Reader Tips

WBC heavyweight boxing champion Vitali Klitschko, a gentle, multilingual, well-spoken man with a doctorate in sports science, is a hugely popular public figure in the Ukraine. When he began toying with the idea of running for the office ofUkrainian president, his brother Vladimir, the WBO, IBO and IBF heavyweight champion, and also a Ph.D., warned him that while everybody in the Ukraine adores him now, half of the people in the country will suddenly dislike him at the moment he runs for office.

Vladimir's advice was sound, for nothing on earth - save certain comments threads on blogs - is a contentious as professional politics. In tonight's amusement en route to the Tips we span the globe to look at contentious moments in parliamentary politics, starring, in no particular order, the parliamentarians of Bolivia, Mexico, Taiwan, Korea, Sri Lanka, Russia, India, and, last but not least, the Ukraine, where Vitali (aka "Dr. Ironfist") would certainly have tipped the balance of power had he been a parliamentarian.

Kumbaya. You are invited, as always, to provide your Reader Tips in the comments.

Boo!

"Col Muammar Gaddafi has warned that Europe runs the risk of turning 'black' unless the EU pays Libya at least €5 billion (£4.1 billion) a year to block the arrival of illegal immigrants from Africa.

"His remarks, made during a controversial three day visit to Italy, were condemned as 'unacceptable blackmail' by Italian MPs, who likened the demand to the protection money that mafia gangs demand from businesses.

"Speaking at a ceremony in Rome while standing next to Silvio Berlusconi, Italy's prime minister, Col Gaddafi, 67, said that unless his request for money was met, Europe would otherwise become 'another Africa'....

How is it that the Bedouin get’s so much attention in, of all places, Italy?
Could it be that there are some serious quantities of financial instruments involved?

This evening I'm listening to Mike Gallagher discuss Obama's Iraq speech on KRLA. One Extreme Leftist, Donna, just called up and seriously & straightforwardly said that she was convinced that Iraq was much better off under Saddam Hussein. This notion, so frequently put forward by the Left, belittles Muslims more than anyone else I can imagine. It was a beautiful thing to hear Gallagher rip her to shreds!!!

Ukraine should not be referred to as "the Ukraine" since the Soviet collapse. On the same level as referring to "the Canada" or rags referring to "the HMCS ...."
Got tired of pointing out the two of them to MSM with little effect.

A 13-story middle finger
BY Thomas Sowell
The proposed mosque near where the World Trade Center was attacked and destroyed, along with thousands of American lives, would be a 13-story middle finger to America.

It takes a high IQ to evade the obvious, so it is not surprising that the intelligentsia are out in force decrying those who criticize this calculated insult.

Seriously:

"President Obama's top education official urged government employees to attend a rally that the Rev. Al Sharpton organized to counter a larger conservative event on the Mall.

"'ED staff are invited to join Secretary Arne Duncan, the Reverend Al Sharpton, and other leaders on Saturday, Aug. 28, for the 'Reclaim the Dream' rally and march,' began an internal e-mail sent to more than 4,000 employees of the Department of Education on Wednesday."

(...)

"The Washington Examiner learned of the e-mail from a Department of Education employee who felt uncomfortable with Duncan's request.

"Although the e-mail does not violate the Hatch Act, which forbids federal employees from participating in political campaigns, Education Department workers should feel uneasy, said David Boaz, executive vice president of the libertarian Cato Institute.

"'It sends a signal that activity on behalf of one side of a political debate is expected within a department. It's highly inappropriate ... even in the absence of a direct threat,' Boaz said. 'If we think of a Bush cabinet official sending an e-mail to civil servants asking them to attend a Glenn Beck rally, there would be a lot of outrage over that..."

Yes, Sgt Lejaune, when referring to the country, and not the region, it's "Ukraine" and not "the Ukraine." I stand corrected.

Our parliament is so boring. Anybody remember when NDPer Jim Fulton put a fish on Brian Mulroney's seat? That, and some Reform Party guy (whose name I can't remember) going balistic, are about the only thing resembling a full out fist fight we've seen in the House of Commons.

Via Americandigest.org, here's an interesting article suggesting that political correctness can have an effect on poll results, as evidenced by the fact that pollsters may get significantly different results depending on whether a question is asked by a live person or an automated "robo-call." Example: a CNN/Gallup poll using human callers (pollsters) found 52% of respondents to be in favour of same-sex marriage with 46% opposed, while an automated (robo-call) poll found only 33% in favour and 57% against.

Perhaps it's already well-known here but, there's a new, very good news site (much, much better than Bourque) www.nuzcanada.ca It's put out by unabashed conservatives but, so far, they haven't fallen into the trap of lacing their news items with CPC propaganda. Worth a look.

Louise, the Reformer was Darrel Stinson who challenged a sloppy Liberal shitbag named John Cannis to step outside when Cannis called him, without provocation, a racist. I suspect that Stinson was bluffing but, he threw off his coat, crossed the floor, and scared hell out of Cannis who must have outweighed him by 60 pounds.

Laugh of the day...

Francis Russell Wpg Free Press

Canadian Press reported last June that Prime Minister Stephen Harper had lunch with Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes in New York on March 30, 2009. Australian billionaire Murdoch owns Fox News; Ailes, a brass-knuckle Republican stragetist (sic), is its president. Kory Teneckye, Harper's recently-retired communications director, was also present.

...The tone of political discourse, already shifted sharply right with the advent of Conrad Black's National Post in 1998, is about to take a quantum leap further down that road. The signs are numerous and ominous: The internet is already doused daily with the vitriol of thousands of anonymous far-right bloggers who slander and libel politicians, the media and all opponents with vile, often illiterate postings. Parliament and the country's entire political culture is being dug ever deeper into a mire of character assassination, personal insult and attack, smear campaigns, relentless and ruthless partisanship and denigration and demonization of any and all opponents.

Linda McQuaig from the Torstar chimes in ... "There's been a tendency in the Canadian media to dismiss the threat of a Fox News transplant on the grounds Canadians wouldn't fall for that sort of nasty, right-wing extremism," she writes. "But that comforting notion may be naïve." Most people don't have time to follow politics in detail, she continues. "If they hear constant sound bites suggesting global warming is a hoax or public health care just doesn't work, after a while the message starts to seem believable."
She points out the media already blasts Canadians with a steady chorus of right-wing ideas. "A Fox-style network here -- if Harper gets his way -- would turn that into a deafening cacophony."

There’s a BCL (Big City Lib?) in the comments... laugh number two for the day

Posted by: Glenn at September 1, 2010 1:53 AM

Thanks big-time for that, Glenn. Absolutely hilarious, and a really good sign. I wish, though, that I was aware of the URLs of the "*thousands* of anonymous far-right bloggers who slander and libel politicians..."

Funny how the prog worldview works: when the CBC - for example - engages in a non-stop, 24/7, years-long campaign of "character assassination, personal insult and attack, smear campaigns, relentless and ruthless partisanship and denigration and demonization" of the views of millions of conservatives and non-progs, it's just "reporting" and "Trusted...Canadian.." and all that, but when a couple dozen bloggers do something similar, only backed up with evidence, it's a hyperventilation-worthy *outrage* and - apparently - a threat to the very existence of our great nation.

Note the inherent condescension in McQuaig's assertion that Canadians are a bunch of rubes whose worldviews can be changed by *sound bites*....

*cough cough*

More please, Ms. McQuaig.

Obama's speech was pure Obama, when he is not in campaign mode.

In campaign mode, which is what he likes, Obama is performing a fictional role as The Messiah. He loves that, the adulation, the adoration and he can make all the abstract promises he wants. His agenda is the adulation.

In presidential role, which Obama dislikes because it does not involve invoking adulation and requires involvement on his part with facts rather than fiction - Obama is indifferent, bored and disparaging of others.

His comments on Bush were insulting. He essentially said that the Iraq War was wrong, but that Bush, the simplistic idiot who wanted it, was still someone who loved the troops and his country. (sigh of pity and despair).

Then he went on to say that the waste of money on the Iraq War was DIRECTLY responsible for the lack of attention to the economy...and thus, the current economic recession. Obama neglected to say that the Democrats were in charge of the money since 2006 and had set up the housing fiasco. Oh, and Obama also neglected to say that his spending had cost the taxpayers MORE than the cost of the Iraq War - and with the result only in a massive deficit.

Obama went on to say that now, that money wasted on Bush's War, could now be used for the economy. Hmm. I thought the stimulus was supposed to do that - and yet - all it did was prop up the public service; it provided no new infrastructure for private sector jobs - which was what it was supposed to do.

Obama was insulting to Bush, and talked down to the American people. Obama has no respect for other people, does not wish to engage in any discussion with others (remember his refusal to debate with the Republicans over health care and his current refusal to hold press conference questions).

I think the magic is over. I doubt very much that Obama could attract the numbers to a rally now, that Glenn Beck did on the weekend. And Obama's official speeches (including in that newly hideously decorate Oval Office) are indifferent, and irrelevant.

I suspect Obama will be playing a lot more golf as he disappears from the front line and as criticism of him increases. He's going to say, more often now, that the American people are ignorant, excitable (this was the reason he gave for their attendance at Beck's rally) - and that he, the Wise Man, must do things 'for their own good' even though they are too ignorant to accept or understand.

Sgt Lejaune @11:13 - It's funny, I saw EBD's post last night and thought "I wonder how long until..."

I never got this thing about Ukraine/the Ukraine. I mean, there are no articles in Slavic languages, am I right? So it can't be about the translation of some arrogant Russian locution; I could understand the offense in that. The Yemen and The Sudan are countries (of a sort).
