Some of life's mysteries are indeed difficult to comprehend ... the more so if they are concepts that require exceptional scientific expertise. It is oft better for us to simply avoid matters of great complexity, leaving such to those more gifted with great quantities of frontal lobe neurons, those such as the brilliant Andrew C. Revkin of the NYT, or that world famous geneticist from Canada (his name just slipped my neurons). Having said that, there are on occasion exceptions, when even the duller knives in the drawer get to carve the steak. One such moment recently came to me as I was struggling with one of humankind’s most perplexing peculiarities, none other than the baffling climate/weather conundrum ... the very same riddle that has vexed great thinkers since the time of King Sesotris of Egypt. To make a long story short, let me declare that I have now solved the age old puzzle:
- July drought in Moscow... climate.
- January thaw in Moscow ... climate.
- Early August frost in Moscow ... weather.
- Massive animal deaths from cold in South America ... weather.
... more details.

The government should sponsor night school classes for all us peasants, so we can learn to tell weather from climate.
How can we uneducated masses get behind something if we can't even recognize it?
If they were to supply free food and beer at the classes,I can guarantee good attendance.
Posted by: dmorris at August 19, 2010 12:38 PMIt's almost as if there is a subtle pattern in there somewhere but I can't quite grasp it. Quick, find a climate change expert to explain it to me.
Posted by: LC Bennett at August 19, 2010 12:56 PM@LC - The pattern I'm seeing is "hot=climate, cold=weather" but that seems too simple to be the case. Hand over that expert when you're done with him.
Posted by: Kathryn at August 19, 2010 1:04 PMI call it Weather Porn, Weather news all the time, it's as if the world never had any severe weather before.
I still remember hot and cold summers , cold and mild winters and lots of huricanes all forest fires all over the world.
Weather Porn!
Posted by: Steve at August 19, 2010 1:24 PMActually the rule is:
Toronto - climate
the rest of Canada - weather

Posted by: Steve at August 19, 2010 1:24 PMSure, Kathryn but be careful because the definition climate expert is also difficult for laymen to understand.
Pro-AGW= expert
AGW skeptic= quack
Luckily, the MSM has been able to do all this tricky sorting of climate/weather, expert/denier for us. Like Cjunk, I am thankful that our intellectual superiors in the media have attempted to prevented us from becoming needlessly confused by hearing both sides of the issue. A thousand Thank-yous!!
Posted by: LC Bennett at August 19, 2010 1:27 PM30 consecutive days (and counting) of below average temperature in San Jose, CA? Weather.
Coldest July in recorded history in San Jose? Weather.
Nine record low maximum temperatures for Oceanside Harbor in the month of August? Weather.
Posted by: Mike at August 19, 2010 3:29 PMWeather persists for days and weeks.
Climate persists for months and years.
It's not about warmer or cooler.
"Weather persists for days and weeks.
Climate persists for months and years."
But the climate change BS goes on forever.

I think you must be mistaken. According to Jim Hansen July and August were "THE WARMEST MONTHS EVER!".
In Saskatchewan I don't think we've actually had more than 2 days over +30C [86F] this year. And yet miraculously GISS claims We've had a warmer than normal summer.
Go figure.
IMO, General MSM output are so dumb down and based on popular perceptions that this could be a valid explanation to why Hot is "climate" and Cold is "weather":
AGW/Climate Change being considered by skeptics to be a form of religion, the perception of "hot" can be linked to fire which is the constant in hell.
Cold, especially in the Northern parts of north America reminds of pristine white snow covered landscapes, fresh cool air, sleighrides and grandma's hot apple pies at Christmas.
Never mind that cold "weather" kills lots more than hotter "climate". Winters with little snow replaced by rain is not as pretty and is more "depressive" looking overall...Such winters have occured thousands of times in the past. The 1930's were just like that for example. The difference is that back then it was considered a blessing. Today's city sheeple, spoiled and totally disconnected with nature, rich and with cheap energy does not suffer from harsh winters...Perception.
My theory is comparable to the "cute" polar bears vs the "ugly" bald headed vulture:
One has currently a very large population. It will not hesitate to catch you and he might eat you when you are still alive but it's cubs are sooooo cute.
The other will never attack you and might eat you only after you're dead from some other reason. It's on an endangered species list but its ugly as sin so, whooooo cares.
PROPAGANDA + PERCEPTION = IGNORANCE.
