Paging Mr. Prentice

... you've got a spill in aisle five.

From the “we told you so time and again department”, Canadian weather data is a mess. It took an FOIA to get the “fess up” out in the open. Anybody got a copy of the EC report? So far all we have is press reports

"• Climate data, which could be gathered at minimal additional cost, is not being gathered due to lack of funds;"

Ah poor babies, this is so unfortunate.

If only someone could devise a scam that would ensure lots and lots of funding.

Go to the original Financial Post article and read the comments. A reader got the budget numbers and, if correct, their funding increased by 48% since 2005 with a drop only in the last year reported. The "consensus" seems to be that the organization is top heavy - too many HQ staff and not enough field staff or properly functioning equipment. It doesn't sound like an income problem, just the usual mis-allocations of funds by a government department followed by whining and crying for more tax money by activists.

If we are the same as world class East Anglia and NOAA then how much should we worry? They were good enough to almost change the world. Give everyone a thermometer and close it. We know which way the wind blows and anyone that is temperature dependant ie concrete mixers, already pay for private forecasting.

The coin they dump on grants is obscene. http://www.ec.gc.ca/gc-sc/Index.cfm?lang=en&state=reports

Another example of government incompetence. And Canadians still think the government is the solution to many problems? The only thing the government is good at is wasting tax payers money. How many bureaucrats does it take to read a thermometer? Maybe they are too busy taking French or cultural sensitivity lessons? Maybe there is not enough quality union types? Perhaps we should organize a commission to study the problem?

Ya get a bit suspicious when Government Ministries constantly support the policies of the former regime.

Environment Canada >>>>Co2 AGW
Justice Canada >>>>>gun control
Ag-Canada >>>wheat board
Citizenship-Immigration >>>>eastern european strippers and Tamil Tigers...

It used to be(pre-PET) a change of government meant a mass change of personel from one flavour of party faithful for another flavour.

Then this ended and snivel servants had to be a-polical....in theory.

Sasquatch. They are not apolitical. They are Liberal or NDP mostly. When I was at work one day the conversation turned to PM Harper's religion. I asked why they were not equally concerned the majority of PM's had been Catholic? Why darn..they were, how did that happen?

Posted by: Speedy at August 23, 2010 7:38 PM

I am not sure who it was, but I caught the tail end of an interview on Saskatoon News Talk 650 radio with a person who said the temperature data collecting of Environment Canada was an inaccurate mess.

I suspect that Prentice has and is listening too much to the Liberal and NDP sleepers in the various ministries.

From an email sent to me from (one of?)the Deputy Minister (PhD.) Science and Technology, in reply to one I sent to my MP and Mr Prentice:

"....The Intergovermental Panel on Climate Change's Fourth Assessment Report, published in 2007, concluded that the climate system is clearly warming, as shown by increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global average sea level. The Report also concluded that it is very likely that emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities are responsible for most of the observed warming since the mid-twentieth century, and that a human influence is now evident in many other aspects of the Earth's climate. The Government of Canada has accepted these findings......"

Form your own conclusions. If funding was cut, this Ministry, like health care is only there to fund paychecks and pensions, not do any meaningfull work replicating Briffa, Jones or Mann et al.

Why is even Mr. Prentice, a lawyer and no scientist even getting paid for his bench-warming skills here?

When I want a weather check, I stick my head outside. Works every time. Fire. Them. All.

The head of Environment Canada should resign in protest. There must be another University with an ex-Liberal chancellor which would hire him - like Ottawa U or Queens.

Since 1994, weather forecasts where I live (here in Southern Ontario) have gotten more and more unreliable. I now use the US weather maps for Michigan and NY to determine whether or not I should cut hay, as I need 4-5 days of clear weather. The Canadian forecasts are no longer to be trusted.

Prentice is a joke! A closet liberal. The truth isn't going to stand in the way of his idiotic march to the IPCC drum. I'm disappointed Harper doesn't dump this fool.

Posted by: altaguy at August 23, 2010 9:06 PM

Me too altaguy .... in spades............
I've sent numerous letters to the PMO ... the party ... my MP (Bruinooge) and to Prentice.

IMO ... Prentice is either an ass of epic proportions ...OR ... it's a set up on the part of Harper.

Ponder the implications of both scenarios.

Posted by: OMMAG at August 23, 2010 10:22 PM

I agree let's send the bureaucrats thermometers; and show where to shove them.....

Posted by: eastern paul at August 24, 2010 7:50 AM

Here is the temp report for that part of Canada. A long hard winter followed by a short crappy summer. There that was easy.

Harper should have stuck to his original premise that Mann made warming was a Neo Commie plot.
