Reader Tips

Here's a short (ten-minute) film, with historical footage, providing a bit of the context of the Hungarian Revolt of 1956.

The Ottawa Sun:

"CBC employees earn on average 39% more than the average Canadian, according to information obtained through access to information from the state broadcaster."

Hands up if you're surprised.

'Hands up', appropriately, is the directive when you're being robbed!

From Stuart Schwartz's Sarah Palin and the Haters of American Normal:

"What gives (Palin) the right to be happy, asks Wurtzel? (a blogger for the Atlantic - EBD.) Palin, who is 'not very thoughtful, not very bright,' is so darned ordinary that she doesn't understand the horrors of American life. But Wurtzel does, having first attracted attention with her New York Times bestseller chronicling the depravities visited upon her by the fruits of American exceptionalism. You see, Wurtzel survived the horror of being raised on Manhattan's Upper West Side, the shame of enduring the nation's best private schools, the depravity of having parents who paid for summer camps and Harvard -- small wonder she plunged into 'catatonic despair, masochism, and hysterical crying.' Doesn't Palin know, Wurtzel cries, that...America sucks? Karl Rove knows, Keith Olbermann and Kathleen Parker and Elliot Spitzer and Barack Obama know -- that's why they're smart.

"But Sarah Palin is not Elizabeth Wurtzel smart. Nor is she Karl Rove savvy, Keith Olbermann articulate, or Barack Obama cool. No, Sarah Palin is just plain normal. And not just any normal -- she is American normal, the kind of normal that wrenched a nation away from a calcified European aristocracy and established what Abraham Lincoln described as 'a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.' It is no coincidence that the United States is the single nation that, for the entirety of its existence, has had immigrants fighting to be included in a community structured upon individual 'Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,' as our Declaration of Independence puts it. And now that normal is being challenged by those who want to control every aspect of American life."

Every Christmas for the last 57 years, the local chapter of the Knights of Columbus in the Pennsylvania town of Canonsburg have assembled a Nativity scene in the borough building, the equivalent of a city hall. This year, though, a woman named Megan Hartley complained that the display was disrespectful to non-Christians. Local officials, fearing a lawsuit, took it down.

Hartley: "I'm standing up for my rights and for the rights of others and if that ruins something for someone else I think they are looking too far into it."

Website The Blaze looks at Ms. Hartley:

Hartley is a college grad, single mom and a fiction writer who especially enjoys dabbling in the supernatural, including a seemingly unhealthy fascination with demons, vampires and gore. In one of her short stories posted online, Hartley describes the point of view of a demon in Hell describing the mutilation of a human.

Okay. Take down the Nativity creche. She doesn't like it.

Local officials, fearing a lawsuit, took it down.

So, fear, rather than pride or commitment to serving the electorate, is now motivating what politicians do?

Posted by: PiperPaul at December 13, 2010 11:33 PM

EBD @ 11:26, those local officials are milquetoast cowards.

Your 1956 Hungarian Revolt clip had an interesting comment by the news commentator regarding President Eisenhower's statement about Hungary being in the Soviet sphere of interest and therefore implied the rebels were on their own.

*Interesting*..... Things seem to be speeding up quickly now, with Napolitano at the helm of the Department of Homeland Security.

There's an app for snitching.

"As if the government's surveillance on our every day life is not bad enough, a Florida company called Citizen Concepts has created the PatriotApp 'that empowers citizens to assist government agencies in creating safer, cleaner, and more efficient communities via social networking and mobile technology... on the belief that citizens can provide the most sophisticated and broad network of eyes and ears necessary to prevent terrorism, crime, environmental negligence, or other malicious behavior.' In other words, to create an Orwellian state where neighbors can spy on each other to create a climate where we are ever suspicious of one another."

re. EBD @10:21 - I didn't realize Elizabeth Wurtzel blogged for The Atlantic. No wonder it's so hard to take these people seriously. I read Prozak Nation (so you don't have too). Wurtzel is a proudly, brazenly, catastophically self-absorbed hysteric; her only selling point is her own exhibitionistic neuroticism and misery, so no wonder she resents Palin. People like her invariably believe they're very brilliant, based on no evidence of any kind; actually, while Wurtzel's brighter than Heather Mallick, I suppose, she's dumber than Sarah for sure. The sort of worthless snob who gives crazy self-obsessed nasty arrogant Planet Manhattanites a bad name. Sometimes I wonder whether chicks like her - and Heather - don't get hired by misogynists just to make the rest of us look bad; honestly, it's embarassing. She's probably a bunny-boiler.

This really makes me feel better about almost never bothering to read The Atlantic.

Thanks for the clip on the Hungarian Revolution. It is of special interest to me because of my Hungarian ancestry. I was born in Canada of parents who emigrated to Canada in the 1930s. I still remember the anxiety felt by the Hungarian-Canadian community as this was going down.

In 2005 I finally managed a short visit to this beautiful little country and had a chance to see the towns where my parents came from.

I was quite impressed at how well everything had been rebuilt after all the destruction from the previous 60 years or so.

My apologies if this video of the Stockholm bombings has already been discussed but I've been out of town and out of the news loop.

Gotta love how the "journalist" immediately jumps to the Victim Card and immediately speculates what Swedes have done to provoke this terrorism. How is that any different - and any less sick - than asking the parents of a murdered child what she did to provoke her attacker?!

Mugs, all is OK here in Sarnia but all points east are a mess. I`m presently monitoring Sarnia airport tower and can confirm the rescue helicopters are in the process of extricating stranded motorists along hwy. 402.

For those who may criticize the intelligence of motorists in this part of Bantario, remember that the bulk of traffic is commercial in nature.

Any of you who live in Tranna, be prepared to see a spike in gas prices as the transmission of locally refined oil has been curtailed. Oh, and maybe you will see your garbage piling up. This is the route to the USA that`s taken by your garbage trucks that is dumped in Michigan.

Friends of Canadian Broadcasting even fails to construct a grammatically correct sentence.

"None of his Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries or MPs speak (sic) out without prior approval from the Prime Minister’s Office."

I assume they mean none speaks out. The way it's written, although none of his ministers speaks out, his Secretaries and MPs speak out.

They may be paid 39% more than average Canadians, but they earn less than half as much, even on a good day.

Good article link regarding SP.

I'm not sure if it's a personality quark in me, but the more the 'experts' tell me anything, the less and less I'm believing them. I consider myself a political observer with very little expertise; but, much of the criticism of SP from the right about being 'polarizing' among other things makes sense in my head. I empathize with those that are so scared ishtless that they are weary of a polarizing candidate and want to play it safe. After all, the Dems are hobbled and we'd better not blow-it. Right?

Well, you know what? The more people tell me that "I don't know what I want" the more certain I am that I should not heed that advise. As it stands now, if I had a vote, it would be for SP. Like her, I'd rather "go down fighting" with SP than betray what I stand for and vote a RINO simply to win. Because after all, what are we really winning?

Tony Lombardo, Shooting experts eye multi-gun training

Multi-gun exercises combine marksmanship with a fast-paced obstacle course. Picture rushing through a range, shooting at various targets and using multiple weapons — a rifle, pistol and shotgun, for example. To heighten the realism and boost difficulty, you may be weighed down in full combat gear....

Before accepting a radical overhaul of the world’s leading medical care system, and instead of turning to government as the solution to the widely recognized problems of health care, these important unheralded facts about America’s health care system should be carefully considered.

Fact No. 1:

Americans have better survival rates than Europeans for most common as well as rare cancers....

Fact No. 2:

Americans have lower cancer mortality rates than Canadians....

Fact No. 3:

Americans have better access to treatment for chronic diseases than patients in other developed countries....

"don't get hired by misogynists just to make the rest of us look bad;"

NO WAY MAMBA, these unibroads are an anathema to manhood and men everywhere (misogynists included). Men prefer beautiful, smart, loyal and strong women. Liberal men are simply f@gs, with no idea how to attract women, and guys like Bill Clinton are 'guys' simply using liberalism as a means to power and sex.

The real question is, how did you women let these freaks infiltrate your organization, and why do you let them speak for you?(generally speaking of course)

Sarah Palin is hated by the ruling class because she wants nothing to do with the Republicans and Democrats that have turned politics in the US into a rigged game - heads they win, tails you lose. She will, if elected, represent the people, and upset the cozy insider game in Washington, the way she did in Juneau. The beauty thing is, she has shown she will fight the establishment Republicans. That's why she must be " taken down ".

I hope she gets the nomination. The chances for America turning around are fading fast.

My two cents worth to the PM regarding the CBC
-------------------

Dear Prime Minister Harper;

Please accept my best wishes to you and your wife Laureen and your lovely children, during this Christmas Season.

My Christmas wish would be for the disolving of the whole CBC apparatus as it's founding mandate is not longer necessary. It has become an impediment to impartial news dissemination and a wholly unwelcome drain on my pocketbook. Charles Adler recently highlighted not only the huge amount of revenue from a variety of government departments (plus advertising it takes in direct competition with private broadcasters), but the outlandish salaries, benefits and perks received by the all too many mandarins apparently required to run this juggernaut.

Now I see that the 'Friends of the CBC' are beginning to lobby for a 'head tax' of $40 for every citizen in Canada.

Frankly Prime Minister, I'm tired of paying for something that I neither need nor appreciate - it's taxation by confiscation and I've had enough.

I would urge you at the first opportunity - hopefully a majority government - to cut this 'corporation' loose and let them sink or swim like everyone else. If they create a product people will pay for great, but it's time for their supporters to put their own money where their eyes and ears are, rather than demand that we subsidize their socialist tastes.

"MPs to investigate CBC"

"By BRIAN LILLEY, Parliamentary Bureau"

"MPs will investigate the CBC and how the state broadcaster releases -- and sometimes refuses -- to reveal information to the public.

Conservative, Bloc and New Democrat MPs all voted Tuesday in favour of having the Commons access to information committee study the CBC in the New Year.

“I wanted to make sure that if we are going to study this that we not only bring CBC executives but bring in a broader cross-section of individuals,” said Tory MP Paul Calandra who tabled the motion calling for the study.

“Canadians expect us to show them how their $1.2 billion a year in subsidies to the CBC is being spent and I think it's high time Parliament got down to it.”

Liberal MPs abstained from the vote. Carolyn Bennett told QMI Agency she abstained over how the motion came about not because her party doesn’t want to study how CBC spends tax dollars.

The committee will meet in the new year and select witnesses. Hearings will likely happen in February or March.

QMI has been running a series of stories on problems with access to information at the CBC including refusals to release some information to the public while other requests see all relevant information stripped out."
