// those who died on 9/11.
For their sakes we cannot tolerate a mosque on or near Ground Zero.
For their sakes loud and clear we say: No mosque here!
For their sakes, we must draw the line. So that New York, rooted in Dutch tolerance, will never become New Mecca. //
There is something perverse about enlisting the dead on your side of an argument, although it is done often enough. The "New York, rooted in Dutch tolerance" bit has some truth. Stuyvesant tried to expel Jewish traders from Brazil, but the Dutch East Indies company ordered that they be allowed given their losses in Brazil & their large investments in the Company.
However, they were restricted from employment in public & retail service and "Jews were not privileged to erect a synagogue" [in manhattan until 1730]
Perhaps that history is why the Park51 initiative has been advised from its start by the Jewish Community Center of Manhattan.
Still it was a well-constructed & mild version of his real position, much of which would not be acceptable to americans in general [which were his real intended audience] however many times the enthusiasts in the crowd cheered.
Posted by: dizzy at September 13, 2010 2:57 AMA quote from Newt GINGRICH at a speech about a month ago:
There should be no mosque near Ground Zero in New York so long as there are no churches or synagogues in Saudi Arabia. The time for
double standards that allow Islamists to behave aggressively toward us while they demand our weakness and sub...mission is over.
The proposed "Cordoba House" overlooking the World Trade Center site – where a group of jihadists killed over 3000 Americans and destroyed one of our most famous landmarks - is a test of the timidity, passivity and historic ignorance of American elites. For example,
most of them don’t understand that “Cordoba House” is a deliberately insulting term. It refers to Cordoba, Spain – the capital of Muslim
conquerors who symbolized their victory over the Christian Spaniards by transforming a church there into the world’s third-largest mosque complex.
Today, some of the Mosque’s backers insist this term is being used to "symbolize interfaith cooperation" when, in fact, every Islamist in
the world recognizes Cordoba as a symbol of Islamic conquest. It is a sign of their contempt for Americans and their confidence in our
historic ignorance that they would deliberately insult us this way. Those Islamists and their apologists who argue for "religious toleration" are arrogantly dishonest. They ignore the fact that more than 100 mosques already exist in New York City. Meanwhile, there are no churches or synagogues in all of Saudi Arabia. In fact no Christian or Jew can even enter Mecca. And they lecture us about tolerance.
If the people behind the Cordoba House were serious about religious toleration, they would be imploring the Saudis, as fellow Muslims, to
immediately open up Mecca to all and immediately announce their intention to allow non-Muslim houses of worship in the Kingdom. They should be asked by the news media if they would be willing to lead such a campaign.
We have not been able to rebuild the World Trade Center in nine years. Now we are being told a 13 story, $100 million mega mosque will be built within a year overlooking the site of the most devastating surprise attack in American history.
Finally where is the money coming from? The people behind the Cordoba House refuse to reveal all their funding sources. America is experiencing an Islamist cultural-political offensive designed to undermine and destroy our civilization. Sadly, too many of our elites are the willing apologists for those who would destroy them if they could.
No mosque.
No self deception.
No surrender.
The time to take a stand is now - at this site on this issue.
It's about Freedom. If Americans truly care about it, then there can be no Victory mosque allowed near the hallowed ground of the WTC.
Mr. Wilders sounds more American than any Democrat politician. Those politicians should feel shame that it took a foreigner to publically express simple truths about the hateful ideology bent on domination (quite aptly referred by long time SDA commenter ET as hiding in the Trojan Horse of Religion). Those truths make it plain why the Victory mosque cannot stand near where innocent blood was spilled in the name of Islam. At least not if Americans still care about what Islam is trying to take from them.
Posted by: Martin B. at September 13, 2010 3:05 AMThere is a discrepancy between the vid and the transcript. I don't know if it was edited out, or for convenience Geert dropped it.Its from the 1:35 mark on the vid.
"Always. Now close your eyes – I know it’s a beautiful day, but close your eyes. I have been told that this day nine years ago was just such a beautiful day -- and remember, or try to remember, or try to imagine the sounds which were heard here on this spot under this same blue sky exactly nine years ago. The sound of shock, the sound of destruction, the sound of panic, the sound of pain, the sound of terror.
Did New York deserve this? Did America deserve this? Did the West deserve this? What, my friends, would you say to people who argue that New York, that America, that the West had itself to blame for those horrible sounds?
There are people in this city who argue this. And they are angry because we are gathered here today to commemorate, to make a stand, to draw the line. My friends, I have come from the other side of the Atlantic to share your grief for those who died here nine years ago. I have not forgotten how I felt that day.
The scenes are imprinted on my soul, as they are on yours.
But our hearts were not broken in the same way as the hearts of the relatives and friends of those who lost their lives here. Many relatives of the victims are here in our midst today.
I wish to take this opportunity to express my deepest and most heartfelt condolences to them and to all of the people of New York and America. Humbly, I stand here before you as a Dutchman and a European.
I, too, however, cannot forget. How can anyone forget?
Let me remind you of the words from Darryl Worley’s 9/11 song. Have you forgotten how it felt that day?
To see your homeland under fire And her people blown away Have you forgotten when those towers fell?
We had neighbors still inside going thru a living hell Worley’s response is our response: No, we will NEVER forget. We are here today because we have not forgotten all the loved ones that were lost and those left to carry on.
And neither has the world. When the forces of Jihad attacked New York, they attacked the world. Among those lost were people from 55 nations, people of every religion and every persuasion. No place on earth had a more multi-ethnic, multi-racial, and multi-lingual workforce than New York’s proud towers.
That is exactly why they were targeted. They constituted an insult to those who hold that there can be no peaceful cooperation among people and nations without submission to Sharia; to those who wish to impose the legal system of Islam on the rest of us.
But New York and Sharia are incompatible. New York stands for freedom, openness and tolerance. New York’s Mayor recently said that New York is “rooted in Dutch tolerance.”
Those are true words. New York is not intolerant. How can it be? New York is open to the world. Suppose New York were intolerant. Suppose it only allowed people of one persuasion within its walls."
.
I am praying Wilders remains alive.....

'A tolerant society is not a suicidal society. ... We must never give a free hand to those who want to subjugate us."
I hope that Bloomberg takes Mr. Wilder's eloquent, truthful words to heart.
(An aside: Mr. Wilders seems to be letting his white hair take ascendancy over his dyed blond locks. I think this is a good move. His words are full of gravitas and letting his natural colour come through also ads gravitas to his demeanor.)

Posted by: batb at September 13, 2010 9:44 AMThis is what the pendulum looks like when it has swung to the left as far as its going to go, and pauses for a moment.
dizzy, you've got to be kidding me bringing up historic intolerance of the Jews from the 1700's in support of the Obama mosque.
You want to know why Geert frickin' Wilders is famous dizzy? He's famous because of people like you. People like you who never, ever miss an opportunity to stick it to squares.
Let the enemy build a triumphal victory monument on the site of their sneak attack, in the name of tolerance and just getting along? Squares are no longer willing to ignore you, dizzy.
See, in the minds of probably 90% of Americans who actually have minds, the Muslim Jihadists crossed -way- over the line on 9/11/2001. Way over. Farther over the line than the Japanese did at Pearl Harbor. It is the full measure of American civility and tolerance that every Muslim in the country wasn't put on a boat or killed in the weeks following 9/11.
Now, nine years later dizzy, you and your fellow Leftists have finally crossed the same line with your defense of the Obama mosque. A mosque built on the vaporized bones of the 9/11 victims, people killed at work by the hate of Muslim barbarians. A mosque built on a Christian grave yard, in truth and in symbol.
That's as far as the political pendulum is going to swing my friend. For good or ill, you boys have stopped it.
Now we have the likes of weasely little Geert Wilders there sniffing the air, looking for a good spot to jump on the gravy train. I actually share your opinion of the man, I think he's just another political animal on the main chance.
But he's not wrong, dizzy. He's 100% right, and he reflects the will of 80+% of America. At least. Everybody who isn't a knee-jerk, hate America professional leftist, basically.
Ride's over dizzy. From here on out there's going to be -less- public tolerance for different cultures and religions, less public money for multi-culti goodness, less power for the Left, less fear of unions, less control for the Ruling Class.
Less government too, if I have anything to say about it. I'd say if you don't want to be living in a full-on right wing police state in ten years, you better get on the tax-cut smaller government bandwagon real quick. Otherwise the Geert Wilderses of the world are going to be counting your cornflakes every morning.
This is the point where it all turns around. We couldn't have done it without you, dizzy. Thanks a bunch pal.
Posted by: The Phantom at September 13, 2010 10:05 AM911 had many aspects...
Because it was New York and the 21st century, the world had a front row seat to see this outrage....unlike S21 in Nom Pen, or Auswitze/Belsen/Dachow.....it was now and here....most pointedly HERE.
The spectre of our enemies openly dancing in the streets...forever removing all doubt as to their mentality/intent.
The "Oh $hit" look on Arafat's face as he claimed to be "shocked...shocked"....no doubt the result of being conditioned to the reality of retaliation.....which to our shame has never been visited on that obvious nest of jihadist sympathizers.
The sad sight of people jumping to certain death to escape the flames....and that dreadful sound of their bodies impact.
The eerie silence of our skys....un-noticed until they were silenced.
The diversion of incoming US airliners to Canada's maritimes....away from Canada and the US major cities but obvious if you look at the map. A process which vastly overwhelmed commercial accommodation.....which triggered a spontaneous reaction by private citizens who not only opened the homes but fetched the stranded from the terminals. These affluent american jet-setters had an immersion course in Canada....by Canada's nicest people...the maritimers. This cemented lasting close relationships between people from very diverse socio-economic elements in OUR society.
I recall the sight of an errant Lear/Gulfstream being escorted into London by a USAF F16. Not a soul questioned it's presence in our skys....it was instantly recognized as "one of ours."
However time dulls, but does not heal wounds, and allows the usual suspects to resurface after only a brief silence.
On 911 we could only guess at the perpetrators and we lacked an identifiable entity to righteously retaliate against.
We know the most part those behind and aiding and abetting this "Corbaba Mosque" obscenity. We have the time to act with force and resolution...
Geert Wilders, like Churchill, is the man of the world needed, at this point, perhaps created by events, like Churchill, with the courage/resolve to rally our resolve.
Posted by: sasquatch at September 13, 2010 10:07 AMUntil I see evidence to the contrary, my opinion of Geert Wilders is that he is a great man who is answering a call to fight for our freedom.
Weaselly politicians don't do what Wilders is doing ... He is risking is life to warn the west of what the Islamaniacs are up to.
Wilders is a man who may well be the Churchill of his time. Certainly all other politicians and leaders are the cowardly Neville Chamberlain sell-outs of their time. Including you Mr. Harper.
We need to be belligerent and intolerant of Islam. As it is with us.
What do you think will happen if the Muslims throw a Jihad and we don't show up?
That's right.
Posted by: Abe Froman at September 13, 2010 10:56 AMSheer courage.
batb, a most cogent observation on the HAIR.
Didn't Glenn Beck trash him -- possibly because of the HAIR and its suhconscious connotations for some people.
I'm forever pulling my hair out over foregone comments and questions of pundits and interviewers. In Wilders, however, it's all there, in just 14 minutes.
Mecca: No infidels, here! No churches here! No synagogues here!
NYC: No mosque here, on these hallowed grounds -- anywhere else in the city, fine. There are over 100 mosques in NYC.
Posted by: Me No Dhimmi at September 13, 2010 12:10 PMabe froman...
of course you are right....Wilders is a brave great man...and so are the likes of Levant and Steyn...and Mccarthy...and Ali and geller and shaidle and BCF and all the rest of the get in your face journalists that scorn those who would employ physical threats to silence their critics...
they got more guts than me to go way out there on the pointy end in order to help us save ourselves...
this is a great time to be alive...we have an undoubted enemy living among us and machinating here and internationally...we have the right and the truth on our side...
eventually events will force our politicos to get on board the train...
David Warren has an interesting column on the significance of the date September 11th to the Islamists. See his column entitled "a bit of history".
Posted by: david lowe at September 13, 2010 12:38 PMFree speech requires four bodyguards?
Only in Muslim-held territory.
Imagine, folks, what it will be like when there is
no more free speech. It is so difficult to
understand why intelligent people, and politicians, cannot see what is at stake here.
It is a precious freedom. Shame it's wasted on dizzy who uses this opportunity to spout nonsense.
But, he will awaken also if this is not stopped.
I'm picturing what it was like in WWII and how very close we were to losing the war. Hitler withdrew the troops from the coast at the exact precise moment, then we knew there was a chance to win.
If the movement to stop the Mosque of Conquest being built succeeds, it could also be the move that will show the west that there is a chance to win this battle we're in.
Mr. Wilders is a very brave man. I don't care what his political aspirations are - he is singing from the same songbook as all sane people, all over the world. Women are treated like vermin by the Mosque crowd, where are the bra burners? Shouldn't they be squawking about their degraded sisters in the cow barns called harem's? Where are dads, husbands, brothers, uncles and grandads who love the little girls (and boys) and women in their lives? Geert is a hero, IMO, he is cheering for the side of Freedom and I cheer with and for him (he is also against anti smoking propaganda, he knows all about the first big tobacco banner - Mr. Hitler). We need men of this caliber here, now, at this time. Mr. Harper, where are you?
Posted by: Jema 54 at September 13, 2010 4:35 PMThere is never tolerance when dealing with Muslims unless it is YOUR tolerance. Muslims and the exercising of their 'faith' Islam is a study of INtolerance, through the ages. They seek to conquer in any manner, using any tool to accomplish their ends. They will sound placating and reasonable UNTIL they get their way. Until they get the power and THEN they put down the hammer of both intolerance and tyranny. Utter capitulation is their aim and they intend to realize their aims.
Our weaknesses are exploited in the name of our own laws and good nature. ENOUGH. Mr. Wilders speaks the language all Americans and Canadians should be speaking. It is a shame and a disgrace that these words are not coming out of the mouths of Mayor Bloomberg and other leaders. That they are silent is a testament to their incompetence and unworthiness to lead people in these dangerous times.
It is absolutely true that Islam as practiced in Arab countries is barbaric, what with stonings, beheadings, honor killings, etc. It is also absolutely true that non-Muslims are not permitted in Mecca, and that Muslim extremists seek to Sharia-ize every place they are. It is further true that there are Muslims in America who would seeks to destroy our government and way of life in favor of what exists in e.g. Saudi Arabia. And it is undeniably true that Muslims attacked the Twin Towers.
But, we learn from the New York Times that Muslims also prayed in the Twin Towers. And, none of the religious vileness that comes with Islam in Arab countries is a reason to protest against the Cordoba house. The developer who bought it, owns it. And he played by the rules in getting the necessary approvals. This is America. You play by the rules and you get the rewards of doing so. And you don't have to answer for other people's misdeeds, either. The Muslims who blew up the World Trade Center are distinct from the ones who are building Cordoba House.
If you don't like the park51 project, don't go there! But lay off people who are abiding by their legal obligations and who want to lawfully use their property as they see fit.
Mark Jay: "The Muslims who blew up the World Trade Center are distinct from the ones who are building Cordoba House."
How do you know?
Posted by: batb at September 13, 2010 10:16 PMBatb: Because under American law, and in accordance with our way of life, they are presumed so.
Once again: in America, a property owner may make such lawful use of it as (s)he may see fit. If I purchase the residential lot adjacent you, I have a right to live there even if you don't like me, or my religion, or the way I wear my hair, or my sexual orientation, or the ugly (but zoning-legal) way I have built and painted my house, or whatever. I am the owner of that property and no one can - or should - tell me what to do with it.
Posted by: Mark Jay at September 14, 2010 7:49 AMMark Jay: "Because under American law, and in accordance with our way of life, they are presumed so."
"Presumed so"? That's a specious argument. We can presume nothing in this case, but need to look at the motives and actions of Imam Rauf.
What has got us into deep trouble in the West, vis a vis Muslim Immigration, is exactly that shallow presumption that their reasons for being in the West are similar to those of our immigrant ancestors and more recent immigrant family members.
Extremist Muslims have been using our laws against us, so all of the former presumptions we used to make about immigrants to North America -- that they were happy to be in a new country, that they were happy to leave behind them partisan strife, that they would work hard and contribute to OUR WAY OF LIFE and bring their children up as Americans or Canadians -- have been turned on their ear. In fact, extremist Muslims mock our way of life and show contempt for us and our culture when they use lawfare to try and impose THEIR way of life (Sharia) on us.
The issue here is not whether Imam Rauf and his followers and backers "may make such lawful use of [his] property as he may see fit." His rights are not in dispute and that has been said repeatedly. Rauf is well within his rights to build Cordoba House at Ground Zero. The more prescient question is, should he? Is it wise to build a mosque at Ground Zero? Almost overwhelmingly, over 70% of, Americans say "No, it's not prudent, it's not wise, it's not compassionate, and it certainly will not build bridges."
So, why is Mr. Rauf hell bent to build this mosque at Ground Zero?
Posted by: batb at September 14, 2010 9:10 AMMark Jay: Check out the YouTube video above of Bill O'Reilly's Fox program on the connection between Imam Rauf and Faiz Khan, ""The truth is we don't know what the project is a monument to." 'Disturbing, to say the least.
What presumptions do you make about these revelations?
