index of non-Canadian books on international issues.
watching the news last nite i noticed the only thing they showed of the debate in the commons was foreign affairs minister bob rae speaking OH sorry critic.
As thats the way they portraid it Cannon shown but not speaking Only Rae.
So yes in the media eyes Only Liberals know about foreign affairs
One of the recollections I have when visiting Egypt a few years ago was that Egyptians made no distinction between Canada and the US. They referred to "American" (as in North American). As for Canada, the only reference they had in that regard was "Canada Dry".
The Canadian left is really delusional.
Posted by: Joey at February 3, 2011 4:10 PMAverage foreign national when told about Canada's position on an international issue:
"Canada?"
"I can't place it."
It'd be nice if Canada did have that, really.
Of course, that would require first-rate military spending, because you don't get to "solve conflicts" without a first-rate military.
You need troops to do it, and you need transport, and you need support.

Posted by: john begley at February 3, 2011 4:20 PMAnd Bob Rae is a crypto-Communist.
Barbara Amiel declared just that in the Toronto Sun when Rae was putting Ontario into the tank while he was ND Premier.
Odd, really - GEORGE Ignatieff probably had a little bit to do with the Suez Crisis, not much, but possibly a little. Duke Michael, on the other hand, is just clueless.
Posted by: John Lewis at February 3, 2011 4:27 PMThe "Canadian idiot syndrome" has always been the Liberal backbone.
We are like the rich village idiots to the rest of the world. To be used and abused. The only thing a Third World nation needs do is tell Canadians that they are “very friendly, so smart, lucky & of the highest standards” then the bank vault opens and red carpet rolls out.
In reality Liberal Canadians are a laughing stock to the non-liberal Third World, an easy sucker via a sad story and a little overt patronizing.
Bob Ray has the scruples of a jackal with the ability to sound intelligent.... but only to those who don't listen to his words, but only how they sound strung together.
Posted by: Bob Ronluk at February 3, 2011 4:35 PMBob Ray has the scruples of a jackal with the ability to sound intelligent.... but only to those who don't listen to his words, only how they sound strung together.
Posted by: Bob Ronluk at February 3, 2011 4:38 PMI stated yesterday that if MSM continued to narrate the unrest in Egypt with a pro-Muslim Brotherhood biasness the people would take said media to task for their reporting and lo and behold western media is being run out of Egypt. Of course the Libs expect us to puplicly announce our support for the Muslim Brotherhood right?
Posted by: Rose at February 3, 2011 4:47 PMLet's assume for a moment that Egypt or the world DID want our opinion. Does one think they really care? Reporters are being attacked in Egypt. That's a taste of things to come. What would our opinion do if there is no muscle behind it or if no one cares to follow it?
Posted by: Osumashi Kinyobe at February 3, 2011 4:50 PMI heard Bob Rae on my car radio this morning stuttering and spluttering about how badly the Canadian government was handling the crisis in Egypt. I nearly threw up.
I did see red. I thought, "Who the hell does this washed up jerk of a politician think he is?" His delivery was halting, as though he had lost his script but knew he had to cover all of the Left-lib talking points. Bob Ronluk, he didn't even sound intelligent; hanging around the Liberal locker room, he's lost even the ability to do that.
I wish this guy would just butt out. Lurking stage left, he's a has-been leader and, now, a Librano leader-in-waiting past his sell-by date. Maybe he'd be better off hawking his skills tickling the ivories instead of dragging our political life through the mud.
Bob Rae's a nasty piece of work, every bit as enamored of his silver spoon as Michael Ignatieff is of his. He's not in any way intent on the good governance of Canada -- because if he was, he'd be assisting the CPC and Prime Minister Harper. He's only concerned with tearing down our government and bitching and carping about them, hoping he can (quietly) wrest the LPC leadership from Iggy, and grab power for the Librano$.

Posted by: Texas Canuck at February 3, 2011 5:35 PMIs Bob Rae, Canadas Great White Dope at it again, was Justin Turdough not available to the Libsuk Toronto media twits? Myself and thousands of others wait with baited breath for all prognostications from someone so deep in knowledge. Oh yeah, Canadas white groundhog came out and saw a michrophone.
Posted by: bartinsky at February 3, 2011 6:00 PMBat.. Looks like Commie Broadcast Corpse is putting Rae up for Iggy Fool's replacement. I think they know they bit into a sour pickle with the Igg.
Posted by: happy Infidel_today-meh-not so much. at February 3, 2011 6:21 PMDuring the Copenhagn climate circus, the media and others were all up in arms over how Canada (read Conservatives) was such an embarrasment. I went to the Copenhagen on-line newspaper to see what was being said, Nothing, nada, zilch,Canada was not being mentioned at all.
Today's weenies are fronm the same mold,or mould.
Posted by: wallyj at February 3, 2011 6:25 PMDidn't the last time Canada interfered in Egypt the West lost the Suez canal under Liberal Lester Pearson. Eisenhower in his memoirs stated he shouldn't have forced France and the UK to give up the canal and to allow Nasser to become the dictator.
Nasser ushered in 50 years of socialist nationalization and condemning Egypt to what the Liberals always want yet are astounded each time when, as in Russia, Eastern Europe, China, their socialist policies cause the collapse of a nation.
We are seeing this taking place perfectly in Ontario, huge growing bureaucracy, high taxes, massive public debt, ever spreading nanny state, have-not status and a dying middle class leading to the Liberal utopia of the ruling elite.
McGuinty is just finishing what Rae started.

Posted by: Joe at February 3, 2011 6:43 PMWhen I was a young army captain, about twenty years ago, I went to staff school in Toronto and for one assignment I wrote a paper stating that peace keeping was a total waste of time and effort. I gave a brief recap of every peace keeping mission Canada had ever been involved in, what was going on in those places now, and why we needn't have bothered. Of course this attitude helps explain why never went any farther than captain and am now an electrician.
Posted by: minuteman at February 3, 2011 7:05 PMWhen I saw Boob Rae's comments yesterday an old adage came to mind "Better to sit quietly and have people think you're a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt." This was a typical example of Liberal "intelligensia". The only problem with Gunter's article is that Boob Rae, however he pictures himself, is not the Government of Canada and the Liberal party of Canada do not speak for all Canadians.
Posted by: Antenor at February 3, 2011 7:05 PM"Either you people smarten up over there or we're going to show you pictures of Bob Rae frolicing naked."
Cue: Unicorns pooping carebears that are peeing lollipops and everyone hugging and smiling as the end result.
The Liberal words will mean as much as flatulence in a Mosque.

Rae best be careful he's meddling into foreign affairs yet again and they don't like Nanny Nationer's upsetting their rice bowl of power.

Posted by: set you free at February 3, 2011 7:44 PMCan't you just picture the leaders of the Muzzy brotherhood and Hamas sitting around wringing their hands, saying 'what will Canada thinks' jeez guy's Iffy is gonna be sooooo angry.
Posted by: robins111 at February 3, 2011 7:46 PMAnd the world trembles when Canada takes a tough stand. Right! Having travelled pretty much all over the world, I know from personal experience that most know nothing about Canada, even its location on the map, and for those who do know a bit they lump us in with the Americans. Nowadays any international reputation we may have is being a haven for bogus refugees and a door to the United States. As for being insignificant on the world scene, it matters not in the least, for that is just the way things are.
Posted by: Alain at February 3, 2011 8:26 PMEveryone knows about Canada. That's the place where you can be a citizen and get rescued by when your homeland turns to shiite.
Oh yeah, also get your parents free medical and a pension.
Posted by: Texas Canuck at February 3, 2011 8:33 PMWe are a small country of 34 million people and pack the punch of a 80 year old woman. Why would anyone think that the rest of the world gives a rats ass what we think or how we feel on current world events. We saw how important we were when Portugal beat us out on the security counsel. We dont have a Army, Navy or Air force worth mentioning and have more generals in Ottawa than tanks in the country. The things we are known for is that we are suckers for all immigrants, we welcome draft dodgers, we love gays, we will water down our own identity for any minority for a few votes and we no longer have any idea what it means to be Canadian. And oh yea.....the most important issues we face are obesity and second hand smoke. We have to ride bicycles with helmets on and pointed lawn darts are outlawed. OOOH ya....we are definately a force to be feared on the world stage.

..... foggy image of mountains, mounties and moose.
I quoted this to my NDP supporting spouse and she laughed loudly. Had a great laugh myself. Both London born and love Canada, citizens both.
Always remember in England the film The Northwest Mounted, with Preston Foster and Gary Cooper, plus lovely Paulette Goddard. Only thing I saw resembling that, was the blooming snow in Northern Ontario.
Maybe we are all better off for our image. Except the rotten fools who fouled up the G20.
We ain't so bad! (chuckle).
Oh yeah, on second thoughts it was Bob Rae who put Ontario into the red and Standard and Poors were going to declare us heading to bankruptcy. He has lots of brass, has Bob.
